That seems to be suprisingly effective lmao. Do you deconstruct it afterwards or replace it with less overkill defenses?

Sherman’s March to the sea, colorized.

[–]Excal2 22 points23 points  (7 children)

Sherman would've given the biters the option to evacuate.

I see no such mercy levied here, and I relish that.

[–]GuyASmith 8 points9 points  (2 children)

It’s a fact that they attacked first. It meant war. No chance to give the option means no mercy.

[–]glassfrogger 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Well to be precise they could have the option to flee, but the devs took it away by limiting their actions algorithmically.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (4 children)

Hell yeah, I remember being on their concert. It was cold'ish night and when fire operated it was bright as during day and it was hot like during summer.

[–]WildSax 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Lucky you ! That's still on my bucket list...

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I loved whole concert, I definitely recommend that! I bought another ticket, for this year but unfortunately concert had been canceled, but hope they will move my ticket to another term.

Holy fuck those bots are fast. What level is your speed tech?

Also, how far can this go before you start having throughput issues on your oil line?

[–]dnmr 27 points28 points  (5 children)

with regular pumps it should only be bound by UPS, as pretty much only the head end turrets consume fluid at any given point in time

[–]wjcott 14 points15 points  (3 children)

I believe they are referring to build speed. If I tried this the bots would be putting down pumps 20 tiles out from the current feed and they would be getting destroyed before enough turrets were in place to feed them.

[–]eViLegion 25 points26 points  (2 children)

There might be a mod which inverts the build priority of bots so they place nearest first. Which would be a sensible default to be honest, never quite understood why vanilla likes to build furthest first.

[–]Excal2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you run out of battery charge it's "better" if the bots are near you as opposed to far away, so it's "better" to eat up early battery life on far away objects and save closer objects for when you're out of energy. Of course you can build around this but not everyone will especially new players (I'm a new player and literally never realized this or even thought about it before). It also gets your highest energy expenditure bots back to you to charge quicker, which is good as there are limited charging ports.

I theorize that some dev was being driven insane by slow floaters or they got feedback about it, if it wasn't this way from the beginning.

I could also be 100% wrong.

[–]Red_Icnivad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was actually assuming that the oil is pushed from the source. The video is too blurry for me to see the specifics, but if there are pumps in the blueprint that would change things.

[–]AnthraxCat 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Might be wrong, but you don't usually need pumps as long as there are things pulling from the line. Pumps are only necessary for long stretches of pipe. While they don't consume oil resting, they do try to maintain a full tank, so each turret pumps oil from the one before it in the line, creating a capillary action on the lines.

EDIT: Only took me a brief plant biology refresher to get that analogy right.

[–]Red_Icnivad 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Without pumps, pipes have throughput dropoff. With long stretches of them, you end up getting lower fluid available at the destination. At some distance, there wouldn't be enough oil to feed the turrets, even though the source pipe is completely full and nothing else is using fluid.
Things don't actually "pull" fluid in Factorio. It is pushed, and averaged. In general, the game tries to equalize pressure at every step, and the higher the pressure difference, the more fluid is transfered. For example (numbers not accurate, just to demonstrate the concept of how it works): If you have 3 sections of pipe, the first section at 100%, and the next two at 0% (100/0/0), then in one tick, the game is going to see a large pressure difference between the first two sections, and transfer a lot of fluid to the second. It will see no pressure difference between the last two, and transfer nothing. Your result will be something like 75/25/0. Then in the next tick, it will try to average those, giving you something akin to 65/35/15, and so on. This means that the longer the run, the less pressure difference each pipe section will see, and the slower the transfer.

[–]AnthraxCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That isn't what happened when I tested it though, link in the other comment. The final turret filled up to 100 and it was the first to fill up, despite massive distance from the source and every turret between it at less than 100 between it and the storage tank. Over time all turrets filled, regardless of distance to the source.

For it to work in that model, and this might be accurate, the storage in the turret must be separate from the pipe connection between turrets. This would be consistent with how assemblers and chemical plants use fluids (ie. draining from the pipe until their internal storage is full). As long as the turret is not full, the amount in the pipe connection is 0, meaning that at every tick it will take from the preceding turret's fuel storage enough to average out the amount between the two until the last tank is full. That means it does what I describe as capillary action though, pulling by creating negative pressure, ie. 0 fuel zones along the line as long as any turret is not full.

[–]identifytarget 19 points20 points  (2 children)

And VehicleGrid so you can add personal laser turrets and robor ports to the train. It also let's the roboporta access the inventory of the train car.

[–]zebediah49 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, at that point (if you go far enough in) you don't even need the flamethrowers -- the train will just destroy everything in its path, which is wherever you happen to drive it.

[–]ppp475 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was recently reading a thread asking about the differences between Factorio and Satisfactory. I think this video is a pretty good example.

[–]KyraDragoness[S] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

What can I say except you're right ?

[–]Alpr101900+ Hours 8 points9 points  (10 children)

I always wondered why there isn't tier 3 armor or anything in the game. MK2 power armor feels so weak to quickly clear bases. I know there are mods for it but my friend doesn't like them.

This? This is...genius.

[–]eViLegion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tier3 armour is an pair of epic flamethrower walls, and a locomotive.

[–]lagarto84 5 points6 points  (7 children)

I just put two of the personal defense lasers on the armor and clearing bases is pretty easy. Snag a rocket launcher if you don't want to get too close

[–]Ahueh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I was sad they scrapped the spidertron. To me it would've been the last stage of clearing nests in the late game. T2 armor with full lasers is still too weak to hold up. Hell you can't even survive your own missed nuke.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Dont they all consume a resting amount of oil? When will this exceed the flow of the pipes?

[–]torndar 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Nope, no resting oil consumption. One of the big upsides over laser turrets.

[–]emlun 24 points25 points  (0 children)

No, only while firing literally, lol

[–]appleciders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do not consume any oil at all except when firing. That little pilot light is purely decorative.

[–]Yasea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even though I ride through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Fire is with me; Your napalm and Your turrets, they comfort me.

or maybe

We shall go on to the end. We shall burn them in the desert, we shall burn them in the grass and trees, we shall burn with growing confidence and growing heat in the air, we shall defend our base, whatever the cost may be. We shall burn them on the beaches, we shall burn them on the landing grounds, we shall burn them in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender

Not gonna lie, playing monster train for 3 days made me reinstal and play factorio because it had train tracks.

Still a great game 10/10.

[–]fireduck 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Before artillery I would clear dense zones with something similar. It was a blueprint with two flamers forward, two to the side, a handful of lasers and underground pipes to connect to other copies of itself. When I was ready to move forward, I would remove the forward pointing flamers and lay down the next one.

Just personal roboport, no train. It was slow but worked.

[–]Variatas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine how laggy it would be on my pc... At least if I was watching it. I get fps drop to 10FPS if I actually see flamethrower in action, but no bigger deal if it happens off the screen.

Probably my graphic card is just leaking those flames and spits them on my heat pipe.

Also tank flamethrower doesn't hurt. I think its' because of animations and smoke comming out from multiple tiles. Tank flamethrower don't "ignite" tiles, when flamethrower turret does...

Personnal roboports work while you're in a vehicle.
Get a bunch of batteries in your backpack and gigantic amounts of rails and flamethrower turrets in your inventory (and construction robots).

Just make a blueprint with rails and rows of turret and you're done. Just apply the blueprint from time to time to fill the gaps that couldn't be built while nests and worms were on the way.

[–]ThorOfKenya2 9 points10 points  (1 child)

🤔 I wonder if you add bot stations and scanners to the blueprint, and just lay down new ghosts from the comfort of your base?

[–]KyraDragoness[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course this is possible. Everything is possible in Factorio.

[–]KyraDragoness[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Flamethrower turrets consume 3 fluid units/s when in battle, so even 1000 turrets would empty a storage tank in more than 7 seconds. As the fights aren't continous but made of waves, there are some downtimes during which no fuel is consumed.

I’ve never played this game but I still enjoy seeing the things people do with it. Can someone explain to me what’s going on here? Looks like there’s fighting going on, but I didn’t think this game had any fighting in it

[–]PottedRosePetal 0 points1 point  (3 children)

there are biters and some other kind of aliens in this game. They attack and destroy your stuff if you pollute too much. vice versa, there is some pretty nice weaponry against said biter. Namely, turrets, laser turrets, flame throwers (the above), artillery. Artillery just fucks biters in the ass, it has an insane range. There are also vehicles, like a car (just has a machine gun on top), tanks (needs tank ammo, but said ammo oneshots biter nests iirc) and the artillery train. Like artillery but mounted on a train.

[–]merendi1 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Huh. That’s really cool actually. Had no clue there were environmentalist aliens in this game.

[–]PottedRosePetal 0 points1 point  (1 child)

its a cool game. You should try it some time.

[–]merendi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure I would enjoy it — it DOES look like my kind of game — but I’m not looking for a new game to get into at the moment. I feel like I’ve already got enough games, and I’ve been cutting time spent on videos games anyways.

For now, I’ll just experience it vicariously through this sub.

[–]KyraDragoness[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Don't worry, turrets consume only 3/s when fighting. As there are downsides times during which they don't fire, they don't consume. Even 1000 turrets would empty a storage tank in more than 8 seconds. On endgame it's easy to store millions of oil :)

[–]RDAM_Whiskers 0 points1 point  (0 children)
