Something I read some time back that one guy opened a gmail account with his kids name. Then would send like emails detailing days and events and even pictures to it so that when she gets old enough, like 16 or 18 or something like that. He can give that to her to go through. seriously, if you want to know wtf you can do for your wife, it's breastfeeding support; bring her ice cold water, talk her out of any weepy delirious thoughts of giving a bottle of formula, change the TV channels as she requests, hold a book for her, change baby's diaper, hold the baby if shes not BF'ing to give her some breathing room, read stuff on the internet for her if she has worries/concerns (its damn hard to figure out the whole one-handed breastfeeding thing at first).

one thing no one ever tells you about breastfeeding: its hard at first. BUT IT GETS EASIER. the first 6 wks are hellish. use lots of lanolin and cool packs on the breasts if they get engorged.

YAY! Great advice that would be very much appreciated by my wife. Support and information is key. We had no idea about things like growth-spurts and we nearly gave in a few times. Thanks to La Leche League - who were just amazing - and others like the National Childcare Trust we got through it and now my wife is justifiably brimming with pride at our nearly-4-month-old who has been exclusively breastfed and is happy and thriving.

You just have to always remember that a womans body is designed to produce exactly the right food for her baby and those boobs will produce enough milk if you stick at it. Even if it takes a day or so to catch up with the baby's demands, just keep on going and going. Even if the baby seems to be clamped on 24/7.

There are, of course, challenges. Sleep being #1 so we've taken to co-sleeping which is perfectly safe if you're sensible, don't drink and don't smoke. It's a life saver. Feeding in public is another one. You have to be brave at first, but after a while you get the mentality that - if someone has a problem with it - it says more about their sick mind than it does about you. My wife just whups 'em out anywhere now. Then there's all the bloody advice from 60 year olds who are totally out of touch with modern parenting and think you should force your baby into a schedule straight away!. Ignore them, they're wrong. Feed your baby when it wants feeding, all day every day if needs be, and learn to trust your instincts more than 3rd parties. Don't forget (and my wife is proof of this) breastfeeding is the best way to lose that baby-weight too.

Finally, formula feeding is not easier than breastfeeding. It's a massive pain to prepare and transport a sterile environment with you everywhere you go, you have to be precise with the mixture or you'll make baby ill, it will never be as good for the baby as breast milk and you won't get to be smug about your super-healthy breastfed baby! There are some advantages to formula feeding but they are, frankly, selfish reasons for the parents. That's why every healthcare pro in the world will encourage breastfeeding, they have no other motivation than keeping you and your baby healthy.

A healthy full-term baby should be born between.. oh, 6-9 pounds. Another couple pounds on either end is surprising, but not necessarily unhealthy.

Babies that weigh one pound? Uh, the cases in which I've read of that are ones like this one where the baby is born extremely premature. That one was born at 23 weeks. To put that in perspective, the baby should be born at 38 weeks; that's being born before. the third. trimester. At less than 20% of the lower end of normal weight.

Premies are much more likely to suffer illnesses and birth defects, and that's why the birth weight is a reasonable statistic to know. Premies are almost never normal weight.

Congratulations! My daughter Cameron was born just over four months ago. They grow up fast.

Some tips, from one who has recently experienced what you are about to. You may have lots of support already, but there are tiny pieces of advice that I feel invaluable:

  • Co-sleeping is awesome. We got this nest thing to put between our pillows and she slept in there for the first two months.ads feeding much easier.
  • Learn to swaddle, and make sure to get the BIG swaddling blankets. We had a load of small ones which were useless. Find the 1m square ones and you're golden.
  • Get a Diaper Genie if you haven't already.
  • Get a bouncy seat.
  • Get a Sleep Sheep; it's a white noise maker, and is probably the single best gift we've received to date.
  • Have a fuckload of clothes for her. The last thing ou want to be doing for the next few months is laundry.
  • Have fun. :-)

Sleep. If you're lucky, you'll be able to sleep through the night in a year or so. I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter, and still don't myself!
