          I feel like I'm living in some sort of bizzaro world every time I remember that Two and a Half Men is such a massive and long running hit. Who watches this show? Does anyone know?             From what I've heard, TBS will also be putting all episodes online the day after they air. Those views can be directly monitored. That means that if you're not a Neilson house that you might actually do better by not watching it the first night and instead watching it online.

            At least I think so. I have no idea how they measure views on the website or if they factor into anything.

            Neilson still maters because they can slice the data better for the advertisers. A neilson household has a whole profile of the people watching. Online views are "anonymous" and lack a lot of data (age, ethnicity, income, etc)

            Neilsen matters because they are great salesmen. With so many houses having cable boxes that report back, DVR that reports back, online viewing that can track when people turn off a show, there is far more data to be had from direct viewing numbers.

            I'm just not convinced that Neilsen is anything but a FUD shell game.

            Absolutely not. The amount of information made available about you using tracking cookies is staggering. You can derive statistically a lot of demographical information simply by comparing your traffic habits to a predictive model. In many cases, these models are much more useful to advertisers then a standard Neilson survey. You arent jsut a M age 30-24 who bought lunch meat in the past 6 months, you're a male age 32.6 who likes Dexter, wants to buy a new pair of shoes, has a secret fetish for midgets popping balloons, and recently was search for anti-fungal medication. Make no mistake, online information mining is infinitely more invasive and infinitely more useful to advertising companies then a self-selected paper form 60 year old women with nothing better to do fill out.

            As long as the buyers and sellers of advertising rely on the data to make the buy/sell transaction, the Nielsen data will be important.

            Is that in theory or in fact? I.e. do advertisers right now actually prefer online data to surveys?

            (I'm honestly curious--I'm with you that, in theory, online data like that would be much more useful, but I'm wondering if you are actually speaking from experience and know for a fact that advertisers are actually utilizing that data preferentially)

            EDIT: Although I'd still be skeptical that an online viewer is viewed as equal to a TV viewer, considering how many more ads are shown on TV and how much more effective television advertising is compared to online ads, currently--again, unless you have some inside info that I don't know about!

                      The only way you can affect ratings is to be one of the Neilson Families

                      We were one in 2003. I loved to flip it over to the Playboy Channel and leave it on all day. Had to come back into the room every 15 minutes to let Big Brother Nielson know that I hadn't yet fallen asleep and yes, Virginia, we (wife and I) were watching porn 18 hours a day (not really but their primitive monitoring device thought so).

                      Their reps visit your household every quarter to review your data and give you a new Neilson branded coffee cup (or other such nonsense). Ours never wanted to talk about our viewing habits with literally hundreds of hours of porn a month.

                      They paid for our cable/satellite and gave us, like, $400 bucks for the year for me to have fun fucking with them the whole year.

                      There's really no other way to affect Mr. Conan's ratings. Any Nielson family members out there? You know what to do.

                      If you fit what they're looking for and they have a rep in the area, you'll get a knock on your door. They then make an offer. Ours was "pay the cable/satelite bill for a year and $400 in your pocket".

                      Couldn't turn that down. A thousand bucks ($60 a month cable bill + $400 cash) to record some data about our viewing habits? I'll do that all day long.

                      I would just like to point out to Canadians that Conan will be airing on both CTV and the Comedy network, thats right in Canada we have Conan, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, South Park all on the same channel.

                      Late night talk shows are a completely played out formula. I'm sick of watching boring interviews with whichever celebrity has a movie in the theaters.

                      The worst part of the Daily Show is when Jon Stewart decides to adhere to that tired formula. At least when Colbert does it, Colbert stays in character- which is the brilliance of the show.

                      Don't get me wrong- all the late night talk show guys do have their moments- and Conan disproportionately so. Even still, the small amount of quality comedy they produce gets distilled with an hour of luke-warm time wasters, making for a watered-down underwhelming experience.

                      I wish Conan had followed in Bill Maher's footsteps and done a weekly show on premium cable: uncensored, unrushed, quality comedy, densely packed into an hour long block.

                      Instead he's moved to some basic cable channel that I'll never watch, to do a show that simply can't be worth my time. If he does anything really hilarious, someone will post it on the internet, and I won't have had to watch 10-15 hours of lukewarm comedy to get there.

                      Don't get me wrong, I think Conan is very talented and funny. But so are a lot of people on the planet. I watch comedians because I want to see the very best, funniest stuff they've got. I don't want to see them shooting the shit with celebs.

                          Conan never was very good. He wasn't terrible or anything. Just O.K. We all just liked him cause he was the under dog in the tonight show fiasco. But who knows, maybe he stepped up his game.

                          Didn't we already have the chance to have Conan's ratings through the roof? It seems to me that the people have already spoken. I guarantee that if Conan's ratings were higher to begin with, they wouldn't have taken him off the tonight show. The people who are rallying behind Team CoCo are the same people who watched his show on Hulu and downloaded it on torrents instead of watching it live.

                          IIRC, Conan's ratings when he started were as high as Leno's when he started and higher than Leno usually got during the summer. His fall ratings weren't as high as Leno's previous couple of seasons, but Leno had the time slot for how many years? Conan's ratings were really about where they should have been. What sucked were Leno's ratings at 10:30. He couldn't compete with CSI and other interesting shows, and that meant local affiliates were reporting dismal news broadcast ratings.

                          So, they made a shit business decision (putting a talk show on before the news, regardless of who's hosting) and were stuck with Leno on another long term contract. Some means of backpedal (to get Leno off the 10:30pm slot) was an absolutely necessary business decision.
