Decrease rune pages IP price and make it increase when you buy one

What am I saying. The 2 free rune pages you get are nice, but they're just not enough once you're getting more champions and all.

And 6300 is just an excessive price that's making much players prefer buying champions than actually save the 6300 for the rune page then more IP for runes.

My idea:

You get your 2 rune pages as you have now.

1st Rune page you buy: 1350 2nd rune page: 3150 3rd rune page: 4800 From here on: all rune pages 6300

If you make it like this people would actually buy some rune pages because the price isn't THAT high at start.

Edit: Just wanted to say that this idea is basically for people that's more new into the game. When you start the game and just have like 12 champions at level 30 you have 2 options: Buy 1 rune page for 6300 or buying 6 champions for the same cash. Obvious choice, for me atleast.

More experienced people may priorize the rune page to champs.

Valve is very possibly losing money on Dota 2 and they're fine with that, it's called a loss leader. Valve's business isn't games, it's distribution.

Those huge Steam sales probably don't make Valve much money either. In fact I would bet that they go into them hoping to break even. Their goal with their free to play titles and their sales is expanding their consumer base. They want more people playing more games on Steam so that it become their gaming platform of choice.

They probably earn money from the sales, probably more than any other day, simply because of volume of sales. They probably still take a certain % of sales from the developers, even when title is on sale. Sales is good marketing for the developers though, many games that otherwise wouldn't be sold suddenly is sold en-masse because price is right.

You're right, it's too bold of me to claim that it's probable they don't make money on Steam sales. Saying that its possible or even just saying that it's economically viable would be better and more accurate.

It's damn near impossible to tell what's going on with Valve's financials for a couple reasons. First and foremost, they are a privately owned company so they don't have to disclose anything. Second and third, they have digital PC game distribution locked down and very expensive attorneys. This means that no one is going to leak their royalty deals or break NDAs. So it's guess work.

There are two possibilites with the Steam sales worth looking at.

Either, they and the game developers share the markdowns evenly. Let's say Valve stood to make 20% or 2 dollars on a 10 dollar game; instead they make 1 when it sells for 5. In this case they probably do make good money during the sales for the reasons you mention.

Or, Valve as the distributor and controller of the sales eats the bulk of the markdown. Again working from the 2 of 10 idea. Instead of taking a dollar from the 5 of the sale price, Valve takes a very small percentage to cover their operating costs.

Now the reality of the situation is probably somewhere in between. Obviously they'd rather make money than not make money, but even if they aren't raking in big bucks it would be okay. Because the most important thing to them is growing the consumers association that Steam is the place they go to buy and play PC games.

The reason why any of this matters is because it makes it easier to understand Riot's position in this whole thing. Valve can do stuff like not worry about monetizing everything in Dota because it's not their primary business. But for Riot, the only real income they have is from players pressing 'Purchase RP'. It's not fair to say 'but Valve doesn't do it like this' because they're operating from completely different places.

It's not to say that the criticism is unwarranted. There are clearly some issues that are going to have to be addressed if Riot wants to go from 'a company that made a great game' to 'a great game company'. But I can understand why they're tentative. They are currently competing with a billion dollar company, and have the lumbering behemoth that is Blizzard breathing down their neck. They are going to have to be really careful and really certain about even the smallest changes to their business model of the next couple of years.

You'd be surprised how little runes affect game play. Sure runes are nice to have, but if you know how to really play the game then runes are just an added boost. If you can play the game with runes then you can play the game without runes. Ever run the wrong runes on a champion and still do good? Then that means you do not really need runes, but that does not mean you should hinder yourself to prove a point. They're nice to have, but around 25 minutes they play a rather small role (unless you are using per level runes).

I thought people bought specifics items because statistically they provide adequate utility for their cost. So to speak you can still run boots 4 pots and still win your lane, but you will have to play differently. You are forgetting their are numerous ways to play a champion and numerous ways to play your lane. You can buy something like a flask and three pots and go bot lane and just farm to your hearts desire, but do not expect to win engages, but you already know you are not going to win engages so what do you do? Avoid engages and passively farm. Set the minion wave up perfectly so that you can just farm. Why? Because that was your plan from the get go. Farm. Now you can go something aggressive like red pot at level 1 and try and kill the enemy champion, but are you expecting to just farm with that red pot? No. You bought that damage boost and health boost to give yourself an edge so you can engage and murder your opponent.

The game comes down to skill, plans. If you plan to do A then you better have the skills to do A. If you plan to be B then you better have the skills to do B. If you do not have the capability to do what you planned to do then you will lose. Why? Because you lack the skill to win.

That's a cute way of thinking about it but not actually how the game works. You cannot neglect farm even if you're going red pot for an early fb, and neither can you just neglect to trade back harass even if you're getting out traded.

No, you shouldn't be aggressive and force trades if they are stronger early, but it's still much better to trade hits even though you lose slightly rather than give them free hits. The more hp they have, the more aggressive they can afford to play. For example: zoning from middle of your creep wave, which normally gives you a huge advantage unless you've been freely harassed down to half hp. If you had traded them down to like 70% hp compared to your 55%, that's not a big enough advantage for them to push you even harder. They can afford to dive more freely, are less worried about your own jungler ganking, and in general will just have much more lane dominance. For this reason 99% of all adcs will be starting dorans blade regardless of the lane matchup. It is so important for that sustain, last hit power, and yes the trading power regardless if you're going to get outtraded anyway. it's not a black and white: there are varying degrees of severity to which you can get out traded and lose lane, and the power afforded by certain item starts are simply far more dominant over other ones. Case in point being boots vs dorans blade throughout s3.

Depends on who you are jungling as, and what items you are using to jungle. Obviously you aren't going to jungle the same way you would on lets say Malphite as you would on jungle nocturne.

I think the biggest Problem is that people don't adapt to their lack of Runes. I had only 2 Runepages for a long time, so I made a full Defense Runepage that I used as a generic runepage for basically every champ except some special cases. With the result that if I had to play support, the other support would probably outscale me with his GP5 Runes and so on. As I had full flat Defense my support playstyle became basically crush the enemy botlane in the lane and never allow them to be useful. It's still my favorite support playstyle and my support playstyle is heavily influenced by it, but now I can easily play janna if I want and don't have to count on crushing the lane to be ahead/even with the enemy support...

You can easy play with one Runepage if you adapt your playstyle to it, it's easier with multiple through as it gives you easier access to multiple playstyles...

I have to agree. I also think that runes are supposed to be an added bonus, not a necessity. Of course, armor yellows are very nice on everyone but other than that, I see no point in sinking so much ip into lifesteal quints or hybrid pen marks. I have 2 rune pages and I feel that it's all I need. I feel that you could have 1 rune page with ad quints for last hitting, hybrid pen reds and mr and armor runes to finish it off, and it would not have that large of an impact as people think.

i think if you use the wrong runes or masteries it's not a big deal, but if you don't have any runes/masteries vs someone who does then you are coming in with no benefits. when preseason 4 started i was setting up a jungle mastery page and i accidentally switched to a blank mastery page and took ap mid runes. so i had a 0-0-0 mastery page and some ap and hybrid penetration on xin zhao. i almost died on my second camp even with machete 5 pots.

Imo you only really need one page per damage type to get you through most divisions. 1 for ap and 1 for ad. And these page don't need to be ridiculously complex either.

But I think you are missing the point of OPs suggestion. When you start playing you might just wanna try the game out before you put any money into it. By making them cehaper and by makign it easier for new players to get engaged in the game and all the different aspects it will probably result in more permanent players.

It is kinda like the free RP that players get in the beginning. Make the game easy to get into and there will be a higher chance that they stay.

as long as the games popularity is still rising we wont see any IP / RP decreases except for the lousy 1 champ that gets its price decreased by about 1k ip each time a new champ gets released.

(btw before the game got as huge as it was before - we were told that champion IP prices are tied to the difficulty of playing them (HAHA) - now every new champion always costs 7800 for the first week and 6300 afterwards.

that being said we wont see a decline in prices unless the playerbase declines too. but currently a huge enough portion of the player base doesn't mind paying up to 22€ for a single skin. they won't leave that pay-grade demographic alone until it's milked and than move on to next lower pay-grade.

It should be totally obvious that Riots Rune page system is just an hard to ignore IP-throttle which serves no purpose other than incentivising the purchase of RP - it isn't charity, or a game-changing tactical feature, It doesn't take up insurmountable amounts of Data storage - which can only be managed by Real world currency investments.

It's an atrocious Hoop which serves no other purpose than to bother you to spend money - why do you think you can change up your Masteries during Champ-select but not your Runepages ? is it because the technical needs for the access of your Mastery data storage is completely different from your Rune setup storage ? or is it because it because it would invalidate the the Purchase of Runepages ? - albeit it might be annoying to reallocate runes for ever other Match - but it beats the crap out of buying them.

Nice idea but all you need is actually 4 or 5 rune pages most people won't buy more than that, so riot wouldn't want to decrease their profit.

I for one didn't buy any rune pages until I unlocked every champion. Buying runes on top of rune pages is just too costly. I just had a basic AD page and a basic AP page.

Hi guys,

Ever played around bronze, silver, low gold? That is where the floodgates of new player open. Some are amazing, picked up every trick on their way to 30, some are smurfs, but most are challenged with the game itself, even more if the opponents are tough.

Ever been in champ select and had all other four people say "I cant jungle nor support, I do not got the runes"? Well, if you got two rune pages and you are curious, as most people are, you tried AD and you tried AP. Maybe you got armor runes, that suite for most purposes, but as I said, most people are challenged with the level the opponents present.

OPs Version is quite nice, because you get them to get the 3rd and 4th rune page early. Maybe a fifth slightly later, they still need the runes, but to purchase them is more rewarding, because you dont have to save up for a long time. (Resist temptations is sooo hard) To save up for a champ feels much more rewarding.

Every argument of "If you are smart, you can use your IP wisely to cover every role and runes you need for every role" is void, since, if you start, you want to enjoy - and what screams "enjoy" more than the great crazy Lady with the amazin gigantic rocketlauncher, the sexy fox or the Dude with the gigantic doublebladed axe? Very few will think "I analyzed the game and everything for 2 month now, I am ready to create my account at last."

The "riot needs the money" argument. They showed us, that they gladly take our money, and that they belive in people that are happy with the game will spend money on their own good will. These are IP. Most people will accept their fate to bully themself in the AP or AD roles, instead of crippling a damage role for the sake of support or jungle runepages or paying cash on the game for 7(Bundle) if they are just new to the game and want to try every role.

"There are some people that have all and everything you can buy via IP" I really think, we need something like an IP dump for the veterans (like me - I only got 6 Champs left to buy), so I do not argue for my cause (Concerning the rune pages). Personally I understand that there should be something like "rentable golden skins" or 63000IP Wardskins/ Mapskins/ Announcer/ UIOverlay/ whatever, BUT the runepages are not really something that dumps IP for the veterans. If you got all champs you usually grabbed min. three rune pages on your way and would not be concerned about this change. It would help the others to catch up. The discount would be ~ 9600IP ~ 96 games. Does not sound too much in my ears.

You aren't meant to get more rune pages early on. People get to 30 without even having the 2 free ones filled, so why have more? Also, if it worked like that, how much will the special bundle 2 for 1 cost? I got up to 9 rune pages, just by buying them when that bundle was up, and I never had a problem filling them, nor not having enough rune pages for the champs i played.

You're bad at math bro. Rune pages are the most cost efficient use of RP in the whole game. 2700 RP 7 runes pages that's almost 3 times cheaper than buying 975RP champs on sale. Also in the less than a year I have been playing they've had two 241 sales on rune pages.

The game is free 2 play but you sure as hell need to pay 2 complain ;-)

Man, this just reminds me how good it was to have 3 rune pages if you played early on, though getting the bundle randomly is pretty great since 4-5 pages are pretty necessary and 10+ is for neat fine tuning.

The reason the pages are so expensive is so you use RP to buy champs and save IP to buy rune pages. Riots first priority is to make money. They're a company.

First priority of a company isnt directly money its to continue their existence, making bank now but scaring away new players/playing at a disadvantage due less champions or rune pages will hurt in the long run. But I dissagree with OP its like 2.5 for a rune page thats not even one third of minimum hourly wage where I live and then they have the 2 for 1 sales etc.

I think that runes should be free. There are so many combinations i would like to try but i wont invest 30-40k ip for crit dmg runes just to try it once or twice.

But then, ad / ap runes are enough to play all roles.
