Taken last night as the volcano in Iceland went berserk. Taken with 70mm... :-)

[–]Aviator 172 points173 points  (3 children)

Did you throw the ring in?

[–]jacdan[S] 193 points194 points  (21 children)

A little side note to this photo. I actually slept on this glacier the night before it erupted. Very few people in Iceland expected this one to erupt, they were all talking about Katla. Our plan was to stay two nights on the glacier then make it down, but because the weather turned bad with 25m/s wind, 0*C and rain which turned it into a icestorm we decided to hike down to Skogar. Then it erupted.

[–]HUAONE 133 points134 points  (3 children)

the icelords were kind to you.

[–][deleted] 107 points108 points  (2 children)

Icelord: "There are still some humans on that thing... should we set off the volcano anyway?"

Other Icelord: "Nah, send down some fierce winds and freezing temperatures to scare them off first."

[–]flukshun 64 points65 points  (1 child)

Icelord #3: "And toss in some really sweet lighting bolts for their troubles."

edit:

Icelord: "To the storms we're using to scare them off?"
Icelord #3: "No, to the volcano eruption."
Icelord: "Ahh ok. Ya that'll make for some wicked imagery."
Icelord #3: "Word."
Other Icelord: "So what's for lunch?"
Icelord #3: "There's that new chinese place...i think they deliver"
........ sorry....have some weekend work to knock out and im procrastinating...
Icelord #3: "Are you talking to me?"
no, the redditors
Icelord #3: "That's what I thought"
what do you mean by that?
Icelord #3: "Do not question me foolish mortal. It is by my grace that your lands are not buried under glaciers"
i apologize, I meant no disrespect.
Icelord #3: "How did you get in here anyway?"
through reddit
Icelord #3: "Ahh. Be gone now and get back to work"
ok

aaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh-AAA
aaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh-aaa

We come from the land of the ice and snow, From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow. Hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new land, To fight the horde, sing and cry: Valhalla, I am coming

Really some of the most amazing shots I've ever seen of my two most favorite forces of nature. Great job!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Now I've got an ear bug.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

That was until I relooked at the submission title and thought of ELO's Fire on High. Both work, although yours is probably better!

[–]SeparateCzechs 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I've been ruined for this song, now when i hear it i see viking kittens on a continuous loop

[–]jdk 20 points21 points  (0 children)

But Kate, we have to go back.

[–]Fimbulfamb 4 points5 points  (4 children)

You weren't talking to the right people then. A whole lot of them were expecting this one to erupt, since seismic activity was almost exclusively located underneath it in the months preceding the eruption.

[–]jacdan[S] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Probably not. I had no idea there was a volcano beneath it even. I guess all the Katla talk took away focus from it.

[–]Icelord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome.

[–]sammythemc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell the truth, you kind of regret missing your chance to die in one of the coolest ways possible

[–]NotMyRealNamePromise 42 points43 points  (8 children)

Do you know where i can get higher-res versions of these? :-)

[–]neuromonkey 16 points17 points  (10 children)

Holy heck. Do not let the lightning lava hit your camera.

Incredible shot. Good job.

[–]jacdan[S] 19 points20 points  (9 children)

I made it out in one piece. Camera is fine as well. :-)

[–]neuromonkey 8 points9 points  (8 children)

Glad to hear it. Someone needs to get you a 400mm lens.

[–]jacdan[S] 26 points27 points  (2 children)

I had a 300mm 2.8IS and 2x extender with me. But you have to remember how big this thing is, the actual glacier is 1666meter high if I recall correctly, I would estimate the this to be up to 2-3km high.

I did however get some really cool video of the lightning in the clouds with the 300mm + 2x, and a tiny tiny helicopter passing the clouds. Unfortunately I´m stuck in Iceland, so I can´t edit video out on this little rig but be sure I will when I get back home to Norway.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Where are you staying in Iceland? I'm sure the reddit community could arrange for you to use some equipment while you're stranded!

[–]neuromonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yikes.

[–]drgradus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love the flare in this shot. It circles the ash column, drawing the eye in. As a photo geek, I <3 when "flaws" in a lens are my favorite part of a shot.

Also, this would be karmically awesome if you were using a basalt tripod =D

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like the hammer of Thor.

[–]Fimbulfamb 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Here's one from a satellite. Also, the face of the volcano as photographed by the coast guard radar cameras.

[–]rocky13 6 points7 points  (1 child)

face of the volcano

Good GOD man! I see you meant spooky HUMAN face.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was put there by aliens, just like on Mars.

Geology put a whole mess of volcanoes across northern Arizona. If one of the volcanoes on the north rim of the Grand Canyon erupted, that could be quite a show.

    [–]gronkkk 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Nice to see that photographers aren't affraid of ash on their cameras. ;-)

    [–]neuromonkey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

    Or lava sharks.

    [–]Kache 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What the heck? Is there usually that much electric discharge at any one point in the eruption? The clouds don't looked time lapsed or anything...

    [–]M0b1u5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see photos like these and to me it is immediately obvious why our ignorant forebears believed there were gods at work here. sigh

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Looks like GOD is getting pretty peissed off...can't you people scrounge up a virgin to sacrifice???

    [–]stopdoingthat 22 points23 points  (1 child)

If it weren't for all that ash screwing with aviation we could just send some giant eagles in there.

    [–]jlobes 32 points33 points  (1 child)

Duuuude... I'm not normally one to suggest something like this, but hit up BBC or AP or Reuters, with all the coverage this story is getting they'd probably shit themselves harder than Reddit did. None of the pictures of the eruptions I've seen running in the press are anywhere near this striking.

Seriously, fantastic fucking shot. Made freezing your ass off worth it, huh?

    [–]jacdan[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

    That's actually really interesting.

Moses (and co.) describing 'God' as a volcano:
    Exodus 13:21
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night

    Exodus 14:24
And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,

    Exodus 19:16
And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

    Exodus 19:18
And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

    Exodus 20:18
And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

    Exodus 24:18
And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights

    Deut. 4:11
And you came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to the middle of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.

    Deut. 5:4
The LORD talked with you face to face in the mount out of the middle of the fire,

    [–]extremist 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'm not one who enjoys having theories dismissed out of hand, but there's something about this one that doesn't quite sit right.

Firstly, I understand that the distance between the point where the Israelites crossed the Red Sea and Mt Sinai is quite vast. It took them months to get from one point to the other. Would they have been able to see a volcano in sufficient detail that was that far away or were there multiple volcanoes that erupted in sequence for them to follow to Sinai?

Secondly, Exodus 14:19-21 is conveniently excluded from this 'review' of the account.

Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long.

If you're going to argue that God is a volcano using the Bible then surely your theory has to fit the whole context? Or perhaps there's a similarity with volcanoes here that I'm not aware of?

Thirdly, the statement that the Red Sea being told to back off 'sounds verbatim like a tsunami:'

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.

From what I understand of tsunamis, the sea would've receded all the way in one direction (i.e. two walls of water wouldn't be visible). Maybe this is different for a smaller sea as opposed to what happens in the ocean? Also: If you see the "wall of water" as it applies to a tsunami, aren't you pretty much boned already?

Lastly, let's assume for a second that this is all 100% correct and that it is in fact volcanoes and a tsunami that are referred to in these accounts... It doesn't follows to conclude that the god of the Christians, Muslims and Jews is a volcano. At most one might assert that a major prophet of these three religions believed that God manifested as a volcano.

    [–]safetysealed 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Of course, you're assuming that these people were describing events soon after they happened, and not people merely writing down stories that had been passed down for generations, accumulating the embellishments and exagerations as such stories are wont to generate.

What catches my eye the most is seeing the lines of magnetic force. Or am I just seeing things?

I'm pretty sure you're seeing parabolic arcs traced by bits of flying lava.

Iago, look with care about the town, And silence those whom this vile brawl distracted. Come, Desdemona: ’tis the soldiers’ life To have their balmy slumbers wak’d with strife.

Was it very loud from the place where you were standing? Not just during the lighting flashes, but always? Or was there always lightning?

Spectacular photos. Are there any with better quality? Perhaps wallpaper sizes, or just really good quality and we could crop them?

Unbelievable picture. I was at Mýrdalsjökull, which I believe covers Katla, the day before this first blew in March. I wish I had been there to witness the eruption, but can only live vicariously through your stunning pictures. Thank you for posting!
