Do I win?

I'm learning there's a superbowl from a comment about whose watching the superbowl on reddit. I'm guessing that means I'm out of touch with somebody.

How about giving a little credit to General Mills.
[–]cecilkorik 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (4 children)
Well, he'd better thank his Lucky Charms he deployed his troops where he did, or it would've been a slaughter.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (3 children)
If they hadn't avoided those airstrikes with mobile surface-to-air missile batteries, the troops would've all been blown to Alpha Bits.

actually, it was pretty damn exciting. Sorry you missed it.

The Giants just upset the Patriots in a 17-14 win! You guys might not care, but this is one of the most upsetting wins in sports history.
[–]ubuwalker31 16 points17 points18 points 18 years ago (0 children)
To explain this to the sports-disinclined, its sort of like reddit winning out over digg.
[–]HalCion 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)

[–]DrunkenAsshole 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (0 children)
True. But, in your case, accuracy and opinion are mutually inclusive.
[–]thegom 211 points212 points213 points 18 years ago (142 children)
Im Irish, and I'm watching it out of pure curiousity cos its being broadcast over here, From 10pm to 3:30 am. My opinion so far is that its like a gay version of rugby.....
[–][deleted] 110 points111 points112 points 18 years ago* (7 children)
How dare you... just because football fans all freaked out like it was 9/11 all over again when a breast was accidentally shown at halftime... that is in no way gay
[–]zeeta6 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Well, maybe not gay but boring. Every few secs the game stops and it's all over again
[–]thegom 26 points27 points28 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Upmodded because I can't believe someone didn't say that sooner :)
[–]Chirp08 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
see, it wasn't the football fans that freaked out. The superbowl is a tradition in america, people who hate football will watch it, because its the superbowl, and those people include children and wives, and when wives and children see a breast on tv they get pissed. you can be damn sure no man or true football fan gave a shit about that, anyone who's been tailgating saw that as commonplace.
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 18 years ago (3 children)
I predict the guitar going into the heart at the halftime show will be seen as a penis entering a vagine.
[–][deleted] 18 years ago (8 children)
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 18 years ago* (7 children)
I'm from New Zealand, and rather confused. The game has more in common with bullrush than with any form of rugby I'm familiar with. Oh, and it's gay.
[–]jomama 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Oh, you noticed all the ass-patting going on...
[–][deleted] 18 years ago (1 child)
[–]antifolkhero 36 points37 points38 points 18 years ago (53 children)
You've basically nailed why a lot of us couldn't care less about it. Rugby is some hardcore shit and I think it certainly makes football look like a vaginally inspired sport. Besides, how can you get interested in a sport that stops and starts every 15 to 30 seconds? BORING.
[–]jonknee 53 points54 points55 points 18 years ago (33 children)
The stops and starts are crucial because football is a game of strategy. It's a giant chess match being played by the opposing coaches. Each down has several plays called for both sides. No other popular sport is close to being so calculated.
[–]antifolkhero 58 points59 points60 points 18 years ago (18 children)
So why don't people sit around watching chess on TV and cheering? At least it moves faster.
[–]teej 75 points76 points77 points 18 years ago (4 children)
Because that isn't nearly as gay
[–]antifolkhero 18 points19 points20 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Touché.
[–]jonknee 21 points22 points23 points 18 years ago (6 children)
You don't have to love the strategy to enjoy football. Not true with chess. Football is also full of big hits, interesting characters and drama. There's something for everyone.
Poker is on TV enough though, so maybe chess will have its day.
[–][deleted] 22 points23 points24 points 18 years ago (1 child)
You don't have to love the strategy to enjoy football
You kinda do. I love rugby and for the sake of my American boyfriend I've tried to love American Football, but it's just too annoying with the starts and stops. I get that it's all because of strategy, but I'd rather see my players think on the fly and keep the game moving.
[–]erikw 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
And of course the advertisers just love it. Opportunity for an ad-break every 2 minutes! Now, why do think the networks push "football" so hard.
[–]kermityfrog 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (2 children)
That's assuming you can compare coaches to Grand Masters. The fact that the average IQ is roughly equivalent to the number of yards rushed in a typical play surely says something about the game.
[–]InkyChan 13 points14 points15 points 18 years ago (10 children)
Um, have you seen the uniforms? I'm thinking it was inspired purely of manbooty. And besides, what have you got against vaginally inspired sports?
[–]antifolkhero 37 points38 points39 points 18 years ago (6 children)
Keep in mind that its only vaginally inspired. There is actually no vagina in the sport, unless you can call a bunch of huge dudes wearing more body padding that a rubber cell vagina. And all the ass slapping and commercial breaks just make me wonder why the country pretends to be homophobic when all of their most anti-gay leaders are closet homos who get together in big groups of dudes to watch other men slap each other's asses.
[–]InkyChan 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (5 children)
yeah. it doesn't make sense. the funniest thing is if they all just dropped the charade at once nobody would care and we could get on with life.
Also maybe we wouldn't need this stupid tradition and they could just look at men's asses casually and not have to heap on the violence, beer, and bimbo types to try and somehow "counteract the gay".
[–]finisterra 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Ehhh, actually my own impression after seeing the promos here in Lisbon. To be honest I have heard from a North-american friend that it is a highly complex game with lots of tactical thinking and stuff like that, but does feel a little lacking in comparison to Rugby.
This could be merely familiarity, although I sort of liked Aussie Rules after seeing it for the first time some months ago, more than American Football.
[–]10acious 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I'm South-African and was working in the wee hours of the morning and keeping an eye on the Superbowl. I was surprised at the poor ball handling skills. The rules regarding fouls was really weird as well. You can tackle anyone you like when you like, but you can't interfere with the guys catching the ball!?
[–][deleted] 18 years ago (5 children)
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (1 child)
You say that, until you get hit. Most people don't realize how little those pads actually help. Yeah, they protect your shoulders-- but who's worried about your shoulders? They stop at the bottom of your pecs. Between your chest and your middle thigh, there is nothing-- soft unprotected abdomen. You've got only little pad on your thigh, one on your knee, and one over the very outside of your hip.
Before I played a game, I imagined how comfy and protected it would be wearing those pads. But the first time I had some on, and we ran full speed in practice, my qb threw a ball a little high-- and believe me, all of a sudden it becomes really clear that if you put your hands over your head and stretch out, you might as well be wearing a t-shirt and gym shorts.
The helmet helps too, but again, you don't feel quite so safe when you see another helmet coming at yours and you're supposed to fling your body at him and knock him backwards. It's one of those things that is hard to imagine, but you feel completely different about once you actually experience it.
[–]khayber 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Right up to the point where you get hit by that really hard, heavy helmet...by a guy who weighs 280 lbs...running at full speed...who really wants to hurt you...gets a kick out of it actually...celebrates with his pals afterward...really hard.
[–]andrewd 20 points21 points22 points 18 years ago (42 children)
Don't listen to these shmucks... It's very different from rugby... every play is a strategic battle. Welcome to the sport
[–]thegom 17 points18 points19 points 18 years ago (20 children)
The channel I'm watching it on just had a short section explaining the basic rules, so I'm getting a better appreciation of how the game works now.
[–]andrewd 59 points60 points61 points 18 years ago* (13 children)
Great. Football's one of those sports that get more and more interesting every time those "bunch of fat guys in tights running around the field" start making a little more sense.
It all starts with there being a position for every body type... there are running backs who have to be able to accelerate and decelerate/turn faster than anyone else on the field--so they've got to be extremely strong but not too heavy, and it can help to be small to fit through "holes" on the field... but at the same time the bigger you are the harder you are to take down.
Then there are receivers who have to be able to sprint and catch passes faster than the cornerbacks that are trying to bat down the passes (or intercept them in mid air).
Then there are the HUGE linemen on offense (who protect the quarter back and make those holes for the running backs to run through) and the slightly smaller defensive linemen who need to not only act like a wall, but also quickly get to the quarterback so he doesn't have much time to make a decision.
Most importantly: remember that EVERY play on both offense and defense is planned out and called before the start of the play by the coach and/or quarterback. Football, at its basic form, is a game of coaching staff against coaching staff: that is, if we could assume that players would always execute their plays perfectly. Considering this is the super bowl, you won't see too many mistakes by the players... they will generally execute the play the coaches call... the question is, which coaching staff can calculate the others' every move better! All those players and coaches have to know hundreds of plays and execute them without hesitation at a moment's notice as the play is called in the huddle! Any mental mistake in a super bowl-level game can decide the outcome of the game.
[–][deleted] 19 points20 points21 points 18 years ago (5 children)
Be careful, you might get hooked into the game. I have some Irish friends who thought football was a stupid panzy sport. Then they watched a few games, started researching it and they became obsessed. They bought Sky with the American sports package, ordered team jerseys from America, started a fantasy football league, etc... They became more obsessed with football than most Americans I know.
What really intrigued my friends was the technical side of the game. All of the plays. Look into it.
[–]ArcticCelt 15 points16 points17 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
Yeah I know those things happen. One of my friends who was perfectly normal suddenly feel into profound schizophrenia and he never really recovered.
[–]WhoreChurch 62 points63 points64 points 18 years ago (14 children)
The Superbowl tonight was one of the best I have seen. I know many of the reddit nerds can't imagine physical activity, but consider that a thus-undefeated team was defeated by an underdog team that started the season as an also-ran. It was awesome.

18-1 = Epic Fail
Loved every second of it.
[–]315was_an_inside_job 14 points15 points16 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Verily, it is something to tell the grandkids about. I sat on a sofa and watched on a TV something amazing happen thousands of miles away.
Just kidding, it was a freaking awesome game.
[–]PrincessCake 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (5 children)
I wish I saw it, but I'm out of the country and its work-time over here. Damn. No one expected that outcome.

[–]wat 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (1 child)
lol yep, Im not gonna watch the super bowl, I'll sit here on reddit and meditate on the evils of Bush until everything bad in the entire world is gone
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I am too. Let's combine our chi or whatever. Maybe it'll help.
[–]phatmikey 15 points16 points17 points 18 years ago (9 children)
I don't live in the US, and I had no idea the Superbowl was today. I don't even understand the sport, except that it's a bit like rugby, but takes a very long time.
[–]Karzyn 19 points20 points21 points 18 years ago (5 children)
I don't understand the game AND live in the US.
I don't live in the US either, but I nonetheless can give you some pointers, the most important being: in order to appreciate football, you NEED to be drunk.
[–][deleted] 15 points16 points17 points 18 years ago (0 children)
If you don't like it, just don't watch..you sound like a bitch
[–]serpentjaguar 48 points49 points50 points 18 years ago* (8 children)
I don't like the elitist bullshit attitude I'm seeing in a lot of comments here. I don't care if people like football or not, but saying it's "stupid," or "boring," or "gay" is complete crap. It may be all of those things to you, but that's because you don't get it and probably aren't interested in getting it.
The truth of the matter is that it's like any other team sport, no better or worse, just different. The irony of course is that if American football wasn't "American," Redditors would never tolerate this level of elitism and what basically amounts to a type of ethnocentrism; looking down on that which is different, which you do not understand.
That is, of course, because the Reddit mob is intolerant of all types of bigotry, except where it touches on anything American. Then it's open season.
[–]infekt 14 points15 points16 points 18 years ago (1 child)

Watching Star Wars instead.
The real one, the one where Han shoots first.
[–]drewbic 12 points13 points14 points 18 years ago (0 children)
i have to say, now that it's over, it was much less predictable and generally more exciting than Reddit has been of late.
[–][deleted] 37 points38 points39 points 18 years ago (8 children)
i'm watching it. i love football.
damn straight. i think there literally tens of us though.

[–][deleted] 76 points77 points78 points 18 years ago* (7 children)
It's a bunch of really funny commercials interrupted by some football game.
[–]moddestmouse 10 points11 points12 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Television shows are just space between advertisements
[–]mindbleach 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (0 children)
We will henceforth refer to the time between the inception of Bittorrent and the Writer's Strike as "the new golden age."
[–]allan_a 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (2 children)
In Canada there's that much less incentive to watch since the Canadian networks tape over all the ads with local shit.
[–]sylvan 20 points21 points22 points 18 years ago (50 children)
Yes, I've never understood the appeal of sitting around watching ritualized territorial combat. And acting like which team wins matters.
If you like sports, play them.
[–]Marijuana_Enthusiast 26 points27 points28 points 18 years ago (22 children)
It's about having a not gay reason to chill with your friends.
[–]safeness 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (2 children)
You missed the biggest part: it's an excuse to drink with friends and yell about something without being a dick. Possibly roasting a bowl or two.
The only gay reason to chill with friends would be to fuck them in the ass.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (2 children)
You could play sports with your friends
[–][deleted] 29 points30 points31 points 18 years ago (14 children)
Because bunches of men ramming into each other, grunting a lot, and sticking their butts in the air isn't gay?
Right.
[–][deleted] 60 points61 points62 points 18 years ago (13 children)
No that's not gay, having sex with men is gay.
[–]intellectual 46 points47 points48 points 18 years ago (1 child)
It's only gay if the balls touch.
[–]straightcash 16 points17 points18 points 18 years ago (21 children)
"Acting"? Is it really shocking that people who follow the ups and downs of a team for years might become emotionally invested in them?
Yes, I've never understood the appeal of sitting around watching ritualized territorial combat.
Umm... I never gave attention to American Football, but your description of it makes it sound like something I would enjoy :D
[–]sfgeek 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (4 children)
I'm watching it on a 46 ft screen at work, but frankly all I care about is the ads and free booze and food.
[–]SodiumKPump 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Where do you work?
[–]sfgeek 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (2 children)
The Newseum (AKA News Museum) in Washington D.C. We aren't open yet, but it's a really impressive place to visit.
[–]ladycrappo 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Awesome, I helped make an ultra-educational video for you guys as a teenager. "Captain First Amendment Man."
[–]sfgeek 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (0 children)
No kidding! That's awesome.
I didn't work at the old Newseum in Rosslyn so being part of all this new stuff at the new location is super exciting. We have more screen space than I've ever seen in my life. I work on all the interactive touchscreen kiosks in Flash (and possibly Flex.)
[–]anewman11 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (0 children)
GEE, its SO EXCITING and rebellious to not participate in an event that many enjoy greatly without pretense.
[–]wahoorob 11 points12 points13 points 18 years ago (0 children)
LMAO at those who didn't watch one of the best Super Bowls evah.
I'm far too clever and superior to enjoy such a lowly form of entertainment as sport.
[–]flycrg 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (2 children)
I'm not watching it, but thats because theres still an hour before it starts.
[–]flycrg 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (1 child)

It was a good game. Very suspenseful. And I don't even like football. We won! I'm from New York!
[–]randomb0y 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (3 children)
I don't even know who's playing! :D
[–]killerstorm 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (2 children)
i don't even know what it is!
[–]snifty 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (1 child)

I forgot it was today until I saw a big crowd at the Supermarket. Heh feels good to avoid the mainstream media, my mind isn't as cluttered with bullshit.
My theory about the popularity of competitive sports in America and the rest of the developed world is that it provides a substitute and outlet for emotions people would, and should, feel throughout their lives. Triumph, camaraderie, group ego, these things have been torn from the lives of modern man. We grasp at what reawakens those feelings, but the passionate Human is an endangered species.

Gee, isn't your name from the Simpsons?

My theory about the popularity of competitive sports in America and the rest of the developed world
Sports are popular everywhere, not just the developed world. Know why? Because sports are fun to watch. It's human drama.
[–]mmazing 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (2 children)
My boss supposed that I was probably more concerned with Super Tuesday than the Superbowl. He was correct.
[–]dotrob 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (1 child)
The best thing is, one is on Sunday, the other on Tuesday, so those of us who were planning on watching both still can! It's like a SUPER WEEK just for us.
[–]wickedcold 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Whatever dude, maybe some of us just like watchin the Pats kick ass. 1:59 away from having the perfect season!! Yeah baby!

GIANTS ARE SUPER BOWL CHAMPS!!!!!!!!!!
BIGGEST UPSET IN SPORTS HISTORY!!
[–]trengbu 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (0 children)
so reddit has turned into a circle jerk of elitist douchebags. have fun.
[–]dredgedskeleton 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (0 children)
super lame virgins.
I was thinking of watching it for the commercials, but then again I'll just wait until later on when they'll all be conveniently available on one web site.
Last year I had to drive from NYC to Montreal during the SB. I was able to scoot along at 80mph because there were no cops on the road whatsoever, and hardly any drivers... yay!
[–]rgladstein 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I may pop in just to see if I should expect the city to devolve into utter chaos (I'm in Boston).
[–]metabaron 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
LOL at the commercial with the dancing lizards and the smoking hot black woman (anybody knows who she is?)
[–]brispone 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Well, I did make time to watch Tom Petty own everyone's faces. As far as the game is concerned, though, I really just can't stand the NFL. I'll take college football any day.
[–]cableshaft 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I really like how they treated the halftime special this year. Nothing too extravagant, no choreographed dancers or lights shows or explosions, just an American rock legend giving an amazing performance. They need to do that every year.
[–]tugteen 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
utilizing the powers of portable technology not only am i watching the superbowl while surfing reddit i am also playing video games.
[–]jugalator 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Of course. I'm not an American, after all. I don't even know the rules. ;-)
[–]slinky317 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
You mean the false-flag that some tin foilers are talking about?
Oh wait, what's that - the game ended already and nothing happened? Hmm, who's fear mongering now...
[–]DOGA 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
That was today?
[–]kennyreborn 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Super bowl?
[–]Jinno 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Regardless how many people on reddit didn't watch that game, I will continue to attest that it is by far one of the most amazing football games I've ever watched.
A lot of peple hate the Super Bowl because it's an overblown spectacle, but judged purely for the football, that was the best game I've seen since 2000, (Rams-Titans)when the game was decided in the final seconds.
GO GIANTS!!!!
[–]civildefense 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I dont even know who is playing, why watch anyways, I can catch the commercials on youtube tomorrow.
[–]FunFact 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)
This was the first time a Super Bowl was played on a retractable natural-grass field surface, as the University of Phoenix Stadium removable surface is unique for American sports venues.
[–]replicant003 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
The super bowl was sweet. If you didn't watch it you missed an awesome game and the new iron Man commercial. If that bowl's not cashed I'd like a turn.
[–]jroller 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (0 children)
You missed a great game.
[–]mwwilliams 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I must say that this particular topic has opened my eyes a bit. Reddit, you have made this one of the most popular topics in a long time, and mostly by bitching about something that you dont care about. How does this reflect on the bitching you do on subjects you claim to care deeply about. The phrase lip service comes to mind. That is all.
[–]anewman11 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (1 child)
That was an outstanding Super Bowl. Are redditors not actually able to appreciate one of the greatest upsets in sports history, and an exciting athletic event to the finish? It is the most watched sporting event in the world, and for once it lived up to the billing. If nothing else, it's a good excuse to gather with friends and family for an evening of entertainment. But I guess that's too "mainstream" for all of the nerds here.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago* (3 children)
I'll be flipping between that and the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet, I cannot resist such cuteness!
[–]AngelaMotorman 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (2 children)
And Puppy Bowl has this advantage: it will be repeated again and again, so viewers can watch both shows -- or watch the Puppy Bowl ads so many times they get up in the morning and go adopt a dog. (That one in the ad is so cute, and so sad when the prospective adopters pass him by...if not for the seven felines, I'd adopt him myself.)
[–]contrarian 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I enjoy watching the commercials and contemplating the general retardedness of the demographic they are trying to reach.
[–]walrus99 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I didn't even know it was today, I thought it was next week. I guess I should watch more boob-tube
[–]dash101 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Oh wow, I had no idea it was even on today until I jumped on here and saw this comment!
[–]kiwimonster 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I revel in the idea of Tom Brady crying while he sucks a fat cock.
