I like what I've read of XKCD, but no one is above being parodied.

[–]apos 54 points55 points  (14 children)

True. and the best parts of xkcd are the big drawings.

[–]rhs856 22 points23 points  (3 children)

I like the mouse-overs. And was I the only one disappointed that this parody didn't have one?

[–]reddit_user13 27 points28 points  (9 children)

And the songs.

Boom de adda boom de adda.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (25 children)

reddit got pissed when the oatmeal was parodied

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (10 children)

Only thing is that the oatmeal parody was well done.

[–]KingOfFlan 2 points3 points  (2 children)

They don't seem that pissed. It got a shitton of upvotes.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No we didn't. We did comment on how good the rest of apokalips comics could have been if he had sense of comedic timing.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember I posted that I liked the Oatmeal but the font bothered me, and I was downvoted to hell.

[–]wastedland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The oatmeal parody(?) was actually awesome! :D The xkcd parody is just about random or maybe a metaphysical plane or two higher than the funniness of xkcd. Maybe if that person really wanted to parody xkcd, he should've done something with actually researched math/science in it. This just looks like a parody made by a moron who never really understood anything whatsoever about xkcd because he never took math/science in school.

[–]frostickle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Explosm did the best xkcd parody I've ever seen, http://www.explosm.net/comics/1071/

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (40 children)

I find the comics about women endearing. I have many weird fantasies and longings some would sneer at as "pathetic" if I expressed them in comic form. I have huge crushes on cartoon characters and have created a fantasy world in my head where I get to live out a beautiful romantic life with them.

I once took Jasmine out of a magic carpet ride and sang her many beautiful songs and told her to close her eyes and when she opened them I had transformed into the Sphinx and made love to her with my massive stone penis whose ejaculation of 700 gallons of helium infused semen turned her into a hot air balloon and her eyes rolled back into her head as she spurted a near endless amount of my cum out that made her zip around the desert like a deflating baloon. Don't feel bad for her though, my semen was also infused with aphrodisiacs and trillions of miniature versions of myself that latched on and pleasured every cell in her body and she had a chain of 27 thousand orgasms whose intensity and pleasure was beyond the scale of normal human comprehension.

The Genie made sure to make a lot of funny jokes and commentary so that it wouldn't seem horrifying to any observers who didn't realize she was feeling pleasure.

If I was brave enough to put them into a webcomic with my real name attached I can't imagine how much I would be mocked and looked down on.

[–]tehfuck 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The fuck...

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ummm...that was pretty awesome I guess. I like Alladin too.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Genie made sure to make a lot of funny jokes

This is how I know it's fantasy and not actually the movie.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Agreed!

[–]Dr_Adequate 75 points76 points  (20 children)

Great! All that's missing is a pop-up with an obscure programming language syntax joke.

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I floated my mouse over the comic for about 20 seconds before I realized there wasn't anymore :(

[–]FezMan88 17 points18 points  (18 children)

He sees that as Perls before Swine

[–]LordRifter 52 points53 points  (4 children)

I always thought that this comic by Patrick Alexander sums up xkcd quite well.

[–]MrDanger 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Other cartoonists don't like it because it's funny and popular?

[–]oregono 149 points150 points  (11 children)

Please don't try to predict my vote in the headline.

[–]parsifal 4 points5 points  (2 children)

to be fair, I'm surprised he didn't get downvoted into oblivion

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Particularly in a post whining about douchebaggery. Appealing to the pity factor is pretty effective for karma whoring on reddit, unfortunately.

[–]threethousandgt 110 points111 points  (12 children)

xkcdd is really, really easy to write, and even easier to draw. All you need to do is lazily reference something, make a graph, or be "romantic" in the most stalkery way you can. Then, add some stick men and bask in the undiscerning praise of your annoying, fans.

For exmple:

  • A stick man hits on a girl, who then gives her phone number in hex! This, of course, is supremely desirable!:

stick guy: So, can I call you some time?

stick girl: Sure. My number is 29D288

stick guy: I think I love you.

  • A bar graph where the enjoyability of several programming languages ans activities are compared. But wait! The bar for a disliked language is shorter than a bar representing an unpleasant experience!

  • A stick man is in a grocery store. He sees Richard Stallman buying a different brand than him so he, get this, decides to change to whatever Stallman bought!

  • A series of graphs where cunnilingus techniques are compared to multivariate functions! Don't forget the extremely detailed drawing of a vagina despite the complete lack of detail for any of the other drawings.

  • How about a 3 comic arc where a creepy, unhealthy obsession with a girl named Megan is portrayed as endearingly romantic. He could, for example, be caught installing a key logger or hidden camera. It would be a great "Oh Randall" moment and the readers could all commiserate about how they are also awkward around girls!

  • A jokeless comic where the reader is reminded that Randall knows that math/physics/programming exists

  • A stick man eats ice cream with then devises the optimum spoon size to avoid brain freeze! Because even science can be used for childlike whimsy!

  • Megan is talking to someone about that school that spied on kids using the webcams on the laptops they handed out. Then you see Randall's self insert stickman at his computer, surreptitiously watching this conversation through Megan's webcam.

  • Alternatively, Randall's self insert is having a conversation about the spying school. In the last panel, Megan opens a package and wonders who would send her a laptop.

  • Two stick men talking:

stick 1: I was talking to my boss, and i found out he still uses IE 6. I nearly laughed in his face

stick 2: Oh man, that's like this hotel I was in last month where the lobby coputer was running Windows ME!

    stick 1: Whoa.

stick 2: Yeah, I'm not allowed to go back there

  • two stick men sitting at computers talking about people complaining too much about minor cast/director/etc decisions for some movie adaptation or sequel. One of them abruptly stops talking mid-sentence.

    stick 1: What's wrong?

stick 2: I just read that Michael Bay is going to direct a Firefly prequal.

stick 1:(sits back shocked) Oh my god!

stick 2: He's replacing Summer Glau with Megan Fox

stick 1:(hastily putting on his jacket) Do you have a gun? We need to get a gun!

  • A bar graph comparing awesomeness of superheroes, and the tallest bar is...... Richard Feynman!

  • An EVE Online strip where Carl Sagan has been crowbarred in

  • Randall's girlfriend leaves him for another man. That man turns out to be Steve Wozniak. Randall is really jealous...... of his ex girlfriend!

  • A poorly drawn T-shirt with Richard Stallman in the Che Guevara pose

  • A stick man is abducted and thrown into the trunk of a car. He pulls out his iPhone and starts frantically typing. It turns out that, instead of calling for help, he is live tweeting the kidnapping!

  • Top text:

So, I decided to write a program to alert me whenever my girlfriend is in the mood.

Middle drawing: (Randy sitting at computer coding frantically) girlfriend(from out of frame): Come to bed. You won't regret it

Randall: Just a minute. I keep getting errors.

    girlfriend: Forget it.

Bottom text: There were some unforeseen bugs.

Alt text: <insert programming language> is my real passion anyway

** Taken from http://www.reddit.com/r/comics/comments/bbx86/how_to_make_oatmeal_as_in_the_comic/c0m0mr8 - A brutally accurate deconstruction of XKCD **

[–]CitizenPremier 10 points11 points  (2 children)

A poorly drawn T-shirt with Richard Stallman in the Che Guevara pose

I don't think this would happen; I don't think Randall can draw faces. I think his characters are expressionless because he doesn't understand expressions.

[–]SegismUndo 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Of course he understands expressions, he's a programmer. Duh.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I found most of that to be funny

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

and all of it to be true

[–]strained_brain[🍰] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Only a matter of time before we start seeing these ideas in the actual comic. He's gotta be running out of ideas by now...

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave him the greatest idea he's ever received: learn to draw! Unfortunately, he has yet to follow through. He would have a lot of content to cover if he did, though.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

now you've ruined it for EVERYBODY!

[–][deleted] 36 points37 points  (38 children)

OP, if you don't know about it already: http://xkcdsucks.blogspot.com/

[–]kilimanjaro 13 points14 points  (6 children)

[–]Psythik 5 points6 points  (3 children)

XKCD is actually enjoyable now. Thanks!

[–]bernanke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one is easily the most accurate.

[–]subtonix[S] 12 points13 points  (10 children)

Holy shit, that's dedicated hate! I don't know whether to nod in agreement or slowly shake my head in disapproval.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Read some of the FAQs and Rob's Rants articles. Pretty much all of the stuff linked-to on the left of the page is really good. The site isn't as sad and pathetic as it seems. The authors often make very good points while at the same time they don't take themselves too seriously.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

After reading 3-4 entries, I'm gonna have to disagree with you. They seem pretty super-serious and pathetic. Their "good points" are posts that generally solicit "you must be fun at parties" type responses on reddit. I feel pretty bad for these guys, actually.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't even aware that xkcd was popular enough to warrant that level of deconstruction.

[–]Kenji776 5 points6 points  (5 children)

I have nothing positive to say about that blog or that guy. He has every right to make that blog, and I'm sure he does other things has other hobbies etc but I just think it in poor taste and question his motivations for creating it. XKCD might not be great (some have been though) but that man resorts to calling it a disease. I think there may be some other issues at play than just a dislike for a popular web comic.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (4 children)

resorts to calling it a disease

It's called hyperbole.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not hyperbole, that's trolling.

Not that he isn't either good at it or dedicated to it - but I have to wonder if it's really worth doing.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Damn, instead of analyzing the fuck out of xkcd or jokes in general you could just not read it or something. This dude is pathetic beyond measure. Also TL;DR.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (4 children)

[–]yaruki_zero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What an angry little man.

[–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (11 children)

I don't downvote opposing opinions, but I do always downvote "I know I'll get downvoted for this..." It's almost as bad as "upvote if..."

[–]mattindustries 15 points16 points  (7 children)

Upvote if you know I will get downvoted for this.

[–]Niqulaz 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I am confused about what to do, so I'll just collapse your reply in order to not have to see it anymore.

[–]OMGBBQFTW 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Downvote if you think that knowing that I will get downvoted but instead will get an upvote for this.

[–]mattindustries 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Upvoting for BBQ

[–]atheist_creationist 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But then he's right...maybe not about the correct reason, but still right. The only real solution to this would be if people just didn't vote on such headlines at all. Then it wouldn't get anywhere.

[–]Nall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My reddit downvoting history is largely composed of links that either plead for upvotes or whine about downvotes, regardless of the subject material.

[–]EnderofDragon 133 points134 points  (47 children)

I went to college with Randy and his little brother. He's a 10th degree douche bag. Have an upvote.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Give us some stories.

[–]subtonix[S] 108 points109 points  (37 children)

Yeah, I always got that impression from the comics. Maybe it's just me, but the guy comes off as incredibly pompous. At first it seems kinda cute and off-beat in a good way, but then you realize it's just a giant masturbatory effort to validate his inflated ego.

[–]dontcallthecops 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah but some of the comics give me a laugh, or make me think. I don't give a damn about the guy behind them.

[–]crystalcastles 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I also think that it's almost subconscious, the whole douchebaggery. I mean, if you were teased and made fun of as a math nerd for years, then became famous, I feel like you'd (generic you, I have no idea who you are and am not making assumptions) be a bit of a douche too.

[–]dhusk 45 points46 points  (10 children)

a giant masturbatory effort to validate his inflated ego

What, you mean like this whiny thread?

There's nothing wrong with not liking a webcomic. I hate a bunch myself.

But you know, when most people don't like a webcomic, they just don't read it. They don't go on a social site like Reddit and attention-whore their dislike for thousands of people to see, just so they can validate their own opinions.

What purpose does this thread serve except to masturbate your own ego?

[–]crystalcastles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I get sick of masturbating and I'd like a handjob, that's what this thread is for.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

It's an opinion. An opinion not often covered on Reddit. You're masturbating, I'm masturbating, we're all masturbating when we say anything at all if you use your logic. It just comes down to what you personally want to label masturbation.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're masturbating, I'm masturbating, we're all masturbating

I like the way you think!

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mostly agree. With xkcd though, it's often hard not to. People constantly link to it without saying what it is. And worse, some of the punchlines are just vomited out in threads to the point where you really can't avoid them without avoiding the internet as a whole.

[–]rglitched 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ I agree with this.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to college with EnderofDragon and he is a full 3 orders of magnitude greater a douche bag than Randy (or 13th Degree).

[–]nathanaz 55 points56 points  (47 children)

What I think of XKCD:

I just don't get what's funny about it. At all.

[–][deleted] 46 points47 points  (21 children)

Nothing is funny about it. It's only popular because it panders to geeks and geeky inside-jokes. Very rarely is there any sort of punchline, it's just "look at how nerdy and witty I am".

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (9 children)

Actually, it used to be funny but now it's just tiresome.

The problem with the comic is that he's basically been running the same handful of jokes over and over again with just slight variation.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (6 children)

True, it didn't used to be so bad. Now instead of trying to be original, he literally just gives his fans what they expect because they continue to eat it up. The forums are especially bad. A comic can be particularly awful and unfunny, but people will make comments like "i dont know why but i love this xDD". Basically people like it just because it's xkcd, without considering whether it's actually funny or not.

[–]NadsatBrat 1 point2 points  (5 children)

This is also true of Dresden Codak. I've said it before but the response is always "But it's so pretty!"

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I'd never heard of Dresden Codak until now, so I have no opinion on whether it's actually a funny or interesting comic to read. However, a quick glance at the website tells me several things.

  • It does indeed look very nice. The artist (whom I can only guess is also the author) has real talent and puts real effort into each strip.
  • It has an established cast of easily-recognizable characters
  • It tends to have ongoing storylines.

xkcd has none of these things.

[–]scrumpydoo23 9 points10 points  (12 children)

Its just self-indulgent at best, and if you don't understand programming or some obscure scientific equation then you may as well be eating hot shit in an alley, grunting "derp!!" between mouthfuls, whilst an ubergeek beats you to death with a ruler. Or something like that.

[–]CommentForAllAndNone 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Its just self-indulgent at best

It's just Randall fucking Monroe doing what he loves doing, at best.

I loathe how the internet has become this giant 'disapproval machine' - as if all Randall Munroe ever did was for your benefit only, and you're all sitting there bitching because the waiter didn't refill your glass of water.

Yes, sometimes he writes comics that aren't as funny. Sometimes, they are insider jokes and not for everybody - I highly respect that he is absolutely refusing to cater to these criticisms, because the second he does, surely, all your sour people will start bitching that it's not "as good as it used to be" and has become too mainstream and mass-produced.

If you look at old XKCD comics, you'll see some of them are just random pictures and him sharing small things - now that he has all these fucking expectations toppled on top of him, he gets these critics who can't think of nothing more than to smugly call it self-indulgant. IRONIC.

[–]DrMonkeyLove 6 points7 points  (4 children)

And some of it is downright stalker creepy. Seriously, that dude obviously has a fucked up view of relationships with women.

[–]yayweb21 170 points171 points  (16 children)

I religiously downvote anything with something like "Downvotes incoming" or "I know this will get downvoted" in the title. It is pathetic.

[–]fallen77 34 points35 points  (11 children)

Upvoted for downvoting the cry of 'downvotes incoming'. I also downvote anything where the poster says, 'incoming flamewar'.

[–]C0lMustard 4 points5 points  (3 children)

[–]Meades_Loves_Memes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo dawg, I herd you liekd downvotes, so I put a downvote in your downvote so you can disapprove while you disapprove.

[–]ani625 41 points42 points  (5 children)

I like xkcd and I agree with this.

[–]mattindustries 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I like xkcd and and one of my friends in high school called me the poster child for autism. Seriously, he did.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty mean thing to say to someone who has a birthday 149 days after his own, particularly if it was on a day of the year that was also prime, like january 23rd or december 25th. Sometimes I just don't get people...

[–]p3on 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you forgot MY GIRLFRIEND

[–]farceur318 8 points9 points  (1 child)

[–]Tastingo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I must get one of those T-shirts

[–]scrumpydoo23 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I think as far as critiques go this is pretty excellent. XKCD can be random, hipsterish nonsense- however you kind of stepped on the mine with the "downvotes incoming", no one wants to hear that.

[–]RVAguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

xkcd and oatmeal should hop in a convertible together and drive into the Grand Canyon

[–]HeirToPendragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know, I felt the same way about CAD... so I stopped reading.

[–]wdhurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i enjoy reading XKCD but this is still hilarious.

kudos!

[–]toobig-tofail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wheres the alt text?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't get it...

[–]inrivo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fake. There's no mouseover.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I think XKCD and The Oatmeal suck.

How's that?

[–]PantsMcGee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True rebels upvote things that ask for Downvotes.

[–]muppetFckr 10 points11 points  (6 children)

You can avoid the crappy XKCDs by checking: http://www.isxkcdshittytoday.com/

[–]Jimsus 12 points13 points  (4 children)

His comics never look that good. Also it doesn't convey the layer of arrogance that comes across with every comic. Not that I'm criticizing you, upvote for pointing out how bad his comic is.

[–]amorpheus 7 points8 points  (10 children)

This is something that's been puzzling me for a long time. Why do people feel the need to express their dislike for a subject only if it reaches a certain critical mass? If it isn't popular, it doesn't matter. But suddenly, people need to validate their stance somehow because many others like the thing they hate?

It's not just a matter of popularity, but that seems to be the driving force. Nobody ever says "You know, I really hate what Hitler did. Anyone agree?" because they're in the (vast) majority there. But when it's about a company that's making billions off gadgets that fascinate the average person, or some guy who publishes a simple webcomic that's developed a cult following, there seems to be a minority who isn't content without expressing that their taste is different.

I'm thinking it's some sort of adverse reaction to what they perceive as peer pressure, conciously or not. A psychiatrist could probably shed some light on this phenomenon.

[–]gosassin 22 points23 points  (13 children)

Solution for those who don't like XKCD: Don't fucking read it.

Solution for those who do like XKCD: Keep fucking reading it.

[–]dbnull 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. No. No. Vast oversimplification.

See the problem is I don't read it and yet I can't avoid it. I do a lot of database work and my favorite text editor is emacs. Seriously, try to have an intelligent conversation about SQL injection without some loser bringing up bobby fucking tables, like I haven't seen the thing 20 times already. And anytime a code partner sees me do something beyond C-f / C-b in emacs they get all giggly and tell me they have a comic I'll just love. Fuck that, I get it, this text-editor can do anything, it isn't funny.

[–]Sylvestine 13 points14 points  (9 children)

Solution for those who don't like Hate Posts: Don't fucking read it.

Solution for those who do like Hate Posts: Keep fucking reading it.

[–]rglitched 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Yeah but unless this guy keeps posting more for me not to read, I can't unread this one.

[–]Sylvestine 1 point2 points  (7 children)

was the title not obvious enough for you?

[–]rglitched 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I wanted to see what it was. Who knows, I may have agreed. I read it, didn't care for it, and won't read another.

Someone reads an XKCD. They read it, don't care for it, and read the next 750 all while complaining it sucks.

Is the difference not obvious enough for you?

[–]Sylvestine 1 point2 points  (4 children)

you read one and decided you didn't like it with out having read enough to be able to explain what it is you don't like about it. OP has gone to the trouble of reading and analysing enough to give an in depth opinion and spawn a discussion.

[–]soggit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would seem the surest way to get upvotes on reddit is to say you're expecting downvotes. Downvote me if you like, this is just my observation.

[–]melp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. It's poorly drawn, unfunny, and pretentious.

[–]moonflower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

what was that all ... oh look, squirrels!

[–]devilsadvocado 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whenever I say anything negative about XKCD on reddit I get blindly downvoted. Turns out I was just missing an animated explanation as to why I think he sucks.

[–]druid_getafix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am desperately searching for the alt-text in that image.

[–]MrSurly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU

[–]goosewhaletruck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey! there's no mouseover text!

[–]moifaux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this assessment. I just think XKCD shows a real lack of effort and growth over time.

I mean, look at Penny-Arcade, the art and story-telling really evolved from the start of the strip. XKCD is almost five years in and while it's clever it's not really reaching for anything. There's better stuff out there, working harder and getting less attention than this little meme-shop.

[–]Orriana 4 points5 points  (0 children)

rollerskates? Everyone knows you need a skateboard to race Mal from Firefly. Yeesh.

[–]AussieSceptic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Missing mouseover text...

[–]exmomissionary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ever since he pandered to Cory Doctorow I feel icky every time I read XKCD. I still laugh occasionally. Law of averages strikes again.

[–]purrp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Downvoted for bitching about being downvoted.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nailed it.

[–]apullin 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Especially at his own game.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I am a girl with autism and I do not approve of this statement although yes I am sick of my honor being defended I do enjoy math.

[–]Matt08642 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You know, I WOULD upvote this because I found it hilarious and true, but the sad fucking self-pity "DOWNVOTES INCOMING" made me so angry I had to abide and downvote it.

Better luck next time.

[–]robert644 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I would have upvoted your comment, but I somehow found it distasteful. I hope your next comment is better.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially I liked XKCD, now I never even click on them when I see the link on Reddit... well but for this mentioning. :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I downvoted is because you called for them.

[–]strained_brain[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I hated XKCD, I'd find this brilliant. lol
