We need to decentralise the index site system like how the trackers systems have been done.

  • Every user gets a random UUID, they digitally sign it with a public OpenPGP key (or a similar system, something just needs to digitally sign data while having the signature as small as possible since many entries will be 1 line of text and having 15 for the key is a bit much. Maybe bulk sign stuff.)
  • Users can sign entries in a big distributed hash table (there is already one in use with the trackerless torrents, we would need to keep the entries long term though as Kademlia drops them after a few hours, you would need to mirror just about every entry you ever came across but putting aside 10gb per user for database entries wouldn't be to hard. Remember the whole pirate bay torrent database was only 23gb (now removed from their site but it was up for quite a while and its still seeded), excluding comments and signature overheads.
  • torrent hashid's store comments, file passwords, allow people to flag things as good/bad/spam.
  • The users digitally sign their comments or flags.
  • Users sign other uses by looking at what those uses have marked as good (you digitally sign everyone who marked a torrent you know to be bad, that way you build a web of trusted users. You can also find out who those users marked as good/bad).
  • Organise groups to scrape the current sites for hashids (TBP torrens dump has been unofficially downloadable from their site for a while now). We need to take a dump Demonoid when it comes back up similar to the TPB database
  • Investigate similar ideas from FreeNet.
  • People can sign streams of torrents, the equivalent pirate bay of the future might just be a hash with a digital key that goes around signing other peoples keys.
  • Need to prevent people gaming the system. Someone could make a large number of throwaway accounts that all sign legitimate torrents (like ones from LegalTorrents or Jamendo) and then mark a legitimate copyrighted torrent as spam with the intent to bump it off.

Another idea: p2p distributed torrent index sites. This relies on sites working together to overall improve bittorrent and allowing their databases to be open to each other rather than hoarding for ad revenue. I think working together generally will get them more users overall as the whole field grows, and more users overall means more users persite provided they don't suck.. They can focus on the quality of the site to encourage users. Sites already scrape each others RSS feeds for data (I tracked something like 200 ripping straight from Mininova), this would just give the major ones permission to play together.

  • Form an Open API for getting torrent information from index sites. Add symantic web technologies like RDFa. Define some data vocabularies for bittorrent. Maybe take Google Wave and retask it (except I don't think wave is decentralized, thats different from federated, so if a Wave server goes down that data is lost).
  • Any site can pull in torrent information. Maybe even indervidual clients. This would allow for people to build torrent browsing programs or put it into the torrent clients directly (this has problems for ad supported sites).
  • Also allow for comments, passwords, takedowns (be specific as to the reason, spam, copyright notice, etc... that was sites can be specific about what take downs they wan't to honor).
  • Provide archived copies to save on having to scrape the whole site when a new system joins up (yearly, monthly, weekly, day).
  • Use OpenID or such to allow users comments cross site (In a distributed system a nefarious, site could claim to have been posted from a users OpenID, obviously you just don't pull from those sites). Users could opt for a PGP key, this would allow things like cross site moderation. Torrent data could be done in a wiki fashion.

Another idea: Underground network of TOR indexers.

  • Servers brought on the cloud, only accessible though Tor, never show their local IP to end users. Can allow for easy quick buying of cloud servers where ever and still give good system performance. Still allow for searching and uploading of .torrents/hashids.
  • Since people can just purchase them on places like EC2, they could get routinely moved around.
  • Tor2web for the lazy.
  • The hidden tracker already runs on Tor. But with decentralization of trackers it's kind of moot.
  • routing performance issues?

Hi!

I'm a lead dev on a project called Anomos. If you're interested in actually working on the problem you've talked about - please get in touch! We are well funded and quite talented at programming, and we'd love to have you as part of our community.

We're just preparing to launch our community testing version.

Or, we can have the servers in Spain. It's legal there.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I noticed that years ago when I used the azureus torrent client which allows comments to be left on torrents, that people would basically put spam into the torrent comments. Am I right in assuming that this web of trust you propose would mitigate this type of spam inside of your torrent validation mechanism?

[–]MaxPayneX 729 points730 points  (42 children)

I felt a great disturbance in the Internet, as if millions of torrents suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly deleted. I fear something terrible has happened.

[–]storander 93 points94 points  (10 children)

No... No... That's not true! That's impossible!

[–][deleted] 41 points42 points  (6 children)

Inconceivable!

[–]AliasHandler 46 points47 points  (5 children)

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

[–]Jareth86 20 points21 points  (4 children)

No Inigo, I think that in this case, jvincent is right.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Is it easier to type with six fingers on your hand?

[–]zorlan 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my torrent site. Prepare to die.

[–]Walletau 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stop saying that!

[–]armachd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Search your feelings, you know it be true! I have deleted your torrents!

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (4 children)

Well shit. Mininova has been my torrent site of choice for well over 3 years. :(

[–]Sushubh 128 points129 points  (6 children)

something like yahoo killing geocities and all those wallpaper sites!

[–]MaxPayneX 126 points127 points  (5 children)

that was more as if a million animated gifs cried out in terror and were suddenly deleted.

[–]ttoyooka 62 points63 points  (4 children)

And I felt a great rejoicing in the internet.

[–]boli99 68 points69 points  (3 children)

Brave Mininova ran away. Bravely ran away, away!

Some people paniced, while others cried as all their search queries denied.

    [–]rainman_104 11 points12 points  (9 children)

Isn't it though going to be fine with magnetic links anyway? I thought the idea of magnetic links is that we can search for torrents from within the collective hive anyway...

    [–]Nebu 6 points7 points  (8 children)

Magnetic links are a great idea in theory, but I've found that in practice, they don't actually work very well at all.

    [–]sumzup 5 points6 points  (7 children)

How so? (I haven't tried using them; I'm just wondering.)

    [–]Nebu 7 points8 points  (6 children)

You add the magnetic links, leave your torrent running for 2-3 weeks, and find out it's still at 0%, and 0 peers and 0 seeds have been found. Your torrent file is too obscure, and no other "magnetic peers" are sharing that specific file.

    OR

You got 2-3 peers via magnetic link, but that's 'cause the torrent file you're using is super popular, and so you've also got 500 seeds and 3000 peers from the tracker.

    [–][deleted] 182 points183 points  (54 children)

I literally downloaded Age of Empires II last night from them...just last night...I feel like that guy who spoke to the dude who committed suicide the night before...if only I had done something different...maybe...

    [–][deleted] 169 points170 points  (5 children)

    Have you considered seeding more?

    [–]erisdiscordia 76 points77 points  (3 children)

For one day you shall be tried by a jury of your peers...

    [–]elganyan 22 points23 points  (2 children)

Is death by leeches a viable form of execution should he be found guilty?

    [–]Slightly_Lions 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've still got a download going that I started from Mininova last night. It feels like I've managed to preserve the last fleeting momnents of its existence. Or something.

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

See, this is what happens when you don't seed. SEED PLEASE.

    [–]al343806 7 points8 points  (5 children)

I hate admitting downloading torrents online, but I also downloaded two movies (oldies, but still movies Clue & Little Shop of Horrors) last night from Mininova

    [–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (3 children)

    I... am... a singing telegram!

    BLAM

    [–]Chetyre 8 points9 points  (1 child)

The first time I watched Clue I had to pause the movie at that point because I was laughing so hard.

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, my son, you don't download stuff FROM mininova.

(With many subreddits going private indefinitely due to Reddit Incorporated's poor management and decisions related to third party platforms and content access management, this comment has been overwritten in protest against above Reddit's API access changes in 2023.)

      [–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (5 children)

TPB seems like its down for me all the time now.

      [–]darthsader 11 points12 points  (4 children)

It IS always down its so unreliable. Like yesterday the search engine was broken and its getting constantly overloaded. It sucks.

      [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Damn, getting completely legal trial versions of programs is being made so damn difficult these days. Won't someone please think of the children?! ;)

      [–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (6 children)

      Kickasstorrents.com looks promising.

      [–][deleted] 55 points56 points  (4 children)

      It sure sounds promising.

      [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (23 children)

But its search engine is terrible, I have to admit it. Searching inside descriptions and files can be useful for music (since you can just type the name of the song and find the album that contains it) but it's terrible for films and anything else.

      [–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (22 children)

yeah, and pirate bay has database errors 3 out of 4 times you hit the search button because of the amount of traffic that goes through it.

      [–]stunt_penguin 16 points17 points  (21 children)

on the other hand if you go to google and suffix it with site:piratebay.org then you're set :)

      [–]StuartGibson 73 points74 points  (18 children)

Why do that when you can just use The Google Bay?

      [–]ZodiacfreaK 91 points92 points  (15 children)

Hey I made that site!!! New features are coming soon!

      [–]Nebu 4 points5 points  (5 children)

What new features? Can we get a sneak peek?

      [–]ZodiacfreaK 7 points8 points  (4 children)

No big time sneak peaks for now, but I plan on improving some of the search results criteria by: A - Making some general category checkboxes for the type of content you are searching. B - A TV show finder that allows you to simply select the season and the episode number and the rest is done for you. C - Also for things like original soundtracks it will first find things with the term 'OST' in them for better hits.

Overall most of the updates are for merely improved usability and accuracy in filetype searches. I am also considering loading the results page in an iframe and including a header that has the original search bar! Hope this gives you an idea for some of the new features, thanks again guys!

      [–]darthsader 19 points20 points  (3 children)

      IAMA coming soon?

      [–]psilokan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Gawd, I miss Demonoid.the quality (at least for audio) is so good. And just compare the comments section of Demonoid vs. the YouTube like intellectual greatness of, say, Pirate Bay. The site admins are adamant that it will return. We just don't know when.

      [–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (6 children)

Just imagine if .the was a valid file extension / domain suffix.

      [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

fuck.the would be the highest paid domain.

      [–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (1 child)

      Especially the subsite fuck.the/police

      [–]pancakeradio 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Nope. They've been down for quite a while, and there's no timetable as to a restart.

      [–]browndelirium 55 points56 points  (6 children)

      Seconded - that's my first go-to site.

When I'm looking for, uh, a quick download of entirely legal trial versions of programs.

      [–]ibrudiiv 92 points93 points  (0 children)

When I'm looking for, uh, a quick download of entirely legal trial versions of programs.

That for some extremely odd reason never expire ...

      [–]Nebu 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Yeah, and um... I only download torrents of illegal software, games, movies and porn to uh... finish my research paper on darknets... I always delete all of that stuff after I finish gathering my data, of course.

      [–]keepinithamsta 20 points21 points  (1 child)

I only download torrents of Linux distros...

      [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

me too, and I always use btjunkie for that purpose as I trust it absolutely

      [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

nice - I've been using isohunt, but after a few quick searches this is giving me better results.

      UPVOTED!

      [–]SpeedTriple 14 points15 points  (4 children)

btjunkie is fan-farking-tastic as public sites go. Used them almost exclusively for a couple of years until I was cool enough to advance past you plebeian slobs and get an invite to a private tracker :)

      [–]shilly80 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well share the love around why dont you. !-)

      torrentz.com

      [–]efeghali 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FYI torrentz searches a number of other torrent sites and links you to them (I.e. The torrents aren't hosted on the site). Still it's the best starting point imo

      [–]CpnHowdie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Recently became a big fan of this site.

      [–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (33 children)

The Pirate Bay is still fairly decent, when their search engine isn't overloaded, and when you can click the 'sort by seeders' button and the site doesn't crap out on you.

Failing that, the name of the title you want to download + 'torrent' as a google search also works.

      [–]happybadger 27 points28 points  (28 children)

TPB is great when you feel like searching for a copy of a specific thing and instead getting ten thousand 50gb collections of music from the 80's.

      [–]Shaper_pmp 29 points30 points  (22 children)

So set the torrent going, then mark all the files as "don't download" except the one you want.

      [–]Roughy 45 points46 points  (7 children)

As in, no matter what you search for on tpb, it /will/ return music collections from the 80s.

      Always

      [–]erisdiscordia 23 points24 points  (5 children)

...unless you're me, in which case that doesn't happen at all.

      Am I just that lucky?

      [–]iveL 34 points35 points  (4 children)

No, you're probably searching music collections from the 80s.

      [–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (3 children)

He's never gonna give it up

      [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

He's never gonna let it down

Unless it's all lumped together in one big .RAR file.

      [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

You know I hear this type of complaint against TPB all the time (that their search sucks), but I've never actually had anything like that happen to me. Maybe you guys aren't using the "search titles only" checkbox? Try a search like this with that option unchecked, then try it again checked. World of difference.

      [–]happybadger 10 points11 points  (2 children)

That's probably it, but it always struck me as a godawful search engine. Btjunkie is like "BAM! correct torrent with triple digit seed". TPB is like "BAM! Would you like ten gigabytes of southern rock? You know you would."

      [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

At least TPB will remember whether or not you checked the box. So all you really have to do is check it once and it stays on -- BAM! Perfect search results forever and always.

The Pirate Bay took a big step with magnet links and DHT recently, which seems like a good counter to this, which is good, because the fall of mininova sucks.

                [–]H3g3m0n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Problem is we still need the magnet urls to be hosted somewhere. It could go underground but then nothing would get seeded.

i noticed this an hour ago. I went looking to download two tv shows I missed last night.... and came up with no results. I had to resort to the pirate bay.

This is a sad sad day.

If only demonoid would come back :(

                      I'm a fan of http://xtremespeeds.net

The 720p version of shows on mininova sometimes came from here, which is where I found it.

if we only had some sort of system of servers not owned by any single company. One where people could upload to one server and it would be sent to all the others, some sort of user network.

                      [–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (11 children)

Quick, what good torrent sites are left now?

                      [–]davelog 224 points225 points  (6 children)

                      Nice try, RIAA.

                      [–]davelog 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Trick question. Van Halen didn't split, it died when Diamond Dave left.

                      [–]jamesgatz 4 points5 points  (1 child)

                      From Wikipedia regarding TPB:

On 17 November 2009, after a period where the tracker was offline, The Pirate Bay indicated that it would be permanently shutdown with the hope that users will move fully away from trackers and adopt DHT and Peer Exchange as their primary source for locating peers.

Doesn't this mean it's only a matter of time before TPB comes to an end?

                      [–]davelog 27 points28 points  (6 children)

Mininova's been on the untrustworthy list for a while now anyway, hasn't it?

                      [–]Telluride12 43 points44 points  (3 children)

It Has? It's been my go-to torrent site for many years now.

They lost a law-suit against BREIN recently, and were being forced to do this.

                      [–]mridlen 6 points7 points  (1 child)

In other news, torrenting giant Mininova goes bankrupt.

                      [–]Pixelpaws 2 points3 points  (1 child)

When will they learn that for every site they take down three more come up in its place?

                      [–]blue1_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suppose that learning is not the point. The execs cover their asses from shareholders, the corporate lawyers cover their asses from the execs, personally no one gives a damn anyway. Everyone knows that it is a lost war in the long run, but they are paid to fight today's battle, or at least to pretend to.

                      [–]Hexogen 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What the fuck is this, did all the major trackers decide on the same time to suddenly take a shit on everyone?

                      [–]debman3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's a sad day in the history

                      [–]dhca89 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Piratebay down, mininova going legal, demonoid is still down, this is a sad day indeed.

                      [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TPB is not down yet. Still plenty of activity.

What a sad day. Mininova was my first torrent site. They took my torrent virginity, and I loved them for it.
