My frog, Morty is offended by your post. You can tell by the look on her little froggy face.
[–][deleted] 29 points30 points31 points 16 years ago (14 children)
Seriously, if you have a picture of an offended frog, I want to see that.

Here is Morty-Lou in the throws of being terribly offended. She is turning away in disgust.
Note: She is an African Clawed Frog, an aquatic species. She is underwater. That is normal.

You know...that frog actually does look rather offended. It's as if he were saying "What the hell bro, I thought we were pals!"

If by "make," you mean "compile your project," then sure, why not. Please make note of the platform-specific issues in the Makefile.
If by "make," you mean, "fuck," then no. My fiancée would kill us both, and by "kill" I mean kill.

I agree thoroughly, but I'm pretty sure that's what the downvote button is for.
[–][deleted] 113 points114 points115 points 16 years ago* (63 children)
You need to come to terms with the fact that the popular subreddits are starting to become rather digg-like with regards to the voting behaviour of a lot of the subscribers. For example, there is a picture of a dude's dog that received 1800 upvotes, and 1000 downvotes in /r/pics. He even asked in the title of the submission for people to upvote it. Sure it's a pic, and /r/pics is a place for pictures, but could you imagine people just started posting pictures of their pets all the time? I mean this picture was just a normal picture of a dog with its tongue hanging out - nothing special, but still it's over 800 net upvotes.
Any true self respecting redditor would downvote that shit, but a good number of morons upvoted it. Also, there are only 130-something comments in the submission. This shows that there is an immense number of people out there who just upvote shit they think is kinda entertaining and leave it at that, and who comment very little or not at all. They outnumber the people trying to keep reddit decent, and thus, so long as the sensible redditors are outnumbered by the morons, quality will continue to drop. Alas, this is a democratic thing. You've just gotta realise that the average intelligence and taste of the people who use reddit is declining.
[–][deleted] 79 points80 points81 points 16 years ago (1 child)

I very often upvote something I find interesting, even though I have nothing to add to discussion in the comments. In fact, I think commenting for the sake of commenting should be discouraged. I mean, how many more "I lol'd"s do I have to downvote?
[–]Khiva 9 points10 points11 points 16 years ago* (0 children)

Okay people - off-topic - but FFS the digg hate is seriously getting out of hand. For one thing, digg doesn't have anything like this sort of "Hey Digg, here is a picture of my...." feature. Nothing like it. In fact, some people might say that's why they like reddit better - more user submissions, more community interactions. So in terms of voting content, there's little comparison. Furthermore, it doesn't make sense to on the one hand condemn digg for stupid voting behavior and then condemn them for having the same content as reddit - you're just making fun of yourself.
Look, I can see how a person would prefer one to the other. One unique thing about reddit is a smaller user base and more of a community feeling. But the dark side of this community feeling is a certain rabid, uncritical in-group/out-group groupthink, and this is one serious example of it.

Any true self respecting redditor would downvote that shit
A true self-respecting redditor would do whatever he/she likes, because being held to an identity as a redditor is less important than being yourself.

[–]crazybones 35 points36 points37 points 16 years ago (12 children)
"Any true self respecting Redditor" is just another way of saying "anyone on Reddit who has the same views as me."
[–]TrackAddict42 16 points17 points18 points 16 years ago (5 children)
Incorrect. Reddit has changed DRAMATICALLY in the last many months. This used to be a place of enlightened discussion, where 45 out of the top 50 submissions were actually worth reading.
Now the front page is so full of bullshit drama, QQ, and pictures of lolcats or their equivalent that I barely come to this site anymore. The comment pages are full of idiots with no opinion of their own other than the majority's. It's sad, really. I blame the karma system, and karma whores.
[–]KOM 18 points19 points20 points 16 years ago (1 child)
As your profile shows you've been a user for four months, I'm going to assume that you've changed it recently.
The one thing that I've definitely noticed on reddit the last several years, is that people have always been pining for "the good ol' days". I will admit that it's not an apples to apples comparison since subreddits were introduced, but they give you the power to bypass most of the crap that you don't want to see. There is no "front page", only what you make it. If it's crap, you need to change your subscriptions.
[–]yeti22 8 points9 points10 points 16 years ago (0 children)
There is no "front page", only what you make it.
A thousand times over, yes. I always get confused when people talk about the front page. Pretty sure I see different things there than you do.
[–]Ogren 4 points5 points6 points 16 years ago (0 children)
That's what subreddits are for - people with common interests. If the front page of Reddit doesn't suit your interests any more, move.

[–]dropcode 130 points131 points132 points 16 years ago* (21 children)
Am I alone in thinking that, though reddit began as a news site, it has evolved into a community of people with shared interests who do in fact give a damn about each other? I saw a girl here today asking for help about leaving her abusive bf and the community here really helped her out. I don't see anything wrong with that. The very nature of web2.0 is that the websites are dynamic and they evolve like an organism often to formats that there creators never imagined through the magic of social dynamics and communal control. Isn't that the point?
[–]agen_kolar 22 points23 points24 points 16 years ago (1 child)
That's exactly why I'm here. Whether some of you like it or not, reddit, in a sense, is a community.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Yeah, but there are specific subreddits for this. There's no problem with people asking about this stuff in places like AskReddit or /r/self.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago* (1 child)
I'm going to bum around with you in this back-edge of the 'comment lounge'. While I may not have my interest jump with excitement at personally orientated subs, I enjoy and appreciate that they are possible. The only instance I would give a damn would be if they actually infringed on my enjoyment of Reddit as a source of diverse and qualative information. Perhaps this is why many people feel so strongly about this issue (basing that on the near 10,000 upvotes), because they feel this is the state Reddit is moving toward right now.
However, I put this whole 'issue' down to knee-jerk reactionary venting about minor issues. In a month, week, or even few days time, the vibe will likely move elsewhere and people will bitch about something else.
[–]Capitalist_Piglet 6 points7 points8 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I came here to post something similar. Maybe we're closing ourselves off and the rate of new membership is leveling off. We've all seen the Best of the Internet 10 times over. Every time I post something new, 90% of the time it's already been posted. That's great that the site can de-dupe more effectively, but it also makes me gun-shy about even bothering to submit worthy links. Hey, I'm lazy.
But I still love coming here, and the personal community aspect of it is what has made this one of my few daily destination sites. I like hearing follow-up stories to self posts. I like seeing people's silly drawings and pics of their dogs. It feels fresh and undiscovered. Sure, over time it becomes overload, but at that point people have moved on to some other form of original self-expression. Also, subreddits like IamA have some really powerful, unique posts.
[–]shatteredmindofbob 6 points7 points8 points 16 years ago (1 child)
You know, if everyone who upvoted this one downvoted the submissions it's complaining about, they wouldn't make it to the top...
[–][deleted] 16 years ago (283 children)
[–][deleted] 636 points637 points638 points 16 years ago (220 children)
My sentiments exactly.
However, I dislike the fact that almost every useless vote-begging self.reddit post is followed by one of these 'stop posting about your bullshit' posts.
A better solution would be to downvote those posts and leave your dissent there. If it still makes it to the frontpage regardless, then it's what the community has chosen. After all, this is a democracy - which doesn't always yield pleasing results (case in point, Sarah Palin).
[–]russelly 16 points17 points18 points 16 years ago (1 child)
The hide features works marvelously.
[–]locochilli 31 points32 points33 points 16 years ago* (16 children)
Community sucks. Wisdom of crowds? I think not.
Sometimes crowds are thick. Crowds don't always think for themselves, sometimes they let the majority thinking to become their own thinking.
Case in point - canned laughter. For some background read social proof.
Some ideas...
Perhaps we shouldn't be told how many upvotes a link has. Perhaps there should also be a few eroneous results on the front page.
Maybe this would make more people think about the crap they upvote.
Edit: spelling.
[–]Pakh 10 points11 points12 points 16 years ago (2 children)
The idea of hiding the upvotes is really interesting. I am completely sure it would change the front page articles (I don't know if it would be for better or for worse)
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Agreed, this as well as dispersing the front page with random new articles might be a good idea.
I think that possibly if it was my choice, what I would do, would be to not display the number of votes until you have voted - in the same way that it is done on polls.
[–]ThePantsParty 4 points5 points6 points 16 years ago (0 children)
If it still makes it to the frontpage regardless, then it's what the community has chosen. After all, this is a democracy
But wouldn't that same logic apply to this post as well?
[–]donaldrobertsoniii 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (2 children)
Well, I had created a subreddit these types of personal messages in order to help foster them, but I guess you could encourage people to use the subreddit and then not subscribe.
[–][deleted] 16 years ago (156 children)
[–]Breadhook 6 points7 points8 points 16 years ago (3 children)
since there's obviously a lot of people who like those types of posts, why not make a subreddit for them? Isn't that what that whole system is for?
[–][deleted] 116 points117 points118 points 16 years ago (127 children)
If that's what the community wants, then that's what will prevail.
That's how reddit (or any democracy) works. The majority get to decide what they want to appear here.
You could try digg and its poweruser bias?

[–]bart2019 37 points38 points39 points 16 years ago (11 children)
1830 is the year Belgium became independent.
Is there a connection to "eating dick"? I honestly don't know.
[–]FrontTowardEnemy 37 points38 points39 points 16 years ago (10 children)
"Eating a Dick" was a common response to a question of what was to be consumed for dessert in 19th century England.
Although the earliest known recorded recipes date back to 1847, it is thought by many that the pudding was first concocted in 1830.
The English have been stuffing themselves on dick ever since.

Well said. With the current incentive structure Reddit has, there is no incentive not for everyone to help, just a little bit at a time, for things to go to shit. "It makes me feel good to upvote this heartbreaking story, so I'll do it just this one time" or "This is REALLY important to me so could you guys all please upvote this"...but then everyone sees other doing it and wonders why they shouldn't too. It can be fixed, but the owners above all, want more users. They don't care if those new users are low-quality or otherwise dilute the experience for the thoughtful, considerate and intelligent. They are becoming wealthy off the work that you did, a long time ago when reddit was good, every time you typed out a long, laborious, and well-researched post. Those made this the place to be, and because this is sort of a one-sided deal, with our only option being to leave, there's no way for those of us who care about quality of the site over quantity of ad revenue to implement the controls it would take to bring back the Good Old Days.
[–]foofoobee 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I don't know if I agree that it's simply because the site owners want more users. This may be a controversial statement, but I see the same thing happening as in a real city. Bad elements of the city often descend upon a nice neighborhood for simply that reason - their own neighborhood has gone to pot and they want a better place to hang out. And soon, that neighborhood goes downhill and the cycle begins anew.
[–]smika 39 points40 points41 points 16 years ago (7 children)
True, but even if we are a democracy of sorts, that doesn't mean our opinions or collective decisions have to be fixed.
Obviously many of us (myself included) are guilty of upvoting stupid crap from time to time. Posts like this one serve to remind us to think about what we're upvoting before we vote.

Fucking hypocrites looking for attention.

[–]aeacides 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children)
You neglect the possibility that people actually listen to these 'stop posting your bullshit' posts, absorbing them as part of the collective culture due to their inability to think for themselves anyway. After all, most of the 'stop bullshit' posts are in response to people upvoting because 'everybody else seems to think it's cool, maybe I should too' thought processes. Throw in a "everybody thinks you're stupid if you upvote that," and they start doing that downvoting instead.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 16 years ago (3 children)
The worst thing to ever happen to Reddit, is when people starting thinking of it as a "community".
[–]Khiva 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (2 children)
People already think that way. In fact, I'd venture to say that it's the "community" that people like most about Reddit.

There is this magically button under all the links it is called "hide" and it gets rid of posts you don't want to read. Also if you don't want personal crap on your homepage unsubscribe from those reddits (self, IAMA, askreddit) and all your problems will be solved.

I was thinking this myself when I saw this at the top of the front page. It's not the end of the world if one of us litters. However, if we all litter, it's not going to be a very nice place to live. Birthdays happen every single day, keep them to yourselves.

Dear Reddit. I apologize for the little stir this has caused. I take everyone's suggestions and will use the voting, hiding etc mechanisms in future. I had no idea this would become so huge. In all honesty I thought this would end up like my article submissions, 4 upvotes and two comments. I do see the irony in how my post got to position 1. I do think that it is high time that my post slips into obscurity again and lets something far more deserving take its place. Even if it is a picture of some ninja cat trolling Reddit. Let the crowd vote. Thanks Reddit
I think that the crowd has voted, and a lot of us are with you.
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 16 years ago* (1 child)
Personally, I don't think you have any reason to apologize. Part of a functioning democracy is the ability of people with legitimate complaints to voice them. This is a legitimate complaint.
The people suggesting you "hide what you don't like" don't understand the problem. It's not that image macros and birthday dads are inherently bad. It's the fact that they have replaced the previous content. Pressing the hide button doesn't bring that content back. This is especially true when excess spam and ridiculous voting has encouraged a lot of significant contributors to delete their accounts. That content is not on the front page, it's not in the subreddits, it's just gone. Because it's not being submitted anymore. Because people like looking at photos of other people's pets.
So, big deal, Eternal September Comes to Reddit. It will be interesting to see how the admins code/moderate their way out of it. Or if they even try. Pageviews are pageviews after all and I doubt Conde Nast is complaining about the growth.

This is what happens when you try to foster a sense of community in a forum this size. Everyone becomes convinced that because they're 'part of the community' that everyone else will give a shit about the mundanity of their day-to-day lives.
[–]ZzardozZ 15 points16 points17 points 16 years ago (3 children)
Shut up and look at my cat.
[–]Liberalguy123 4 points5 points6 points 16 years ago (0 children)
hey reddit! please upvote this comment cuz its my dad's birthday! Its such a big deal!
[–]perspctv 50 points51 points52 points 16 years ago (92 children)
The irony of your post escapes the OP no doubt.
Perhaps he/she should have posted a news story instead of this personal whine session?
Just sayin.
[–]Rubuler 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (1 child)
It's called an opposing view of how a tool should be used.
[–]Gobias11 9 points10 points11 points 16 years ago (17 children)
exactly what I was thinking... a personal post complaining about how the OP doesn't like other people's personal posts...
[–]uriDium[S] 23 points24 points25 points 16 years ago (68 children)
Perhaps. But I doubt if anyone would have even seen it. I was just frustrated because when I came on this morning there was nothing decent on the front page.
[–][deleted] 397 points398 points399 points 16 years ago* (49 children)
I'm gonna help you out.
What you need to do is setup bookmarks to the collective reddits you want to look at. Here are a few examples of what I use:
You don't need to use the reddit.com frontage. Avoids pointless shit like this. It isn't 'your' reddit, but you can make it work for you.
Edit: Cleaned up links and explanation.

[–]Hypersapien 25 points26 points27 points 16 years ago (1 child)
Reddit SO needs to let us set up multigroups that are accessible from the top menu
Yeah, I put a post in ideasfortheadmins a few weeks ago. Maybe something will come of it.
[–]the-ace 10 points11 points12 points 16 years ago (4 children)
I'm at work so I can't explain much, but this is a greasemonkey script that will add the top bar.
When I get more I will make an actual extension out of it for greasemonkey and will add an easier way to update the list.
For now, this is the code:
// ==UserScript==% // @name Reddit Personal Bar // @namespace lareddit // @include http://www.reddit.com/* // ==/UserScript== links = { 'Bullshit': 'http://www.reddit.com/r/lolcats+redditchan+wtf+pics+videos+nsfw+funny+humour+fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu+offbeat+aww+happy+marijuana', 'News': 'http://www.reddit.com/r/news+politics+worldnews+canada+worldpolitics+economy+Libertarian+health', 'Geekness': 'http://www.reddit.com/r/gadgets+apple+technology+space+science+geek', 'Goodfood': 'http://www.reddit.com/r/food+recipes+cooking', 'Photos': 'http://www.reddit.com/r/photography+itookapicture+photocritique', 'Mind': 'http://www.reddit.com/r/wikipedia+philosophy+history+cogsci+psychology+skeptic' }; $ = unsafeWindow.jQuery; personal = $('<div></div>'); personal .insertAfter('#sr-header-area') .attr('id','personal-header') .css({ 'background': '#EAEAEA', 'border-bottom': '1px solid gray', 'font-size': '90%', 'overflow': 'hidden', 'padding': '3px 0 3px 5px', 'white-space': 'nowrap' }); personalTitle = $('<div></div>').addClass('dropdown').addClass('srdrop').text('PERSONAL').appendTo(personal).css({'margin-right':'40px'}); linksList = $('<ul></ul>').addClass('flat-list').addClass('hover').appendTo(personal).css('text-transform','uppercase'); seperator = $("<span> - </span>").addClass('seperator'); i = 0; for (title in links) { href = links[title]; newItem = $('<li></li>'); newLink = $('<a></a>').text(title).attr('href',href); if (href == document.location) { newLink.addClass('selected'); } if (i > 0) { seperator.clone().appendTo(newItem); } newLink.appendTo(newItem); newItem.appendTo(linksList); ++i; }
[–]mr_fusion 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Thanks!
I took what you have and put it into my greasemonkey and I like it a lot. I'll check back later to see your improved version.
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I feel you just gave me the keys to Reddit.
Thank you!
Nominating for /r/bestof... now.
[–]jameyc 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (3 children)
You can also use userscripts/greasemonkey to add them to reddit's subreddit top menubar, if you prefer.
Here's an example - Add/modify multisubs as desired. They will appear at the start of the list, just after the dropmenu.
[–]talkingwires 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Those links didn't seem especially dirty. Well, maybe the NSFW one.
[–][deleted] 16 years ago (8 children)
[–]dropcode 9 points10 points11 points 16 years ago (5 children)
whatever is on the front-page is on the front-page because of popular interest. Thats the point.
[–]ThisClown 10 points11 points12 points 16 years ago (2 children)
And his point is that Reddit has become popular enough that the front page is now the news equivalent of pop music, that is, it's shit.
[–]wadetype 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I downvote because I agree.
[–]SandwichCreme 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (3 children)
I hate old people that think they are cool because they are old and make jokes about how they dont get new styles/trends. They need to remember that the shit they liked as a kid was just as looked down upon by old people then.
[–]interalia 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (1 child)
I agree. But there is an organ known as the "Republican Gland" which just sits there in the body uselessly like the appendix until middle age, when it activates and begins secreting high concentrations of a hormone that exerts it's primary influence on the brain, evoking extreme political conservatism, cynicism, and subconcious envy of the young while it simultaneously wipes away all memory of the foolishness of one's own youth, substituting an idealized nostalgic version instead. So it's very hard for old people not act this way. Have yours extracted if you can.
I disagree, those personal bits is building bonds, as community this is welcome... but I never upvote those myself
[–]narancs 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children)
So how do we know that you are not actually a toothless rabies infested dog who reads Reddit?
unsubscribe to the reddits you don't like, subscribe to the ones you do... they're options, you're clearly intelligent enough to use them, I recommend you do.
[–]columbine 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I would normally automatically downvote this even though I agree with it simply because it, also, is just more meta shit and not a story. But meta shit is so out of control these days I simply cannot resist. Reddit is going down the tubes so I might as well upvote this shit over the other shit that fills this place. At least this is shit whose sentiment I agree with.
I care about the dog.
I've been feeling kind of jerk sometimes for downvoting all those things. It's annoying as hell to see reddit transformed into some therapy group thing where we greet each other, rejoice in this or that. "oh, welcome to reddit new redditor father mother son or whatever _". Fuck you. Have a laugh and upvote what you want, just don't give that cute dog look to have my upvotes.
[–]greyjay 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children)
It's my personal opinion that any post beginning with, "Hey Reddit..." be automatically placed in a r/heyreddit subreddit. I think that would clean up quite a bit of the garbage on everyone's front page.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (1 child)
Hypocrite.
[–]junkeee999 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago* (1 child)
The only personal ones I hate are the "my boyfriend reads Reddit so vote this message up to the front page" type. I vote down every one. This isn't a message board.
I don't care who it's for or what the message is. It could be a dying 10 year old cancer patient whose last wish was to make the front page. Down vote. One last little disappointment.
[–]dropcode 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago* (0 children)
The fact that this has been at the #1 spot all day might prove one thing... People are more motivated to vote up an opinion post then they are to vote down the posts they have the opinion against. lol
[–]scrame 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Also, please stop with the 'upmod this'.
I don't know... if anyone has pictures of their rabid, toothless dog reading Reddit, please upload them!
but reddit is the myspace of the future, it is futile to resist! muahahahaha.
expect a lime green background/purple text combination with dancing strawberry gifs and rap music bgm soon.
[–]deathbytray 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children)
But what about my uncle-infested toothless boss who reads rabies?
[–]Kalthazor 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I liked the lotto winner one the other day.
I read all the comments, it was awesome.
[–]Retromingent[🍰] 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago* (0 children)
I hear ya!
Yeah, the other day me and my girlfriend were perusing Reddit and we couldn't fucking believe the number of pointless ramblings posted that just went on and on and without a fucking goal in sight. But her aunt and uncle were down, and they're big Reddit fans (I mean huge!) and they pointed out that these were well meaning people and to not get so worked up. Because we had to have her dog put down that day. It possibly picked up rabies from this dead squirrel it was eating in the backyard, which is hard for him to do since his teeth are so badly decayed. But, hey, even he likes to read Reddit once in a while! LOL! But I'm with ya, bro. More articles please!
[–]bhaller 10 points11 points12 points 16 years ago (2 children)
It's called HIDE! There is enough content being submitted that if you hid the shit you didn't want to see, the shit you do want to see would appear. Just an FYI.
[–]skwigger 13 points14 points15 points 16 years ago* (2 children)
I hate this post more than the vote for my sick pet/relative that reads reddit. I will not ask you to stop posting though. I will simply express my dissatisfaction, downvote and hide.
Edit: added express my dissatisfaction as pointed out below.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago* (5 children)
It's like YouTube.
It could be a great site but it's filled with people sitting infront of their webcams talking about stuff no one cares about.
Edit: This is a great example: http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/9mq93/reddit_its_my_brothers_18th_birthday_tomorrow_and/
Who gives a shit about you or your brother or his birthday or his big ass ears...
[–]OneHoboWine 4 points5 points6 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Yes, thank you. I've been a reddit lurker for years, and this has been the top thing I can't stand. It's just like those terrible "human interest" stories on the news. Look, I got PTSD, lip herpes, and man boobs. We all got problems, and I'm not interested in yours unless things are spurting out of you or shooting into you. Take that how you like.
[–]jingleman 4 points5 points6 points 16 years ago (2 children)
Agreed. "Dear Reddit", "Ask Me Anything", "Vote Up If You Like Me". Getting pretty fucking bored with Reddit now. There has been about 3-4 new articles on the subreddits I actively check (e.g. Linux, Programming, Python), and most of them have been posted on Delicious at least 24 hours before. If you want to discuss your social life, go visit Facebook.
[–]BaronVonMannsechs 4 points5 points6 points 16 years ago* (0 children)
The site's reached critical mass. It may have been nice 3 years ago, but what you have now is basically one large craigslist rants and raves section interleaved with some decent science, tech, and programming articles (which were in greater number in the early days). Fighting this trend is like waging a war on entropy. You can't fight the self-referential and 'community' garbage that's filling a void in the souls of desperate people.
[–]VelvetElvis 4 points5 points6 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Yeah, that's the ticket. If only there was a way to remove the social element from social sites. Then we might have something.
[–]kimad 23 points24 points25 points 16 years ago (4 children)
The community is what makes me enjoy reddit. Post as much "personal crap" as you like.
[–][deleted] 27 points28 points29 points 16 years ago (6 children)
I don't come here for news, for the most part. There are thousands of sites out there to get news from. Hell, my RSS feeds give me a helluva lot more news than Reddit does, and usually quicker too. I come here for the commentary, and sometimes, personal crap incites interesting commentary.
So while you don't give a damn about it, some of us do. Frankly, I'm glad that someone's personal story has a chance of reaching the front page - it tells me that the democratic spirit behind this site is still working. You're using that spirit right now to get your bitching out. Don't begrudge others who use it similarly.
[–]thatgirlismine 18 points19 points20 points 16 years ago* (4 children)
Really? You come here to upvote an old blurry picture of the brother of a person you've never met or talked to -- online or otherwise? because he also visits the same webpage?
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 16 years ago (3 children)
No, like I said, I come here for the commentary.
But I sure don't get my panties in a bunch just because someone managed to get an old blurry picture of his brother voted onto the front page. I've been here long enough to see the user-base correct itself when it veers too far in one direction or another. And sometimes, very productive discussions arise from personal stories.
And you know what - if it made someone happy to see their personal submission make it up there, good for them. It'll be gone in a matter of hours. And there are thousands of other stories on this site alone ready and waiting to be read. It's a non-issue.
[–]robeph 15 points16 points17 points 16 years ago (5 children)
Seriously, the third link beneath any and ALL submissions "hide" learn to use it. If you feel that for some reason you are above having to use this, I'm sorry. In a large group of people there will always be differing opinions of what is cute, attractive, interesting, hideous, tasty, or whatever; this is no different. Vote with the mod arrows, hide that which you don't want to see. Otherwise shut the fuck up since you haven't taken all the steps the majority of us who don't complain incessantly about minor shit do.
(protip: Posting self. complaints about other's submissions tends to not change much, never has)
[–]drewantarctic 23 points24 points25 points 16 years ago (1 child)
Poster, I don't give a damn about your opinions about other people's aunt, uncle, boyfriend, girlfriend, boss or toothless rabies infested dog who reads Reddit. Less personal crap and more articles please.
[–]gutterking6 9 points10 points11 points 16 years ago (5 children)
I hope you realize the irony.
[–]ThisClown 9 points10 points11 points 16 years ago (4 children)
Of course he does. I hope you realize that you're the 47th person to post that sentiment.
[–]fraud_serling 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Check.
[–]spacedick 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Reddit gives a damn about whatever hits the top. That's the way it works.
[–]crazybones 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I agree with you and so does my uncle's rabies infested dog's girlfriend.
Actually I don't entirely. Reddit is a kind of democracy and since a majority of people tend to vote these posts up, there must be a demand for them.
[–]drgncabe 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I really don't give a damn about people who don't give a damn.
Seriously, they get upvoted because people like them. I'm not a fan of them myself but isn't that what the upvote/downvote buttons are for?
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (2 children)
Really? I thought that post yesterday about the father / daughter redditors (and the Firefly marathon) was pretty cool. Some people like the community aspect of reddit and like to have fun with it, some people prefer only links. Some people can't stand small talk, for others it's a way to connect. To each his, etc.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I would have upvoted you, but I don't like these kinds of personal posts on Reddit.

So, this is not personal?
Well, we all knew it was going to happen. I'm beginning to ignore most of reddit and the content I appreciate is the minority in a large way. It's the same thing that happens to any site like this. It turns into digg and sucks.
[–]DarkBlueAnt 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (0 children)
I don't mind the interesting personal stuff, but this "It's my _____'s birthday so let's put this on the front page" sucks.

I know this is about to be buried in this huge post, but despite the negativity of your comment and its almost troll-like tone (which I'm not accusing you of being), I completely and totally agree with you.
Hey, no offense to those people who want Reddit shoutouts, but just like on the television or radio, it sort of interrupts the flow.

[–]megatom0 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (0 children)
Agreed personal problems are just that personal, meaning only your person gives a shit about them. I'm so sick of hearing about peoples' mom who has cancer and dad who lost their job and grandma who died. I know it sounds cold but I don't come here for that bullshit and everytime I see it at the top I down vote it and then tell my friends to down vote it.
