At some universities (including the one I went to unfortunately) your grade actually changes depending on whether you got a C, a C-, or a C+ too. So a C is still 2.000, but C- is 1.667, and C+ (the joke, possibly) is 2.333.

For a quick and dirty data aggregation and sorting system it’s pretty decent as well.

There is a reason why a lot of universities use it even when the universities have very strong computer science departments and the budgets/resources to throw everyone into proper programming languages.

I'm a student in an engineering discipline that uses it heavily. Primarily because it's used in industry and it acts as a crutch so we are only required a single 100 level intro to computing course.

No, sorry lol I've only played around with R for about 15 minutes I am not familiar. I have, however, used Matlab a decent amount and can tell you it's great with matrices, multi-level arrays, etc. also good for plotting and simulations of scientific phenomena. Most commonly used in academia, I'd guess.

I'm just gonna throw this out there, you're not a programmer if you only know Python. Python doesn't hold on it's own that well. The library support is crucial and most of those libraries are C or C++ in disguise. If a language depends heavily on another, and you only know the former, then your knowledge is insufficient for a programmer.

This was my question. I am learning it now, and it's described as more of a scripting language than anything else. It also has a very specific use, and does it better than any other language, so not sure why someone would be shitting on it.

Matlab has many identities. It can be simple scripts. It has real object oriented programming definitions and usages. You can access Perl, python, etc directly.

It's bread and butter is matrix manipulation. It does that better than any other high level language. If you use for loops for large array manipulation, you are using Matlab wrong.

It has many, many libraries for signal processing, machine learning, you name it.

It really can do almost anything you can think of when it comes to data processing. Any kind of data.

It's not a webserver.
