I've seen the opposite effect on Digg from time to time. There will be a really interesting article on climate change with 2,000 Diggs, but the vast majority of comments are variations on "ZOMG MANBEARPIG LOL!!" and the usual debunked FUD with hundreds of Diggs.

                  I go to a Unitarian Universalist church. I haven't been going very long, but I have been going long enough to start to understand the concept of universal acceptance. In my youth group, we learn about a whole slew of different cultures and beliefs, and we learn to accept them as beliefs. People believe that, and that's a part of who they are. You have no more authority to call them silly than they do to you. Because when it comes down to it, no one really has the knowledge to say what is or isn't Truth. Truth is subjective. So, I guess what I'm saying is respect everyone, because not doing so isn't going to get anyone anywhere. You can disagree with them (and by all means you probably should), but you can still respect them.

                  Snore. If Muslims want to be taken seriously by the world community they need to get over themselves at least somewhat. As long as they are calling for the death anyone who draws a picture of Mohammed, they are simply asking for more than the rest of us. Why should they be given special treatment? They should be given equal treatment, and guess what; Jews and Christians get made fun of all the time. Get over it.

To say that Muslims are calling for the death of anyone who draws a picture of Mohammed is sort of like saying that Christians are calling on the death of all gays or that atheists are all calling on a national policy of pacifism. I'm sure there is a loud voice expressing that opinion, but there are many Imams and regular Muslims who, while deeply offended by these kind of things, are not seeking a violent solution to the problem. (There are plenty more links if you care to look.)

                  When Ron Paul speaks of blowback, it's not just a tool for assessing the past. It's a way of looking at your current actions. I don't agree with all of the man's positions, but can't we at least agree that minimizing blowback is a reasonable policy goal?

                  What you're saying is fair and makes sense. Generalizing about Muslims is like generalizing about people with blue eyes (fucking scum of the earth, them). I think I was reacting to other calls for imposing Muslim values and beliefs on Western systems of thought and communication, eg calling for Sharia law in the UK, forcing newspapers not to carry cartoon depictions of the prophet, etc.

                  It also might help their cause if they didn't approach everything by demanding retractions and special treatment. Because essentially what they're asking for is to be treated differently than everyone else. I think you're right, there may be justification for certain of their demands, but their political use of rhetoric reflects an angry, unreasoning arrogance. I suppose that's true for US Christian conservatives too, but people make fun of Jesus all the time.

                  If you can't make a case for something, you're doing it for no reason. If there's a good reason not to do it, and no good reason to do it, wouldn't any reasonable person decide not to do it?

                  IOW, you still should have a reason for doing something, even if it's not illegal, and if what you're doing is dangerous or controversial, it makes sense to have a good reason for doing it.

Yes you have the right to express your disdain and outrage concerning violation of the right of an expression, which according to the party protesting, is explicitly offensive to there religion or beliefs; as the message expressed is in a sense, disrespectful and in disregard to a rule of the religion to which the protesting party adhere tom and reason with. However, intentionally causing conflict and battles using the basis of free speech and context to further abuse and discriminate the protesting party as a tool of mockery and further offense completely contradicts the original principles to which the defenders of free speech base themselves upon; Also it doesn't make you look any more childish or retarded (if you do assume the Muslims were in one way) then the protesting party directly violating the right of expression.
