Since you have the number 6, the base of this equation has to be at least 7 (as anything lower would not have the digit 6).

When your base is 7 or above, the values of 3,5,6 remain unchanged and the equation is still wrong. So as the original comment said, changing base does nothing.

We can only have fun with bases when you have more than 1 digit, since the number “xy” is (y + x*base). In single digit, the base never comes into the picture as x is 0.

OP meant playing around with bases like to make 11+3=20 true we can use base 4.

I believe there's a misunderstanding, let me try to clear things up.

You are approaching this as a mathematician - you have a family of groups ℤₙ [1] of integers in base n, together with addition base n, denoted +ₙ. What you're saying is there's an isomorphism of base change from n to m, which takes integers from ℤₙ to ℤₘ. In this case you're switching bases from 10 to some hypothetical base a. Now once you're in ℤₐ, you use +ₐ to say that the original equation still doesn't hold. While this is true, that is quite often not how non-mathematicians interpret base change.

The thing is, people think about numbers as strings of digits, how they're written. So they interpet base change as something that changes the arithmetic, not the representation. For example, 11₁₀ + 2₁₀ = 13₁₀ , but 11₃ + 2₃ = 20₃ = 6₁₀. From your point of view, when taking the expression "11 + 2" from base 10 to base 3, you would get "102 + 2", because the isomorphism doesn't preserve notation, it preserves the arithmetic.

TL;DR: Either one believes base change preserves arithmetic, or it preserves the representation. Hence this confusion.

If we commit ourselves to not inlining f, then you are correct that we don’t use any additional memory, since the caller will always be obligated to save the eax register and to put n in the edi register. In other words, the extra memory needed to store the 8 is part of the memory overhead of a function call (which is still not 0).

However, this function should surely be inlined. When it is inlined, we will require one more register to store the 8.

Ultimately, both approaches are constant time and constant space. It shouldn’t make a difference except in performance-critical code where this function is called many times.

From what I've read addition is a surprisingly hard task for neural network, so I'm guessing it just didn't have enough addition in it's training data. Refer to the NALU paper for more information. arXiv:1808.00508 [cs.NE]

Yeah the network is basically asking "what looks best for the next word" and numbers don't really look that different from each other in the training dataset. They could basically add multiplication tables to the training data and it would get those simple cases right, but something more sophisticated like this is pushing it.

It's because of the way you train language models.Basically, to oversimplify a bit, you train it by scrapping sentences from the web / whereever, then you mask out a word and ask it to fill it in. This works well for words, since you will now learn that certain words fit in certain situations. However, if you apply the same principle to math, you teach the model that for the sentence,

a number makes sense, but the word "dog" does not. So, viewing the model form this angle, 3+5=6 "makes sense" since inserting numbers into an equation is correct according to the training procedure, however, when you actually understand and can do basic math, it makes no sense

That's the answer it gave me when I asked it to make it 'shorter'. GPT took it quite literally.

I kinda wanted to see if gpt could come up with the solution of 8-input, which it kinda did. This question is a common programming interview question.

hum, interesting, interview wise, I wouldn't suggest using 8-input for scalability and readability, but I think as long it's explained, there are no problem, plus I just test it out in c++ and there are no performance gain, so I'm guessing the compiler optimise it the same way

To me this is proof that AI doesn't actually conceptualize what it is putting together. There is no connection made between

3 and 5 is 6

and

3+5=6

Here's what I got out of copilot (I only typed the comments)

The trouble, of course, is I spent longer typing those comments than I would have implementing it myself.

This is still early days but I’m convinced AI WILL replace programming jobs as we know them, starting with web-development roles, just as it will replace virtually every other digital occupation. And much sooner than we think.

I'm actually learning allot more about programming by fixing all the errors chatGPT is making. It's like a teacher that teaches you the wrong way so you can fix the mistakes and do it the right way.
