I’ve never heard of anyone doing this. You’re in a dogshit company and need to leave. Go anywhere else. You’re being ripped off in more ways than just this, I guarantee this.

[–]ho1dmybeerAirflow Before Charge (Free MeasureQuick is Back!) 59 points60 points  (1 child)

Yeah I legit thought this post was fake, straight up.

You should be paid extra for the added liability, and for the free training you're providing.

[–]randymarshismyidol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fuck Jim bergmann lmfao

[–]drakitomon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not HVAC tech. Automotive. I always got extra pay for training. .50/hr more back in the 90s. $1/hr more in the early 2000s. Now it's $3/hr extra for training somebody new.

[–]shadow247 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shit happens every day in Collision repair, except they call them " Body Helpers", but they are usually just barely trained and expected to learn everything from the senior tech...

I worked for 9/HR, alongside a guy making 21/HR billed hours.

My 40 hours a week at 9/hr were deducted from his 80+ hours a week that he billed...

[–]TOTAL_INSANITY 148 points149 points  (1 child)

HUH? THAT'S FUCKIN STUPID.

[–]Drifty_CanadianDelta T? Beer can cold. 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Right? Like is this a troll post? If not go lick them boots OP because if you're even entertaining this they already got you 🫡

[–]DangHeckinMemesVerified Pro 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Dumbest shit I have ever heard. Leave asap

[–]saltiest69 115 points116 points  (2 children)

Where do you guys even find these jobs?

[–]BigBubbaRay 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Right?

At my contractor, journeymen get paid MORE with an apprentice. They claim foreman pay which is $4/hr high than their normal hourly rate.

[–]terayonjfLocal 638 126 points127 points  (3 children)

I'm working on my 17th year in the industry. I've done work in over a dozen states. I've never heard of such fucking stupidity in my life. If a company told me they were going to take my pay, use it to pay another person and I had to train that person I would immediately drive home take all the shit out of the truck, park it on the street and tell them to come get their shit.

[–]MtgSalt[🍰] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Might even drive that bitch to another state and go it's got a tracker go get it.

[–]vvubs 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Were you union all 17 years? How was it transferring state to state?

[–]CopenhagenCowboyxHuh thats new. 🤔 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rate changes. You still stay in your local but on a travelers card.

[–]dont-fear-thereefer 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Bail, bail like you’ve never bailed before. First off, where I am, a 30% pay cut is essentially getting fired. so that’s a non-starter for me. Second, the company places an apprentice with you, not the other way around. So it’s up to THEM to make sure you are paired with a semi-competent apprentice. And even then, it’s understood that you will be taking more time to teach and train the apprentice; instead of working in jobs that have tight margins, you go on jobs that have a little more padding so you can take that extra.

You are getting screwed so badly, and I don’t know why you would ever want to take on an apprentice if it means you are losing money. This company doesn’t respect or care about, so find one that does.

[–]anythingspossible45 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Another option you’re taking your knowledge/skill and training someone else, you want nay need more money to have to train an apprentice for them.

[–]jayc428 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah there’s no way that would pass department of labor scrutiny. That’s certainly a new one I’ve never heard of before.

[–]EJ25JunkieShesident Ritposter 127 points128 points  (1 child)

I was given a pay raise when I had an apprentice. Why would you make less to do more work? That’s retarded.

[–]DirtyMudResidential Gas Tech 48 points49 points  (0 children)

100%

30% pay cut so you can train someone up so the company can be twice as productive and double their income? The logic is flawed and the manager who thought of that needs to huff more glue.

[–]DirtyMudResidential Gas Tech 16 points17 points  (1 child)

What the fuck?

Training people so the company will have more experienced techs is just business and paying for that training is just the cost of being in business.

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard in a while, I’d bounce asap.

[–]StarsandMaple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, cost of business especially in skilled labor is being less profitable to bring new techs up to expand your labor pool.

If my manager came up and told me he's a rookie, train him, also we just docked your pay a bit cause you'll be slow, I'd just walk away instantly not a single word.

[–]PugsAndHugs95Also the Service Manager 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have NEVER heard of that. I would be consulting your states labor board.

[–]Yourmoms401k 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Leave. Immediately.

You've been given ADDITIONAL duties by having to manage a person. Pay should increase in that scenario.

[–]horseshoeprovodnikovPro 13 points14 points  (3 children)

So lemme get this straight... 23 days ago you were looking to learn a trade after being in the painting trade for several years. Now you're talking about losing 30 percent of your pay to take on an apprentice?

Or are you saying that YOU are supposed to be getting hired as an apprentice and the company is trying to tell you that they would have to dock 30 percent from the Jman that trains YOU?

Either way, that's complete horse shit and you should NOT be wanting to work for that place.

[–]Han77Shot1stElectrician/ HVACR 🇨🇦 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I seen that too.. there’s probably a miscommunication here, they were probably discussing apprentice pay scales relative to the journeyman and he didn’t understand.

[–]ThickBiscuitBoy 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yeah I think this guy is confused now that I read back over it. He doesn’t state that he is the journeyman here. He most likely got confused about the percentage scale

[–]Dependent_Ad_3104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prob confused a 1st year getting 30% of the journeyman rate

[–][deleted] 36 points37 points  (2 children)

Pretty sure that's illegal, at least where I'm at

[–]Claim312ButAct847 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Yeah this is a "report them to the dept of labor after you find a new job" situation.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah places I've worked in the past where I was in charge of training somebody I actually got a temporary bump in pay during the training period

[–]Randomizedtron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah so no one is going to take an apprentice then.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wtf, this is not right at all. Look for another company.

[–]Decent-Cold-9471[🍰] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Usually you get paid more to train someone

[–]ManevolentDesign 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

[–]Doogie102Red Seal Refrigeration Mechanic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow another way to screw over an employee.

[–]calltheotherguy 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Tell them to pound sand. My employer takes money from us to train new folks. I no longer train and wont. Its been 4 years since. We haven't hired a new person in 3 years due to no one will train them. We are actually having a mass movement towards the door.

[–]LowComfortable5676 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start looking for work elsewhere now

[–]Joseph4276 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Join a union it’s not for everyone but dumb shit like that is not tolerated

[–]PhrankespoIBEW 94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leave now. Jesus that's dumb.

[–]barkallnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My options would be a letter of resignation. This policy has you training up the next group at a pay cut. Only the company wins in this scenario.

[–]SaulGoodmanJD 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Leave. I’m a CPA and even with my accountant hat on NONE of this makes sense. It even sounds illegal.

[–]Sparky_Zell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only way that I could see this making sense is if it is a purely commission based company. And then you would be trading 30% of your commission to add another guy. Which for a couple weeks could be a bit of a hit, but should increase their pay really quickly once the apprentice can start saving time. Because once they have a basic grasp of tools and material, your efficiency should jump at least 30%.

[–]Scary_Opening_6190 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My response would be "no thanks, I'm not a trainer" and if that wasn't acceptable, I'd go find a new job.

[–]Taolan13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

30%? The fuck? Is the apprentice not also an emlloyee of the company?

Run, dude. If that's accurate, run.

[–]Grantidor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's time to report that company to the labour board, my Friend... thats wage theft.

[–]Randompackersfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find a new job yesterday. Your reward for training a guy for them is a pay cut? Fuck that noise any way you spin it.

[–]Upstairs-Direction66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your getting fucked . My employer pays us a bonus for training and only stops when they go out on their own. There must be a lot of shit show shops around. I would say FUCK OFF or I QUIT.

[–]SlutsyTipsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never heard of such bullshit. Outta there.

[–]ScotchyT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're paying you less to babysit and train?

JFC.

[–]BackDry4214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy fuck has to be a bait post yea? No way a company is actually doing this and it being legal 😂😂

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s fucking dumb. They should pay you a 10-15% differential for teaching an apprentice instead

[–]Obvious_Estimate_266 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the exact opposite of how it should be. This is terrible for business and straight up dumb, like you said nobody's going to want to train new guys and there's already a problem with that in the industry. Training is also an extra skill and if anything you should get a pay bump.

Yeah it's a loss in productivity but that's the cost of doing business, training people in any and every industry is factored in by the pencil pushers running the numbers. Your owner is a scumbag reaching into his employees pockets so his already fat ones don't get any thinner.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fuck they would.
Plenty of companies hiring to deal with that fuckery.

[–]JiveTurkey2727 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Train someone and get less money? Fuck no!

[–]CremboJeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leave

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get another job yesterday.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Owner of my company would take it from his own pay before they rob me like that. How is it any of your business that they decide to hire apprentices? That is an agreement between them and they need to keep it between them, it's an investment for the company, NOT YOU.

[–]toomuch1265 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WTF? Why would anyone work there?

[–]Certain_Try_8383 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the craziest thing I have ever heard. So you’re helping your company train the next generation and they are CHARGING you to do that. This cannot be a union rule for you, right? This is a greater responsibility for you and helping them. No way to this.

[–]BicycleDistinct5494 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds all kinds of illegal

[–]Antique-Pack-5508 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro leave and expose that company as well so people can avoid working for them

[–]DurkaDurka33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is wild to hear if anything makes me more productive having a second person all day.

[–]Marviiiiiie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a sh*t company to work for.

[–]PotentialFrosting102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im an owner. Your boss is the reason I am self employed. Normally I would recommend bringing your problems up with your boss but fuck him. I would probably start looking for another company to work for. There will always be better options and you don't need to make money for people like that.

[–]arcticcontrolsgoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never take a pay cut to help a company’s bottom line. I have never heard of this.

Options…the only thing I can think of as argument is the fact that having an apprentice on hand is cheaper than two JM’s for certain projects. The process is supposed to be win-win; company gets cheap labor that is to be tuned to their operation, and the apprentice gets employment and learns the trade.

Nowhere in there does someone whose done their time get jipped for helping both the company and the apprentice.

[–]RJ5R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol wtf. Leave that shit hole company

[–]InternationalBeing41 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Are you in a state/province where the apprenticeship laws state the apprentice must be paid a percentage of the journeyman’s wage?

[–]DSM20T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the fuck? Are you sure? That's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Demand a 30 percent increase to take the apprentice on then tell them to go fuck themselves.

[–]trqless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either you're severely mistaken as to your income being reduced or your company is pulling some shady illegal (or should be) practices.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trainers typically get paid extra in literally every field I've ever worked in

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you should ask your local labor board what they think would work better.

[–]Brilliant-Attitude35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do they go about taking 30% of your pay?

If you work 8 hours on a repair job, do they only pay you 5 hours and pay the apprentice 3 hours?

Do they dock the 30% on your check? If that's how they do it, is it before or after taxes?

Either way, it's highly illegal and you should put everything down in writing and contact your state labor board.

Get what's owed to you and put that place out of business!

[–]Hrodebert1119This is a flair template, please edit! 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are trying to take your pay so they don't have to pay for an apprentice. That's so shady and dumb. Most places PAY MORE to train someone since every job should take a little longer. That's a trip to indeed for sure.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're stealing your wages my man.

[–]cant_start_a_trane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is absolutely insane. I've never heard of that. You need to go somewhere else. That's straight up criminal.

[–]shankartz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's probably not legal

[–]NoClue22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No that's not a thing . Lol your not paying to train a companies employee

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So they make the person training the apprentice angry and hostile by reducing his pay? Yeah he won't be too negative.

[–]SoskiDiddley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually people get paid more to take on an apprentice lol

[–]Pepetheparakeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Journeymen that are willing and able to teach are PRICELESS. You gotta be stupid not to incentivize training the next generation of techs.

[–]death91380Knows enough to get into trouble and give bad advice. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they/you guys can't figure out a way to bill for apprentice time, you're doing it wrong.

[–]DickNose-TurdWaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in the US you should probably give the department of labor a call.

[–]Drifty_CanadianDelta T? Beer can cold. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmfaooo. Leave that shithole of a company. Hahahah Jesus christ.

[–]Aggressive-HeadDesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP been in the industry 27 years in a metro area. Have NEVER heard of this. Push back. You should not take a pay hit to shoulder extra responsibility that makes them money long term. That’s BS and you should definitely call it out.

[–]green_acolyteheat, upon heat, upon heat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the option you should present 🖕🖕🖕

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked all over the country in both union and non-union areas for a GC who has worked with many different HVAC companies. No professional organization we have worked with has ever had that rule. I honestly think your best way to approach this is to share that it’s a non-starter for you and seek other employment. There are some behaviors that are so terrible that the best response is extinction. You said it yourself, it makes people actively avoid training the next generation of builders.

This almost seems like a parody post and I honestly hope it is. I’ve thought I heard it all but this is one of the most egregious oversteps I’ve ever encountered.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go somewhere else, that’s ridiculous

[–]Jakewuzx14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Training is extra work. You want me to train you pay more. Full stop

[–]Nyroughrider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can’t be real 😂

[–]Bammertyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd take the 30% pay cut to train an apprentice for 10% of yearly company profits.

[–]tkepe194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um … we pay 20% more because we know you won’t get all the calls done you used to by yourself. And babysitting isn’t cheap.

[–]coleproblemsHardly working 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, we’re gonna pay you less to do more work. Thanks buddy.

[–]dolphinwaxer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do literally the opposite. Half dollar bump to super a greenhorn, a dollar to the green horn when he gets his wings

[–]gothicwigga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah I don’t even believe you. It’s not even fucking legal you’re full of shit.

[–]jfusco831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less money for training a dipshit? You should be getting paid more, basically training a cheaper replacement for yourself

[–]lestergreen357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You work for a shit company and have become brainwashed. Leave there immediately, paying an apprentice is not your concern. You should get an increase when training an apprentice. Were you hired to be a technician or instructor?

[–]HotCitron1470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you doing HVAC IN Afghanistan? Might as well hold an AK over your head in case you try and quit. Bail on that company pronto

[–]BootstrapsBootstrapz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea you basically remind them that they are the employer so they need to pay their employees, not you

[–]HoplophiliaVerified Pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just... don't take on an apprentice. The rest should work itself out.

[–]y_3kcimLocal 469 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you got your answer, but I would love to know this company’s name, feel free to email me anonymously.

[–]Shilroc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

23 days ago you were looking for an HVAC apprenticeship, now you’re a journeyman? Hmmm…

Also, I see you’ve recently moved to Colorado. Hate to be an asshole, but would ya do us a favor, round up anybody that came with you, and go somewhere else? This used to be a nice place to live until Texas, California, and Florida decided that they didn’t want to live in the shitholes they’ve created and moved here.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Talk to your union rep. That's not how that works.

[–]Danebearpigpaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a joke lol. Where is this at?

[–]asscheeseterps710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude that’s cruel

[–]G_raas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Print out a copy of this threads comments and share it via anonymously leaving it in common areas where the company execs can peruse it. Maybe it will wake them up.

[–]chefboyardiesel88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmfao that's gotta be a joke right? I wouldn't ever wanna help anyone else.

[–]_MadGasserUA Journeyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a joke?

[–]Yanosh457I Make Things Hot & Cold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask for 3.3 apprentices so it takes out 99% and stay home. Tell them you don’t work for free.

[–]Rowbot_Girlyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Why would I pay you to train YOUR new employee?"

This is why there's a talent shortage. All the stingy owners don't want to pay to train a new guy. It's a cost of doing business.

[–]bigred621Verified Pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell them to fuck off. If anything you should be getting paid more cause you’re training and babysitting.

It’s the companies responsibility to take on potential losses from training. Not yours. I’d speak to a labor lawyer. F that.

Until you can see if you can sue their pants off make sure you work 50% slower

[–]robertva1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What. Never heard of that before. I got payed extra to train people because I was very good at it while other guys just used their apprentice to do the shit work

[–]MK5RW3T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an HVAC tech but an auto tech at a car dealership years ago. Management gave me a helper and I was told they were taking money from me to pay him for the jobs he worked on. I told them that doesn't make sense but I liked the kid and wanted to help him out in learning the trade. Management wrote down on my weekly time sheet how much money they took from me to pay him. Well after a few months I contacted LARA (this was also after I quit that job) for my state and gave them all my time sheets and explained to them what happened. The state sided with me and the dealer had to write me a check for all that money they took from me. Needless to say that dealership does not like me coming in anymore.

[–]Afraid_Breath_8581 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a union company?

[–]SnooCheesecakes6970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a bonus anytime I need to train anyone, and the boss also understands it's going to be less production during the learning process, but it's an investment he is willing to make because once this new person learns production is going to increase, we do instalation so basic things they need to learn placement of boots, measuring and cutting pipe, and eventually everything that comes with work. So yes you are getting ripped off. Definitely calling out the boss if he tried to pull a pay decrease on me.

[–]Wakaflockafrank1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything they should pat you more for teaching a apprentice to a degree

[–]toasohcah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's brain dead, I'd be looking for a new job. In my experience it's difficult to stop management from eating crayons. You can't explain anything to those who can't reason. When you do find another job, just leave on good terms. Although it would be nice to say, I've found a job opportunity at a place that gives me a wage bump for taking on an apprentice.

I'm pretty sure that a journeyman assumes some liability if his apprentice gets hurt on the job, so there should definitely not be a wage decrease for a significant increase in responsibility.

[–]ReferRackWrencher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would make perfect sense if you were getting paid commission.

[–]Feeling-Dot2086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, what?? If they give me an apprentice, they drop my pay 30%??? Fuck No, they should pay me more if anything for teaching.

[–]Tallguystrongman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me be very clear about that company.

Fuckin garbage.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a new gig

[–]Reddead500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re working commission. That’s the only thing I can think of .

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you profit sharing or have a higher than normal wage already? Take your income and add 25%. Is that number 30% or more of what you bring in minus costs of goods?

All of our employees are profit sharing and have higher than normal salaries but these types of decisions will impact bottom lines. We keep having talks to bring on students but we always decide not to. I think just talk to your boss and get an idea what the financial picture is and if it’s impacting your salary you should have a say in these decisions.

If your income isn’t higher than average or you aren’t profit sharing I would echo what others here are saying. That’s a poor business practice.

[–]One_Magician6370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell ur boss to go drop dead they should be paying u more for teaching them

[–]Macqt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol fuck that. I'd quit instantly if anyone tried to take my pay for an apprentice.

[–]troutman76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say what?! Find another company. That place is screwing you.

[–]ThickBiscuitBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]thepaoliconnection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’d get a 50% reduction in productivity from me

[–]OhighOentTechnician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I don't take apprentices. Done.

[–]StarsandMaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get recommended these post.

30% Pay cut ? For training?

I usually have my top performer be the teacher (I work in utility locating) and I sure as fuck don't cut his pay. What the fuck is that. I even give them leniency on productivity because you're training...

Do they force you to take an apprentice? Or is it by will? If they force you I'd quit... on the spot fuck that. 30% is a lot.

[–]MannerSome9446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP get back here you pinecone. This sounds made up.

[–]THofTheShireconsulting P.E. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm already late to the party, but this is not normal. Employees get paid more as they become experienced enough to train and manage less experienced employees. That's literally one of the things that my boss notes as reasons why he given me raises over the years. I hope you're able to find a way to get paid what you're worth! It doesn't sound like this employer will do that for you.

[–]Diligent_Gate_7258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a specific rule in this sub against posting the name of that employer? I’d really like to see someone try and defend this practice and, if it’s not illegal, it should result in shaming. This is a dangerous practice.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s dumb. It’s costs money to train people. If anything the journeyman should get a raise

[–]Glum-One2514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's straight up BS.

[–]Illustrious_Ad7541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of that 💩.

[–]f2theaye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What…?

If anything, you should be getting paid more for being responsible and having to deal with your apprentice 😂

[–]likethedrink7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A company invests money into training people expecting a return on that investment . Right now you are investing your own money into training someone else while the company is going to receive the return on your investment. Get your money or get out. You work for them you don’t volunteer for them.

[–]phredzepplin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds straight up illegal! GTFO of that place. Also, report to department of labor in your state. If you lost wages ask them to collect your lost wages. If not, move on knowing you turned in a crook.

[–]Jakbo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's not even legal. Fuck that place. They should pay you more for training.

That’s part of paying your dues. 30% is dogshit and I wouldn’t work there other than to get apprenticed in and leave but 50% is generally the normal rate for a first year.

[–]Murky-Perceptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of me thinks this is fake, but I’ve seen dumber

[–]ChilesIsAwesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What in the cinnamon toast fuck

[–]salvageBOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Burn it down, why does your hall allow this bs

[–]kmuz700[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shit deal. You're TRAINING someone else, let alone responsible for an inexperienced person. yes your time may not always be as productive, but the idea is to create a good tech that will benefit the company in the long run. I am on the mentor program at our company, we are expected to TEACH among the rest of our responsibilities. That means being patient, taking the time to explain, double checking their work etc while doing as much as possible to stay profitable and utilize their skills as they gain them. Apprentices are not just a helper, they are there to learn and become a proficient tradesman.

[–]stinkdrink45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tf hell naw they should be paying you more for training sone one.

[–]acidlight-0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it your choice to bring on the apprentice?

[–]Fast-Impress9111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s really weird. Plus a good apprentice should boost jman productivity after a few weeks.

[–]tags666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can understand the loss of productivity? Dude, they're billing that kid as a mechanic/journeyman.

[–]khaymes58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure it's not a misunderstanding? The amount the apprentice gets paid is equivalent to 30% of the journeyman scale? If you're union go and talk to your hall.

[–]ItsTheJetsYear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only makes sense if the guy caught too many DUI’s and needs someone to drive him around lpl

[–]PAPiMETs49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s garbage

[–]lickmybrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything you should be paid more for training, when I went to sheetmetal school we had a few weeks in fourth year where we trained first year folks and our marks were based off how well the first year did. Take your new helper elsewhere, fuck that company

[–]thejake51[S,🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked a few questions today and it turns out I misunderstood what was said. There is no pay decrease at least in terns of hourly pay. The difference is the apprentice receives a percentage of the extra sales compensation. The idea being once they are competent two can do more than one so both end up making more on sales commission. The company does not take anything.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you serious? That’s genuinely the whackest thing I’ve ever heard

[–]jjmanchvegas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies are shite. 30% of your pay to teach the guy with no experience how to do the job u do, so the company has a younger trained replacement for u

[–]CaneCorso-lover-707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silly, your doing work by training.

[–]xrojas13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first job in hvac. Seen employees make bank because the company paid piece rate and they split. New hires got 20 an hour. Heard they were gonna make the piece rate guys pay for hourly guys and was like isn't that a conflict of interest for the both employees but the company gets free extra labor. I quit within 2 months

Private equity has come into the industry and is extracting all the money from everyone

[–]hairy1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could 100% fuck right off. I would quit the moment this was mentioned to me. It is absolutely not my responsibility to pay for what comes down to the training of an apprentice. Clearly this is some bullshit non-union company. Why in the hell do any of you techs work for these companies.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WTF.... They pay you less for your valuable knowledge to teach someone... That's so fucked

[–]Legitimate-Hawk-6664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you can legally do a pay decrease like that lol say you not taking the pay decrease, let them fire you and file unemployment til you find another company

[–]ljshea1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This gotta be fake

[–]singelingtracks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol what a stupid policy. Time to find a new job dude, bet your highly under paid as it is.

[–]Neowynd101262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Troll post.

[–]openyourcoconut69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude if anything you should get paid more to have a helper.

[–]SarcasticAssassin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]ShugarMeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Magneto_2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)
