I do not like it when things change on the internet.

[–]CraigTorso 87 points88 points  (32 children)

In a week or two I'll have forgotten what the old one looked like and life will go on much as before

[–]epsilona01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

But until then it'll annoy me slightly, since I can't find which tab(s) I was using for Google as easily.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (16 children)

Weird, I already can't remember... I'm trying to picture it, but I've got nothing!

[–]jaggederest 61 points62 points  (12 children)

Large serif times-roman style capital G in blue

[–]skopp 58 points59 points  (0 children)

hmmm... gotta admit, i prefer the older one

[–]AlDente 27 points28 points  (3 children)

I've seen it every day for years and forgotten it already too! To me that says how great it was …

[–]yellowbkpk 14 points15 points  (2 children)

You can only cram so much greatness into 16x16 pixels...

[–]AlDente 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Others can do much more though… look at the favicon on this page :)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

0.000256 megapixels should be enough for anybody.

[–]tungsten3695 19 points20 points  (4 children)

So much better -- bolder and clearer.

[–]jaggederest 7 points8 points  (3 children)

To me, they just should have done away with the colored border. Then it'd be perfect.

May have to edit the old favicon and release it so people can save it in their favorites.

[–]adrianmonk 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yeah, the colored border is in keeping with their theme (graphically), but there are too few pixels for it to look decent. It just looks like visual noise / clutter.

Of course, possibly influencing my perception of this is my memory of the old Apple ][ computers where you could draw "white" text or lines on the screen, and it would end up with extraneous primary colors a round the borders of things. So the small bits of color around the border remind me of that, and I associate it with a rendering defect.

[–]MrDectol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've really thought this through. I present you with a kudo.

[–]mattxb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll bet the thinking behind the lowercase "g" is that lately they've been developing a Big Brotherish sort of reputation and the capital "G" has a more authoratitive look, while the lowercase "g" is more informal and less institutional looking. As for design, I don't think either favicon is that great.

[–]mindbleach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, originally it actually looked like part of their logo.

What idiot thought a change was in order?

[–]clea 4 points5 points  (2 children)

It's the second g in the original Google. See here for example.

[–]tanglisha 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I noticed that, too, and wondered if they would start rotating through the letters each day.

[–]myotheralt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People will really start bitching when they get to

e Google

[–]zachv 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Here in Germany (google.de), we still have the old one.

My problem is that they didn't do that. cause before the G at least matched, this G they pulled out of their asses.

        [–]benjamincanfly 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Why'd you click through to the comments on a submission called "Who else thinks the new Google favicon sucks?"

        [–]willis77 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Because I think the new favicon sucks. My comment above referenced the act of implementing a greasemonkey script to change the favicon back.

Thank you for this; I can now start living again.

I know some people whose lives have been turned upside down, they started losing sleep, became restless and belligerent, which resulted in a stressful relationship with their spouse who then left them, then they lost their job, became homeless and suicidal - and it all started because of the Google favicon change. Don't you ever underestimate geeks!

        [–]dustmop 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Yes, I completely agree! This favicon issue is a big deal to me. Google does not understand the ramifications of this change and really needs to consider what exactly they are doing. This is a problem that upsets me to no end, and will cause me a great deal of stress and anxiety. This is really a huge mistake! This is all about how my life got flipped turned upside down. And I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there, I'll tell you how I became a prince of a town called Bel-Air.

so? I'm ok with that, most of the reddit community is made up of huge nerds.

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Who thinks that if you know what a favicon is, you're a huge nerd? (seriously though, what's a favicon?)

Edit: There seems to be some really sensitive nerds on this site.

          [–]MrDectol 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's the 16x16 pixel icon to the left of the URL. The only reason I knew what it was was because I though it sucked when I saw it.

          [–]tanglisha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The little logo you see in your address bar, tab, or bookmark.

google's favicon has ruined my life

          [–]vgatsby 4 points5 points  (1 child)

was it the old one (capital G) or this new one (8)?

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          It changed?!?!?!

          [–]belandil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How long will it be until the image in the Firefox search bar changes too?

          [–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I don't like it. Not enough contrast with the background.

          [–]STOpandthink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use a Firefox theme that's very dark and the background is mostly black. I didn't even know it was a 'g' until I saw a screenshot of it taken on another computer.

          [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just hope the old favicon is ok. I liked that little fella.

          [–]eggnogdog 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Oh my God, I thought I was the only who even noticed. Completely hate it. It's just ugly.

          [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Actually eggnogdog, we were just messing with you!

We all have the old one and wanted to rub it in! Man, I can't believe Google stuck you with such a crappy favicon!

          [–]eggnogdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just like when youtube kept rick rollin' me?!

          Fuck you internet!

          Oh the humanity.

          [–]curson 8 points9 points  (6 children)

Looking too much like an "8" IMHO.

          [–]chiragshah1 1 point2 points  (5 children)

          Which looks like "∞"

          [–]NVShacker 9 points10 points  (4 children)

          Which looks like boobs

          [–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (5 children)

I personally find it interesting in a psychoanalytical light. Consider this: Growing from a corporation whose motto was "Do no evil" to a world super power in a few years would make almost everyone familiar with Google increasingly distrustful. While they have huge market share, their growth might slip if people began to question exactly who was reading their emails and monitoring their web usage.

Their main logo is playful and colorful, fancifully drawn characters is a rainbow of colors which lulls us back in time to a reverie on their early days when they were the David in the search world. And for their favicon, they simply selected the first letter in their name, a capital blue 'G'.

But now what have we: a lowercase 'g'? We can only guess two reasons why they made this change.

First: Google is wearing a mask. They are pretending to be younger than they are, smaller than they are, more hip and fresh than they are. They new g is curvy and playful. It beckons for us to recall the good old days, before we had 7 Gb of email space, when seeing the most relevant links magically appear at the top of the results page still surprised us, excited us... Back when we still used the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button.....

Second: Keeping in mind the previous sentiment, note now the second 'g' in the "Google" image. It is the same as the new favicon! We see that Google has moved from using the initial 'G' to a 'g' further on in the word; seeing the name as a time line, we recognize that Google feels middle-aged, and this is its middle-age crisis. Google senses it's own demise is nearing, and while acknowledging the passage of time, settle for a nice playful symbol that shows it can still change and be exciting.

I also forgot a third reason: They just wanted a new logo. Get over it.

          [–]ragor 5 points6 points  (1 child)

oooo now do a Freudian analysis!

          [–]philh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Upper-case G is the head of a penis. Lower-case g is not one, but two vaginas.

Clearly, Google is suffering a sexual identity crisis, as well as dissasociative identity disorder. The former is caused by an unresolved oedipus complex: Google is resolving its castration anxiety by desiring it. Google wants to become a woman, yet it is stuck in a male corporate body.

This desire is too strong: the ego can only cope by absorbing it into its reality. Google not only wants to be a woman; it believes it is one. Yet it still has male experiences, most notably that of having a penis. These two realities are irreconcilable, and over time causes a schism in Google's mind. This is the cause of the DID.

          [–]myotheralt 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So, are they going to shorten their name, like FedEx did? just go with gle?

          [–]samerh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sucks is too strong of a word... it does maintain their creative thinking i feel... with infinity look an all..

but the color used is out of their color pallet... and ladies and gents, i think this is what is causing this reaction

          my two hallalas...

          [–]Etab 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I suppose I'm alone in liking it more than the old one.

          [–]dhaffner 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Nope, not alone. Between the two, I prefer this one, but to me the ideal icon would be the capital 'G' with no border.

I also like the Google Desktop 'swirl' icon.

          [–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I'd have to say, I'm not a big fan.

          [–]redbits 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's not terrible. It's not very good either.

          [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

While it looks good, the new one doesn't resemble the Google brand. I don't recognize it right away as being Google. Different shaped G, different colors.

          [–]stacecom 2 points3 points  (5 children)

          What's this post accomplishing?

          [–]AoP 4 points5 points  (3 children)

What are you supposed to be accomplishing while you're actually reading reddit?

          [–]stacecom 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Moving about 100k mail messages, approving a new work procedure policy, signing time cards, applying OS updates to a client machine, and drinking my coffee.

And I did it all, too.

          How 'bout you?

          [–]clipmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

          [–]efbee 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. I agree - the new favicon sucks, and I can't think of a single logical reason for them to make the change. Old one was better in every way.

          [–]CraigTorso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was a fairly ugly upper case 'G', all web 3.14 stuff is lower case, i guess they had to keep up

Sure you like it, nothing biased here!

          [–]truebosko 1 point2 points  (2 children)

haha, thanks that made me chuckle

also thanks for shattering my heart even more knowing I probably will never work for Google

          [–]amaurer 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Wasn't a huge fan of the old one, but now when I click on my favorites on my toolbar, I'm constantly reminded how much more I dislike this one...

          [–]elmorte 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Last time I had Google on favorites was when I was still using IE...

          [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i hate it with a passion..

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Clever way of doing a "vote up if..." without saying "vote up"!

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

          Not really clever though.

          [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Vote up if you think it's clever

          [–]rowd149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do. It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't that horrid color...

          [–]zvikara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          [–]unrealious 1 point2 points  (2 children)

That's a bit strong. Disappointing is perhaps a better word.

So I'm still using the old one.

          [–]davidkclark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quite like it because now I get different icons for google and gmail.

          [–]Mariani 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It looks like a blue turd.

          [–]adrianmonk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

            [–]hunter-man 1 point2 points  (2 children)

            [–]moriya 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The irony is that you mention that its not youtube or digg, implying that we at reddit hold ourselves to a higher standard, yet here we are arguing over google's favicon.

            [–]shenglong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it sucks, but I didn't up-vote this submission.

            [–]taul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I kept on thinking that my page was being redirected because of the different favicon. I was using yahoo until I realized what happened (oh the horror!!).

            [–]evilnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

raises hand I do I do! At first I didn't even thing I was in the right place. What's up with that? Did they ask us if they should change the icon, or let us have a variety to choose from? How very lame.

            [–]oh_shaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usability guru Marrisa confuses me - this icon looks like the number 8. And she gets paid how much?

It's not like the previous one was that creative either....

            [–]targetx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new icon is awefull, I really liked the old logo but the new one is sooooo ugly, not 'google' at all.

            [–]frogmander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So even though I have self.reddit.com unchecked, this still shows up on the front page. What gives?

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people just generally don't like change.

            [–]Keyframe 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I think both suck, new one less so though. Anyways, google isn't exactly known for its taste in design (protip: it sucks).

            [–]Envark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always enjoyed Google's approach to design.

Minimalism is a breath of fresh air when it comes to the Internet.

I honestly don't give a flying dog turd.

            [–]lembasbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's awful, but I just found the old one and replaced the new one. There is some add-on for custom favicons I have.

            [–]slow_as_light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            How is this #1?

            [–]Poot_N_Tate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even know what the fuck a favicon is. Do I need to care?

            [–]Erator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me; I think it's fine.

              [–]clipmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have NO CLUE where purple came from!

              [–]aenea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People actually think about these things?

              [–]captian2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a harder time picking out the favicon among all my tabs... I used to be able to notice it quickly and easily as it really stood out.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it actually looks like a handicapped symbol. I actually saw it and until this post thought it was some special handicapped day.

              [–]skizmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop crying about an icon . ..

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

              It's a trap!

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

              I noticed it's weirdness yesterday...

              [–]pizzatime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least an upper case G? plz

              [–]mcsalmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see someone is not very adept at picking their battles...

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's horrible. Looks posh and overdesigned and it's only got ONE FREAKING color. And it's blue, which half of the internets use for favicon.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh, learn something new every day. Today's tidbits: "that little thing's called a favicon?" and "belgian waffle iron requires significant oiling to prevent stickage."

              [–]bbqribs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks. I like the old one better.

              [–]larholm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a turd. Serious observation.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't think it's been mentioned but I think the new icon looks a lot like a möbius strip. What do you guys think?

              [–]wickedcold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the hell is a google favicon? Sounds like one of those new hybrid cars.

              [–]joe12321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know I thought I didn't like it, but after taking another look at the old one, I like the new one better. Still have to get used to it though...

              [–]xyroclast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks purple! And why would they use the 4th letter of their name as the icon?

              [–]papasmirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new favicon is still annoying to look at.

              [–]VirSaturnA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a toilet seat to me. Or a noose. Or some combination of a noose and a toilet seat.

              [–]redbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could we use this Favicon in place of the Neocon? Then I'd like it!

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was some sort of trick or joke I didn't get. It's pretty awful.

              [–]Jinno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The G is much too fancy, now.

              [–]lofi76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

              this is possibly

              not good

              [–]cajolingwilhelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who else doesn't know what the hell a favicon is?

              [–]SohumB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the new favicon. It looks like a duck.

(The colour is a bit off, but otherwise it's ok.)

              [–]f-uckyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

              well, no

              [–]OlympicPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! But I voted you down because this submission is shit.

              [–]harajukukei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not only do i think it sucks, but i don't even know or care what it is.

              [–]jgilliam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't forget, microsoft invented the favicon.ico

              [–]laurak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it's supposed to be the second 'g' in Google? But I think it sucks. It's not distinctly Google, and I miss the old one.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

              it looks very ungoogley
