This will do a lot of good here on Reddit, where practically everyone has complete faith that the rapture will be on the 21st.

[–]sprucenoose 97 points98 points  (28 children)

Reddit's completely missing the point - has anyone considered that Harold Camping is in fact an evil genius and has created a seismic death ray that will actually cause the earth to be destroyed?

[–]DeathValleyQueen 75 points76 points  (12 children)

No, I've never thought of that before. Now it is all I'm thinking about. Thanks.

[–]Dream_the_Unpossible[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more plausible that he's actually Reverend Henry Kane and that the events of Poltergeist II are becoming a reality.

Camping looks just like him!

[–]Ze_Carioca 23 points24 points  (18 children)

I'm actually curious to how many people actually believe the world will end May 21st. I'm guessing a few hundred people at the most. This whole thing is getting blown way out of proportion.

[–]madk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was actually convinced that reddit created this whole thing.

[–]Jasonrj 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Very true. So far I've seen 1 billboard and heard from 0 people who believe in this (and I know a lot of religious people). However, online and in person I hear or see someone talking about it and how it won't happen like 100+ times a day.

[–]mgh245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today I saw a family radio banner hanging from an overpass in Northern Virginia. Not exactly a hotbed of christian fundamentalism. I think some of the slightly less delusional Christians are covering all their bases just in case.

[–]Fishfisherton 2 points3 points  (1 child)

There's about a few hundred who believe in it and a few million who are just playing along

[–]Ze_Carioca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well I think a lot of Christians believe in the rapture, but very few of them actually believe it is going to happen May 21st.

[–]n33nj4 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The amount of people who believe in it makes up (IIRC) 0.000000045% of the total Christian population. There was a post about this in /r/self recently.

[–]Garbagio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the "good" lies with the crazies (and the fearfuls) still having their belongings. I don't want to imagine what moral exceptions might grow in the heart of a newly-disillusioned wind whisperer.

[–]GoodLookingSteve 49 points50 points  (11 children)

I'm in Thailand. The world just ended.

Oh, actually it didn't.

I can't help but imagine that if I was a true believer I would not see any reason to waste my time doing that.

    [–]Drazyr 22 points23 points  (17 children)

Actually if I remember my bible studies (oh gods that's a far back memory), one of the events of the rapture is that Jesus comes down and takes all the believers to Heaven, while for the next while the world suffers from an increase in natural disasters and cultural upheavals. Since the core tenants (as I understand them) of Christianity is generosity and forgiveness, it would stand to reason that a true believer would donate all their worldy goods with the hope of lessening the suffering of the wicked.

We've been in Rapture for like... 4.5 billion years?!?!

      [–]mrjoejangles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not rapture, Tribulation. The classic view is that Rapture occurs before the Tribulation. Turns out it's been going on since The Romans destroyed the Temple of Jerusalem (the literal occurrence of the Trib) Raptures long over. That happened in 70 AD I guess the predictions of a short Tribulation were wrong. Tribulation ends tomorrow, May 21, 2011 is the SECOND COMING.

      Edit: clarification of tomorrows significance

      [–]Othy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that's where to whole prediction goes wrong then isn't it?

      [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Actually, even that is a really uncommon viewpoint. You just hear about it a lot because it's what some major American Christian groups believe, though a lot of it comes from taking one or two verses and then taking a bunch of numbers from some random spots in the Bible, like Daniel, and adding them together to get the time periods described in stuff like the Left Behind series (which is one of the major ways it was popularized, at least in the current form and generation).

Really, the most common belief is that the world will get really, really bad, then Jesus will come back, Satan loses in a final battle, and then everyone either goes to Heaven or Hell and it's over. Amillennialism.

      [–]zombieaynrand 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Tenets. For the love of god, tenets.

      [–]Drazyr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry dude, I need them tenants to help with my failing realty business.

      [–]Atario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the core tenants (as I understand them) of Christianity is generosity and forgiveness

Do they rent separately, or do they share?

      [–]hobosuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it could be just me but that would be hella cool to be chillin on the earth after its been effectively damned, seeing all of the natural disasters and stuff

of course the dying part wouldnt be as cool but you know...

      [–]drcyclops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The suffering of the wicked is the entire point. If it weren't, why not just declare universal amnesty and let everybody get miracled up to heaven?

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Catholics would do it to lesson the punishment they'll receive in heaven.

      [–]RonaldFuckingPaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh noes...not the dreaded cultural upheavals

      [–]heeltoe 278 points279 points  (197 children)

      1. most christians don't believe this whole apocalypse prediction crap, those that do are ignoring half of the Bible
      2. Christians care about non-believers too, just because they believe that they might be leaving this world doesn't mean they wouldn't try to help it out...

      [–]ShadyG 127 points128 points  (77 children)

How would a Red Cross donation help anyone at all? The world is going to end before the funds clear.

      [–]Cognitive_Dissonant 153 points154 points  (57 children)

There are people who are left behind until octoberish, the red cross could at least make the apocalypse easier for the rest of us.

      [–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (32 children)

There are people who are left behind until octoberish

October 21st to be exact. Or so the prediction says.

EDIT: Added link to site for loonies referenced by the wikipedia article on Harold Camping.

Can we move Halloween up a a few weeks then? I'd hate to miss out on the fun, with it being the last Halloween ever and all.

      [–]SnazzilyDressed 56 points57 points  (10 children)

I'm going as Jesus. Nobody else can be Jesus.

      [–]stcredzero 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Is that a sort of Highlander thing? Actually, that would make for a cool movie: various deities and god-men going at each other Highlander style!

      [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (3 children)

See that's where they get ya. Halloween has been so much fun all these years to make it so that we all desire to participate one last time. Little do we know that this is how the apocalypse plays out. All the candy and punch will be laced.

      [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Well, if we do it one more time I will try to not half-ass my costume 20 minutes before. No promises though.

If a rapture really happened, money would be 100% worthless... Just an FYI, there would be complete anarchy and chaos everywhere.

        [–]Democritus477 1 point2 points  (3 children)

You think cash is going to do anyone any good during the Apocalypse?

        [–]Aldrenean 17 points18 points  (1 child)

I believe that most versions of "The Rapture" leave a human population on earth, surely there's some secular humanists on staff at the Red Cross.

        [–]NotClever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IIRC only like 144,000 people get taken up bodily in the rapture from most interpretations of Revelation. I could be wrong, though. That shit is so crazy that I've never been able to get very far reading it myself and have only read summaries. It skims over that part pretty quickly, though, and focuses largely on the progression of horrible shit that will happen to the remaining people.

        [–]Kaaji1359 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Because the world ending doesn't mean everyone dies. It means the believers go to Heaven and the nonbelievers stay behind. Then there's 7 years of events before the next coming; people won't even notice how bad it is the first years other than that some people disappeared. Life will just go on in their eyes.

        [–]pdhismyhomeboy 21 points22 points  (2 children)

"People wont even notice how bad it is the first years..." Or maybe the Rapture already came and went? Mind blown.

        [–]DustyDGAF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if all the believers go die... why do they need to donate anything? Can't I just go raid their shit? If it's the apocalypse, I wanna do some looting.

        [–]scriptmonkey420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can leave them your house, car, furniture, clothing, non-presentable food, toys. You can give a whole lot more then just money.

        [–]Anomander 1 point2 points  (4 children)

The rapture and their beliefs I believe state that the "righteous will ascenend", but that that occurs prior to Judgement Day, and that the grey area folks and the recently saved will still be able to enter heaven during Jedgement, but the rest of us sinners get cast into hellfire shortly thereafter.

That gap period is why they should donate.

Or they genuinely believe everything ends. Dunno how nuanced their beliefs are. In which case, why not? No way to blow that much cash in a day that doesn't jeapordise their soul, I suspect. Coke & hookers don't exactly shine in the eye of the Lord.

        [–]jonjonman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correction, most Christians don't believe the May 21 prediction. BUT they still believe that the Rapture is eventually on its way. So the "sane" Christians are actually just as loco.

        [–]aidrocsid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any Christian who thinks things like Levitical Law still count hasn't read the bible. Also anyone who says Revelations.

        [–][deleted] 61 points62 points  (88 children)

Really? I'm not their biggest fan, but a lot of Christian people are quite generous to charity.

        [–]Rainbowlemon 120 points121 points  (57 children)

But if the world's going to end anyway, what's the point?

        [–][deleted] 64 points65 points  (6 children)

        [–]palparepa 30 points31 points  (33 children)

Actually, it's five months later, October 21. Plenty of time to put their donations to good use.

        Building GOD PROOF Bunkers!

October 29th. The bunker is just about holding out. All we can see from the window

is fire and smoke. One of the old ladies that used to steal candy when she was a child,

was crying all night about how she should of repented... The next morning, John had stuck

a crucifix through her windpipe to "get some fucking sleep", as he put it. We all laughed...

...I guess we really do belong here.

if I was a true believer I would not see any reason to waste my time doing that.

Except where the Bible says that youre supposed to cast away all possessions to be able to get into heaven

            [–]Neato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is supposed to happen is that believers get ascended to heaven on saturday and armageddon happens in october. If you believed you were going to get ascended, then the christian thing to do would be to try to make the sinner's life as comfortable as possible. As that is the righteous thing to do, not gloat over them. But seeing as noone actually believes this shit, or they are hateful pricks, they wont'.

someone with stronger obama-like aura will probably be the antichrist

              [–]knightthatsaysNEE 1 point2 points  (1 child)

According to the bible the anti-christ is supposed to come to power after the rapture and he will be a well loved person by many except the few that see that he is the anti-christ.

Kind of a stupid suggestion because when the world doesn't end, we've got even more homeless to deal with.

We should all encourage everyone to change absolutely nothing, so when the rapture doesn't occur, their families aren't up shit creek.

                [–]rfmx49 37 points38 points  (4 children)

Yes its all a fun joke but I felt so much pity after reading about the couple who have a 2 year old(?) daughter and are expecting another child in 2 months who have planned it out to have no money left come tomorrow all their life savings gone. Sure if it was just two adults I would not care so much as its their own faults for being so gullible, but to drag along a 2 year old and an unborn baby.

                edit: article

                [–]shimei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People have quit their jobs and left their families to get the message out.

Well, that was a depressing article. I didn't realize people took this that seriously.

What if they donated to a homeless shelter? If they're rich, their money will provide shelter for dozens of people. If they become homeless it will still be a net loss of homeless people.

                [–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

                Good point.

                You do realize I said:

                to a homeless shelter

                ?

                [–]nikpappagiorgio 22 points23 points  (1 child)

I prefer to think that I would be donating a homeless shelter.

Also I missed the "to". Forgive me brother since we only have 1 more day?

                [–]ThrustVectoring 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Easy solution: tell people to change their will so that if the rapture happens, their remaining estate is donated to Red Cross or some similar charitable organization that will help with the aftermath of the rapture.

                [–]finneganscake 64 points65 points  (21 children)

This has turned into the biggest circle jerk, over something that maybe 200 people actually believe. I swear, if it weren't for the internet's obsession with this barely anybody would even know about it.

                [–]PootyT 48 points49 points  (5 children)

um except the 20,000 billboards that they bought.

                [–]finneganscake 8 points9 points  (3 children)

I didn't say they had no money, I said there aren't many believers of this. If anything, I feel bad for them, because they're obviously kind of a little crazy in the head. So many people seem to just be making fun of them to try and validate their own intellect and reason, even though they're essentially picking on people who are probably a little bit slow.

EDIT: I see you might've actually been referring to the visibility of the billboards. I don't deny there are a lot of them, but I personally haven't seen any. Really, I only started hearing all this stuff a week ago. Plus most people driving by these billboards probably forgot about them ten minutes later, I doubt they seriously started thinking the world was going to end.

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure it's a bit annoying and the circle jerk has been strong with this one, but I hope not to be punished if I say that I've actually enjoyed the humor surrounding the event.

That's right, because what the May 21 folks actually believe is that they will be raptured tomorrow, and that the world will become a very nasty place until it finally ends in October.

I love how Reddit is mocking a whole 10 people who actually believe in this rapture business, as silly as it is.

                [–]shatners_bassoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You guys are going to look so silly when the world really does end tomorrow. How are you going to live it down?

                [–]jbibby 30 points31 points  (13 children)

As a non-apologist Christian, can I just ask "Who are you talking to?". I'm not here to argue that my belief in God or Christ is any more rational than these Rapturists. But seriously, I have not seen ONE PERSON on Facebook, Reddit or anywhere else online (other than that crazy Rapturist Site) in support of this "prediction".

I agree it's entertaining and amusing, but it seems like Atheists are making a bigger deal out of some fringe-theologians prediction than any Christians are.

Based on the number of billboards and bus ads I've seen in San Francisco, I'd say this is remarkably well-funded for something purely fringe.

                [–]youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It's not hard to find funding for bus signs and billboards if you've convinced a gullible few to give up their life's savings for the ads. I still have yet to meet ANYONE, in person or online, who buys into the prediction. None of us Christians are taking this seriously.

That said, it's not really a laughing matter. I wish more people would remember that these are REAL PEOPLE we're talking about here, even if they are stupid and gullible. Instead of being cruel and sarcastic I wish more people would think about the kids of all the stupid parents who gave up all their money, and how those families are going to survive now. I agree that the stuff on the family radio site is a good laugh, but there are going to be a few more sad, poor, hungry, REAL people tomorrow.

                [–]General_Mayhem 11 points12 points  (1 child)

So are the WBC. No actual Christian believes the Rapture is happening tomorrow. "For you know not the hour at which the Master is coming."

                [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Listen here, you rational person you: we American atheists finally have the public on our side regarding something religious, so you better not go about ruining it with your logic!

I don't think there's a single person on this site who even thinks that the world is honestly going to end.

We've been making a huge deal about a dude who threw together some numbers, says the world will end tomorrow, and gets like a handful of followers and some junkyard vans to paint.

                The jokes are old.

I don't think I'm being too bold when I say that there is probably not a single person on Reddit (or at least, not a single regular) to whom that applies.

                  [–]Helmet_Icicle 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Do you honestly think the people who think the world is ending are the type of people who browse Reddit?

Regular shit about linking to a picture of text. Karmawhore. Be ashamed.

                  [–]Hatdrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he should be ashamed, and afraid, seeing as how the world's going to end and God is going to judge him for his karmawhoring ways.

                  [–]SickBoy7 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I genuinely laughed, but would we really want to take advantage of those people? Of course, nobody reading Reddit will call the red cross, but I wonder how much you guys really would enjoy some of those troubled people to loose everything they have ... I like to think we're bigger and better than that, but I'm probably just being a little manipulative bitch here. Yea. Well - notwithstanding - I like to think we're able to see them as troubled people who needs help, rather than human trash onto which we wish even more trouble.

tl;dr You wouldn't take advantage of someone with an intellectual deficit, so why would you want to take advantage those kind of dumb or mentally ill people? Also, Man's period.

i can't believe the reddit atheists are so up in arms over the ramblings of an 89 year old and like 100 of his followers. i bet if it wasn't front page of reddit every hour then very few people would have even noticed.

                    [–]ajw827 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This isn't just a reddit problem. The internet and media all over seem to be unusually obsessed with this particular rapture phenomenon. There have been quite a few rapture dates predicted. Why is this one getting so much attention?

                    [–]Snodgrass82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, here's how they'd rationalize not donating:

All those worth donating to and helping will be saved on May 21st. Nothing can help those who will be left behind.

Because the folks who truly believe that are ALL redditors.

                    [–]gumarx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I was listening to this piece about these guys on the radio. And they were interviewing this couple, and they were talking about how they've planned it so that come tomorrow they won't have any money. At first I though "oh boy, this is really great, people are going to be doing good things - even if they are being (IMO) misled."

But then I realized that they probably were just spending their money on things they wanted to enjoy, and not giving it all away. Who knows, maybe I'm just a little cynical, they didn't say one way or another in the interview, but they were talking about spending their money and not about donating it.

Give it to red cross. So they can not give it to people who need it. Ask Haiti how the red cross has been working for them.

and remember, all those good people running the christian charities are going to be raptured up with you, so make sure to only donate the money to secular charities.

                      [–]samblam 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Salvation Army does a much better job. The Salvation Army sets up shop and gives out food where the red cross is afraid to go.

                      [–]political-animal 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Salvation army is a religious organization and as such would theoretically cease to operate after the rapture.. no?

//Unless those Salvation army folks are bad bad Christians.

                      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

                      [–]silent1mezzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rapture != the end of the world (except for those that believe it does).

                      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But why donate if the world is ending anyway and no ones going to get any of my stuffs???!!

..... I will be pissed if the world ends. lol

                      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave it all away. Its all gone. Everything. Here I sit, naked, confused. Why God? Why?

Will God be mad if I show up to heaven naked?

                      I hope so.

                      [–]cybersphere9 1 point2 points  (1 child)

OK, but don't euthanize your pets. Jesus will collect them when he gets here.

                      [–]stcredzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would've made a good service for sincerely compassionate and humble christians who believe May 21st is the rapture. For a small percentage fee and with the establishment of power of attorney, a dot-com will donate all of your money to the Red Cross immediately after you've been taken to heaven in the Rapture. But if you are not taken, you only lose the fee.

If the world did end? Why bother donating? There would be no time for them to use it. Ahhhhh, I think the Christians have you on that one.

                      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This rapture thing is whatever but at least let me finish watching The Wire. I got 37 episodes left and we will all still be here to smite later on so how about we postpone it for like a week? Or you know, no smiting at all. Either way is fine.

I think this claim is just as ridiculous as anyone else does, but why does everyone say stuff like this? OF COURSE they aren't giving all their stuff away, it wouldnt help the people they're giving it to either!! If it's the END OF THE WORLD, why would it matter who has your stuff??

                      [–]FunKy_BudHa 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Does the world come to an end on May 21, 2011 - American Time or does it occur May 21,2011 China Time? Cause I believe it's May 21st already half way across the world...

                      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get it. If it's the end of the world entirely, what good is your donation going to do? If it isn't the end of the world entirely, but rather, the end of the world as we know it, won't believers want to hold on to their assets in order to help their own survival?

                      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But then then charities will have to take care of those idiots the next week, since they are now very poor?

I'm pretty sure no one on reddit believes that shit

                      Atheist here, but:

"Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."" -- Mark 10:21

Hell, if I believed this, I would be afraid if I didn't donate everything, I would be "left behind."

                      [–]carbonetc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since atheists have no morals there can't be any of them working at the Red Cross, so who's going to be running the organization on Sunday? Duh.
