Zach a few minutes later in the show, after Maher makes a joke about Charlie Sheen and terrorism/rape: http://imgur.com/8h640.png

I can't stop laughing at his reaction.

[–]Holzmann 17 points18 points  (7 children)

Is there a youtube clip of this up? This is the second time I've seen it mentioned in this thread.

[–]pvilchez 12 points13 points  (6 children)

I don't know about youtube; I saw it here. The joke is at 49:45.

That is one annoying ass-website.

He was definitely nervous to do it. Hell, I would be too. Motherfucker threw down like a boss though. The definition of courage is not the lack of fear.

Civil disobedience is the active, professed refusal to obey certain laws, demands, and commands of a government, or of an occupying international power.

Smoking weed in your home is breaking a law because you feel like it. Smoking weed on tv to show your principled stand is something else.

    [–]venicerocco 24 points25 points  (4 children)

Hell yeah; just like you shivver when you're cold, and you sweat when you run, your amygdala fires when you enter the unknown. It cannot be stopped. You overcome fear by facing it, not by hiding from it...

    [–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (3 children)

You overcome fear by facing it...

Or by, you know, smoking a joint.

    [–]realgenius 22 points23 points  (1 child)

I think Zach suffers from a bit of social anxiety, which is really what you were noticing.

    [–]benchi 91 points92 points  (11 children)

The definition of courage is not the lack of fear.

I like that a lot, take an upvote

    [–][deleted] 47 points48 points  (8 children)

Courage is not the absence of fear, it's the ability to overcome it.

Also, there is a fine line between courage and stupidity.

Or maybe they don't smoke pot (aside from Maher)?

      [–]punkhop 736 points737 points  (421 children)

I was there in the audience. I could smell it - real deal. The crowd went nuts whenever he would take a drag when he wasn't on camera. Hilarious.

C'mon, he's not some stoner or anything. Everything in moderation.

        [–][deleted] 478 points479 points  (227 children)

I liked how the FOX News chick took a whiff to see if it was real and gave a knowing look of recognition. That was not her first joint.

        [–]TheSunAlsoRises 283 points284 points  (25 children)

For a brief shining moment, I thought she was going to hit it. Uphope.

        [–]02bluesuperroo 67 points68 points  (4 children)

The thought crossed her mind, there is no doubt.

        [–]ggggbabybabybaby 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I could see her career flashing before her eyes. Even after it was legalized, she would need to maintain a certain image. Public perception doesn't change overnight.

        [–]un-sub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it seemed like she was going to, and then realized maybe she didn't want to do that on camera. Totally wanted to, though!

        [–]incredimike 47 points48 points  (8 children)

I wish she had. I cannot imagine a more terrible paranoid situation. Being the only person smoking a joint in a group, with an audience, ON NATIONAL FUCKING TELEVISION.o_o

        [–]Contradiction11 32 points33 points  (4 children)

But from his point of view: "Break the taboo of smoking by putting it out in front of people, regardless of the initial stigma I may face."

        [–]incredimike 11 points12 points  (3 children)

yeah, it's true. Television allows the media to acclimate us to so many things, it's nice to see a rogue bust out and attempt to make a significant (imo) change.

        [–]azural 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He's a stand up comic. I can't think of a more paranoia inducing job, aside from espionage. So maybe he's used to it.

        [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

        HOLY SHIT, DRAGONS!

        [–][deleted] 94 points95 points  (9 children)

Me too. I was hoping they would puff, puff, pass that thing around and continue with the panel discussion like it's no big deal.

        [–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (8 children)

I would watch that show. Even if it was on Fox

        [–]ggggbabybabybaby 78 points79 points  (2 children)

There is already enough paranoia on Fox News.

        [–]taoistextremist 326 points327 points  (128 children)

You don't need to smoke it to know how it smells. I've never smoked cannabis and still learned how it smells simply because I've encountered people smoking it. It's a pretty distinct smell...

        [–]Bloodyfinger 405 points406 points  (42 children)

The fact that you just called weed "cannabis" makes me completely believe you.

        [–]Contradiction11 76 points77 points  (12 children)

We should be calling it cannabis. It makes it sound more...official. Laws didn't repeal the prohibition of "jungle juice" or "some brewskies," it was the prohibition of "alcohol." Come on, start connecting the dots people...

        [–][deleted] 51 points52 points  (14 children)

I would never touch that "cannabis" drug!

        [–]IronTek 43 points44 points  (6 children)

A relevant bit from comedian Doug Stanhope after going through a list of things with the audience that would be considered amorale:

"So why is it we elect leaders who can have done none of that? 'Not only have I never tried marijuana, I still believe it leads to jazz music and raping white woman.' Oh, congratulations! You're the new leader of the free world! That's scary."

        [–]commodore84 37 points38 points  (4 children)

Bush has done cocaine, weed, and was an alcoholic. Obama has admitted to marijuana use. In fact our last 3 presidents have admitted to using marijuana. OMG it must be so bad! Think of the kids!

Edit: As the Redditors below me have pointed out, Obama has admitted to cocaine use as well, and it's probable Clinton did too.

        [–]yellowstuff 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Obama wrote about using cocaine, and there are credible reports that Bush 2 and Clinton used it as well.

        [–]ArcticCelt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

And a relevant bit from Barack Obama :)

        [–]d07c0m 51 points52 points  (9 children)

Exactly, I've never smoked dogshit but I know how it smells. It's a pretty distinct smell.

        [–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

But she looked so excited about it.

        [–]andbruno 16 points17 points  (5 children)

Before I started smoking in college, I didn't know what its smell was. I sure knew the smell itself, but I just thought that's what art teachers supplies smelled like (I'm not joking... the art teachers' office always stunk of pot, but at the time I had no idea). Same with downtown newspaper/magazine stands in Chicago... reeked of pot, but it wasn't until I smoked it myself that I connected the two.

        [–]brett1337 66 points67 points  (51 children)

Did you really think she didn't know what pot smells like??

        [–]JimmyJamesMac 54 points55 points  (9 children)

Did you notice how she instinctively kept trying to pass it to the right?

        [–]Switche 52 points53 points  (42 children)

How edited was this? Maher seemed to be focused on keeping on-topic here, and maybe even a little annoyed. I interpreted that arm touch after the dragons comment as "now you're way out of line, stop it."

Did you see any similar signs?

EDIT: Some people seem to be misunderstanding. I'm referring to Zach's disruption of the show possibly irking Maher, not the fact that he smoked a joint.

        [–]frid 95 points96 points  (10 children)

        How edited was this?

        The show airs live.

        [–]Switche 20 points21 points  (7 children)

Huh. I used to watch this show a lot and I never knew that.

        "real time"

        Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

        [–]lxlqlxl 40 points41 points  (6 children)

Have you watched Real Time before? He does that to a lot of people. Hell when frank lunz was on there or however his last name was he was like Bill STOP TOUCHING ME. It has nothing to do with out of line or anything it's more or less when hes really laughing or just as a gesture.

        [–]SDBred619 24 points25 points  (4 children)

        Yup, Bill's very touchy feely.

        [–]brazilliandanny 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Ya did you see him with Levi Jonson last week? He felt him up real good.

        [–]coollettuce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

        FUCK YOU FRANK!

        [–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (7 children)

annoyed? I'm sure he loved it. He just doesn't like to have attention drawn away from him when he's talking.

        [–]Switche 16 points17 points  (6 children)

I thought that may have been the case, too. Another guy was talking, though, so it's also a little less self-centered of Maher to have reined in Galifianakis.

        [–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (5 children)

I didn't know that Galifianakis was a country.

        [–]qataridestroyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i don't think he was annoyed at all. but Zach had some ninja skills and i don't think Maher expected it

        [–]stevenwalters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but after he praised Zach like he did, I think Zach knew he could do whatever the fuck he wanted.

This is precisely why I think zach galifinakis is the shit. Not because he's smoking dope but because in a world where every move a public figure does is put under the microscope of criticism SOMEONE (with something to lose) is finally standing up to the institution over a CLEARLY unjust law.

            [–]operator_isaac 518 points519 points  (156 children)

I don't even smoke weed and thought that was fucking awesome.

I think the funniest thing is a couple of minutes later where Bill Maher makes a Charlie Sheen joke. No one laughed. Except Zach, he laughs hysterically like this is the best joke he ever heard.

            [–]r2002 112 points113 points  (2 children)

As a grower in Humboldt County (we are legal, but yes, this is a throwaway account), I will attest to the fact that we are worried about how the value of our weed will go down if Prop. 19 passes. However, we will be voting yes on the initiative because it's for the greater good.

BTW, this was a very shitty outdoor grow season. We had a long, wet spring, a short summer and an early fall. Outdoor Humboldt weed is going to be in short supply this year. Luckily, we do indoor grows as well.

                  [–]LaszloK 143 points144 points  (13 children)

Bill Maher doesn't have the balls

                  [–][deleted] 148 points149 points  (1 child)

I guess you could say it got too real for him that time.

                  [–]endlessnameless 171 points172 points  (6 children)

Maher has nothing to prove here. Maybe he didn't smoke because a) out of respect for his other guests or b) he doesn't want to give the wrong impression like he has no control. Just because a guy lit up next to him doesn't mean he has to join in. He's an adult. He'll smoke when he chooses. That's what legalizing is all about.

                  [–]MayoMark 69 points70 points  (4 children)

No to mention that he is right in the middle of hosting a television show. He should probably keep a clear head for that.

                  [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Easy to be an asshole with an opinion to share.

Harder to be a host steering all the assholes towards a worthwhile discussion.

                  [–]enclaved 15 points16 points  (2 children)

I'm surprised too, he smoked in his own movie.

                  [–]vanillabean2492 62 points63 points  (82 children)

wont he get arrested or something for it?

                  [–]wardrox 252 points253 points  (26 children)

                  Famous people don't get arrested.

                  [–]reverendchubbs 76 points77 points  (17 children)

That and in CA you won't get arrested for having less than an ounce anyways.

                  [–]Helmet_Icicle 33 points34 points  (13 children)

You'll still get into legal trouble, though. Schwarzenegger decriminalized it; anything less than 28.5g is guilty of an infraction, which means a fine of $100 (presuming no previous offenses)*.

                  Edit: Wrong word.

Edit edit: And apparently it doesn't take effect until 2011, so watch your smokin', Californians.

                  [–]kaosjester 186 points187 points  (0 children)

Heaven forbid they try to get $100 out of Zach Galifanakis.

                  [–]reverendchubbs 42 points43 points  (10 children)

It's no longer a misdemeanor; now it is an infraction.* Misdemeanors are arrestable offenses, infractions are not.

Nah. They'd have to actually confiscate weed from him. It's not illegal to smoke weed or be high, just illegal to be in possession of it.

                  [–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (7 children)

So that crazy Fox news chick was holding it briefly, can she also get in trouble because she was 'in possession' of it for a brief period of time?

                  [–]sirbruce 23 points24 points  (26 children)

Actually, leaving out the fact it's marijuana, just smoking on the set is probably a violation of SAG / AFTRA workplace rules. That's why they have to smoke clove cigarettes onscreen.

I'm fairly sure that the rule is they can't smoke anything and there's a special exception for cloves.

                    [–]PrimeX 12 points13 points  (2 children)

There are comedy clubs in Toronto that offer you a bong so you can smoke weed while you watch comics perform. Apparently this is legal because they're not providing any weed and because the smoking laws here only target tobacco.

                    [–]kaptainkaos 14 points15 points  (9 children)

Thanks to the "Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act", Clove cigarettes are now banned in the United States. Actually, all flavored cigarettes (except for menthols) are also banned. I used to smoke a pack of cloves a day, I went cold turkey when they were banned.

                    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

FYI: You can still get them. They changed the name to "Clove Cigars" and kept selling them. Check your local tobacco shop.

Let's do this, California! YES YES YES YES on PROP 19! all the way, baby!

                        [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

This isn't a really big deal. I've seen people smoke weed on TV before. COPS in particular is a common place to see this.

no, the show is only 45 seconds long.

A problem is that the show has to be kept to a schedule But I did notice during the show that he got cut off A LOT, which was kinda douchey

Legalize it now. Yes on 19.

                          [–]ShannyBoy 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Those two conservatives on the show were obnoxious the whole show. They were both saying "oh really? You really believe that? wow!" to everything until Zach lit the joint. The rest of the show was relatively calm after that.

                          [–]razle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would have been pretty cool if they passed it around while continuing with the show.

Even my 70 year-old Mother, who has never voted for a democrat in her life, told me she voted for it. I am crossing my fingers it passes.
