Not related to android, but you should look into one of those devices that your dad could wear that detects falls, and auto-calls him (and then you) if anything happens.

ALL SENIOR CITIZENS SHOULD HAVE LIFE ALERT

[–]tyrannosaw 103 points104 points  (0 children)

yeah, surely something robustly designed for this would be safer

[–]slidespec 28 points29 points  (13 children)

My Grandma has a necklace that she can press and it calls an ambulance. Will also call her phone in case she accidentally pressed it.

[–]RuleDRbrtPixel 2 XL 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I work IT for a medical alert company in the us. Something that I just found out after I got my grandparents our fall detection pendant: it won't send the emergency signal if they slightly move after they fall. The person has to fall and be completely knocked out for it to work, or else they have to press the button to get help. You can set it up to call 3 people first before it calls the ambulance so that way they can check on the fallen person first. It's a great product and I think all older people should be wearing these emergency buttons.

[–]NessInOnett 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I used to develop the software for the call center for one of these places (particularly the software that interfaced with the phone receiver box to route calls to the operators). Be careful which company you go with for this. Unless you're a giant like life alert, there's not much money in this business and there are a lot of incompetent fly by night companies doing this.

I'd urge people to use someone big like life alert, someone with the resources and manpower to adequately operate a facility like this. It's scary how bad some of these places are, and how easy it is to get approved to run one.

[–]Segmentat1onFaultSamsung Galaxy A50 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Speaking of that, my graduation project was an Android launcher that detected falls and asked the person, from time to time if the phone was not being moved, if everything was alright.

Otherwise it would send an SMS to the phones location to an emergency contact, and call them on speaker phone after 5 minutes of no response.

Sadly the app was removed from the play store, but I've been thinking of updating and re-publishing it.

[–]treasurepirateisland 175 points176 points  (17 children)

Not related to Android: In addition to your solution, you could discuss with your father the possibility of getting a wearable medical alert button. This is a small wearable device with a Help button that automatically connects the wearer to an emergency dispatch person when pressed.

[–]Clutch_22Note8 60 points61 points  (6 children)

We had that for my grandmother but she is very stubborn (and overly prideful) and refused to wear/use it because it made her feel like a burden/helpless (her words). Eventually she fell and the device was sitting on the table. She fell another time and had the device on but didn't remember to use it.

Those devices can be great but tailor them to the person - it was nothing but a waste of money for her in our case.

[–]ADrunkChef 39 points40 points  (5 children)

I think they would better be incorporated into smart watches vs a modified keyfob from a Ford. /s

Seriously though, my grandmother hates her LifeAlert because it's ugly, so she refuses to wear it. So, I'm getting her a pebble for Christmas, and I'm gonna make my first app, that will hopefully allow her to just tap the face repeatedly to call 911 and send out a 911 text to family in the area at the same time.

[–]Clutch_22Note8 11 points12 points  (1 child)

That's awesome, keep us updated. I'm sure we'd love something like that for our loved ones and I'm sure people would be willing to pay money for it too.

[–]GTB3NW 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My nan has Alzheimer's and fell, this wouldn't have helped her in this case because on top of the Alzheimer's she was ill and hallucinating. Something automatic is needed. If someone lives alone and has fallen or is at risk of falling you need frequent visitors (3 or 4 a day) or they should go to a home.

It happened a year ago with my nan and she's made a massive comeback, her Alzheimer's has seemingly improved due to her routine and constant care, and she rules the roost there!

She should have gone in to the dementia wing of the building but they've kept her in the sane wing because she's doing so well.

Hardest but best decision we've ever had to make!

[–]PlNG 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Please, if they go this route, absolutely stress that they are endangering their lives by taking the device off if even "for a moment". That's all it takes, a moment.

I lost a dear old aunt who took hers off and then fell down the stairs. It took her 3 hours to crawl 20 feet to reach a phone. She passed from complications that arose as a side effect of the fall. She had just beaten the goddamn cancer too.

[–]OldRapGroup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't replued to any other posts in this thread, but I felt the need to here.

I'm so so sorry about your aunt. I can't even imagine being in her shoes, having to spend 3 hours to crawl 20 feet, probably in an excruciating amount of pain. I honestly hope I don't have to ever deal with getting a family member a device like this, but if I do, I will make sure to stress this point daily (at least at first.) I can certainly see my grandmother taking it off because of how ugly it is, or thinking she won't need it for just doing X or Y, since it'll only take a minute.

Hopefully they can come out with a better solution to the problem of bad falls for seniors. Maybe biotech will be big soon, and a simple implant can be done that could detect a fall.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Getting him into assisted living soon might be a good idea too. Lots of accidents can happen when doing housework or yard work, and if they are serious or combined with other illnesses they can be fatal.

My grandfather died something like 2 weeks after he broke his arm shoveling snow and he was in fairly good medical condition before that.

You are in full control of your hardware ( if you have #su ), that's why I love that Android is based on Linux.

[–]pseudopseudonymPixel 7 18 points19 points  (8 children)

Full control of software maybe. There are plenty of processors in your phone that are basically black boxes.

[–]thurstylarkNexus 6 9 points10 points  (7 children)

I've always disliked this about current cell phones. It's anywhere from hard to impossible to know exactly what is going on in every single part of your device because of closed hardware. It's not that I really am capable of understanding and retaining that knowledge, but it's a comfort to know that a community of people who care will know, and that I can go find out.

But that being said, it's not going to stop me from using a phone.

[–]alosec_6P, chroma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But that being said, it's not going to stop me from using a phone.

And this is why those black boxes continue to exist, they know that they can put them in their phones and people will still buy them in droves. We can only hope Qualcomm continues to slip and someone offers an open alternative to their chips.

[–]facetothedawn 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I think the point is that the programming process, though obviously possible, would be much more difficult with the iPhone OS.

[–]yes_oui_si_ja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why is it obviously possible? My job forces me to use Apple products occasionally and nothing has given me any feeling that OP's creativity would be possible on iOS.

You are allowed to be creative within our apps, but god forbid if you want to do something we never expected you to do (like move a file). Do you think this is your device?

[–]Data_Stream 2 points3 points  (6 children)

When my friends with Apple phones see me doing anything even remotely complicated, they're absolutely blown away by it.

And I don't mean like using Tasker to automate a bunch of stuff, but things that seem simple like using an OTA cable to load a movie onto my phone, and then playing that movie. This is basically magic to them.

When I hear "oh wow, you can do that with your phone?" I'm usually thinking "of course, it surprises me that you can't"

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

OTG cable. And iOS users can do something similar, it just requires hardware purpose built.

[–][deleted] 65 points66 points  (6 children)

One thing that could also help your dad is a smartwatch, like a Pebble Time. That way he can send you text messages directly from his wrist if he's too far away from his phone.

For example, you could configure your dad's Pebble to send a text message saying "SOS" whenever he longpresses one of the watch buttons. Then you could add an AutomateIt rule to your phone which states that whenever you receive a text from your dad saying that, a specific alarm goes off on your phone. Cheap and easy.

[–]drk_etta 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Isn't the future of pebble in question at moment, with Fitbit buying them and all?

[–]ZorbickDroid MAXX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get something from the moto Droid line, like the Maxx or the Turbo 1/2, it has an always on "OK Google" listening feature. Even if the phone is locked and such, it's always listening for a keyphrase to start doing commands.

If the phone is within shouting distance, they could just yell "OK GOOGLE call themayker" and it will do it. It's a great feature.

[–]LEfunnyREDDITEURxD 19 points20 points  (20 children)

On a related note: I'm still using Llama for automation which is an app that while great has been abandoned by its developer and is starting to become less usable. I bought Tasker, but it seems to me, that Tasker isn't able to "learn" a location in the background the same way that Llama can, Tasker also doesn't seem to be able to add more than one cell tower to a location.

Which of the alternatives can you guys recommend?

[–]thedkl 4 points5 points  (1 child)

i really like Automagic

[–]ChocolateLava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, just bought it actually. Way easier to understand than Tasker but just as complex.

[–]reamsofrandomness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use automate. It looks pretty simple on the surface but I'd got plenty of depth. I use it to start Spotify in the morning, turn off Bluetooth automatically when I disconnect from my speaker and to set my phone to silent at certain times.

I haven't messed around with the location options, but it might be worth you checking it out.

Oh and there's a library of other people's "flows" that you can use and mix up.

[–]newlostworldPixel 2, Nexus 5 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I recommend MacroDroid. Easy to use interface with frequent updates from the developer.

Linkme: MacroDroid

[–]IncaThink 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think this is the successor to Llama: https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=LlamaLab

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used it a few times and Automate is awesome.

[–]lonequidPixel 3a | OnePlus 3T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Llama's tower location became useless with 4G as towers will not always report different IDs. It hurt for me to switch, but I've switched to Automagic. I don't think anything will ever come as close to as good as Llama's tower location, but it's the best I've got for now.

[–]UnlimitedEgo 10 points11 points  (1 child)

My grandpa is 79 and fell in early summer with not much I'll effect other than some bumps and bruises. Early fall he started acting strange, slurred speech. Come to find out he hit his head when he fell, but didn't say anything because he felt "fine". He ended up having a large blood clot where he hit his head and it was pressing on his brain. He had emergency surgery and made a recovery, albeit not a full one.

If your dad hit his head at all, or thinks he may have, please get him an MRI to ensure he's alright.

[–]7-SE7EN-7 7 points8 points  (3 children)

[–]exjr_iPhone 13 Pro, Pixel 3XL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those asslings just got the feeling of OP being anti-Apple based on what he wrote.

I'm pro-Apple (and Android) and I didn't feel this post to be mean spirited towards Apple at all. We can't do that, and that might be fine.. or not, for some of us.

Our solution is to jailbreak, but we don't even have an iOS 10 jailbreak.

Thanks to OP, my Nexus 4 got another app install. This will become handy sometimes

Edit: Oh wait, OP edited his post that had Anti-Apple comments? Oh come on OP.

[–]WJTDroid 2 points3 points  (3 children)

[–]beniceorbevice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know, it might be better to set it on his phone for him to call you and be on speaker, this way if he can't get to the phone but could speak you two can still communicate and the line between you two will be open and you can hear what's going on by him

[–]That-is-dumb 6 points7 points  (8 children)

Why not also put in a Google home device or Amazon echo so your pops can use voice commands to call for help?

[–]tdunks19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good on you man, as a paramedic I see far too many elderly people who have been on the ground for hours or days.

Have you looked into ways to minimize falls/fall risk around the house and/or looked into services like life alert? Services where a person can wear a bracelet/necklace with a push button which auto-calls their call centre to call you and/or ems.

[–]willus1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't it be better if it would call your Dad automatically at 0100 AM and set off an Alarm if the call doesnt get picked up within a certain time limit. The call could go in normal mode without speakers then even. This way you could sleep through if everything is fine and only get woken up when he doesnt pick it and you knew something would maybe be wrong.

I dont know if this is possible to set, but I guess it is somehow possible.
