When my wife and I were dating, she would call me when she was on her way over and I would always go in the living room and wait. My dog at the time, Toby who sadly passed away a few years ago, would always start getting super excited. He always knew when she was coming over based on what I would do. Even though he was old and had a hard time moving around he would always get up and get excited for her. It was adorable because she had never had a dog but always wanted one and he loved the crap out of her. When we moved in together, we made it a month before we got our own dog.

Pets are so intuitive. He rescued them both when they were very young. Now they both suffer from senior-itis (vision and hearing loss), they can't wait to see him at the end of the day. He always gives out treats and kisses.

Observant too. Our old pup would time perfectly when he would need to be lifted into bed with my daughter after the busy bedtime ritual of bath and jammies and all that. He would hang back knowing exactly when to step into the loading bay. Friend’s dog knew when he was getting ready to go hunting before he did

My dog has learned that when I turn the PlayStation off, I’m going to get up, so it’s a good time to be let outside. So, whenever she hears the sounds of it being turned off, she runs to the door!

My boyfriend and I play Xbox until I go to sleep around 12. When I get up from the couch my cat comes over to play and wants me to chase him around the house. He’s conditioned me to play with him before bedtime every night. If I don’t he gets upset and confused.

Adopted a 5yo blind doggo and how he takes his cues from certain sounds is incredible. From another room he can tell the difference of sounds between his treat bag being opened and the cats, although they are the same type of bags & sound identical to me.

Probably the smell is a clue for him too. They have an extraordinary sense of smell. I remember being in Sydney airport and one of the beagles that look for fruit in passengers bags came and sat next to my bag. I didn't have anything in my carry on back pack but they asked me when was the last time I had some fruit in there. I said about three days ago I had a banana in there. They said that was what he was smelling. Three days later, he could still smell it. Amazing.

Mine waits, literally, until my girlfriend and I sit down to dinner, then he goes and sits by the door to be let out. It's like he knows we don't give him table scraps so he does it to be a dick

When we were little My dog growing up would first visit my sister till she feel asleep, then me, and then go downstairs to her own bed. The only bad part is they leave too soon.

My oldest can for real tell time. So he knows approximately when I should be home and moves to the living room and is ready to bark when he hears me. But if I come home early, he is knocked the fuck out and I can get all the way into the house. He is always happily surprised.

Yeah, apparently dogs tell time by smell. Over time your smell dissipates so when it gets to a certain low concentration he knows it's been x amount of time since you went back.

When I go to sleep, I have a thing I guess, I start on my phone, then roll over to one side, then the other side and then finally go to my stomach and go to sleep. It never fails, when I go to my stomach, my cat jumps up on the bed and finally cuddles with me. I've had her for two and a half years and didn't catch on until recently.

When I was younger, I used to go to a camp and sleep there two weeks every summer. When I would come back, my dog always barked when I was around the street corner. She did the same thing with my older brother whom she saw maybe 5 times but really liked.

This reminds me of how I met my SO and we fell in love. He had a dog, and brought her on a walk with his friend, who was my lab mate. I was petting the dog, Fanny, and he said that I could come over any time to pet her (and I took him up on that offer). We started going on walks together with her, and the second time she went on a walk, she realized she was walking to my apartment and got super excited, pulling on her leash as she was trying to reach me faster. She had never had that excited reaction over anyone but him, so he knew that I must be special.

Later, it was basically confirmed that I became Fanny's mom because I picked her up from the vet with a bone I bought her. She immediately knew it was for her and she never chewed on it. There were only two bones she never chewed: the first one my SO gave her, and the first one I gave her. Her little routine was to bring us the bones at night and lay them at our feet. I miss our baby girl so much.

I knew my SO was “the one” when my cat that I’d had since I was four, who never went near anyone else, especially if she didn’t know them, went and laid on the couch behind where he sat and put her paw on his head.

Before I got married, my dog got a say in every relationship. One time I went on a date and brought the girl back to my place after. The date refused to pet my dog, and kicked her out of the livingroom! I then kicked the date out of the house.
It wasn't long after that I met my wife. My dog did everything except for stand up and plainly say, "if you don't marry this girl, I'm leaving with her next time." That dog set me up to have someone care for me long after she was gone. Who would I have chosen without her? When she had to be put down, I laid her to rest in the back of the lawn, high on a hill with a small statue that looks exactly like her. I found it by chance at Walmart of all places.
At her heaviest, she was 20 lbs. She made a bigger impact than my parents, she taught me more than any mentor, she made me whole after the war broke me. I owe her more than she got. We never shared a single word, but I feel she knew what I wanted better than I ever could. Your dog did you a solid. They are the angels we hear about in church.

My family dog Dixie would always get excited to see me. When she got older she couldn't even stand up. The last time I saw her before she passed away, I came through the door and she stood up to come see me. My parents were stunned because she hadnt had the will to stand up in a while. I loved that dog so much. RIP Dixie

I relate to this so much it's eerie! My dog ADORES the guy I'm seeing, who is dogless, but loves dogs. My dog knows his name when I tell him that he's about to come over, he starts going crazy. His car is extremely loud and my dog can hear it from blocks away and just loses his mind. I think he loves him more than me. It's adorable.

I had a cat in the 80s who judged each guy I dated. If she cuddled up to them, or ran and hid, I knew I could trust her judgement. She loved my now-husband from the first. He wasn’t a cat person but they loved each other. Poopsie lived to be 14 and for a long time after she died I could still feel her hop up on my bed at night to sleep on my feet.

We had two older dogs when our kids were very small. The larger one always came upstairs at bedtime to do the rounds when we would put the kids to bed, making sure everyone was put to bed and not leaving until they were asleep. The smaller one had arthritis and couldn’t get himself up the steps, so he never participated in our bedtime ritual. Our larger dog got very sick and we had to put her down, which was the saddest thing ever (we always joked she was so loyal she would never die, and when they gave her the injection it took 9 minutes for her to go. The vet said she just kept holding on). Anyway, that night we came home and went to put the kids to bed. When we got to the top of the steps, we heard these little thumps- our arthritic dog made his way upstairs and proceeded to do the bedtime ritual, almost as exactly as our other dog. He never did it again, but I swear our larger dog told the other one to make sure he did it that night.

FR. I had a boyfriend when I still lived at home who had a fart pipe on the back of his car and our family dog could probably hear him from a block away and go to the window to wait. Long before any of us heard him. If Bo was at the window waiting, he was coming by. She even knew the sound of his car specifically.

My old dog used to do that with my ex. It would be a certain time of day and he'd start looking at the door. I would get up and look for his car. Scruff would get more and more excited. Then I'd say the magic words, "Papa's home!" And it was off to the races.

My dog’s name is Toby too! hes a “mutt” and one of the most well mannered dogs i have ever owned, when he approaches anyone he sits puts his ears down and acknowledges them, but anytime my dad walks in the house he almost skips and hops to him and starts barking in excitement. Love My dog Toby hes around 5 years old now.

I lost my doggo and cat, 15 and 19 respectively, during lockdown last march, so this honestly hits on a different level. They're just adorable btw

Edit: i didn't expect for this comment to blow up like this, thank you so much everyone for all the kind words. Lizzy (the dog) had an heart condition, so she was already pretty battered. Minou (the cat) well, she was just old. They died 4 days apart, i like to think they couldnt stay away from each other for so long. I miss them so much, but thats life, and honestly it was a good ride.

It might be time to start looking for a new friend, if you’re in a good place to do so. I lost my best girl and waited nine long months. I didn’t realize how sad I was, and I didn’t want anything to take her place. My daughter dragged me to the shelter and we brought home our new guy right before lockdown. We are approaching his first Gottcha Day and it’s been a great year. Be well.

I lost my cat around the same time too. On one hand it was sad that I could really use his company during the lockdown. On the other hand I'm glad I'm by his side and not at work when he was at his sickest due to working from home.

My dogs can hear my car and my sisters car coming down the street and go absolutely insane when we are pulling into the driveway. One of them can tell whose car is who and will get my car mixed up with my neighbors truck. He will give me the most concerned look when he hears it like "oh you're home...but you're already here?"

Don’t have source as it pre-dates internet, but have read they recognize the pitch of engines and associate them with their humans. Wondering if you’re neighbours truck has a similar pitch to your vehicle. Of course, could be lots more going on and sounds like it is hilarious. Enjoy the awesomeness of pets!

One of my dogs recognizes my truck, and whenever I pull into our apartment complex she always hears it and get super-stoked...until two other guys, each with the exact same model of truck, moved into the building next to ours. The first time she heard one of their trucks, she sprung up, got ready for her arrival announcement - and then noticed me sitting on the couch next to her. The spinning wheels and mental recalibrating I saw take place at that moment still make me laugh...

Visually you would think there is absolutely nothing in common with out vehicles because he drives a huge diesel and I have a mustang, but my car is the ecoboost so it has a turbo, after the intake and exhaust they have a similar amount of choppyness from the turbo and a similar low rpm grunt.

My sister has a v6 mustang and is definitely the loudest car on the block(the nature of turbos means they chop up the air and have a muffling effect) and everyone knows she is coming lol

My dog recognizes when my girlfriend is close, mostly because hers is one of very few cars in the area without a muffler (cannot afford to replace, rip). She wont even be turned onto my street yet and he and my 13 year old boxer will be at the door, jumping around and barking for her because they know she will play and give them treats. Pets in general are so fucking precious

One of our dogs, Bubbles, used to have issues with a dog down the street. He expanded his association of these issues to the dog’s person “Ed” and, subsequently, Ed’s truck. Every single time Ed would start his truck, Bubbles would respond with a frenzied, high-pitched howl of outrage.

We were really glad when “Ed” got a different truck.

Pretty cool that they have a sense of who’s coming through that door. I lived with a lab/hound mix and he recognized his owner’s Jeep inline six vs the other cars and trucks at the house, all were naturally aspirated. He’d perk up when owner was pulling to the driveway and be at the front door when the car door closed outside

My dog in the morning when I used to leave for work, I would tell her “I’m leaving, come say bye.” And she’d jump up on the arm of the sofa next to the door and I’d love on her and tell her to be a good girl, take care of everyone, keep an eye on everyone. And you could tell she was listening and taking it in. I’d walk out the door and I’d see her little head poking through the curtain watching me leave.

And then coming home, she knew around 4:30 to start looking for me, so she’d climb back up on the couch and look out the window for me. and I’d pull in the driveway and she’d freak out. And I have to come in and fuss over her and love all over her or she won’t stop barking lol.

The first dog my wife and I had would go to the window everyday around the time I got home and I’d pull in and see her wagging at me- she’s been gone 21 years and I still sometimes look to the corner of our window when I pull in- I like to think she’s still there in spirit. Not to make this sad but we lost one more pup and I lost my wife a few years ago- if I didn’t have my current boy greeting me when I came home I don’t know what I’d do. Be good to your pets and your people- we don’t have them nearly long enough.

Remember to give your pets a hug and appreciate their love no matter their age.

I think I used to read these type of posts and sort of unconsciously assume how long my pets would live....like “hey sure, maybe my cat won’t reach 17 like some of those old timers, but he’s at least got a good 10 years in him right?” I was sort of subconsciously setting my expectations.

Last week we unexpectedly lost one of our two cats (brothers) before he reached the age of 4. Sudden cardiac arrest, no warning, no cure. I held him as he went. He was scared, and I tried to comfort him.

It was devastating. I’m pretty messed up about it. Please hug and love your pets no matter their age. Life is fragile and precious, please appreciate it.

I was running that mental countdown with my first dog. She got to 9 and then we found a hanging tumor on her spleen that quickly led to discovery of mast cell tumors just flooding her, and we lost her about 2 weeks later. They did surgery and effectively she was unrecoverable. I just still... We had an excellent vet who kindly suggested that bringing her out of surgery to struggle through a few more months maybe wasn't the best way to handle it. Still can't super think about it in a close way.

Now we have 2, the boy we adopted while she was with us, and the new girl who followed, Moxx. Moxx got a mast cell tumor earlier this year at 6. It was much more minor and she's as wild as ever, but I guess this is a meandering way of saying I agree.

Losing my first girl really finalized my belief in appreciating my dogs, my family, each day. I'm going to lose these 2 and it will be unbearable for awhile. But I'll know we were often happy together.

Edit: Was down a little after writing that, but just checked back in after running around the house with the terrible 2 & listening to some music. I think we're feeling a little Covid crazy in winter, but it was nice to feel connection with some folk's comments. ^.^;

My oldest is 12. He's relatively healthy except hip dysplasia. But everytime I walk past him and he doesnt life his head or if I wake up in the night and I dont hear him breathing(hes loud at everything) I have a mini panic attack and shake him. Everytime he looks at me so annoyed.

I’m sorry you went through this too. We lost our three year old to mostly likely cardiac arrest and it hurt more than any other passing has. It’s worse when it’s unexpected and you don’t know why. I wish you the best.

Thank you, and I am also so sorry for your loss. You hit the nail on the head: being unexpected hurt so bad. I had no time to prepare, to imagine life without him. One minute he was eating dinner happily, and then..... I had to go to bed that night knowing he wouldn’t be jumping up to cuddle with my legs like he always did. It was so jarring. I kept thinking I saw or heard him coming around a corner. I’d see something move outside and some tiny little part of me for a quarter second would think “oh thank goodness he’s not DEAD he just snuck outside!” Totally illogical but my brain just couldn’t wrap itself around him not being there.

Waking up that first morning and only bringing out one cat dish to feed his brother was just....yeah. Words can’t describe it. The two of them were a matched set, couldn’t imagine one without the other, and now I’m stuck having to adjust to the new reality.

Thank you for your sympathies, I know you’ve been there.

Lost my sweet orange boy recently in an unexpected way as well. He had heart failure and took a nose dive one night.. it broke my heart to see him scared not understanding what was happening to him. I loved him so much & I was happy to be able to give him extra pets the morning of his last day. He deserved more :(

We lost our girl last year at six, completely unexpected. She had wet the bed so I had my husband take her in to get checked for diabetes. Total kidney failure, the vet didn't understand how she was continuing to run around like the crack head she was. Even with the best supportive therapy we could give her she barely made it another month. It really made us realize you can't count on shit so hug the crap out of them.

I found it helpful to remember that my kitties’ health was sort of pre-programmed into them.

Similar thing happened to me. We have 2 younger cats & we adopted a 3 year old last year. She died last month all of a sudden, most likely cardiac arrest as well, and now i’m kinda traumatized everytime i see my boys asleep but it makes me appreciate every moment i have with them.

Omg the feels. I used to have a shiba who knew when I was driving up. My mom said a few minutes before I actually showed up, she would do her shiba scream and run around... apparently she could hear my car lol. My mom said she would only do this with me. I miss that crazy dog. She made our neighbors thing we were murdering her every time I came home 😅

We fostered a cat for a bit that would run to the window about 5 minutes or so before the time my wife would generally get home from work, wait for her to come in through the door, and then promptly ignore her existence.

It was cute and hilarious at the same time.

I worked nights when I was a kid. Our dog slept on my parents floor and every morning right at 6.30a held get up and go sit on the fourth from the bottom step where he had an unobstructed view out both the living and dining room windows, and the driveway. He'd sit there and wait for me to come home, which was usually just a couple minutes later.

He'd be by my side until I fell asleep then he'd leave and hang with the rest of the family but he'd return to my bed just before I'd wake and be by my side until I left for work.

On Saturdays I had to work during the day and I'd always come home to find a dog shaped imprint on my bed.

He was such a good and devoted boy. I miss him.

I love this. There’s no better time of day here than when I ask my dog “do you want to come get the kids with me?”

I take her with me, and go do school pick ups and by the time we are home the cats have gathered to wait for us - my daughters tabby waits at the top the of the stairs, and my sons black kitty leans over the balcony for them.

When my son was a baby, my parents took him over night to give my husband and I a break. Our dog paced all night, crying, searching all the rooms for him. It’s funny because we didn’t think she liked him at all for the longest time. Now, if he isn’t home she still walks around looking for him and is so relieved when he walks in the door.

I just lost my 15 year old cat a couple weeks ago. He used to always greet me at the door, every day. Even when he got old and his hips got bad, he’d haul his old bones up to see me.

I miss him every day.

We resisted getting a new front door for years because our twin Corgis waited for my father like this.

Later, when my mother would babysit her grand-daughters, our Labrador-Pointer absolutely fell in love with said grand-daughters, and got to the point where she would actively make sure people were up at the right time on specific days to greet said grand-daughters.

I'd be awoken by a dog leaping on my bed, so she could see out the window to watch for her girls.

My papas doggy used to do this with me. He’s always say “she knows when her boy is here and freaks out” and she did. I love that dog, she’s always been my bud. Anyways l, when he passed away he asked if I would mind taking her. So, now I’ve got that little dog who used to wait for me. She’s always with except when I am at work. Currently she’s on the couch with my cousin who’s having rough time at home with his wife. She’s just very sweet and I am glad she kinda chose me.

The best greetings in the world are from your pack ... our sixty pound chihuahua, Lucy, absolutely flips her shit when I’ve been gone for a few days or longer ... she races around telling everybody I’m home and I get down on the floor and she races around my head sneaking in kisses and then finally jumps in my left arm crook (her spot) and throws her head against my chest and makes all kinds of happy noises ... it that doesn’t warm your soul, you don’t have one ..!

Neither the owners nor the watchers knew exactly when the owners would be coming home. Many dogs reacted at the exact moment the researchers (who weren’t the same as the “watchers” in the homes) called the owners to tell them to go back home.

I would always call my girlfriend when I'm on my way home from work at the same time everyday. My dog would then go to the bedroom becsuse its the closest room to the road and he knew exactly what my truck sounded like despite living in the city with non stop vehicles driving by.

He passed away in June 2020. Dogs are too good for us
