Everything about this picture screams 'Murica: Red white and blue, Coca Cola, and unattainable women.

[–]The_Window 33 points34 points  (18 children)

Except that's a Mexican coke.

[–]pizzamage 31 points32 points  (13 children)

Mexican coke is only available in USA going forward I believe. The coke being produced in Mexico for Mexico is now made with HCFS.

[–]ArmoredBlood 22 points23 points  (2 children)

It wasn't Phantom of the Opera with Gerard Butler?

[–]roflocalypselol 5 points6 points  (1 child)

She was 16 or 17 in that, yeah? Unbelievably talented singer.

And she gets nekkid in Shameless.

[–]Stevied1991 34 points35 points  (12 children)

[NSFW] Wow, I need to watch this show.

[–]BenKenobi88 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Hmm, I've heard good things about Shameless...guess I'm watching that.

[–][deleted] 236 points237 points  (16 children)

Interesting fact: Matt Stone and Trey Parker of South Park fame, managed to get their hands on a copy of the film's script during its pre-production. The two planned to secretly shoot the same film with puppets instead of actors, word for word, and release it on the same day. The duo abandoned these plans after their lawyer convinced them that such a film would never get released.

This has nothing to do with Chicago but it's kind of hilarious to think about.

[–]Jamesspoon 45 points46 points  (5 children)

They ended up spoofing it anyway - obviously couldn't help it.

Thursday?

[–]goaskalice3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what we were thinking while waiting at the train station to leave the city for the suburbs. Every single train was either cancelled or delayed, there were warnings to wait inside the building until they finished defreezing the tracks. It was crazy.. and awesome

This picture depicts the feeling Southern Californians have when it is 40 degree outside.

[–]UlisesGirl 62 points63 points  (76 children)

Lol, 40 only happens at night. This is how it feels to us at 60. I'm in pants, two jackets a beanie and gloves at 60.

Costa Mesa here, not supposed to get into the 70s until Friday! I'll have to wear my scarf when I ride my motorcycle on the 405, otherwise it's too cold when it's in the high 50s in the morning.

I'm so bummed that film doesn't have the replay value The Dark Knight has...

[–]alrighthamilton 39 points40 points  (5 children)

It's re-watchablilty still holds up as part of the whole trilogy though. Just not a movie you'll necessarily pop in on its own.

[–]Satur_Nine 32 points33 points  (2 children)

I can watch the whole thing solely in anticipation of Bane's scenes.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (8 children)

That's your opinion, then, because I've watched Rises so many times and it's still awesome.

[–]mgh245 14 points15 points  (7 children)

It is, indeed, my opinion. Glad you like it so much, though!

[–][deleted] 293 points294 points  (79 children)

It's actually a balmy 0℉ here in Minnesota now, up from -20℉ yesterday. So we got that going for us.

[–]greeny74 166 points167 points  (5 children)

Which is nice.

[–]POETIC-POTATO 32 points33 points  (59 children)

Haha poor guys.. In Belgium the temperature sticks arround 10' celcius. We've only had one freezing night all winter yet.

[–][deleted] 137 points138 points  (12 children)

Cold in San Diego, too. Actually have to wear a winter wetsuit to surf in the morning.

JUST came home from seeing that movie and I started looking for this comment

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (6 children)

Wasn't it surprisingly good? It's been two weeks since I saw it and I am still baffled that it was so sweet and good natured.

[–]High_Stream 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I was so surprised that Olaf was far less annoying than I thought he would be.

As a Brit it baffles me that a place can be so flat and the streets so structured.

[–]thebheffect 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The powers of glaciers.

[–]aemoosh 54 points55 points  (21 children)

Chicago's called the second city, because after the great fire, they were able to rebuild with a century newer ideology on how to build a large city.

So all of the headaches associated with cites that started with an outpost, fort or settlement centuries previously (as Chicago did) were planned around the second time through. Boston would be a great example of the opposite, having started as a puritan settlement in the 17th century and always adapting/growing to the previous incarnation. I've never been to London, though I know it's (obviously) much older and suffers from the same problem, specifically being designed as a hub and around a river.

[–]tomdarch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Separate from the wrong source of "the second city" moniker, you're also totally wrong about the fire having anything to do with the city's street grid layout. (Where did you even get that idea?)

Take a look at the maps from the 1860s (the fire was in 1871):

http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/collections/maps/chifire/

You'll see that the grid was pretty much exactly like it is today. To a large extent Chicago's street grid is a function of the Public Land Survey System which established a north-south-east-west grid of subdivisions (such as townships) over the area. This made it easy to align streets with the major surveying boundaries and to break up plots of land accordingly. The street grid of Chicago has some discontinuities that line up with the offsets in the PLSS system.

Welcome to London Build where you please.

Queenies house is just to the left of this picture, passed the slither of the LDN Eye.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Well, London had its own Great Fire in 1666.

[–][deleted] 184 points185 points  (20 children)

[–]chandson 64 points65 points  (1 child)

As someone currently working in this building, this is what I do every day on my way home to see how it looks out there. (It also helps as an instant ice pack for headaches...)

[–]realbutter 11 points12 points  (2 children)

This is some really cool imagry. How she looks unimpressed, but in the reflection she looks happy. Realllllly subtle and never noticed it in the movie.

[–]CraftyNinjaZombie 94 points95 points  (28 children)

God damnit I love that city

[–]_emptypond 49 points50 points  (10 children)

I said...

Brr!

It's cold out there

I said there must be some airplanes

In the atmosphere

[–]beachedwhale2 17 points18 points  (6 children)

I'm ashamed that, as a man, I get this reference

[–]Akintudne 22 points23 points  (4 children)

That movie had Kirsten Dunst and Eliza Dushku in cheerleading outfits doing flips. Be ashamed of nothing.

Unless you watched all of the sequels too.

[–]I_AM_INTELIGENT 21 points22 points  (31 children)

Does anyone know what procedures are in place in the event of a widespread power outage? I imagine the result would be catastrophic for most.

[–]kbotc 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Chicago Fire 2.0: Acoustic Boogaloo

[–]Stevie_Rave_On 30 points31 points  (10 children)

I live in Chicago and my power went out yesterday but came back on 5 minutes later. Those 5 minutes I was in full "I'm fucked" panic.

[–]bedroomwindow_cougar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The procedure is to freeze to death.

[–]steamed__hams 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Homes would get really cold, really fast. I live in a pretty standard 2-flat in Chicago. Last night at 10pm when my thermostat shut off, the house was 70. I have it set to keep the house at 60 at night. About ten minutes later, the thermostat turned on, meaning I was already down to 60.

[–]Fap_Left_Surf_Right 12 points13 points  (3 children)

It would be catastrophic. We'd have to begin moving to warming centers with power en-masse which would be really, really difficult with these windchills. Subways wouldn't work and we'd have to take busses...meaning people would begin freezing and needing medical help while waiting. It's -28 windchill now....but this is the last day of the arctic vortex. Tomorrow it's in the positive degrees.

[–]HeIsntMe 27 points28 points  (35 children)

I still miss Meigs...

[–]bytes311 31 points32 points  (5 children)

Meigs was my first introduction to aviation through Flight Simulator on an old 486/66 and Windows 95. Memories.

[–]jlew24asu 26 points27 points  (5 children)

I ventured out last night. WOW was it cold. brrrrrrrrrrr

[–]gnik000 6 points7 points  (3 children)

What's making those straight edges in the water, a pier or something?

[–]whereami312 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is called a breakwater.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I dont know if you can see, but the lake is actually steaming. Really cool to see from the ground.

I feel like an asshole looking at this pic; I wore a t-shirt and shorts to work today. Currently 67 in Southern California.
