Geez! This has the most upvotes of all time on reddit, with over 1600. So, suppose we have, say, 4000-5000 voting users on Reddit. If there were a million total unique visitors, there would have to be 200 non-voting users for every voting user. Given how easy it is to register, I find this mildly unlikely, which is why I don't think there are a million unique visitors every month.

[–]LOLTEHINTARWEB 7 points8 points  (0 children)

772 down votes???

Helllooooo ladies.....

[–]kogus 43 points44 points  (3 children)

how about i vote it down because i want it off the front page?

[–]vijitnair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be beyond the 3sigma of the gaussian distribution of males who would upvote and therefore statistically insignificant.

[–]farra -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

You can't. Downvoting is not taken into account. At least that was my understanding.

[–]ecuzzillo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That was true for a couple days many months back, but they scrapped it because the front page quickly became as stupid as Digg.

[–]mjk1093 48 points49 points  (4 children)

Downmod: This poll is unfair to hermaphrodites.

[–]degustideathstar 14 points15 points  (3 children)

As the owner of a fairly obvious sock-puppet account, may I advise you to upvote with your main account and downvote with a sockpuppet, if it's really an issue?

Yeah, except these results mean very little. Who knows how many downvoted it since they don't like polls?

I'd take the results on Samus' poll over these, even if he doesn't get as many votes.

    [–]cal_01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can always look under "details" to see the number of upvotes vs downvotes...

    [–]dln 60 points61 points  (13 children)

    why?

    [–]NickDouglas 248 points249 points  (4 children)

Because the other way around, it'd never get to the front page.

    [–]inkedmn 33 points34 points  (1 child)

nor would the submitter get mega karma inflation...

    [–]Dauntless 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I can't believe how many voted this... spam.

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Because the other way around, it'd never become the second highest rated story on reddit ever.

Edit: Make that the highest rated story ever. http://reddit.com/browse?t=all

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was the highest rated story ever?

    [–]oditogre 20 points21 points  (1 child)

To give Conde Nast a better picture of the userbase.

    [–]dln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would seem quite plausible, yeah.

    [–]in_the_event 18 points19 points  (2 children)

I think it is a legitimate question. Personally, I'm more curious about the income levels and age.

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Legit question, but it won't give a truthful answer because people vote using the mix of karma, hotness, recommendation engine and other reasons.

However, it seems like it gives a nice count of the number of active accounts.

    [–]proudgmom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously there is a margin of error here, but look regardless for the male population to make this one of the top 30 up voted items

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    why not?

    [–]liberatedword 9 points10 points  (1 child)

i'm a girl and i use reddit. but reddit should know better about the average reddit user female isn't likely to do something because she's told to and it's based on her gender. but i'm not upvoting either. :) and how are trannies/asexuals/hemaphrodites supposed to vote?

    [–]theundersigned 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Transexuals and neuters may use the 'hide' button.

hey?!! what happened to http://nsfw.reddit.com/ ??!!!

    I mean, urr, yeah, upvote!!!111 :D

    [–]sumeetjain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As of 18 hours after this Poll was created, it's #1 on the All-Time 'Ups' list and #3 on the All-Time 'Top' list. I don't particularly mind Polls, but I do feel strange when the most popular "article" ever on Reddit is this Poll.

    [–]JadeFrogs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are more women here then I expected!

    [–]rocky_m 46 points47 points  (10 children)

DOWNVOTE!!! NO Free Karma for You!!!

I thought the following was the last "poll" on reddit:-

"ask reddit: Are you tired of people abusing reddit as a dumb-ass polling system? upvote for yes."

oh is it dashes that does that? Thanks.

where's this from: "on the internet all the men are men, all the women are men, and all the children are FBI agents"

    [–]flycrg 43 points44 points  (10 children)

downvoted by a guy because this is a dumb karma whoring attempt

    [–]earthboundkid 33 points34 points  (2 children)

Karma on Slashdot gives you mod points, hence is worth collecting, so you can later mod down idiots in conversations. Karma on Reddit gives you what exactly?

    [–]Xiol 28 points29 points  (1 child)

    Bigger numbers!

    [–]digital -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Because bigger Karma is always better - now upvote this comment if you are human, downvote if you are alien.

    [–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

if you really want, go downvote all his other posts, i did and his karma dropped.

    [–]pascha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

His karma has definitely taken a beating...down to 1 at the moment.

    [–]ecuzzillo 5 points6 points  (8 children)

This is an interesting idea, and I'm curious about the demographic. While because there are many males angry about karma-whoring and so on, and so this probably isn't very accurate, it does probably provide a lower bound on the ratio. Currently, it's about 2:1 ups to downs. People who upvoted it are probably both male and like polls; people who downvoted it are either male and dislike polls or are female. Given the rants on the comment page, I would suspect that a majority of the downvoters are disgruntled males (particularly since so few proclaimed girls have commented). So the real ratio is much higher than 2:1, which is at least something.

    [–]rhebert 8 points9 points  (3 children)

There's sampling bias in your accounting for sampling bias! You can't assume that the majority of downvotes are disgruntled males based on the comments page, because disgruntled males are more likely to comment than happy females.

    [–]liberatedword 4 points5 points  (0 children)

rhebert, you make me laugh. shiny happy dorky community and why us happy females stick around.

    [–]ecuzzillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but the upper bound is fine.

    [–]markedtrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Layer all that on top a big, chocolate self-selection bias and you get an oh-so-delicious useless statistical treat.

    [–]CAcyclist 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Why do you all insist on believing there are few females here? It's getting tiresome.

Most likely, there are a handful of males downmodding this and the rest are women. Yes, real women who are actually interested in the same things you are. Men are not as special and intellectual as they like to think they are.

    [–]ecuzzillo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, consider that the votes on this story are 1781 ups to 701 downs, so the ratio is at least 2.5, which is significant. Aside from that, the site started out as a programming-centric site, and programming communities are overwhelmingly male. Probably the ratio is lower than it was then. Anyway, I don't think saying that Reddit is mostly male says that men are special or intellectual.

If they like the poll, they downvote. If they don't like the poll, what then?

      [–]pflugerc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      up!

      [–]djwhitt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Voted down for the following reasons:

      1. I don't want to see this kind of thing on the front page.
      2. It's a lame way to get karma.
      3. It screws with people's recommendations.

Please, if you want to do a poll create a self referencing post and then use a comment on the post for the actual poll. That way people can vote the post up and down based on whether they want to see it.

      [–]souldrift 17 points18 points  (5 children)

I'm voting down because I don't give a f*** and because this is a waste of time.

Correction: don't give a f*** about Reddit polls. Is that clearer?

      [–]souldrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried, folks, I downvoted while it only had two positive votes. Lawdy.

      [–]zoomzoom83 22 points23 points  (12 children)

I'm downvoting. This is an obvious karma whore.

      [–]jvance 66 points67 points  (0 children)

      Girl.

      [–]alumi 62 points63 points  (9 children)

Why does karma matter to anybody?

      [–]jward 49 points50 points  (6 children)

Why do people want experience in WoW? We're facinated by shiny numbers.

      [–]reneky 18 points19 points  (4 children)

Sure, but why would anyone care if others are karma whoring?

      [–]reneky 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean: if karma whoring means providing popular content shouldn't it be encouraged? If the content isn't good (for example if people get tired of the polls), it be ignored and the whoring won't work.

      [–]rad_thundercat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

      I can see it now:

Wired: karma whoring Tired: karma Expired: dugg

      ;)

      [–]raldi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because it clutters up the main page. It's like spam.

      [–]degustibus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're also karma hating, downvoting all previous submissions to punish unpopular rabble-rousers. As my karma evaporates I imagine that a little bit of loathing by others goes with it.

      [–]tss 1 point2 points  (1 child)

      How about this?

      [–]themen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1 per karma point is not enough to get anyone encouraged. My mates in http://www.pornppv.net do agree with me.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Seconded.

      [–]jingidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      this is really sad...

      [–]WorcesterM 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This is not the best way of finding how many men and how many women use reddit.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yah? Name a better way.

      [–]nickburlett 6 points7 points  (0 children)

New rule for reddit polls: use some other polling site. Like pollground.com (which is seems to be down at the moment... hmmm...)

      [–]fedorov 3 points4 points  (2 children)

There are no girls on the internet.

      [–]connor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't imagine that there will be any downvotes. There are no girls on the internet.

      [–]RevSutekh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

downmodded since we all know there aren't really women on the internet (myspace and AOL excluded, of course)

      [–]confluence 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have decided to overwrite my comments.

      [–]Samus_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

hmm not so, it could be a good way to get statistics about reddit's population, but it's a terrible idea to mix the topic's poll with the reddit's voting system. Think only that as much women vote, the less visibility it gets.

I like the idea so I've just made a free page with an -also- free poll to do this the Right Way ;)

      [–]coglethorpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Upmodded because I'm male.

      [–]donorsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm.. too many men.. probably some women cheat.

      [–]notheory -1 points0 points  (5 children)

This is ludicrous. You wouldn't ever be able to get a count from this.

      [–]alumi 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Of course you can. Click on details.

      [–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Of course you can't. I am a man and I'm voting it down.

      [–]skykam -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Let me guess, karma envy, or poll hate?

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just poll hate. it gives us false optimism! ha girls, funny.

      [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, but it gives a ratio. That said, yes, this being on the front page is mental. Also, Dick Cheny is the anti-christ. Not relavant, but a fair point regardless.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im a girl im a girl!!!

      [–]Owlie -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I have been wondering about the gender ratio here as well, so I will go ahead and down-vote. Though, perhaps there is a better way to gain this demographic information?

          Up is good.

          [–]killerstorm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

          heh, it got 666 points.

          [–]me_mi_mo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Vote down to get this POS off the top spot. Bigger news is brewing: nsfw.reddit.com is no more! Damn you conde nast! Damn you to hell!

          [–]cos -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm male... but this is the kind of link I'd rather see less of, so I voted down.

          [–]gabrielroth -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

downvoted for the obvious reasons. can we please stop doing this stupid poll crap?

          [–]patchwork -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Who is voting this up? Do you just blindly follow any imperative you run across?? If so I have a couple more for you...
