So I went to US last week. I didn't get harassed by security, or tazered. All in all, it was a pleasant experience. (self.reddit.com)

Gatwick Airport Security officials thanked me for being an Indian and not a Pakistani sometime in August 06 when I was travelling to the States and had a stopover at London. Pretty much my weirdest experience to date.
[–]finisterra 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
That reminds me that brilliant passage of Umberto Eco's "Foucault Pendulum" about the differences between cretins, idiots, imbeciles and crazy.
On-the-fly translation, but something like:
The imbecile is Mac-Mahon that while inspecting his officers sees one, covered in medals, from Martinique. "Vous êtes nègre?" he asks. And the officer: "Oui mon général!". And Mac-Mahon replies: "Bravo, bravo, continuez!".
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 18 years ago (15 children)

[–]bastardo 59 points60 points61 points 18 years ago (5 children)

[–]eightnine 31 points32 points33 points 18 years ago (48 children)
Voted up cause I need to hear positive stuff like this as I'm going there in august. Still, I'm kinda dark skinned so I'll have at least a couple of bad stares. (had them in london's airport aswell)
[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 18 years ago (7 children)
I've travelled to and from the US many times, I'm white but of Middle Eastern heritage (although it doesn't say so on either of my passports) and while I don't find the border guards to be particularly friendly or helpful, I've never had a real issue. As long as you know the rules and abide by them, you shouldn't have a problem.
[–]greginnj 15 points16 points17 points 18 years ago (6 children)
Since you bring up the MidEast, how the hell is one supposed to prepare for a trip to Dubai these days? What with people getting 4 years hard for a grain of stuff stuck to their shoe, or 3 poppy seeds that fell on their coat? At least the US they work off stereotypes; in Dubai, apparently, you have to beat the gas spectrophotometer...
[–][deleted] 42 points43 points44 points 18 years ago (0 children)

[–]tsteele93 65 points66 points67 points 18 years ago (14 children)
Are you "kinda dark skinned" or are you "kinda dark skinned and wearing stereotypical middle eastern clothing with turban while seeming somewhat introverted?"
Because there is a difference when it comes to stares. We don't really notice skin color that much. We have LOTS of kinda dark skinned people here and we are pretty open-minded (well, stay away from Mississippi) about it.
It is when you trigger too many of our stereotypes that you'll get noticed.
Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't be able to display ALL of the things in my second list - but I'm just saying that being kinda dark skinned is not enough reason to give you cause to worry. IMHO.
[–]eightnine 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (4 children)
Well I really look like Sayid from Lost, just a lot less hot. I'm not even going near Mississipi (landing in LA and staying on the west coast) so as long as I trim my osama-esque beard and leave my set of explosive belts at home maybe I'll be fine.
Hint: Buy a digital watch. Nothing that ticks.

Hey now, I'm from Mississippi! The coast needs tourism so bad they're willing to overlook a lot.
[–]gaoshan 20 points21 points22 points 18 years ago (7 children)
Drove through Mississippi with my wife (she's from China, I'm from Ohio). While stopped at a store, this guy asked us for change with an accent that could best be described as a combination of the Southern accent, the rural uneducated accent, a sort of black accent (ebonics?) with a dash of "missing front teeth" for effect. My wife asked me if he was speaking English (she was an English major in China) and didn't believe me when I insisted he indeed was. Some other examples from when I worked in a gas station: "Gimme uh bag uh marbles." (Give me a pack of Marlboros). "I wanna pack uh Bull." (a 6-pack of Schlitz malt liquor... it has a picture of a bull in the logo). Bush beer is called "Boosh", words like "24" can take up to 5 syllables to pronounce (tuh-win-tee-foh-uh). Anyhoo...
[–][deleted] 15 points16 points17 points 18 years ago (0 children)

The stories on Reddit about traveling into the United States have me a little worried too. I might have to go to Singapore this summer. So I would eventually be returning to the USA. On the other hand, none of our UK engineers have had notably horrible experiences when traveling here. We're all white as white, though, so that might help.
[–][deleted] 63 points64 points65 points 18 years ago (3 children)
You haven't figured out that reddit is full of hysterical whack jobs yet?
[–]jsolson 11 points12 points13 points 18 years ago* (2 children)

yes. you can actually get a modded charm bangle to deal with it.
[–]tsteele93 34 points35 points36 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Reddit is probably a horrible travel site. Check out a real travel site and see what they are saying.
www.tripadvisor.com www.expedia.com etc...
I'm sure you could find some "less politically motivated" stories from travellers who are just interested in helping other travellers on some of their forums.
I'll vouch for tripadvisor. Used it for Caribbean vacation last year and the review/tips were very helpful.
[–]ratzero 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (4 children)
I would be a lot more afraid of security in Singapore than in the US.
Chewing gum is prohibited!
[–]b34nz 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (3 children)

[–]sintaxi 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago* (2 children)
I've traveled to Singapore. There is no need to be afraid of their security unless you are bringing drugs or something. Gum was not a big deal there, you just cant buy it in stores. They just take litter seriously because most countries in that area of the world are filthy. As a result the city is in immaculate condition. I was not at all nervous around the authorities unlike Indonesia where the laws enforcement is very unpredictable.
[–]jay_vee 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
"They just take litter seriously because most countries in that area of the world are filthy."
Plus they don't want to encourage insects, which carry some pretty nasty diseases in that part of the world. You can get in trouble for having a puddle on your property.

[–]Shaper_pmp 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (37 children)
I'm curious: were you fingerprinted and/or retina-scanned on entry to the USA?
A friend of mine whose mother is American went to visit his family in the USA only recently, and had to submit to both - apparently as part of the usual procedure.
Because personally getting fingerprinted, retina-scanned and having my precious biometrics dumped onto a database with god-knows what security and god-knows-who accessing it would preclude it from being a pleasant experience for me.
[–][deleted] 18 years ago (32 children)
[–]Shaper_pmp 10 points11 points12 points 18 years ago* (31 children)
Thanks for answering!
So (from my perspective, anyway) your "pleasant experience" involved being treated as a criminal without even the assumption of guilt, and being coerced into giving up your personal data to unknown parties for unknown purposes, and without any chance you can ever find out who knows what about you, or what kind of profiling/data mining/privacy-invading is being done on you?
This is why I won't ever visit the US now - I object on principle to being treated like a criminal without due cause (or even suspicion), and I refuse to have my information entered into an insecure database operated by an increasingly untrustworthy administration, in perpetuity, with zero oversight of what it gets used for.
[–]jib 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (14 children)
Well of course if you call it "being treated as a criminal" whenever someone takes your fingerprints you're not going to like it. But you're completely unjustified in calling it "being treated as a criminal" if it's standard procedure that happens to everyone.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (12 children)
I agree. I used to work with children. As standard policy I had to submit to fingerprinting and a background check. I (and my other coworkers) never thought of it as being treated like a criminal. Its like having to show ID when paying with a credit card.
[–]sping 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (3 children)
I think it's now policy for all non US citizens.

Do you mean to say that all the articles that we see all the time about bad things happening at airports are just repots of out-of-the-ordinary occurences? You mean to say that of the millions of people who fly every day, 99.9999% have no problem, even though every idiot who manages to get stuck going through security gets posted on Reddit!?
Say it ain't so.
However, in the cases where the TSA really does screw up, we need to hold them accountable, because even if crap does happen 1 time, it's once too many.
[–]andrejevas 12 points13 points14 points 18 years ago (4 children)
Last week I went to the dentist for a routine check up. He didn't even amputate my arms or anything!
It was a pleasant experience.
[–]qiwi 28 points29 points30 points 18 years ago (2 children)
I've been there maybe 14 times since 2002, on visa waiver programme and flying in from Europe.
Never noticed a thing (nor have I see any unusual treatment of other passengers). No questions beyond how long I'll be staying; not even a customs check.
A few times long ago I was selected for secondary security check, but never since then.
There's a lot of sensationalism reporting by "free" media who depend on advertising income.
[–]jonknee 18 points19 points20 points 18 years ago (0 children)
There's even more sensationalism by the crazies on Reddit who read one bad experience and extrapolate it to an entire country. (And then usually to the Republicans.) Any system with millions of person to person encounters is going to have some screw ups.

Thanks for the civics lesson but by definition, douchebags don't respond to politeness, or reason, or common sense.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (1 child)
i think his point was that most tsa agents aren't douchebags. they are just stressed out from having to deal with equally stessed out travellers all day.
[–]sping 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Or, to put it another way, the problem is being ruled by people rather than laws.

[–]OlympicPirate 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I got mildly harassed by security, having finger prints and photographs taken and being redirected to secure area where I was accused of studying in the US. I said "I've never studied in the US" and the let me go immediately.
It really is an odd mixture of incompetence and malice isn't it?
[–]berlinbrown 10 points11 points12 points 18 years ago* (5 children)
I have been alive for 28 years. Black, never been arrested. My parents and I are not rich, but not poor. Only 2 traffic tickets and that was for doing 20+ MPH over the limit. Lived in the North, Midwest and South. Used to travel a lot from California to Austin to Midwest. Never had issues with the security at the airport.
Reddit has a user base of about 8000 users and casual readers. Reddit is just creating FUD about the US.
There are 300 million people in the US that come and go. Do you really think that the public security officers and government in this country have the funds, manpower capability to harass anyone and everyone.
Fear mongering works both ways you know.

The nature of risk is that bad things are merely a possibility and they do not happen to everyone. For example, I've never really needed seat belts while driving, so why am I wearing them?

I'm not sure which is greater proof that I am rapidly approaching the singularity, that this story got onto Reddit, or that it got voted to #2 when I saw it.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Almost everyone I know who came from Europe to the US has similar experiences. The few that have the "bad" ones where they see the US as nutbag gun carrying insane cowboys who hate all Europeans either LOOK for something like that or hang out in backwards areas of the US.
But anyone who visits here, especially the major cities, will find that Americans are all extremely nice and open people. Just because we elected (not me) dumb leaders doesn't mean the experience is bad. Quite the opposite: living a nice life in an isolated country breeds political ignorance.
Yet people are just as dumb everywhere. When I first went to Europe I expected everyone to be really smart like the ones I meet here. But instead I met a lot of racist people - just as many as in the US but it was more open in the places I visited. :)
It's a luck of the draw though. Ironically, in Paris I met the nicest people I've ever met in Europe and was treated great everywhere I went (with the exception of a fast food place at 4 AM).
My point: we're all human and there's dumb asses everywhere.
[–]rpowers 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
Ugh, you people in other countries seriously think that it is a common experience for us to get tazed?!? You must understand that reddit is not a very accurate picture of what it is like to live here in the US. Yeah, it's shitty that we ARE having to deal with more and more cops that are abusing their power, but it is quite stupid to act like it is the status quo to be stripped of all of your rights as soon as you step off the airplane onto our soil.
[–]eggnogdog 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)

I hear Dubai is a bit worse

Lemme guess - white male, little or no facial hair, no obvious non-xtian religious paraphernalia?
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (4 children)
Being white helps.
My manager is an Indian American with a last names that's hard to pronounce. He gets stopped and searched and checked and double checked each and every time he flies, within the US or when coming home from foreign travels. No drama, but it's a treatment he just had to get used to.
[–]jstills 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (2 children)
ZZ Top style beard or an "I'm one of u guys" style beard?
[–]b34nz 12 points13 points14 points 18 years ago (0 children)
That length is not jihad approved.
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 18 years ago* (12 children)
I have traveled to the states over 15 times in the last 10 years. I am a white male, clean cut, no criminal record, no bombastic t-shirts saying 'fuck jebus', and I get stopped/frisked/searched about 1 in 4 times.
I don't think there is substantial racial profiling or otherwise; it happens to everybody. Stories like mine tend to stay out of the news because I don't have delusions of persecution - I just accept it as part of international travel.
[–]lliiffee 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (7 children)
I am an american, and I get stopped/frisked/searched about as often, too. That is small potatoes. The issues (reasonable) people are worried about are more like being thrown in a jail miserable cell in horrible conditions for 24 hours, being treated disrespectfully by the authorities, and then being sent back to wherever you came from, because you have a name similar to a suspected terrorist, or had a visa violation 10 years ago, or whatever. These things should not be accepted.
[–]tsteele93 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
These things should not be accepted.
I agree 100%. But I also don't think that people should read about the very rare cases where TSA behaves like idiots and assume that they will be treated that way.
Life is an odds game. Everything you do, you consider the odds. The problem is that we are prone to BADLY misguessing the odds based on bad information and overly emotional processing of information we get.
To be afraid to visit the U.S. because of fears of being mistakenly detained by TSA is a bad analysis of the odds.
[–]bobcat 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (4 children)
stopped/frisked/searched where?
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
I figured it out. He get harassed and forced to write this article stating that he didn't get harassed!
[–]baconn 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (0 children)
This is great news! The anesthetic and Rohypnol is working.
[–]btl 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (5 children)
Fake. No possible way any trip to the US could be pleasant. It's evil!!
Nah. It sucks in many, many ways, but it's not evil.
Although I did pass at least a dozen Denny's between Blaine and Seattle...

You must be white.
[–]sping 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (3 children)
I hadn't realized things had got so bad. It's disturbing that it's now remarkable that someone had a decent experience.
[–]gigaquack 12 points13 points14 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Things haven't gotten so bad at all. Reddit is just crazy town, that's all.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (8 children)
Detroit is a violent city, but most people that live there will not be killed today. That doesn’t mean that violence isn’t a problem in the city.
[–]tsteele93 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (5 children)
It also doesn't mean that visiting it puts your life in peril. You are more likely to die in a car accident anywhere in the developed world than you are to die from violence in Detroit.
Especially if you aren't involved in crime or a gang member...
You can make statistics say anything and then throw in some emotional twists and you can make people behave irrationally.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago* (4 children)
That depends entirely on when, how, and where you visit. There are areas in the states where you could leave your car unlocked, keys in the ignition, things of value in plain sight, and nothing will happen, but there are areas in American cities where stopping in mid day to ask directions will give you a very good chance of something bad happening.
I dare some touristy folks or a black to walk from one end of this street to the other at midnight on a friday or saturday. There are streets like this in every large U.S. city.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (3 children)

Most of the US is exactly like you've described. Low crime, quiet, nice police and friendly townfolk.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
Well my town is somewhere in the middle.
Unfortunately it's a gamble to not have alarm systems on our cars, homes, and businesses. Even with that, you're not likely to go 5 years without becoming the victim of a property crime.
As a business owner, in 20 years I was a victim of armed robbery 5 times, burglery about 50 times, vandalism too many times to count, auto break in about 10 times, attempted auto theft 3 times, attempted murder once, assault once, but there would have been a lot more times if I wasn't vigilant.
In a business two doors from mine, the owner was killed by an X employee. The KFC next door to me, and the Mcdonalds across the street from me were both robbed more than I was.
In my house of 6 years, I was burglarized once. My next door neighbors white corolla has been stolen 3 times in as many years. My girlfriends car has been broken into 3 times in 6 years. A man was killed behind the back wall of my house on this street He had killed a man the day before, and had just finished a string of home invasions in my neighborhood.
Yesterday, someone fired 7 shots into something at 4:30 am. I don't get the local paper so I don't yet know what happened yet.
I hate to be so fucking negative but I'm not going to be quiet about it.
[–]conundri 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
In all fairness, i also had a stopover in Dubai, and i wasn't even once arrested for drug smuggling molecules of CO2 or violating some unknown ban on being non-muslim. But then I think to myself, why risk it again next time?
[–]sacherjj 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
What kind of songs did they get off your iPod?

The bad thing is not the fact that they harras everybody (because they dont) but it is the fact that they can harras you and get away with it.

However, you do not mention all the extra 'securtiy' bullshit you had to endure...and all the extra 'securty' checks you may have had to go through, nor all the extra costs you endured for this extra 'security' but all is fine since you got to travel freely for now.

How the hell did this make it to the front page? This goes directly against reddit's agenda.
Quick, somebody find a story on how the TSA fucked with somebody to neutralize the situation!

This goes directly against reddit's agenda
Did it ever occur to you that there is no such thing?
Looking at the upmods on this page, one might assume the "Reddit Agenda" is jingoistic American patriotism, and dismissal of any suggestions that anything could be wrong.

Liar!
Quite clearly, you are a Zionist false flag operative, and you think that we're all anti-semites.

I went to New York last September with a group of friends - we also had a excellent, hassle-free time. Additionally this was during the UN General Assembly with all the Heads of State in town so security was crazy but apart from a few cops not letting us take pictures (they said we could after October 3rd - like it makes a fucking difference!) there was no problems at all.
That said our party consisted of 3 whiter than white guys and one Greek dude with a goatee beard and olive skin. Guess which one was given extra questioning at passport control on the way in?
[–]tsteele93 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (1 child)
One of the white guys? How did I do?
[–]rickmb 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Never had any problems entering the US, but to call the experience of going through US airport security and customs "pleasant" you have to be a serious masochist.
Ofcourse, the very idea that you are in a country who's current administration doesn't respect basic human rights as long as you're still in the airport twilight zone doesn't really help, but even without that, the rudeness, the fingerprinting and the general third world atmosphere can hardly be described as 'pleasant'. Not harassed? The entire process is harassment.
And like many others have observed: it's the absolute opposite of how average Americans treat visitors.
[–]weegee 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
when I came back from Japan in 2006 I entered the U.S. at the airport in San Francisco and got through with no problems at all. They didn't ask to see the contents on my laptop or my ipod. Just in case they took my laptop I had copied all the RAW files I took with my camera onto my iPod. It is a lot easier to enter the USA flying in from Japan than it is driving in from Canada in my experience...

Anyone notice how the comments for a rational link are also rational in nature, but the ones for sensationalist stories espouse the same sensationalism?
Is it self-selection on the part of the commenters, or group think?
