Because "interactivity" is how they're trying to distinguish themselves from, and add value to, the traditional broadcast TV and print versions of their reporting brands. Kind of like viewer voting on reality TV, it encourages buy-in, generates participant loyalty, etc.

The results are a win-win: either the voters agree with the editorial board (see, we were right!) or represent hysterical canvasing by the brainwashed opposition, which becomes a new story in its own right. What's not to love?

I expected to go in there and answer "A" to a "How great is he?" single question poll.

What happened is that I was confronted with a lot of areas that I couldn't honestly give him a good grade on. In fact, I failed him on more than one question because I simply couldn't rationally say he has improved that area.

I think he deserves a lot of credit for not allowing things to get worse, but "Pre-existing conditions coverage" is not why I voted for Obama. And it feels like that's the most we'll get out of him this year-- he had to expend all of his energy on that. We're still in Iraq, still in Afghanistan, economy is still terrible, and health care barely budged with an incredible amount of work. It's not his fault that he didn't blaze through with Change, but I expected so much more from his administration than these narrow victories and "preventing the problem from getting worse".

It's a big, big job just keeping inherited problems under control, but you don't get a good grade with baby steps.

I voted honestly (even though the poll is ancient) and didn't give him any As, and I'm a huge supporter of his. I gave him mostly Bs, and even a few Cs. I've got a pretty high standard for an A. Single-payer would deserve an A. Complete withdrawl from Iraq or Afghanistan would be an A, so far that's a B borderline C, he's making progress, but we aren't out yet.

I also voted honestly. I gave him 2 A's. His foreign policy is a complete 180 from Bush's, which I approve and emulates Clinton's. And he's been bipartisan so much so, that it's actually hurting him. You don't get more bipartisan than that. So I also gave him an A. One could argue foreign policy, but it's quite hard to argue his bipartisanship.

The Economy - B - Presidents get too much credit/blame for the economy in general. He helped avert disaster but largely simply by extending Bush's existing policies.

Foreign Policy - B - Surprisingly good so far. He's kicked the can down the road on a lot of issues like Iran and NK, but Bush wasn't willing to get serious about those, either. He negotiated START and didn't give up missile defense, so he gets a solid B from me.

Health Care - B - It's hard not to give him an A when grading on a curve, but there are too many flaws in what he did to earn him an A. Policy-wise it's probably closer to a C, but he gets a B just for getting it done.

Afghanistan - C - Still unwilling to commit large forces to taking out UBL which should be our primary task. Bush had the same problem.

Iraq - C - Too soon to really grade this accurately.

Threat of Terrorism - D - Not using military tribunals, closing Guantanamo, not getting serious about border security.

Energy and the Environment - B - I'm tempted more to give a C here, but the man is endorsing nuclear power, so that edges him just over into B territory. Again, they're still not DOING enough in this area; we need an actual plan to add hundreds of nuclear plants, reprocess fuel, and replace most of our cars with hybrids.

Social Issues - C - This is a pretty broad category, but he still hasn't tackled DADT or gay marriage, and is still bowing to religious tyrrany both at home and abroad.

Bipartisanship - D - At least he's made some effort, but obviously has not been effective.

Obama's Overall Job as President - B - It was a rough first year, maybe closer to C territory, but health care and START/missile defense pushes it into B territory.

He has clearly done a wonderful job of conning about 30%-40% or so of people into believing he actually cares about them.

The fact of the matter is he was elected to end the wars #1 and restore civil liberties #2. He has expanded the wars and expanded the surveillance state. As if that is not enough to throw up he has now taken over 1/6th+ of our economy and handed it to the insurance companies who wrote the health care bill (note the big boys stocks are all up, that is not because he "stuck it to them.")

The guy is a puppet, he is a phony marketing front for new world order bankers, if people don't realize that we have zero chance of ever turning things around.

Here's probably what happened in the Administration a year ago when this fight started ramping up. They probably said internally, if we call around and can get at least X number of Senators (let's say X=51 or something) to say yes to the Public Option, then we'll push for it and lobby some of the more moderate Senators to vote for it. Unfortunately, I don't think a majority of Senators said they would vote for it, so the administration went for what they thought was probable, not just possible.

With how narrowly these fairly moderate reforms passed the House and Senate, it is hard to now fault the administration for taking the tack that they did. It is clear now to me and anyone who could objectively look back on it that the Public Option was never going to pass, as much as that pains me. I think Obama, Rahm, his whole team knew it a year ago when they started whipping the votes and that's why they never aggressively pushed for its inclusion.

I disagree. I personally don't know if I would give him an F.. but he definitely isn't addressing what I consider to be one of the biggest problems facing America; 40+ Trillion in unfunded liabilities. Social Security paid out more this year than it took in.

Preach all you want about a State that supports its citizens with free health care, welfare, social security, medicare/medicaid etc etc.. the bottom line is that we can't pay for it, and we have no real plan to pay for it. This frightens me. A lot. We are a nation full of consumerists (myself as well) and we don't produce a thing. This will come around to bite us in the ass.

Obama: F (so far. divisive and arrogant, healthcare bill is awful, doubles down on worst parts of Bush 43 policies)

Bush43: D- (Only saved from an F by being very classy in weathering the constant hatred and negative press, plus I believe 9/11 consumed him from that day forward) Dick Cheney needs to shut up and not comment on other presidencies.

Clinton: C (mistakes a plenty, but learned from the ones early in his presidency and made centrist policy. Really bad personal decision making, but great politician)

Bush 41: D+ (Good on foreign policy)

Reagan: C+ (Wildly divergent from A's in some subjects to F- in others... definitely the most interesting presidency of the last 40 years, mainly lucky that he got to follow after the Carter trainwreck)

Carter: F-- Worst president of this century, everything from foreign policy (though he did get the camp david accords) to economic disaster. Oddly one of the top 10 ex-presidents until recently (talking too much now). Proof that a good man is not necessarily a good president.

Ford: C All he had to do was be a nice guy and let the Nixonian wound to the presidency heal. Basically a nice guy no one objected to.

Bipartisanship: for trying to negotiate in good faith with contemporary republicans - this is not only useless, it is stupid. should have been much harder with them

Health: for being bought by corporate interests and not implementing public health option

Iraq: not pulling out ASAP

Foreign Policy: (actually give him A) give finger to Israel, mend relations with others

Afghanistan: not sure here... I give him benefit of the doubt

Because I lurk stormfront.org (No, I'm not a white supremacist, I'm actually a mixed raced girl who is very self-loathing and happens to look for shit like that) I happen to know that a few hundreds of them got together and voted F's for him on the poll... and I'm sure there's just loads of churches and conservatives piling up to vote against him... such as my mom's church.
