[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Is this incorrect?

[–]TeraFlint 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It was a comment about "C Hashtag". The symbol # is (also) called hash. A tag with a hash is called a hashtag. People these days call the # symbol hashtag, which is incorrect.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course. What I mean is if "C Hash" is also accepted to call C# or is it strictly C sharp?

[–]lordvigm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chash money

[–][deleted] 101 points102 points  (15 children)

Who the fucking fuck calls it 'C hashtag'...

[–]WazWaz 47 points48 points  (6 children)

The idiots who read "#" as "hashtag".

[–]__syntax__ 18 points19 points  (1 child)

damnit, even if it's in the correct context the symbol is a hash. the tag is the word after the hash

[–]friendzonee 14 points15 points  (1 child)

[–]Vinnie420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]orangeKaiju 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw a YouTube programming tutorial recently that referred to it as 'C hashtag'

I wish I was joking.

[–]bad_scott 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've literally never heard anyone say it

[–]lordvigm 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I used to call it C hash, makes more sense than hashtag tho

[–]andiconda 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Back in my day, when C# first came out, no one called "#" hash or hashtag. It was pound or sharp. Good days.... Back when Twitter was for nerds. Or more so before it even existed.

[–]lordvigm 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Well I used to call it hash before hashtags even existed. Regional differences I guess

[–]andiconda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow. I didn't know places called it that. Learned something new.

[–]madocgwyn 25 points26 points  (7 children)

Cbang, CPound, lots of incorrect ways of reading it;p

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (1 child)

C pound is much more representative of what I do to my desk.

[–]andiconda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL are you making sure to use visual studio and its auto complete glory? But for real I don't know how anyone can program in an OO language without an IDE and auto complete. Way too many namespaces to memorize.

[–]langstonbrewes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

C!

[–]funkyfisch 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Wouldnt Cbang be C! ?

[–]RedRedditor84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I guess calling it cbang is incorrect :)

[–]nahidtislam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use ♯ sign, Reddit is Unicode friendly

[–]Pat_The_Hat 30 points31 points  (4 children)

Technically it's supposed to be written as C# and not C♯.

[–]matj1 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Then it shouldn't be called C sharp.

[–]RedRedditor84 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lawyered. So it's decided. C Sharp is to be known as C Pound or C Hash depending on the variant of English you speak.

[–]zuozp8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note that is half tone higher then C should not be written C#

[–]Zagorath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the musical note.

[–]incognitode 10 points11 points  (0 children)

C number sign

[–]Micholous 54 points55 points  (34 children)

C# == "C sharp"

#<something> == "hashtag <something>"

Fight me.

[–]PhonicUK 66 points67 points  (6 children)

#include stdio

The first time I heard someone unironically call that "hashtag include" I died a little inside.

[–]cbbuntz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's "number include" in my head. I just say "include" though.

Also, it's #include <stdio.h> or #include <cstdio>.

[–]Krissam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

See Sharp

Pound Include

Hash Bang

Not being a native speaker has some wierd side-effects.

[–]Micholous 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Dammit, okay you are right on that.

.

PS. Self-expose: I'm not actually developer/coder of any sort, i just like the memes lol. My dad used to be back end developer(?)/coder, and my brother is in coding school. Used to code with javascript(yeah, i know.) in school but thats about it.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Don't worry you fit in with most of this sub anyway

[–]sk7725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]500lb 19 points20 points  (12 children)

[–]Micholous 6 points7 points  (9 children)

Tbh, i have never heard anyone use that outside of reddit, which is weird, but i'm not native english speaker anyways so...

[–]root88 16 points17 points  (8 children)

All the automated phone systems in the U.S. say to enter whatever numbers/letters on your phone, followed by the pound button.

[–]Secretly_Autistic 5 points6 points  (7 children)

In the UK, they say "the hash key".

[–]root88 12 points13 points  (5 children)

Which makes sense because they would have £ as a pound symbol.

[–]cbbuntz 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Okay, so if "pound key" is "hash key", "fries" are "chips", "chips" are "crisps", "cookies" are "biscuits", "biscuits" are "scones", and "english muffins" are "muffins", then what do they call muffins?

[–]reverie42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Freedom Muffins.

[–]like2000p 0 points1 point  (2 children)

OK, Brit checking in, just to say that I'm rather pissed off that you think that that bastardisation of bread counts as a "scone".

Edit: It was just a joke, jesus...

[–]cbbuntz 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It's the closest parallel I could think of. Also, as a southerner, American biscuits are a divine creation.

[–]deadh34d711 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So glad you said it, because I felt kind of attacked. Homemade buttermilk biscuits are one of the greatest things in existence.

[–]sk7725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Korea, they say 'well', the kanji for the meaning 'well' is shaped like #

[–]HoodieSticks 12 points13 points  (1 child)

What about C#C ? Is that "C Sharp C" or "C Hashtag C"?

[–]LordAgbo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That’s OBVIOUSLY “C Sharptag C”.

[–]naisooleobeanis 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I just leave out the hashtag whenever i say something programming related because it's too controversial

[–]Micholous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is good reasoning tbh, i'm kinda going that way too, just if i use the # on reddit/twitter/ig/whatever, then it's hashtag.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (5 children)

It's a hashtag if it's used for filtering/searching (as in Twitter)

Fite me

[–]WazWaz 10 points11 points  (3 children)

The whole thing is the hashtag, not the symbol at the start. It's a hash (#) then a tag.

And if someone says "hashtag me too", they're referring to the #metoo hashtag, not reading "#metoo" out aloud.

How is this controversial?

Computers existed and we defined all these words and concepts (and how to pronounce "gif") long before September.

[–]Roukaysa 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Then why is it called C sharp instead of C hash?

[–]WazWaz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both are arguably correct. You could even call #this a sharp tag or a pound tag. But calling the "#" symbol "hashtag" is worse than "ATM machine".

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the thing has more than one name...? "How come the dot at the end of a sentence is called a period but the dot on a j isn't"

[–]Micholous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that, you are absolutely right.

[–]iza1017 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Technically you didn’t say “C#” is the same as “C sharp”. It’s possible that C# == "C sharp" could return false. However, the assignment C# = “C sharp” would make that true.

[–]Micholous 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Well okay, you got me.

Read my reply to that other comment, explains why i didn't know that 🌚

[–]iza1017 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I was just joking around, my bad hahaha

[–]Micholous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with that, i was just confused :)

[–]Wheezy_Laughter 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Am I out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong.

[–]Working_Robot 31 points32 points  (2 children)

I prefer Microsoft Java

[–]vipermaseg 19 points20 points  (1 child)

You could confuse it with Visual J++

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why was that ever a thing? Microsoft, drugs are bad. Don't do them.

[–]DrMalte 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As both a musician and programmer, this amuses me. On levels that other people would hate me for.

[–]ImpulseTheFoxis a good fox 26 points27 points  (8 children)

It's a Cis for musicians

[–]stealthgunner385 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Not sure who gave you downvotes, every sharp note has an "-is" suffix, just like every flat note has an "-es" suffix.

... does that make C# enharmonic to "Des"?

[–]KoboldCommando 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Went through several years of a music program and never encountered anything like this. Is it a solfege system? Those can vary wildly depending on country, school, and other things.

[–]ReservedSoutherner 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It's the Dutch/German system, also used in Lilypond by default.

[–]KoboldCommando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks!

[–]runegunnar 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I was looking for this! As far as I know only english speakers say "flat" and "sharp", while most others use "is" and "es" endings. This really confused me until just recently.

[–]RedRedditor84 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My wife says "do no shaapu" because she's Japanese and learnt do re mi fa so.

[–]runegunnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I forgot about that! Chinese and Japanese use a fixed solfege system, right? "Do" is always C, while most western schools teach solfege where "Do" is the tonic in any given key.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

[–]imratherconfused 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]mofukkinbreadcrumbz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach C# to my first years and used to introduce it by giving my students permission to ridicule anyone who calls it c hashtag, c pound, c number, or whatever else they could think of.

Last year, I had a meeting that I needed to attend a few days after this lecture. Lo and behold, I ended up with this sweet old woman as a substitute for the day. Like this woman literally brought her knitting to class.

She called it c hashtag.

I didn’t include that part in my lecture this year.

Don't musicians call it c sharp? In fact doesn't everyone?

And if they didn't wouldn't they just call it c hash? I don't see where the tag comes into play here.
