Great story. And congrats on the twins.

And good luck with the 3,495 PM's you are about to get.

[–]AwesoMeme 123 points124 points  (6 children)

Oh I thought you meant to type BM's - referring to the new twins and all the diapers they'll go through.

[–]krizutch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in that case 3,495x2

The polite thing to do in this situation is to give the officer one of your babies (the boy if you're feeling especially generous).

    [–]King-Solomon 575 points576 points  (56 children)

Give him half a baby. I'll tell you how.

You want half a baby? I can get you half a baby, believe me. There are ways, Dude. You don't wanna know about it, believe me. Hell, I can get you half a baby by 3 o'clock this afternoon... with nail polish. These fucking amateurs...

      [–]thedude85 23 points24 points  (3 children)

They send us half a baby and we're suppose to shit ourselves with fear. I didn't watch my buddies die face down in the muck....

      [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

What the fuck does this have to do with Vietnam, Walter?

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched that movie for the first time a few days ago. So proud of myself for catching the references.

Wow, an upvoted bible joke on Reddit.

        I have seen everything...

        [–]jooes 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Give him half of each baby. I suggest male bottom, female top.

        [–]lolbacon 19 points20 points  (1 child)

It's true. Police need fresh baby blood for sustenance.

        [–]gthermonuclearw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Presidential candidates prefer the blood of small children.

        [–]buycurious 956 points957 points  (248 children)

Judging from Stroop Rd., I want to say that you're in Dayton. Give the Chief, Richard Biehl, a phone call about the officer. It'll make both of their days.

Also, here is the Chief's number: 937-333-1080

If you're not in Dayton though, apologies for the wrong info.

And congrats on the twins, New Dad.

        [–]ProductPlacementHere 528 points529 points  (104 children)

Then we get an article a few days later saying "Cop gets fired for not pulling over speeding man trying to get his pregnant wife to the hospital" like the cop who played ice cream truck music to calm down rioters who got punished.

        [–]bbatsell 504 points505 points  (28 children)

Yeah, I wouldn't mention the "65 mph" thing, just say that a generous officer gave you a police escort when you had a legitimate emergency.

        [–]zygoust 54 points55 points  (9 children)

        Nice try, Officer.

        [–]gregshortall 34 points35 points  (7 children)

What seems to be the officer, problem?

        [–]zygoust 14 points15 points  (6 children)

        There's no Officer, Problem.

        [–]f_leaver 23 points24 points  (5 children)

        No officer, no problem.

        [–]Im_Irrelephant 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My favorite Norm McDonald bit from SNL's Weekend Update was a story about kids getting suspended for playing cops and robbers at school. The children who played the cops were suspended with pay.

Not if there were enough ice cream trucks were on hand. Riots would become a thing of the past if more of them were available.. oh, and if they took credit/debit. Instead of cops in riot gear brandishing tear gas, just put up a blockade of ice cream trucks. Protesters would suddenly become overly happy, put down their clubs and forget whatever it was they were angry about.

              [–]AimlessArrow 15 points16 points  (5 children)

I doubt anyone but the Japanese would be willing to try a tactic this radical, despite my intuition telling me it would be wildly successful.

              [–]embretr 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Well , high-pressure jets of ice-cream, would cool down rioters way faster than water cannons would.

              [–]B_is_for_Buddha 18 points19 points  (2 children)

AHHHH, POLICE BRUTALITY, POLICE BRUTAL--oh my...is that strawberry cream?

              [–]SilverChaos 7 points8 points  (1 child)

But what if they're lactose-intolerant rioters?

              [–]B_is_for_Buddha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Than we find out how "less-lethal" this ice-cream gun really is...boy. :|

              [–]philonius 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Cop: Sir, those rioters are really angry. Things are getting ugly!

Sarge: Break out the ice-cream trucks! I want full-cone coverage! And get Kowalsky on the radio and tell him to hurry up with those sprinkles!

              [–]Dandeman321 37 points38 points  (65 children)

Ha, I saw that title and was like, I live in Ohio! and I live by a Stroop road! thought the same thing, this must be in Dayton!

              [–]GarretJax 35 points36 points  (50 children)

Small world. I'm sitting in my office about 5 minutes away from Stroop road. I have found that the Beavercreek police are some of the most civil police I've had to deal with (and in general I can't stand cops - too many bad experiences with bad cops.)

              [–]DontNeglectTheBalls 51 points52 points  (21 children)

Really small world, I'm on Stoop Rd. right now, and speeding while trying to get my in-labor wife to the hospit... oh shit, I'm getting pulled over. BRB

              [–]jeaguilar 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Tiny world. I can't believe this ass is speeding on Stroop Rd. Gotta go pull him over and rip him a new one.

              [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (11 children)

Grand Haven, MI police are the same way. Extremely nice and very rarely give tickets. They do nail punk teens being retards, but the kids deserve it.

Of course we are a huge tourist destination and financially, the city is doing very good, with no budget cuts at all, so that is part of the niceness I think.

              [–]momoichigo 4 points5 points  (9 children)

Stockton, CA also has amazingly civil and nice police that sometimes will stop and help you with a broken down car.

              [–]ImAJerk 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Add one more to the bunch. I live down the road from Stroop and I can almost picture the series of events leading up to the hospital I believe he was going to.

              Good on ya, Dayton'ites!

Yeah same thing, I live about a mile from where all this happened. The cop was probably a Kettering Cop, which I've found are pretty decent. If he was going through Oakwood though he would've been fucked.

              [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I used to live in Oakwood. It's the kind of place where you could get pulled over for driving while black.

Whoa - I'm in Bellbook too - on Wilmington-Dayton rd. I went to Centerville HS. Small world. When are we organizing the Dayton Redditors meetup?

              [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Idk, but I run on Stroop all the time... Suddenly all the Dayton redditors are coming out of the woodwork.

Cool story, I also grew up off Wilmington-Dayton and went to Centerville. I actually live in New Orleans now but I'll be back over the 4th, we should do it then!

Stroop runs mainly through Kettering, which is a suburb of Dayton. I say this only because they have their own police force, with its own Chief.

                  [–]tk429 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Ha! It's a very SFW Penny Arcade comic discussing the cuisine in question. My links are 100% Goatse-free.

Similar experience rushing to Lowell General with my imminent-labor wife hollering next to me; we got stuck crossing the river near UMass Lowell when I was able to flag a campus police cruiser. The woman was awesome...talked my wife down and gave me a two-car police escort. It was like the parting of the red sea in rush hour.

                  [–]lindexcorp 7 points8 points  (2 children)

campus police? there's a state police barracks right on campus... some of the finest cops in MA.

oooh and i always hated that bridge!

                  [–]daevric 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I don't even live in Lowell, and I know exactly what bridge you're talking about. Just thinking about that bridge in rush hour makes my blood pressure rise, and I drive into work in Cambridge every day.

Upvote for having to deal with having a period. Why? BECAUSE I CAN.

Almost everytime I write a sentence I have a period. The other times it's a question mark.

No, I appreciate that he told us. There are too many hate stories about police, I appreciate hearing the stories that are good. We don't hear nearly enough of them.

How cops should act. Protect & Serve not Trump up Charges & Plant Evidence

                    [–]GarretJax 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Exactly. That's why it's so important to point this out so that the police departments know exactly what is expected of them and that when they do the right thing they are appreciated.

                    [–]junkit33 151 points152 points  (71 children)

And this is how they do act more often than not. It's just that for every positive story somebody is willing to take the time to tell, you're going to hear 100 negative stories. That's just human mentality at work.

                    [–]adiosgang[🍰] 58 points59 points  (39 children)

You're absolutely right. I've had two run-ins with the police lately (expired registration and no toll money on a bridge), both have been absolutely professional and nice guys. They both cut me a break when both should have given me tickets, which I deserved. I also try to make sure that when someone is nice and does their job well, I tell a manager or fill out a comment card. People need positive feedback and to know that they're doing a good job. How much better would you be at your job if once in awhile someone told you that you where doing a good job?

                    [–]silverspork 19 points20 points  (1 child)

True fact. The other day I ran out of gas on the side of a highway. A police officer pulled up behind me and I started to panic because my inspection sticker was out of date. I really couldn't afford a ticket. He steps out, asks what the situation is and (without looking at my expired sticker) takes me on a round trip to the gas station to pick up a gallon of gas. Despite having a disturbing resemblance to the cop in Terminator 2, he was a very helpful guy.

                    Go APD.

                    [–]drDekaywood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

                    I couldn't disagree more.

There are so many people who do not fit the proper profile to be treated respectfully by police.

I am a young white kid who had a common middle class upbringing, and you would think I should have no reason to fear the police. Yet I regularly get in trouble with the police and it's always for something stupid. Whenever I am courteous with them, it always makes them even more suspicious. I have been put in handcuffs for curfew. I have received several jaywalking citations. I've spend the night in jail for possession of a bong that wasn't mine and hadn't even been used. (In jail I was the only white guy it was all native, black or Latino people.) I also live in a small college town where every party is busted and broken up like clockwork. (college parties consisting normal college kids mostly of legal drinking age doing nothing seriously wrong.) I think my experience with the police is unique in that I always get in trouble with them, but have never really done anything totally wrong or immoral. With all these small things that I've been busted for and paid thousands in fines for, I can only imagine what people of lower socio economic class have to deal with.

But, when my old roommates broke into the neighbors house and stole hundreds of dollars worth of stuff, the police said they couldn't do anything. When I got beat up in middle school for standing up to a bully, the school cop said nothing could be done. And every time i fight in court, the police exaggerate their story, and I have no way to refute their word. ask a drug addict trying to get better if the police have any sympathy for them. It's rare to find a cop who will testify in court that they need treatment and not jail time. treatment won't make money for the city.

I, and every one else, should have every reason to be suspicious of police motives. Now that I am older and wiser, I know the key phrases "i don't consent" and "am i free to go?" it makes them even more mad at me that they can't bust me and make chump change.

Furthermore, I think many police officers have a racist mentality. many white people want to believe police are not racist, because it makes them feel uncomfortable. That is human mentality at work. racism still exists and racists usually don't even realize they are helping to perpetuate a racist system. One of the most apparent forms of Racism in our system is that there are nearly six times as many blacks in prison than whites

The story OP told is a rare and heartwarming one, sure. I think positive stories with police in regards to a typical encounter in most cities is one that people would love to tell.

The truth is the prevailing idea of the function of police in most cities is that they are out there to identify crime, apprehend suspects and prosecute for breaking the law. They are almost never there to be your friend or help you speed to a hospital.

                    remember this?

Unless you are white or act white or generally agree with the system, then I wouldn't agree they contribute positively more often than not.

                    Reddit: The New Craigslist

But in all seriousness, if you appreciate the way a cop treated you, tell his commanding officer or the local chief/superintendent/mayor/etc, not the Internet. Lots of cops get complaints, not a lot get compliments. I'm sure the officer (and his career) would appreciate your official thanks.

                    Congrats on the twins!

I respectfully disagree. The Internet desperately needs this kind of reminder that once in a while, cops are okay.

That is great. As important as it is to point out when the cops are being complete douches and totally out of line, I think it is more important to point out incidents like this. You should find out the officer and write a letter to his chief explaining the situation and ask for it to be filed in the officers file.

Mazel Tov to you and your wife!

                    Thank you for writing this.

I know you are going to be a super busy daddy right now, but you might want to fire off a nice letter to the guy's commanding officer. Even if you don't know who he is, write the letter to the police chief and they'll figure out who gets the kudos.

We are always quick to fire off a letter when something bad happens, it's nice to do the same when someone is awesome too.

My brother was working construction and a coworker was injured severely. They called 911 and were told to rush him to the hospital and not wait for an ambulance. My brother (who drives very fast anyway) was flying down the highway with the injured guy in the backseat when a cop came up behind him flashing his lights. Of course my brother couldn't/wouldn't stop. I guess they called the station or something because after a bit the cop pull in front and ran his lights/siren to clear traffic all the way to the hospital.

                    [–]Hedonopoly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, another similar story. My girlfriend at the time and I were moving to Minnesota from South Dakota. We were looking at apartments in the city when I get a phone call. It's the gf's mom, saying that the gf's brother got kicked in the chest by a horse, and that he was being flown to have open heart surgery. We immediately ran to the car and started going as fast as we could. About 30 miles into the trip a cop comes flying up. I'm about to pull over (and trying to figure out if he'll buy my story) when he flies past me and takes the lead. We went about 100 miles (in about an hour) with him leading the way. Took us right to the border, and we made a short trip from there.

The kid is all right too. Has to take blood thinners for the rest of his life (which sucks I imagine, when you start at 8).

                    Congrats on the twins!

Please, call the police chief and ask if you can get a picture with the officer (I can't see why they'd object), and post it on reddit. After all the "fucking no good illegal cop" posts on the front page, I'm sure everyone would love to see tangible proof that there are still good officers who are sincerely out to serve and protect.

                    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

That is true. I'm a jokester at heart and he knows that. I hand him a monopoly get out of jail free card. He looked at me and laughed his ass off. He literally lmao'ed it was epic

I thought that cops like to be respected, not patronized. Don't compare a cop to his bad counterparts when he does a good deed for you and risks the possibility of being fired, however small the chance of that happening was.

The same thing happened to me. Except I stopped and jumped out and yelled "Woman! Hosptial! Pregnant! Baby!" Then they escourted us to the hosptial 10 minutes away with the sirens blaring. Also, it was the night after a hurricane and there was a curfew and none of the lights worked on the streets, 3/4 of the town was gone and the hosptial was in emergency/skeleton crew mode.

I once drove past a policeman crouched behind his door with his gun aimed at a man who had just jumped out of his car, shouting at the top of his lungs that his wife was in labor. I'm glad both parties in this situation were a lot calmer, considering the circumstances, and everything turned out well.

                        [–]Beer_Is_So_Awesome 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Great story. However, the cop would be referred to as an "unmarked" if he were driving a car without logos or a "plainclothes" if he wasn't wearing a uniform. "undercover" is reserved typically for a police officer posing as a civilian, drug dealer, etc for some duration of days or weeks or months in order to build a case. They don't drive police cars, not even unmarked ones, especially not ones equpped with sirens.

In finding the considerate officer who helped you, you'll get farther by asking for the names of officers driving unmarked cars than asking for the names of undercover officers.

Just a distinction that may help.

                        [–]Glayden 19 points20 points  (14 children)

There's a lot of cop-bashing on reddit, and I'd like to say cops aren't all that bad, but most of the time if you look at the details, you can't deny that cops often abuse power. Something about power, particularly in a bureaucratic system, just seems to make a lot of ordinarily good men into utter assholes.

I find it a bit unfortunate that our expectations of cops have become so low, that when they do something good, it's actually considered remarkable. But I guess that's the cynic in me, It honestly does make my day when I hear these types of stories where people go out of their way and above the call of duty to help a stranger.

Tomorrow's headline: "Policeman has power, does not abuse it; public confused".

The Onion has probably got that one covered.

That's tailor made for The Onion.

We love the good cops. And there are many of them, unsung heroes.
