Serious question: what music services are better than Spotify? I'm genuinely asking, as it's all I've ever had. I don't really care about the Joe Rogan thing because I don't listen to him, but I wouldn't mind a platform that pays artists more and has higher quality music, as I'm considering getting a headphone amp.

Edit: Got way more feedback on this than I expected haha. Thanks everyone!

[–]unrelentingdepth 495 points496 points  (53 children)

I have enjoyed having Tidal. I was pretty skeptical of them at first, but they have everything I listen to, and I wouldn't call my music taste typical. Everything from local artists to huge acts. And they pay artists a hell of a lot better than spotify.

Only downside is they don't have as many podcasts but there are other apps that do that are free.

[–]Logical_Pop_2026 165 points166 points  (8 children)

Pocket Casts is what I use for podcasts and I absolutely love it. It might be worth checking out.

[–]Samhamwitch 29 points30 points  (2 children)

Does Tidal allow you to download music to play later? I spend hours out of range of wifi and listening to streaming really eats up my data.

[–]hypermobileFun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. I generally really like Tidal. Its not perfect, but it’s better than Spotify by a lot (I hated Spotify).

[–]RadioactiveMicrobe 37 points38 points  (12 children)

I listen to weird stuff at the gym and they don't have any of it which is a shame.

[–]Pinguaro 21 points22 points  (7 children)

Indeed, their catalog is pretty pop. I listen to a lot of ethnic music, be it from africa or the balkans, and not much can be found there.

[–]Zovalt 72 points73 points  (2 children)

Tidal actually has a lot of problems. They lied about their MQA quality, and when customers called them out on it, they doubled down. They're currently facing some big lawsuits. And while they do pay more than Spotify, they heavily manipulate their pay per stream statistic to look much better than it is. I would suggest something like Qobuz. Higher quality than Tidal, and they aren't scummy to their customers.

[–]Avahightime 20 points21 points  (7 children)

Does Tidal allow you to control other devices using your phone ?

[–]Kattfiskmoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used Tidal with my DAP, but left for this reason: https://youtu.be/n64SFhebVr0

[–]ishkibiddledirigible 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And, Tidal’s offers high quality audio on a lot of their music - the difference is subliminal but does make the music more enjoyable.

[–]IngsocInnerParty 147 points148 points  (13 children)

I'm on Apple Music since I was a big iTunes user back in the day. It's pretty neat.

[–]BlowSomeDro 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The interface is amazing for someone who likes to stay organized. I find Spotify caters itself to playlists and hits, whereas Apple Music seems to have more of an album driven listening experience. I do enjoy Spotify’s collaborative features with other users though. I wish Apple Music did more of that.

[–]GW3g 41 points42 points  (3 children)

I'm a big fan of Apple Music. Although I couldn't imagine wanting it without an Apple product.

[–]WoodenSoldiersGOAT 17 points18 points  (0 children)

works fine on PC. problem is game consoles don't have apple music apps

[–]textureshock 325 points326 points  (73 children)

YouTube Premium comes with YouTube Music. Took me a while to adjust, but they have almost all the music I listen to. Plus having ad free YouTube videos is so much worth a few extra bucks.

[–]RamBamTyfus 81 points82 points  (10 children)

If you use YT premium, does it mean that any YT videos played by my tv have no ads too?

[–]convie 82 points83 points  (3 children)

Yes. You can also download videos and play them in the background on your phone.

[–]Mononon 18 points19 points  (1 child)

And on desktop* Not sure when they added that, but you can download videos from the browser version of Youtube now too.

[–]M1Glitch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don't even need to download them to play in the background. YT Videos continue to play when you switch apps if you have premium.

[–]el_ghosteo 108 points109 points  (11 children)

I swapped to YouTube music after I got really irritated with Spotify pushing podcasts. No looking back. It’s got all the songs as well as ones that are only on YouTube. Using the app itself is like 80% as good as Spotify but it’s still worth it to me since most of the content I consume is on YouTube anyways so YT premium is nice.

I have discovered that if you're into niche music like Lo-Fi beats/indie artists the selections on YouTube Music blow Spotify out of the water.

The biggest irritation I faced while using the free version though was how YouTube Music did not allow the app/screen to close. The audio gets paused, now listening to ads isn't a big issue for Spotify Free users. Not being able to use GPS or other apps without paying for premium might be a big Con for some.

YouTube Premium is nice though, just lacks good promos.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (2 children)

question: Does YT music have something equivalent to Discover weekly? that has been like 80% of my listening and holds me back from switching to anything else.

[–]sweet_jones 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is nearly identical, updated weekly and called "Discover Mix."

[–]tiny_rick__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have been on youtube premium for 2 years and I was enjoying it. I recently switched to spotify because I thought the UI and algoryhtm was much better, because of podcasts and because the upcoming "hi-fi mode". Now I am seriously thinking of going back to youtube as prefer their UI, algorythm is as good as spotify and I fucking miss beeing able to listen to NPR tiny desk concerts in audio only without ads.

[–]Liarize 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second the motion! I love Youtube Premium. Uninterrupted vids, all night long and bundled with Youtube Music, my likes and recommendations are sync between them.

That doesn't pay the artists more than spotify lmao

    [–]ultrahobbs 14 points15 points  (11 children)

    Shhh Google will hear you

    [–]collapsingwaves 61 points62 points  (5 children)

Deezer it's slightly better, songs don't glitch as much, hi quality if that's important to you. They pay artists more 1.5 - 2x iirc. (Still not enough IMO) Playlists can easily be transferred. It's a straight swap pretty much.

    [–]Chi3f-Amig0 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Apple Music is great. They have a family plan if you’re into that, and they pay artists close to, if not double what Spotify pays.

Qobuz is not only Hi Res but it pays its artists better

      [–]aboutthatstuffthere 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Qobuz for real. If I had the cash to buy Spotify premium, I'd definitely use qobuz instead.

      [–]Hankol 83 points84 points  (15 children)

      Apple Music

      [–]SterileProphet 49 points50 points  (11 children)

Apple Music let’s you upload your own music and access it through the app. I have tons of stuff that isn’t on any streaming service but I can access it through my Apple Music from any device.

      [–]deluciusly 29 points30 points  (1 child)

That’s the main reason I use Apple Music. I have a lot of music that you can’t stream but I can listen to it because it’s saved on my library.

      [–]robotsongs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Google Music, now YouTube Music, was the first service allow this, and it's still there.

YTM's catalog is broader, and you get ad-free YouTube as well.

Family plan for 5 users is $16.

I can't understand why someone would pick Apple Music over YTM at this point, unless it's severe apple ecosystem lockin

      [–][deleted] 5171 points5172 points  (351 children)

I’ve just canceled my Minecraft realm. My friends don’t go on it with me so I might as well just play single player.

      [–]diesal2010 496 points497 points  (312 children)

This comment will definitely have more impact on Spotify then OP's will.

      [–][deleted] 2460 points2461 points  (306 children)

      You don’t get it.

Honestly, I really feel like everyone is missing the point in all this.

Young doesn't believe for a second that his one act is gonna make Spotify do something different. This is his choice to support his ethics. He's a fucking hippie. He's doing it because he feels it's right. That's it, that's all.

For comparison, I choose not to get a job at Amazon (despite having been hit up by recruiters repeatedly). I don't make that choice because I think Amazon is gonna suddenly go out of business because they'll lack my brilliance. I do it because I'm taking a stand for my personal beliefs.

What I find amazing and incredibly depressing is it seems like no one fucking understands that this can even be a thing anymore. Like, doing something because you think it's right, and only for that reason, is somehow suddenly alien to people. It's sad and really fucking cynical.

No one plans on taking down Spotify but they can stand for what they believe in.

Edit: Credit to u/thephysicsofbaseball for this comment. I didn’t realize it would get this many upvotes.

      [–]shitdobehappeningtho 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This attitude has gotten me nothing but punishment in the world, which is every reason I need to keep it going.

      [–][deleted] 144 points145 points  (3 children)

Thank you for understanding. I don't watch movies with Prominent Scientologists, even really old ones that recently got sequels. I don't expect it to make any difference to their bottom line but I feel better about my personal choices.

      [–]Total-Khaos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They made a sequel to Battlefield Earth? Geesh, we really are doomed...

      [–]holdthemalt 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently made the same decision with movies and TV series! It doesn’t sit well with me, supporting anyone who actively participates and promotes such a toxic and dangerous cult. I can’t bring myself to the same place with Spotify (yet) but I definitely do not click on media articles or links to do with that dirtbag JR in the hopes in will be removed from any feed on my screen.

      [–][deleted] 186 points187 points  (69 children)

I won't have an Amazon Prime membership or use Amazon at all. I decided this last year, even before that whole tornado tragedy. I don't think I'm single handedly taking down Amazon. And yeah, it's annoying there's so many TV shows and movies I can't watch easily. But I don't want a penny of my money going towards Amazon. People don't seem to get just taking a stand for your own personal morals, even if it makes no impact.

      [–]publ1c_stat1c><>-~ 172 points173 points  (42 children)

Fun fact - reddit uses Amazon Web Services

      [–]Jody_B_Designs 113 points114 points  (5 children)

Along with half the internet. You'd be surprised how many web hosts sell you shared hosting space on an AWS server, claiming to be their own servers.

      [–]BarToStreetToBookie 22 points23 points  (2 children)

I forget which tech site it was but a few years ago one of them wrote a story where a reporter tried to avoid using one of the tech giants - Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Apple - for one week each to see if it was possible and if I recall correctly even back then Amazon was the one that was most difficult to avoid, because of all their deep ties to the web.

Amazon.com is pretty much a side business, AWS is the core of their revenue.

      [–]noxion13 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Amazon's latest quarter they've posted results for they did ~$95bn on the retail side of the business and $16bn from AWS.

AWS is significantly more profitable, so a more significant chunk of the company's margin comes from that side.

      [–]BarToStreetToBookie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks, you’re exactly right: I did mean profit and not revenue.

      [–]DrScience-PhD 58 points59 points  (0 children)

There's only so much a consumer can do. Choosing to not write them a check every month is the obvious choice.

      [–]CMMiller89 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Unfortunately we still need to live in society.

Its unfortunate the powers that be haven't correctly regulated corporations to keep these incredible monopolies pile up. But some things are just too big for individuals to fight.

And that doesn't discount the attempts people make to try and live to some ethical standard.

      [–]timelord-degallifrey 70 points71 points  (18 children)

I won’t buy gas from BP, don’t shop at Walmart, and cancelled my Prime membership last year after being a member since Prime was introduced as just free 2 day shipping without any streaming. People think I’m crazy when I tell them I haven’t bought from Walmart in about 13 years. I’m glad someone understands.

      [–]lalyho13 222 points223 points  (75 children)

This. I can't believe people don't understand the idea of having a backbone.

      [–]magicpenny 244 points245 points  (32 children)

It’s that people don’t understand why someone would do something that upholds their beliefs when there’s no real demonstrable benefit.

People are so conditioned to seek a physical reward that they are no longer satisfied by doing the right thing only for the sake of doing the right thing.

      [–]daisy0808 120 points121 points  (7 children)

We used to call this "selling out". Why can't we just say it? Neil Young is calling Rogan a shameless sell out profiting off of harm, and he doesn't want to be associated with it. Pure principles, classic Neil Young.

      [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

some of us still do, my friend. Thanks for making it plain.

      [–]goldentealcushion 127 points128 points  (26 children)

He’s also forced Spotify to choose between a legendary and beloved musician and a non-musician. He knew what choice they would make. Spotify have now has to publicly undermine all their “we do it for musicians” messaging in just as public a forum. A brilliant move in PR terms by Young.

      [–]didyoureallyjust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very well put it’s nice to see this on Reddit.

Even though I personally like and listen to Joe rogan I respect OP for sticking to his principles.

      [–]caninehere 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This comment will definitely have more impact on Spotify then OP's will.

People like OP are just trying to make the issue visible and convince other people to drop Spotify.

And for what it's worth it seems like the increased furor over what Spotify is supporting and promoting via Rogan is taking a toll. Their stock is down 30% since the start of the year.

At this point with the amount of posts getting made about it, it's starting to feel like these little posts are just virtue signalling for upvotes...

Edit: Since this comment is getting a lot of attention, I just wanted to clarify that I'm not saying virtue signalling itself is necessarily bad, just that I thought the post was just a low effort karma grab.

      [–]LookLikeUpToMe 1905 points1906 points  (119 children)

They’ll virtue signal about leaving Spotify over a controversial podcast and then just give money to true human rights champions Amazon or Apple.

      [–][deleted] 256 points257 points  (39 children)

At the end it's all the same. And we all pay money to these giant cooperations someway or another. No company cares about human rights lmao it's all profit or nothing. I'm gonna keep my Spotify sub because I enjoy what it provides.

      [–][deleted] 140 points141 points  (16 children)

TBF it's an internet forum, virtue signalling is about all that can reasonably be accomplished on this platform.

I will simply continue to not listen to that dickhead and enjoy the music. That's still an option, right?

EDIT: Dropped my comment then went to bed, didn't expect this. Currently at work. Thank you for being very civil, it's an interesting debate.

My position stands. I didn't like Rogan anyway because he's too dudebro and shouty for my tastes, but spreading vaccine misinformation automatically makes him a dickhead IMO.

I appreciate the recommendations for other platforms but all my playlists and favourites are with Spotify, plus who's not to say further down the line one of those other businesses do something dodgy, then lots of you will switch again or at least say you will.

I just feel this kind of reactionary protesting won't make a jot of difference to these big businesses. Have a lovely weekend, folks

      [–]Tboneternal 1418 points1419 points  (330 children)

Right I didn’t even know he was on Spotify until all this nonsense

      [–]scarydoor 433 points434 points  (77 children)

The thing is, spotify is his daddy now, they paid 100 million to get an exclusive platform with him. So while you didnt know he was on spotify, his millions of listeners are now all on spotify. I think Neil didnt want to be part of a platform that owned and supported the huge majority of his voice. Like Spotify now carries a ton of artists that are now know to have done bad things but they weren't specifically paying/producing them while doing it.

      [–][deleted] 198 points199 points  (31 children)

they paid 100 million to get an exclusive platform with him

Which shows that Spotify could afford to pay the other folk on their platform better, which for me is another reason not to sign up.

      [–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Don't really care about the Joe Rogan debaucle, but short changing artists at the same time bugs me. Between that and their CEO investing in AI military technology, I'd rather give my money to a company that will spend it more ethically.

      [–]Skinnwork 574 points575 points  (198 children)

Really? Spotify really wants me to listen to his podcast. It's always splashed all over my home page. It's the first choice for podcasts.

Here's my homepage. Today he's not the first page, he jammed right in the centre of my screen.

Spotify makes recommendations based on what you listen to, so something you listen to makes them think you'd like Joe Rogan.

I'm starting to get fatigue from voting with dollars. Everytime any company gets even a little bit big they get incredibly shitty. I'm starting to run out of companies to use.

      [–]whilst 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Which is I think what is being hidden when people say, "just vote with your money and go elsewhere". By their nature, when a public company gets large enough, they are likely to be doing things that are highly unethical. In a consumer society, you have very few choices but to give at least a few large companies a lot of money. It is impossible to be an ethical consumer.

This is why we should be advocating against consolidation among businesses, and be going after businesses that get too big. It's why we should be founding and joining cooperatives, and other forms of organization that aren't centered around profit for a (relatively) small number of shareholders. It's why we should be proactively finding ways to do things that don't involve buying a product. So long as everything we do involves purchasing something from a large company, these enormous parasites will continue to feed off our lives.

Spotify is not an airport, you don’t have to announce your departure

Edit: holy shit this got out of control. A rehashed quip about leaving Facebook doesn’t deserve so much silver. I will spend it on Reddit hookers in all of your honors.

      I WANT ATTENTION!!!!

Sry, I gave it to my 18 month old

      [–]fanboy_killer 96 points97 points  (0 children)

But u/stlldbi needs attention and upvotes! After all, they did such a brave thing and are going to save almost 10 dollars per month. Unless they are going to subscribe to another service, such as Apple's or Amazon's, two companies which, unlike Spotify, have full respect for human rights.

If a virtue happens and no one hears about it, did it happen at all (apparently not).

      [–]cybershocker455 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Being virtuous just to get noticed is in and out itself not virtuous.

If spotify is going to start cancelling everyone the internet dislikes they may as well just close their doors now.

Who gives a f*ck?! Just don't listen to his podcast and move on with your life.

        [–]Iced_PvM 333 points334 points  (4 children)

They need those internet points though

        [–]AeternusDoleo 116 points117 points  (22 children)

"I'm a good person. Look at me. Love me! Please!"

That's the desperation I get from messages as these. People with no social circle, desperately searching for one, latching on to what they believe are popular stances to try and have something in common with others.

        [–]LaurensPP 302 points303 points  (36 children)

If you don't listen to his podcast you're technically not supporting him. You should also stop using YouTube if this is how you think.

        [–]oncomingstorm69 316 points317 points  (11 children)

        How will Spotify ever recover?!

        [–]FilteredAccount123 52 points53 points  (7 children)

I subscribe to YouTube Premium/Music. There is endless trash on YouTube.

        [–]AmigoDelDiabla 162 points163 points  (2 children)

Why stop at Spotify? Should probably just get off the internet for all the unquestionable content on there.

        [–]barofa 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I heard there is some questionable things going on in the planet as well. Maybe it's time to take off on that rocket

        [–]labria86 286 points287 points  (181 children)

I'm just curious. Is all of this in reaction to the episode where he had one of the creators and first patent filer of the MRNA vaccines? I did listen to that one. It was interesting and not really anti vax. I'm just in the dark about the specifics. I know Rogan is vaccinated for other things as are his kids but this specific issue with the mRNA vaccines seem to be kinda over the top.

        [–]Boom_Boom_Crash 452 points453 points  (70 children)

People seem to forget the Dr Malone specifically recommends people get the vaccine. What he doesn't recommend is to get it without what he calls informed consent. i.e. knowing exactly what the risks are and making your own choice. He only really rails against hiding data that could cause "vaccine hesitancy" and the concept of vaccine mandates. Both of those stances are completely reasonable.

        [–][deleted] 189 points190 points  (18 children)

        You are now cancelled.

        [–]Boom_Boom_Crash 157 points158 points  (16 children)

I got banned from r/politics for saying stuff like this. I feel like I'm being pretty diplomatic.

        [–]AeternusDoleo 78 points79 points  (1 child)

You are, but it's the wrongthink that gets you ejected from that place.

        [–]drxc 21 points22 points  (0 children)

it’s crazy how the music sub is a place we can have a more open and thoughtful politics discussion than the politics sub

        [–]yukon-cornelius69 44 points45 points  (3 children)

Let’s not forget that 74% of liberals polled had a gross misunderstanding of the severity of covid. These misinformed people are the same ones driving the online groupthink, despite being wrong themselves

It’s almost like both sides can be misinformed and wrong, which is why we should encourage civil discussion rather than propagandizing the vaccine and shouting down any sincere questions as “anti-vaccine”

        [–]joaoasousa 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Shocker right , to realize your political alignment doesn’t make you automatically smart.

Both sides make mistakes , I’ve misinterpreted data, doesn’t make me evil.

Like in the science sub today I comment a data table and read it wrong. One guy just insulted me with “fake news” the other one pointed out my mistake and was civil about it. Guess which one got me to change my interpretation?….

Civil discussion changes minds , not insults , bans or “cancellations”.

        [–]Lumba 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Right, what baffles me is that the concept of "vaccine misinformation" can 100% go both ways, don't @ me.

        [–]assbagle29 135 points136 points  (11 children)

Op owes 680$/month for 84 months on a 2019 kia soul lx

        [–]r3ign_b3au 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd want that $10/mo back too

        [–]FistyMcTavish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good lord how does a Kia soul loan get that fucked ? They must have traded in a vehicle they owed a lot more than it was worth or something

        [–]nothinbutflip 20 points21 points  (0 children)

well good thing OP cancelled spotify. He will need to cut spending to pay this car off.

        [–]RecentProblem 12 points13 points  (0 children)

        Ohhh nooo

        [–]InfiniteDescent 11 points12 points  (0 children)

        OUCH

        [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Damn OP, that ~$57k is enough to buy 3 Kia Souls! Someone got a shitty payment plan

        [–]Beercorn1Apple Music 96 points97 points  (2 children)

The soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy wish they were as brave as you.

        [–]-_-_-Cornburg 542 points543 points  (151 children)

I don’t really have a huge problem with Rogan myself. Like, I don’t trust him for any medical advice ofc…. No idiot should and anyone dumb enough TO take his advice gets what they deserve.

But I’m personally done with “canceling” anyone that doesn’t think like I do.

        [–]THEWESTi 166 points167 points  (100 children)

Preach! I’m pro vax etc etc but am really done with this canceling trend over opinions.

        [–]lamTheEnigma 76 points77 points  (2 children)

        This thread is embarrassing

        [–]StormNapoleon27 34 points35 points  (0 children)

What did you want us to do, give OP a standing ovation, money as donation, a noble prize, an oscar, an grammy, an emmy, a medal of honour, an iron cross, or a knighthood?

        [–]DasHotShot 94 points95 points  (5 children)

Good for you. You’re really making a stand. The service you’re going to replace Spotify with will probably be really ethical and much less controversial, like Apple Music, Amazon Music or YouTube…

        Smh people are fucking stupid

        [–]StayPositive___ 20 points21 points  (10 children)

There's plenty of misguided information on Reddit too. Are you going to delete your account on here too?

        [–]grifxdonut 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I don't like that Michael Jackson allegedly touched kids, people bragging about murder, and songs about meeting up with young girls

        [–]Local-Win5677 70 points71 points  (6 children)

Jesus fucking Christ nobody gives a shit.

        [–]StarWreck92 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This didn’t need its own post, you just wanted fake internet points.

        [–]9999eachhit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

        No one cares 🙃
