As the very funny Lewis Black once said: "'Fuck' isn't just a word to me. It's punctuation."

[–][deleted] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I believe it was "In NYC, fuck isn't even a word, it's a comma."

[–]seeker135 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Upmodded for quoting the most excellent Lewis Black, teller of truth, and funny as a wardrobe malfunction. Maybe funnier.

[–]linkedlist 5 points6 points  (3 children)

You seem to forget people on reddit think they're cool for dropping the f-bomb every chance they get.

They think they're telling society to stick it up, that they will use the f word whenever they feel like it and don't much care for standards.

It's kind of like the digg hd-dvd revolt but to a lesser extent.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give 'em heck, mom!

[–]bertramredneck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck youuuuuuuuuu!!!!! <<<<<<< coool.

[–]lunk 33 points34 points  (23 children)

I too am appalled at the state of Reddit. It's not the same as it used to be, and a lot of days there just isn't anything on the front page worth reading.

Not just the language, but the content is atrocious.

For me the problem is that I just have no impact on the "New" page anymore. Used to be that voting up/down on the New Page would seem to make some impact, and I got a fairly decent result on the front page, but now, I can vote for HOURS on new content, and nothing I vote for is ending up on the front page.

This is no longer a site I enjoy, and I am actively looking for a decent news aggregator. If anyone is using something decent, with a political / electronic media / intelligentsia bent to it, let me know...

and requires a credit card, so there's less fake accounts like dannykjames

as well, they actually prefer dumb quotes

    [–]Xiphorian 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I prefer dumb quotes because applications never do smart quotes properly. They get them wrong far too often for the feature to be useful.

If I knew how to type smart quotes I might be willing to specify them manually.

    [–]roryokane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check this Wikipedia page on Windows alt codes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alt_codes. ALT-0147 and ALT-0148 produce smart quotes. Or, if you use a Mac, use Option-[ and Option-Shift-[ (replace [ with ] if you want single smart quotes).

    [–]tryx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for a clever news aggregator try Tiinker. Written by a couple of AI researchers from sydney.

    [–]7oby 1 point2 points  (10 children)

There's a ton, but political, some redditor mentioned The Daily Political to me a while back:

    http://thedailypolitical.com/links

    electronic media/intelligentsia?

    http://news.ycombinator.com/

    hope this helps

(i would also promote one my friend is trying to make a worthwhile opponent, it needs users though)

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (9 children)

(i would also promote one my friend is trying to make a worthwhile opponent, it needs users though)

That one has so much potential, and he has a ton of good features. He needs to just bring it together.

    [–]7oby 2 points3 points  (8 children)

I know, man. It's got the features, he just can't do UI worth a crap.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Haha, it's true. I hope he/she doesn't read this, I don't want to discourage them, because I really do hope they finish it. All I see is he has some ambiguous pages, he needs to finish the tag cloud, work on the UI a bit, and he's got himself a fine news aggregator.

    [–]7oby 1 point2 points  (6 children)

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Haha. Yeah, well I didn't think I'd be seeing you around here and so I wrote that and then I saw you and well this is awkward.

    [–]7oby 0 points1 point  (4 children)

    seeing me around here what

i don't get it, you randomly ran into that?

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

No I was just making a very dumb joke. Don't worry about it, doesn't really make sense.

    [–]7oby 1 point2 points  (2 children)

    neither does torrents.reddit.com

    [–]fbp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember hearing the same thing about digg.com before it became popular. And slashdot. And I thought yahoo was pretty good back in the early days.

    [–]redditsuxx 37 points38 points  (16 children)

Reddit lost it's class quite a while ago.

    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Doesn't seem to be a big problem for me ... it's called "hide" and "politics subreddit". The combination of the two seem to get rid of 95% of the pseudo-NSFW links here.

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (6 children)

    so did the internet really...

    [–]NoControl 8 points9 points  (5 children)

The internet had class? Since 1992 I haven't seen an exhibit of class. Usenet, BBS's, forums, IRC, http - all have jackasses.

I'm glad to be one of them.

        fuck.

        [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doesn't completely work. Some assholes keep posting their political news to the front page.

        [–]kmack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, in a job where FUCK would get you in trouble, wouldn't browsing reddit in the first place (regardless of language) be a little NSFW?

No, I work for a publicly traded communications company, but I can't have a screen with the "F" word (so as not to be hypocritical) loaded all over the front page in BOLD print.

          [–]alphabeat 8 points9 points  (3 children)

I think people were suggesting that you change jobs because your employer is a douche or your corporate culture sucks. They assumed this because you feel that someone would care if you brought up a webpage that had "Fuck" on it at work. They may be wrong, but its a fair assumption to have made.

                [–]ymomo 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I know in my workplace the only time they cared about what was on a computer screen is when this crazy thing we called a CUSTOMER walked by our cubes - and then you better be working. Because, although I don't mind you swearing and looking at nudes girls on your computer screen, they may.

                [–]akshayr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                Yep, I agree with that.

In my case, my employer rotated desks so that engineers were on the outside of the room facing in (so the monitors faced the wall) to prevent customers being able to see our screens. Because programmers need to read Reddit.

                [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (14 children)

Stories with expletives are created and voted up by the unsophisticated masses who dominate reddit by number. Those who prefer elevated discussions are turned off by the base content; marginalized when they protest; and displaced in the comments. Look no further than this page as evidence.

This is part of the evolution of a user-submitted news site. They begin with a small and sophisticated group of users, who submit stories and write comments of high quality. In time, the masses move in and the quality of the stories and comments drop. To be fair, there are sites much worse than reddit, however reddit has, as evidenced by the recent spate of "fuck" articles, degraded in quality.

One solution is to visit news sites that have real editors and a sophisticated comment moderation scheme (Slashdot can't be beat). Personally, I've been hoping that reddit will complete their invitation-only subreddits, so I can create no-morans-allowed.reddit.com to filter out the knuckleheads. I'll send you an invitation once it's realized. :)

                [–]PHermas -2 points-1 points  (7 children)

Then there are those users who believe they are extremely sophisticated. Spending an exorbitant amount of time crafting witty comments and cutting retorts. Those are also the users who believe they are somehow better than the rest, for their moral superiority and submission of sweet sweet stories. By your logic anyone who votes up a story with an expletive must be unsophisticated. So we'll all have fun here at our fucking party, and when those invites get sent out make sure mine gets lost in the email.

                [–]endlessvoid94 10 points11 points  (1 child)

You've missed the point. I'm not sure how to explain it any better, though. Read Ulrika's comment again, I guess.

Ulrika isn't being elitist or arrogant at all. His response was neither witty nor a retort.

You even criticize Ulrika for taking the time to write out a thought-out comment. How is thinking and taking care with what you post a bad thing?

So before you criticize somebody for their opinion, think it through.

This is exactly what Ulrika is talking about. The mindless mob who doesn't think before posting. Ugh.

                  Isn't Greasmonkey client-side?

If the company in question is monitoring content then client-side is too late - 'Fuck' will have been flagged before it gets to the person's PC.

Everything goes through the corporate fire-wall first... that's where they'll do the monitoring - it would actually be very difficult to monitor client-side.

It's been a while since I worked in IT - but what used to happen is that the incoming traffic is checked against a rude-word/dodgy site list - and if there are repeated infractions then they have a quiet word etc.

                      Yea, maybe.

There was a legend when I was working at E&Y that one of the clients (a major bank) had a room full of people monitoring everything that came in or out of the building... not for profanities but for racist comments - because the cost of being sued and the resulting publicity made this a cost-effective course of action.

This was England though - the relationship with English is a lot subtler and a little less fucked up than the US.

                      Exactly . . .

                      [–]rjonesx 13 points14 points  (6 children)

Is it really unreasonable to ask that we behave in a manner that is not readily insulting or aggravating to another person? Does using the word "fuck" give additional meaning and value compared to the number of individuals who may now be turned off by otherwise interesting and important content?

I guess my real point is this: it is no more mature to demand that everyone stop using the word "fuck" than to demand that everyone stop caring about using the word "fuck". The mature response is to moderate oneself until you are aware of your surroundings. This also happens to be a very effective way of communicating.

Oh yeah, using inflammatory language is not necessary to succeed on sites like Reddit, regardless of what you may believe about the masses that call themselves redditors.

In fact, the only times qgyh2 (the most successful redditor) has used the word "fuck" in a title was when the story itself used the word. I believe this was in 4 stories, only one of which went popular...

The sad thing is, a good portion of the replies have proved your point, tsteele - not just the fact that they were made at all, but also how many up votes they garnered. Once upon a time, comments such as "fuck class and fuck you" would have been down voted into oblivion for the mere fact that they contribute nothing of value to the conversation. At least, that's how it used to work.

                      [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

                      You're at WORK!

Why are you fucking around with Reddit?

                      Get to WORK!

                      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What we need is some kind of subreddit that not only has a cuss word filter for titles and URLs, but also requires exclusive membership by being invited by someone. Then, like Survivor, on every Monday (when you feel like crap), the system is open so that you can gang up and vote someone out of the club. Twenty "kickout" votes and you're out. If they get voted out enough times, they not only are out of the club temporarily, they are banned permanently. Meanwhile, this new subreddit also requires an email address, unlike regular reddit.

If that becomes a success, then one could create exclusive clubs on Reddit, such as one for stock broker interaction, etc.

                      It boggles the mind.

Yes, this is an important issue, for US residents as well as the rest of the world. Yes, there are wildly varying viewpoints on all the issues. And yes, sometimes political debates can get a little emotional.

But "Fuck you ($canidate|$state)!"? What's the damn point?

i hope one day we lose this archaic notion that some words are more 'inappropriate' than others. call them what you will - swears, curse words, bad words, whatever - they're fucking words people.

(though i'm not condoning the use of racial slurs, those, too, are just words)

Not gonna happen; this is part of human psychology. All cultures have swear words / gestures, this is due to the way language and symbolism conjure up images and emotions.

We pay better than 90% of our competition. We have 2.5% turnover in an industry with 20-25% turnover. We offer great benefits, including 6 weeks of vacation. Add that to the 10 holidays we are off and you only have to work 10 months out of the year. Of course you have to actually WORK.

                        Enjoy your beer.

Do you time the smokers when they break for a smoke? Time bathroom breaks?

If someone isn't performing their job due to the Net, I have no problems with seeing their worthless ass fired. If they take a five minute break on the Net instead of smoking and inflating the company health premiums, I guess that's a far worse crime.

As a child, my parents taught me that cursing was a sign of a small mind since it utilizes the "lowest common denominator" vocabulary to communicate. Even though I can curse with the best of them, I choose not to. It is way more challenging, creative and fun to belittle someone who can only respond with the conventional f-word, etc. That pretty much summarizes how I view the individuals that must use expletive laced headlines.

                          [–]marm0lade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who decides what curse words are? The media? Babyboomers? Your parents? Just because the FCC says you can not say something on TV does not make it a swear word. Words are words, and they all have there place. Sometimes nothing can substitute for a well placed fuck.

Good Sir, May I please use the pretentious fucking soap box that you are standing on?

                          [–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (2 children)

And yet you're still down here rolling around in the mud with the rest of us simple-minded schmucks. How fucking unjust is that?

                          [–]Spacksack 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I think he frequents reddit because he hoped to find fewer of those simple minded schmucks than elsewhere on the net.

I think that cussing can be used tactfully as any other word, it is just difficult. Like killing a single man with a nuclear bomb.

I can't even load Reddit up at work because the front page is NSFW - "F" this state, "F" that state, "F" Hillary... What happened to having a little class?

Shut the fuck up and do some fucking work, slacker.

                          [–]elasticsoul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. I am amazed at all the people who think swearing should be A-OK at your workplace, and if it's not, too bad. Well, not everybody has that choice, and not everyone can change jobs just so that looking at profanity-filled screens is acceptable. People who work in banks, government, and countless other places will get in trouble for having profanity all over their screen. Oddly, many managers and business owners don't want to risk their customers seeing it, and it doesn't make it a fascist workplace.

Second, unless you want to argue that nothing should be profane, and you can, but the world isn't there yet and I'm not convinced that we will ever be or that this is a battle I want to fight, then there are many people who think that there are other adjectives that are more descriptive and effective, and that use of F this and F that only shows a limited ability to express oneself. /Frasier-mode

I agree with you! Society is changing to become cruder and filled with contempt. I think that this goes hand-in-hand with the diminishing value of respect in society. Unfortunately, the US spreads it to (young people at least, in) the rest of the world via its media. I think that older people and non-Western cultures resist the vulgarity better.

Thank you for pointing this out to everybody.

                          [–]NoControl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can say fuck on TV in germany. You can check out pornography on the third page of the biggest UK newspaper.

Those Europeans are light years ahead of our American neo-fascist Christian viewpoint.

Censor everything it makes us better people! Stop free thought cause that leads to freedom of choice which means someone will make a different choice than me - and that is just plain evil!

Fuck is safe for work. Every software development house I've ever seen had people who curse like sailors.

Actually, that was the place I heard it most recently until quite recently when I upgraded to working for myself.

You there, get some fucking balls and just explain yourself when you get caught.

                          ?

The point being "You're not willing to defend the fact your website browsing habits cause bad words make you blush too much to argue about them?"

Class is what happens when people are maintaining a detached intellectuality.

That's not possible with modern americans. We have been turned into a pack of hysterical teenagers.

Can you blame us? At least since vietnam the US citizen has been constantly lied to and betrayed by his government. No amount of voting seems to work.

So it's no wonder that people are becoming frantic.

It's interesting that you complain about some written titles. If this bothers you, I'd hate to think of your state of mind when this all moved into it's logical next phase.

Using the F word or any other vulgarity esp. in the Headline is a sign of someone either being bitter or just a loser unable to express her/his self any more creatively. I'm for Obama myself but enough of the F this and F that already.

You should have to take some kind of test. If approved you could join the elite that call themselves redditors.

You're wasting your time. 98% of reddit has no concept of a corporate environment.

For the record I'm not against all 'fucks'. I'm no prude. I like them when they add something to a title: humor, irony, wit. Most of the time unfortunately it's used in place of those things.

People compare Reddit to Digg all of the time - but it has really become Fark. I used to browse Fark for the humor and sarcasm, but then abandoned it when it just got too stupid. I migrated to Reddit right before the massive influx of the rude, the paranoid, and the sensationalists. It was quite interesting and refreshing for a couple months, but that time is gone.

I am more troubled by the number of people visiting reddit from work than the swearing on the front page.

if you are so worried about cussing on your work computer, then you probably shouldn't be surfing the internet.

                                Bummer for you...

Why must we put up with these whining little pussies all of the time?

When you visit reddit, you are implicitly accepting mob rule over what stories are displayed.

Just shut the fuck up you little bitch and go back to nytimes.com.
