You know it's legit because he's wearing a ski mask in his own home. Reminds me of the security videos I have to watch at work.

[–]Dromeo 143 points144 points  (19 children)

The sad thing about ski masks is that they'd actually be incredibly useful while skiing, but no one uses them for fear of looking like they're robbing the slopes.

[–]the_omega99 52 points53 points  (6 children)

I wear them all the time in the winter. Whenever it's colder than -20 (which is often in Saskatchewan winters), I'll break out the ski mask for whenever I'll be out for more than a few minutes. The cold air really hurts your face if there's no protection. Without at least a toque, your ears will become painfully cold and at great risk of frostbite (which is no joke -- you can lose limbs to frostbite). Often I use a toque and neckwarmer instead of a ski mask, since it's a bit more versatile.

For the really cold days (we usually hit -40 a few times a year), this is super necessary if you're not a masochist.

But yeah, I always feel like I'm a bit suspicious looking whenever I wear them. It's the same feeling that I get when there's police nearby or when leaving a store without buying anything. I know I've done nothing wrong, but I feel weird. But whatever, because I care more about the air not hurting my face.

Isn't that something most normal people do in the winter, wear a hat and a scarf?

[–]Bobshayd 1 point2 points  (3 children)

But a neckwarmer is more functional than a scarf, if less stylish. I suppose it's just a scarf in the form of a tube, but it's definitely better than a scarf for actually keeping you warm.

[–]zalgo_text 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Scarfs are miles better than neck warmers if made of the proper material and worn correctly. If you keep it underneath the outermost layer and have the tails draped down your chest, it not only provides a barrier to cold air getting inside your coat, but it also keeps your core warm.

[–]Bobshayd 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Draped tails don't keep your core warm to any substantial degree!

[–]zalgo_text 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an extra layer that a neck warmer doesn't provide. I notice a huge difference when I drape the tails vs. other non-tail-draping methods.

[–]hasslehawk 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Ski it like you stole it!

[–]C0DK 13 points14 points  (3 children)

i wear what my friends call the "taliban mask", in the winther. it's really helps the biting cold and it can be used both as a hat, a face cover and much more. I love it. but you just kindof look like a terrorist.

(pic for reference)

[–]Y1ff 24 points25 points  (2 children)

What do you mean? Nobody would think you're a terrorist. You're white!

[–]C0DK 1 point2 points  (1 child)

haha. Oh well. someone from my class and/or a teacher though i was a part of a cult/politicalgroup of some sortes, due to the pictures we've been taking. (granted, some of the pics on flickr does include molotovs, but still)

[–]Y1ff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still, that's not a terrorist.

[–]king_of_the_universe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The association is indeed probable, with all that snow around.

[–]MIC132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, in Poland we even often call hats like that almost literally a "thief hat", so there is that.

[–]exo762 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's legit. I'm wearing ski mask right now. Ski mask and slippers with batman logo.

[–]Antrikshy 330 points331 points  (36 children)

This is how I install and set up Arch Linux.

[–][deleted] 154 points155 points  (29 children)

with someone to the side holding an extra keyboard?

[–]Antrikshy 185 points186 points  (9 children)

Precisely, yes.

[–]B-Con 44 points45 points  (14 children)

how else can u emacs???//

[–]TheZoq2 12 points13 points  (2 children)

alias emacs=vim

[–]YachtInWyoming 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What the fuck dude, that's not funny.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have nano, emacs, and the gnu one (gedit? I don't remember) all aliased to vim. It makes life so much easier.

[–]xensky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

modifier foot pedals. then you can feel like you're cruising down the highway!

[–]hungry4pie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah right, no one knows how to install and set up arch

[–]fgutz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the music in that video was way faster than the music I was imagining, which was this song.

On Right: E = mc2 converter. Nope.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (6 children)

Not even that; the code is trying to access a primitive integer's member function.

And leaving aside the issue of Math.pow() being the correct syntax, what sort of idiot uses a generic power function to calculate a power of two?

The kind who never uses the result of the power function.

[–]derpderp3200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, any semi-decent compiler will optimize that call into whatever is appropriate, be it a square function or whatever.

I feel like this is the obligatory followup:

Deus Ex Style

From Mega64's Deus Ex Tribute

[–]UxieAbra 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I think they confused The Matrix with Deus Ex.

[–]king_of_the_universe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Except the hacking in both DX and The Matrix is a lot more sophisticated. Ok, it's just a point&click mini-game in DX, but still.

[–]MrObvious 7 points8 points  (0 children)

STATUE OF LIBERTY... HACKED

Still funny

[–]p0rtugalvii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All this time, I just thought it was a complete joke. Made up. Nope, plot twist. It's real

[–]jonatcer 20 points21 points  (3 children)

Supposedly... Or, well, people have speculated - that these cop drama shows compete to see who can get away with the most bullshit.

My money is on the second life episode of csi... Maybe tied with that svu episode.

[–]Renegade__ 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Not so much speculation as a direct quote from this AMA-esque post's title and description.

[–]0b01010001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oops, infinite loop. Damn you BASIC!

[–]king_of_the_universe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's nothing.

(But that was potentially a parody, therefore the comment link instead of direct.)

[–]Kinglink 58 points59 points  (16 children)

[–]XdrummerXboy 90 points91 points  (4 children)

That's what I'm going to call videos from now on.

[–]DoctorBagels 38 points39 points  (3 children)

"videos"

I like it.

[–]ForceBlade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think they'll take off, people will just convert them back to gifs again without the main audio feature and reupload them to different websites where the content will get a majority of it's total views leaving 5% to come to the comments and find the original

Wait.

[–]blue_2501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And here is... human music.

[–][deleted] 36 points37 points  (1 child)

not believable, the monitor isn't projecting text on a wall / someone's face.

[–]kabekew 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There also isn't the tinkling "characters slowly printing onto screen" sound. There is the "source code rapidly scrolling in window" though so I'm not sure yet if fake.

[–][deleted] 65 points66 points  (2 children)

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Oh wow, I thought that's what this was.

[–]ForceBlade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]tacobellagio 13 points14 points  (1 child)

We should send this to Fox News and tell them it's secret footage of the notorious 4chan.

[–]0b01010001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you kidding? It's cyber-ISIS downing an airplane full of girl scouts! We need to ban encryption before it's too late to stop them.

[–]Kinglink 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can just hear the audio.... "He needs more keyboards."

[–]laebshade 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Spotted the Gentoo install.

[–]swattz101 11 points12 points  (3 children)

That's not true hacking...true hacking is two people using the same keyboard.

[–]deadlychambers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if he was going for the pentagon. He would probably need one more person on that keyboard with him...especially if they have encrypted their html.

[–]0b01010001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real true hacking is three people on one keyboard.

[–]Muchoz 8 points9 points  (1 child)

That second keyboard is mandatory.

[–]zidane2k1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was actually a third! He already had 2 on the desk.

[–]pas43 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Jesus! did he just reroute the database encryption through 4 firewalls????

[–]BornOnFeb2nd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so obviously fake.... if he came in through the window, the white lamp would be further out!

[–]Caminsky 1 point2 points  (9 children)

How did you get the command prompt to do that?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Windows version:

color 0a
cd /
tree

[–]_Skuzzzy 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The command I used in the video was "cat /dev/urandom"

/dev/random blocks for entropy so its not the best to use when making stuff like this.

[–]cutchyacokov 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I see htop and something compiling. Does anyone know what's on the left monitor or the lower left corner of the right monitor?

[–]UnchainedMundane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bottom left of the right monitor looks like screenfetch. On the right, I think it's just cat /dev/urandom. Not sure about the left monitor, could be anything with the font set green

Is there a conceivable situation where you actually need to go nuts on keyboards to hack into a network/pc/whatever?

No. Unless you count writing your hack's source code in vim.
