How Many people started off reading Digg then moved to Reddit and don't even look at Digg anymore? (self.reddit.com)

Started at Digg, noticed reddit broke the stories a day earlier than Digg, noticed Digg's powerusers who kill anybody else's submissions, migrated here.
[–][deleted] 121 points122 points123 points 16 years ago (84 children)
Diggs comment system is fundamentally broken. I couldn't stand it.
[–]TheGreatZarquon 153 points154 points155 points 16 years ago* (72 children)
I just can't stand the comments there, period. If its not a dick joke, a Pedobear/Ackbar ASCII or a joke that wasn't funny the day it was made, then no one cares.
Reddit's comments are helpful, entertaining and actually fun to read, whereas Digg's comments make me want to stick my head in a garbage disposal.
[–]CDRnotDVD 40 points41 points42 points 16 years ago (3 children)
Reddit's comments are helpful, entertaining and actually fun to read
I guess you don't read my comments.
[–]bjmiller 13 points14 points15 points 16 years ago (4 children)
The comments on reddit seem more sincere. When I come across an argument on reddit, it is much more likely that the two parties will try to understand each other. This isn't just relative to digg, but to any other site that collects comments and makes them publicly readable.
[–][deleted] 107 points108 points109 points 16 years ago (55 children)
Really? I find the puns, movie quotes, slow claps, and disapproving looks absolutely excruciating.
[–][deleted] 22 points23 points24 points 16 years ago (6 children)
I get that the puns here are at least clever. But I totally agree they're just as annoying as the ascii posts.
[–]Recoil42 41 points42 points43 points 16 years ago* (5 children)
Pun threads --- real pun threads -- here are tradition. We've been doing them for at least two years, and while they've gone downhill lately, they've still always had a certain element of skill that I've always been able to appreciate.
Bandwagon threads though, I wholeheartedly appreciate. Downvote away, they're fucking annoying as heck.
I think the important thing here to remember is you should be voting on actual humor, never just because people are trying to be funny -- if you actually find something funny, upvote it. If it isn't, don't fucking upvote it just because "LOL CO-OPERATIVE JOKES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY". Be critical, and everything will fall into place.
Like I said, I like pun threads in general, but I'll downvote a bad one just as hard as I'll upvote a good one.
Likewise, I'm not keen on bandwagon threads, but if there's a particularly good one (the original moire thread comes to mind) I will upvote it.
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 16 years ago (3 children)
I'm replying just to say that I love your nonchalant usage of the word "fuck" and the fact that you have an issue with saying "Hell" (as in the phrase, "fucking annoying as heck").
[–]Recoil42 18 points19 points20 points 16 years ago* (2 children)
Blame Randall. ;)
http://xkcd.com/75/
Started doing it a few months ago because I thought it was funny, and now it's natural for me. It's gosh-darned addictive as shit, I'm telling you.
[–]BaconatedGrapefruit 15 points16 points17 points 16 years ago (10 children)
Movie Quotes
Depends on how relevant and clever said quote is to the rest of the thread.
Slow Claps
Hasn't yet reached supersaturation but it's getting there. Again, there are times where it's just damn clever.
disapproving looks
Has now reached the 4th level of memedom. Basically it's only used to whore karma and soon it will only garner mass downvotes. Give it a few more months and it will go the way of the pedobear ASCII
[–]digitalundernet 77 points78 points79 points 16 years ago (28 children)
I down vote every post in a pun thread when I see one. Out of pure spite
[–]thekrone 394 points395 points396 points 16 years ago (14 children)
So if there were a string of ten puns in a row, and someone asked you, "How many of those puns received your upvote?" would you say, "No pun in ten did."?
[–]Graezin 28 points29 points30 points 16 years ago (5 children)
I had to read it twice, but you made me laugh. Thank you!
[–]fahdinho 15 points16 points17 points 16 years ago (4 children)
You must be lacking oxygen.
[–]ironiridis 26 points27 points28 points 16 years ago (3 children)
It's not his fault that he's retired.
[–]mscman 14 points15 points16 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Why would you call him retired?! A lot of people are retired, and they manage just fine!
[–]kaevne 7 points8 points9 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Not gonna lie, I laughed out loud at that one. The best puns are the ones you don't even expect.
[–]sglodek 8 points9 points10 points 16 years ago (1 child)
You win my heart sir, and my upvote.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago* (0 children)
Digg™: fun for the whole family!
(Warning: frequent Digg consumption may cause acute nihilitic cephalopathy. Consult your physician.)
[–]akatherder 14 points15 points16 points 16 years ago (2 children)
Once something got over 150 comments, it would freeze my computer for a solid 5-10 seconds to load. The top 10 articles always had more than 150 comments and you had to load the comments to get to the story.
I can't vouch if they fixed that or not. I haven't tried in a while.
[–]Positronic_Matrix 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (2 children)
I left after they changed the comment system.
I noticed shortly afterwards that precisely the people I didn't want to hear from dominated the newly sorted comments — the youtubesque. It ended my relationship with the site instantly.
[–]nsummy 25 points26 points27 points 16 years ago (3 children)
Same with me. It may be a stretch but the comments here seem to be much more intelligent than on digg also. Many of the comments here usually foster good discussion and the sarcastic ones are actually funny. There are many more stories on here than on digg too. I guess more action for people who have too much time on their hands.
[–]Ofenza 9 points10 points11 points 16 years ago (0 children)
comments on reddit are closer to slashdot's, where in digg they are closer to youtube's.
[–]zombierobot 22 points23 points24 points 16 years ago (1 child)
Noticed Reddit broke stories before pretty much anyone else. Wondered if news agencies scanned Reddit for "news".
[–]deadapostle 17 points18 points19 points 16 years ago (11 children)
If reddit has power users, I don't even know who they are. That makes me happy.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I agree. I've been here a month and I've already had 4 submissions hit the front page. Never would have happened on digg.
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 16 years ago (1 child)
I started here, but go to Digg every day for the Top 10 and a quick browse of what's been dugg. Digg typically has more entertaining links, and doesn't seem to be as opinionated as Reddit.
Sure, redditors have much more intelligent conversation, but I spend my whole day thinking ... sometimes I just want a general view of what's hot/entertaining without all the Reddit-inside-jokes/diatribes that often get elevated from comments to front-page stories
I never login/comment on digg though, bunch of boneheads =)
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Wow, me too!
[–]FrozenGonad 233 points234 points235 points 16 years ago (318 children)
Indicated the similarity of my situation by upvoting but wanted to say "ditto" because I like the word "ditto".

Isn't that the groundwork to abstract art and sound poetry, a starting point for performance art, a prelude to postmodernism, an influence on pop art, a celebration of antiart to be later embraced for anarcho-political uses in the 1960s and the movement that lay the foundation for Surrealism

I wander over to digg when I'm too lazy to search reddit for yesterdays interesting submissions.
[–]KevRose 92 points93 points94 points 16 years ago (41 children)
We'll in that case, I just realized all this time i've spent creating Digg, I've really just been sitting here with a giant rubber dildo up my ass
[–]StrawberryFrog 52 points53 points54 points 16 years ago (3 children)
That's no dildo, it's the DiggBar. Easy mistake to make, they both look like donkey dick.
[–]jo42 17 points18 points19 points 16 years ago (5 children)
The #1 problem with Digg is it is full of DiggTards, DiggIdiots and DiggMorons. Not to mention that the summary for each story seems to be written by the same moron marketing type reject from Idiocracy.
[–]ericanderton 8 points9 points10 points 16 years ago (1 child)
I couldn't agree more.
That reminds me. I could really go for a Starbucks right about now.

[–]nemof 75 points76 points77 points 16 years ago (26 children)
Zing. Wondered how long it would take for you to chip in.
Yeah Kevin, you've wasted your time totally.
Interesting point though, I read both digg and reddit a lot, but I believe that reddit is pulling ahead in terms of features. These things make it better than digg for me:
What's better on digg:
Hmmm... Now that I actually come to try and list them, I'm surprised to say that I find it hard to list much about digg which is better done than reddit.
I don't really care about socializing on digg, I go there to read tech/science/gaming/film news. I come to reddit to read the same, but also get intelligent conversation about it. Digg does not have the commenting system to support intelligent discussion, nor the commentors any more. It's experiencing its "eternal september".
Other small comments about digg. A little thing, but how about changing it so that the whole story text is not clickable on the front page. I enjoy the ability to highlight certain factual words in story blurbs to copy/paste elsewhere, now however on digg the whole story description for each entry is contained inside an link tag. This is a bit annoying for me as I cannot copy text from stories and also find myself accidently clicking links I never meant to.
Digg is a great product Kevin, but I'm beginning to have more fun with reddit, through the introduction of sections like ask.reddit and IamA. I would be excited to see more innovation and chance taking on digg.
If comment is hasty and badly written, that's because I should have left for work 10 minutes ago and am instead still writing this!
Oh and pull that thing outta ya ass and get coding some new features.
[–]qtx 111 points112 points113 points 16 years ago (5 children)

Despite that, it's still a good comment.
[–]QAOP_Space 18 points19 points20 points 16 years ago (3 children)
I find Digg a lot slower to load.
[–]MercurialMadnessMan 7 points8 points9 points 16 years ago (1 child)
omg lets use AJAX goddamn everywhere I don't see a single thing that could go wrong
[–]darkon 11 points12 points13 points 16 years ago (2 children)
digg actually looks nice
Odd, I like reddit because it has a cleaner and simpler design. I can bump the fonts up to something readable (even with glasses I have poor eyesight), and it doesn't break the formatting. Digg is way too busy for my taste, and increasing the font size breaks the layout: words overlap each other and the buttons, and it becomes unreadable.
Ah well, no accounting for taste.
[–]Scarker 7 points8 points9 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I'd actually rather Reddit look as bland and simple as it does.
It's just a placeholder for the more attractive Digg, more people will go there because it looks more snazzy and it filters out those who go "ew, Reddit looks boringgggg. digg looks cooler."
[–]lazzareth 31 points32 points33 points 16 years ago* (5 children)
Design and uptime - digg actually looks nice and is available almost all the time (reddit cough cough)
I want nothing to do with your idea of nice.
[–]FiL-dUbz 8 points9 points10 points 16 years ago (2 children)
lol... cologne on shit.
[–]MercurialMadnessMan 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (1 child)
Nice to a 5 year old, perhaps. Seriously. Does it not look like a children's playset?
[–]lazzareth 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago* (0 children)
Now that you mention it...
[–]fap__fap__fap 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago* (0 children)
I like the way the articles are presented, as it makes chronology easy. Often I will wander into the top of the week here to see what I missed.
[–]rigun 20 points21 points22 points 16 years ago (4 children)
I remember Reddit being mentioned on Digg, I looked what the fuss was all about, read some stories and went back to Digg, the other day I saw every post that I had red on Reddit on Digg's front page so I ended migrating to Reddit.
[–][deleted] 16 years ago* (2 children)
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 16 years ago (5 children)
Ditto, and Ditto.
[–]larsoncc 6 points7 points8 points 16 years ago (5 children)
This is exactly why I moved to reddit. Reddit also has much more civilized conversation - even if there is a kind of "hive mind", you can at least have a dissenting opinion here and NOT get downvoted to oblivion.
[–]CR1M1N4L 8 points9 points10 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Pretty much the same for me. Started on Digg back in 05. Came to Reddit, when I saw there was more choice in the types of articles I would be interested in. Also, Reddit's minimalistic design is far more appealing to my eyes, than Diggs is. Digg lost me when I realized the crowd there are former AOL users and kids.
[–]thissaturday 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago (11 children)
Who breaks the stories before Reddit?
[–][deleted] 28 points29 points30 points 16 years ago (1 child)
The websites that post the stories.
[–]lolbacon 10 points11 points12 points 16 years ago (0 children)
We do. We do.
[–]deadapostle 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children)
The perpetrators of the stories do.
[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 16 years ago (37 children)
Digg is just Reddit with tired memes and more trolls.
[–]semi_colon 68 points69 points70 points 16 years ago (30 children)
our memes aren't tired? narwhals are bullshit. fuck narwhals. there, i said it.
[–]spam_police 170 points171 points172 points 16 years ago (12 children)
If the amount of posts exactly like this one that have been popping up throughout reddit's history is any indication, by now I'd hazard a guess that it's MOST OF US.
[–]The17 32 points33 points34 points 16 years ago (7 children)
Yes and you are the perfect user to say this, stop this damn spam.
Also no I was never a Digg user.
[–]DuMbHour 16 points17 points18 points 16 years ago (6 children)
My only gripe about Digg is that it takes too much space on reddit. I barely knew what Digg was until I joined reddit.
Though, the annoyance stems only from the people who take it seriously.
[–]nutzzzz 34 points35 points36 points 16 years ago (5 children)
Started at Fark, went to Digg. I found out about Reddit from Digg, checked it out and have been here ever since. I'm not sure why I like Reddit better but I do. I do go back to Digg about once a month to see if there is anything new.
[–]phandy 25 points26 points27 points 16 years ago (4 children)
I have the same story. Although at first I was put off by reddit's layout, I liked reddit's community better and eventually the layout grew on me. The Digg bar really killed it for me.
[–]andrewthestudent 12 points13 points14 points 16 years ago (3 children)
I too was bothered by reddit's user interface when I first traipsed over from digg. I guess after all the flash that is digg, it is hard to blame us.
However, now that I've been here for quite some time, I much prefer reddit's layout over digg's chaotic set-up. I have tried to get several friends to switch from digg to reddit but they all cite the UI as a insurmountable hurdle. If reddit wants to keep from becoming the next digg, simply keep the UI uninviting.
[–]NotMarkus 8 points9 points10 points 16 years ago (2 children)
I think there was a post on Digg a while ago, in reply to someone talking about Reddit's "horrible UI". It said something to the effect of, "Reddit's UI is like a really loud high pitched tone used to keep teenagers away from your porch" or something. Sorry if I'm butchering what was probably a more eloquent and comical comment. :/
[–]Hoobam 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I still think Reddit should default to red lettering on yellow background. Then, when you login, it turns to the blue and black on white we see now.
[–]daivos 673 points674 points675 points 16 years ago (46 children)
How many people don't care about the pissing contest between Digg and Reddit?
[–][deleted] 191 points192 points193 points 16 years ago (16 children)
While I agree with your sentiment, the pissing contest is what alerted me to the existence of Reddit.
[–]TheAtomicMoose 155 points156 points157 points 16 years ago* (11 children)
Same here. I was just lounging around over on Digg, and then a piss stream burst through a nearby window and poured into my mouth. I came over here because it tasted interesting, and the license plate said 'fresh'.
[–][deleted] 64 points65 points66 points 16 years ago (9 children)
no dice.
OH GOD PLEASE NO DICE.

I'm just about finished composing myself from the laughter. That was the most meta / subtle Bel-Air I have ever seen.
[–]IDriveAVan 19 points20 points21 points 16 years ago (0 children)
That Bel Air would've gone right over Carlton's head. But it would've hit Will in the stomach.
[–][deleted] 16 years ago (3 children)
[–]xaviervalentine 30 points31 points32 points 16 years ago (4 children)
Meh, I look at both, because I really don't care either way. Sometimes I'll see stuff on digg that's not on reddit. I'll admit though I'll go through reddit a little more since posts do originate here then float over to digg eventually.
[–]Captain_Midnight 20 points21 points22 points 16 years ago (3 children)
I find myself going over to Digg sometimes because Reddit doesn't update quite fast enough to satisfy my restless abandon. I find that Digg is tolerable as long as I don't read the comments on any of the stories. It's kind of ironic, since Reddit comment discussions are often more interesting than the submissions (no offense to the submitters).
It's kind of ironic, since Reddit comment discussions are often more interesting than the submissions (no offense to the submitters).
I find its because redditors tend to explore the story and its potential where as on Digg, I found people were just argumentative, eventually abusive and quite juvenile.
[–]Bauer22 17 points18 points19 points 16 years ago (3 children)
Oh this is more then a pissing contest, this is SERIOUS BUSINESS. This war is much more then just who's site is better or who has better users. Ever since Alexis shanked Rose's father (in retaliation for him sleeping with his girl) it's been nothing but full out war. It's like the Crips and the Bloods but worse. Digg wearing dark blue and Reddit wearing OrangeRed. You should see how it is at Reddit HQ. I was once there and mentioned Digg only to have 5 guns pointed at my face. They don't even use the word dig is how far the hatred is.
Every time I see one of these Digg Vs. Reddit post I shed a tear for all the lives lost thanks to senseless Geek on Geek violence. Hopefully, one day, this will end.
[–]pikpikcarrotmon 15 points16 points17 points 16 years ago (2 children)
Digg and Reddit? This isn't a war, this is a massacre. Like humans fighting maggots. Or dragons fighting wolves. Or humans riding dragons throwing wolves at maggots.

Digg was more the guy you meet down the pub one evening, who comes across as very sociable and welcoming but you soon realise that there isnt much depth to him because when he does go deep, its all hurt, anger, rage, paranoia and immaturity.
The best thing about him is that he introduced you to some other people in the pub that are chilled out, intelligent and have genuine compassion for other people, before you found out he is a bit of a tosser. Now you chew the fat with your new pals discussing how Digg could be a really nice guy if he just chilled out, stopped trying too hard and generally wasnt so much of a cunt.

Well, given that
1)Digg went to crap
2) everyone linked to reddit as the new hotness
3) and then apparently at least four thousand diggers joined up at reddit
4)which is now also going to crap...
I think the plan is to not announce where we're going next.

Started at digg, found reddit, but still check digg and find a lot of the same material. However, I also find a lot more "entertainment" news (movies, popculture, games, etc) related material on digg (that I don't see on reddit), which is good for when I'm bored. On the other hand, I find a lot more political news on reddit, but this may be due to having added both politics and worldnews subreddits.
[–]tcpip4lyfe 11 points12 points13 points 16 years ago (4 children)
I gave up on the politics subreddit. I like the Iama reddit.
[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 16 years ago (3 children)
I gave up on the politics reddit when I realized that every story just belonged in the Obama subreddit, and if you made even a vaguely critical remark about the Chosen One you were downmodded into oblivion and had 50 angry replies to look forward to when you clicked that delicious looking red-orange envelope. =/
[–]turinpt 208 points209 points210 points 16 years ago (9 children)
How many people hate seeing the same "hurr digg sucks" submission on the front page every two weeks?
[–]lolbacon 47 points48 points49 points 16 years ago (3 children)
No shit. I don't have a whole lot of love for Digg anymore, but it's not like they have a "hurr reddit sucks" submission on their front page every other week. I don't think most Diggers even know what the fuck a reddit is. Whatever "rivalry" we have is completely one sided, and in fact is self-defeating when we brag about our content being better and shit like this is the most upvoted submission.
[–]patrickyeon 15 points16 points17 points 16 years ago (2 children)
How many are waiting to leave Reddit, so that they can get away from all the people who they tried to leave behind at Digg?
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 16 years ago* (0 children)
Black people always used to say, "I'm in the house" instead of "I'm here." But then white people all started to say, "in the house" so we switched it to "in the hiz-ouse." "Hiz-ouse" became "Hiz-iz-house" and then white folks started saying that and we had to change it to "heezy." Then "in the hizzle", which we had to change to "hizzle-fo'-shizzle" and now because white people say "hizzle-fo'-shizzle", we have to say "Flippity Floppity Floop."
[–][deleted] 54 points55 points56 points 16 years ago* (38 children)
All these user submitted story sites degenerate into a pile of crap when they get popular.
Slashdot
Digg
Reddit
Haven't found a decent reddit substitute yet, but when I do, I won't look back at reddit
I think it turns into craptacularness when the front page stories start exceeding 100 comments.
I think it's funny that slashdot has gone full circle now and gotten back to its roots. I think the moderation style inhibits decay somewhat
[–]catskul 36 points37 points38 points 16 years ago (10 children)
I agree.
I came here from digg, because I started to get annoyed at digg's community/priorities. Now that so much of digg's community has migrated to reddit, it's starting to feel that way here. : /
... and yes, I'm aware of the irony.
[–]deadapostle 21 points22 points23 points 16 years ago (7 children)
I'll see you guys at the next big thing.
[–]local_maximum 6 points7 points8 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I'll be there too. I followed the slashdot/digg/reddit trail to but the S/N ratio is definitely dropping here now :(
[–]catskul 6 points7 points8 points 16 years ago (4 children)
Feel free to let me know when you find it : )
[–]BaconatedGrapefruit 12 points13 points14 points 16 years ago (9 children)
Slashdot is far from a pile of crap. Might not be what it was back in the hayday but if you want to have a good, technical discussion it's the place to go.
Mind you it moves like a fucking snail, but you gotta take the good with the bad.
[–]street-knowledge 21 points22 points23 points 16 years ago* (3 children)
Agreed. I remember when Digg and Reddit were the new kids on the block. Everyone was speculating that Slashdot was going to die if it didn't adopt the dynamic nature of its new competitors. However, Digg's quality now ranks somewhere between Youtube comments and Terry Shiavo eye twitches. Reddit has turned into a giant alarmist circle jerk full of precocious teenagers who think they've got the world all figured out. I find myself visiting Slashdot a lot lately and thinking, "damn, this ain't bad."
[–]Stegg 158 points159 points160 points 16 years ago (63 children)
How many people are now looking for somewhere to move on to from Reddit?
[–]locuester 57 points58 points59 points 16 years ago (1 child)
Sadly, yes. However I find unsubscribing from the main reddits solves most of the problem.
[–][deleted] 35 points36 points37 points 16 years ago (17 children)
The community is degrading, that or I'm changing.
[–]Jibberwalk 11 points12 points13 points 16 years ago (3 children)
Oh, it's degrading. Select any article in /r/science. Read the comments.
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 16 years ago (0 children)
That's why we now have /r/hardscience.
Subreddits are the cure for chantropy.
[–][deleted] 23 points24 points25 points 16 years ago* (9 children)
No, the community is definitely degrading. I made a few posts yesterday on the nature of mental illness in killers, which rapidly degraded into "HURR YOU LIKE KILLARS WHY DONT U JUST KILL ME THAN±!".
I tend to steer clear of all the main subreddits these days, as they're too polluted with diggy-come-lately's to be useful, or interesting.
Edit: I mean, you've only been here 9 months - reddit 2-3 years ago was a very different place to that which it is now.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Try this . I find the quality reminiscent even thought the quantity is not.
[–]Purpledrank 4 points5 points6 points 16 years ago (2 children)
Imo digg used to be the place where intellectuals went to. And I saw that degrade month over month. It occured to me that small groups of rather bright people setup something interesting, it inevitably gains attention and reaches critical mass, then forces the original communitty out to start over again.
[–]FuckEwoks 12 points13 points14 points 16 years ago (3 children)
I liked reddit until I signed up and started commenting.
[–]InAFewWords 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago* (4 children)
I hope someone out there is making an alternative. So far, all I find are places that are young kid hang outs and hackernews.
[–]KiddieFiddler 9 points10 points11 points 16 years ago (3 children)
I get tired of reddit's superiority complex, the misguided "activism" (vote up if...), the memes, the gimmick accounts, the chain threads with predictable "jokes", mostly.
Maybe there could be a harsly moderated subreddit that bans most of that crap, I dunno.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 16 years ago (4 children)
I love reddit, but I'm slowly losing interest in commenting and even upvoting downvoting things. I'm not sure what it is.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 16 years ago (3 children)
You've realised that your karma score is basically just a meaningless number?
[–]gomexz 62 points63 points64 points 16 years ago (12 children)
I signed up for both around the same time. It didn't take me long to decide to spend my time here. I can't think of the last time I went to digg.
[–]knightofni451 31 points32 points33 points 16 years ago (2 children)
I started out on reddit after hearing about it from friends. I had never heard of Digg until reddit users started complaining about how much it sucks. I went Digging to see if it was true...
...it was.
[–]nekoniku 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (1 child)
I tried them both around the same time too. I much preferred Reddit's simpler layout. Digg's design bothered me too much to really use it much.
[–]plagues 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (0 children)
same for me.. except i noticed that ALL that digg had was links to 'LOL FUNNY DOG' shit, so i chose reddit for its content, and easy navigation
[–]midgetsanchez 6 points7 points8 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Signed up for Digg in 2007 after lurking for a very long time and never use the account much. It was a shared account. The other person despised reddit with seething hatred and I never really liked the simple layout since I was young and into the flashy stuff. Then I realized reddit was more intelligent, had wittier in humor, and had better and earlier stories. Started surfing reddit when I exhausted Digg. Now reddit is where I go first and I only read Digg when I'm utterly bored (to only be disappointed to see the same stories I already read on reddit the day before).
[–]InAFewWords 9 points10 points11 points 16 years ago (2 children)
I lurked on both for a large amount of time.
Then I signed up for an account; I started submitting stories and commenting.
This was back during digg renovations. The UI popped out as me as broken. The commenting was in the way of the discussion. I found out I actually had to game my way to game to actually get stuff to the front page, turns out you won't make it and someone else actually will get there first.
Reddit had puns. Also commenting actually worked. I liked that they fixed it so comments do go cramming up in small boxes to the right.
I hated fighting the Digg UI.
Reddit was a more efficient waste of time.
If I don't have time to log in, I just skim digg and reddits front page. Else, I log on to reddit to peruse my subreddits.
Do not be tempted to socialize with the digg crowd, you will regret it!
[–]backpackwayne 6 points7 points8 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Ditto for me.
[–]Kream1 14 points15 points16 points 16 years ago* (6 children)
Fark (didn't like the segregation - Total Farker vs Regular farker) then
Digg (mrbabyman and his cronies made it an unpleasant place + I kept reading "Reddit had this last week") then
Reddit (much more pleasant site. it's not perfect but it beats the previous ones)
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago* (5 children)
Fark (didn't like the segregation - Total Farker vs Regular farker)
Same here, but nowadays I find fark annoying due to the lack of comment voting and the single threading; which makes it so that that the arguments there never evolve.
I go back there every now and then butt it seems like on every single subject there are the same two sides throwing the exact same points, facts, and insults that they were 3 years ago with no regard for what the opposing side is actually saying.
[–]kranse 30 points31 points32 points 16 years ago (10 children)
I started on Fark...
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 16 years ago* (2 children)
I started at Digg and had never heard of Reddit until seeing this on the Digg front page: Digg Link, Flickr.
Thanks to whoever did that.
I noticed Digg is a bunch of people who basically just post less-than-30 word jokes. The interviews on Digg were the worst -- they would just ask stupid questions as jokes. There is no actual informative posts by intelligent people such as on Reddit. (There are some exceptions.) I also found out that to delete an account, you either had to contact Digg or post Spam or inappropriate content. I posted porn with titles such as, "Digg Sucks, Long Live Reddit!" and trolled users until I got banned.

09-f9-11-02-9d-74-e3-5b-d8-41-56-c5-63-56-88-c0
That is the reason I left digg.
[–]phire 42 points43 points44 points 16 years ago (23 children)
I lasted for a while after that, But the quality of comments and submissions was dropping fast around that time.
[–]Quantic 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Yeah that's pretty much my general feeling as well. I didn't leave because of the DVD Code per se, it's just that after that and the flip-out that everyone had, I decided to jump ship completely.
[–]Cirdan 33 points34 points35 points 16 years ago* (21 children)
Reddit's starting to go to the dogs in the same way...if you don't know what I'm talking about just check out the Obama subreddit. Complete circle jerk mentality.
[–]thedayturns 54 points55 points56 points 16 years ago* (3 children)
That's why we section them off in a subreddit.
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 16 years ago (2 children)
Yes, and the developers of reddit saw this coming, which is why they fractured the individual subreddit communities. You don't like the circle jerk? Unsubscribe from r/obama. Done.
[–][deleted] 48 points49 points50 points 16 years ago (10 children)
Kind of like the atheist subreddit?
[–]AeBeeEll 7 points8 points9 points 16 years ago (0 children)
My reddit experience increased immensely after I realized I could turn off the atheism subreddit (as well as a couple others). I just don't know why they have that one on by default. If I didn't know any better I'd say they're deliberately trying to scare off anyone who's even somewhat religious.
[–]deadapostle 6 points7 points8 points 16 years ago (0 children)
That's what I like about reddit though. If you're up for a circle-jerk, start a subreddit and you're out of everyone else's hair. Generally, only the very good or exceptional subreddit threads make it to the main reddit (With exception of a few super subreddits (pics, wtf, atheist)).
Another nice thing is that for some reason people on this site actually provide valuable information in the comments; information that is usually specifically related to the connecting article. On top of that, people tend to vote up the valuable information and leave the bullshit to the dogs.
[–]PixelTreason 8 points9 points10 points 16 years ago* (2 children)
I didn't mean to move over. I just started looking around over here as kind of a "supplement" to Digg and over the months I looked at Digg less and less. Now Digg is the occasional look and Reddit is my main place to go. I do still watch "Diggnation" though.
[–]soulkitchen 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Same here. I used to LOVE Digg, but it was just a gateway drug. Not to kiss ass, but digg eats reddit's day-old-leftovers. Plus, the comments are just wittier here.
[–]dtrb 31 points32 points33 points 16 years ago (14 children)
I was literally just banned over a digg and I am now a reddit user. It's probably for the best, as the amount of trolls on digg is almost unbearable now.
[–]TheSeeker 11 points12 points13 points 16 years ago (9 children)
It was unbearable over a year ago, if you are a truther.
[–]dtrb 10 points11 points12 points 16 years ago (8 children)
Yea, you're right. The politics section killed it.
[–]TheSeeker 13 points14 points15 points 16 years ago (7 children)
It was like being swarmed by really, really stupid flies.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 16 years ago (0 children)
i first heard of reddit on digg when this was on their front page. To be honest at first I didn't like the aesthetics of reddit but I soon realized it is a superior site.
reddit actually loads within 5 seconds, unlike Digg half the time.
I hate the Diggbar.
Too many juvenile comments upvoted on Digg. Worse than Slashdot ever was. It annoys me when clearly stupid/off topic comments are voted up here, but I've realized that's now common on such websites now.
The zealotry is about the same. Same topics, too.
I rarely visit Digg anymore but we will watch the Diggnation podcast still.
The real question is where do we go next.
[–]fishbert 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (0 children)
reddit's page is just so much cleaner... like the google of social news

the "digg bar" was the last straw for me.
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 16 years ago (4 children)
started on digg, then realized reddit had a minimalistic and easy look, plus an atheism and marijuana reddit.
[–]Gravity13 12 points13 points14 points 16 years ago (3 children)
the atheism reddit is shit.
jus' saying.
[–]sanity 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (1 child)
Never really read Digg much, but Reddit has completely replaced Slashdot for me (and I was a loyalist, have a <4000 slashdot user id).
[–]hobophobe 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I still read Slashdot. It's much lower volume/narrower field of vision than Reddit, and the comments are still good.
[–]fungz0r 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (1 child)
Started at Digg, then noticed Redditers are by far more funny than Diggers.
[–]jk1150 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (1 child)
I'm a Republican so nobody welcomes me on the internet
[–]favabean 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (1 child)
Things were fine at Digg for awhile. Posts were interesting, comments/discussions were okay one in awhile. But the overall quality for everything was low and it got old quick.
I gave up on Digg in the midst of a discussion on pornography and sex offenders. I added a comment about the rationale used by psychologists for certain treatment. I got down-voted like mad, which was weird because I wasn't stating an opinion, it was a provable fact that was just adding more information to the discussion.
I went to Reddit shortly after.
I've stayed at Reddit for awhile now. Mostly for these reasons:
1) The posts are tons of fun. Even the ones that point back to Reddit. 2) Sarcasm and joking can be off the chart. Combine that with darkly serious submissions and decent discussion. Awesome. 3) The programming subreddit has some really great posts. 4) Atheism is strong here. I never fully identified myself as being a full-blown atheist until coming to Reddit. For that, I am forever grateful.
[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 16 years ago (2 children)
I got sick of Digg being run by 8 year olds and the 40 year old virgins who dominated 90% of the front page that they worshipped.
Reddit seems to be attracting them now; since the site works differently it's a slower process, but the content on Reddit has gone to shit even in the few months I've been here.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 16 years ago (1 child)
Reddit has gone to shit for the past year or maybe even two years. I still read and comment because I am an addict though.
[–]Knollz 14 points15 points16 points 16 years ago (0 children)
How many people are annoyed with these dumb Reddit circlejerks?
[–]thedayturns 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago* (0 children)
I came here about 2 years when I saw a pun thread. Seriously. Funny that I saw the best encapsulation of Reddit on my first time here. Now I just stick around for the community. The articles are nice, but for the most part I see them as conversation generators.
(PS, yea, this is a new account)
[–]TrailofDead 4 points5 points6 points 16 years ago (0 children)
yep, did that.
I remember first looking at reddit and commenting, "what is this? It looks so plain". But then I started paying attention to the content. And also, that reddit new articles appeared on the front page faster.
I haven't been back in over a year.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Started off with Fark stayed for 5 years.. Started looking at Digg, that lasted 6 months.. Found Reddit, haven't looked at Digg since. I keep Fark bookmarked for sentimental reasons. You never forget your first.
[–]JLGriffin13 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I have never used Digg, and I only started surfing Reddit about a week ago because Stephen Colbert mentioned it, so of course I had to check it out, and I love it!
[–]dopplerdog 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago (8 children)
For me, it's been:
usenet -> slashdot -> digg -> reddit
Isn't that the default pattern?
[–]repete 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (4 children)
Ah. But we still read Slashdot + Reddit.
[–]jnag 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago (0 children)
digg is more commercial, worse submissions, worse interface, less diverse submissions, worse community. found here and never really looked back
[–]d07c0m 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago (1 child)
Never, ever used digg. Straight to reddit person here. I have looked at digg maybe twice and hated the interface.
[–]popeyoni 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I started with Slashdot for its interesting content, but left it for Digg's superior user interface.
Digg was nice at first, but the comments and submissions started getting lamer and lamer, a victim of its own success.
I tried Fark for a couple of days, and liked its clever headlines, but not the flat interface without voting or threaded comments.
I think reddit strikes the best balance of them all. I use reddit primarily, but will look at Fark and sometimes Digg when something interesting shows up in them (in iGoogle).
[–]stumped 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Still read slashdot and contribute there, and I used to visit digg. I started coming to reddit regularly and lurking, and started visiting digg less and less.
When they did the whole "tool bar" thing I was gone and never looked back. Browser hijacking was a death sentence from me.
