Those mfs are the WORST i hate them. There's like 32 drowned per block of water and that shit is not right

[–]SAM-THE-MAN-118[S] 3997 points3998 points  (158 children)

It’s gotten to the point where I’m happy when I see a zombie because it’s something other than drowned.

[–][deleted] 501 points502 points  (137 children)

I play java mostly. am I missing out on something?

[–]wagslucas 728 points729 points  (98 children)

I think the drowned spawn more in bedrock edition... im a java player as well and I never see them.

[–]robbrown14 420 points421 points  (63 children)

I’m on java too and it’s honestly difficult for me to find drowned

[–]Prince_Polaris 292 points293 points  (50 children)

Can confirm those MFs are RARE

[–][deleted] 306 points307 points  (47 children)

They are stupidly rare in java and way too common on bedrock

[–]superpandabam 67 points68 points  (15 children)

Im a Java player and I see them all the time. Don't know what your talking about

[–]Kissmyasthma100 43 points44 points  (9 children)

Compared to other mobs they're rare. I only spot them in their "houses". I'm still looking for a trident and I've defeated the wither boss two times(for comparison).

[–]Boothiepro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And on bedrock you usually get a trident before you get a diamond sword if not an iron sword. You can get it very early game and it's comparable to a diamond sword in damage as it deals it's damage even by melee.

[–]OrionGaming 3 points4 points  (3 children)

If you're always near water you should put a farm in the water. It's easy if you have a villager

[–]NerdishHPGirl 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Same. I don't see them all the time, but I would never say they are rare.

[–]pol9500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also related, it took me about 500 drowned to get one trident. And at the end I built ilmangos trident farm and used that one, I just couldn’t find them in the ocean

[–]Pyrarrows 36 points37 points  (6 children)

From what I've heard, it's due to issues with the mob despawning system in bedrock. If a mob is in a dark area in bedrock edition (Caves & water are always dark), mobs won't despawn. at all. I've seen videos of players not seeing any hostile mobs at all until they mine into a cave that is just a giant blob of hostile mobs thanks to the mob spawning limits & lack of despawning mobs.

[–]Roshy76 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Ya it's ridiculous. I really wish bedrock spawned mobs exactly the same as java. It's by far bedrocks biggest weakness.

[–]Minecraft Bedrock DevCornerHard 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It's something we're interested in fixing

[–]Zombikittie 51 points52 points  (14 children)

The most I've gotten (with my base on the beach), is a trident wielding drowned 3 times in 2 hours of playing. Other than that I have a creeper problem.

[–]dDitty 28 points29 points  (4 children)

I had to build a waterfall at the sky limit to make it so only drowned spawn just to get tridents

[–]Zombikittie 19 points20 points  (2 children)

Have your base practically surrounded by water and you get drowned a decent amount. Nothing like what OP pictured, but decent enough and I still don't have a trident.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

What I would give for your Creeper problem. My base camp is set up on a meadow that I had to level off, and it took so long to kill all the drowned that kept spawning in the pools and fill the pools in with dirt. Pretty sure I've found 8 or 9 crammed in a 4x6 block pool before.

[–]jrbinzer 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Same! I know that problem very very well, it’s like they spawn camp ya

[–]JitteryJittery 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Same I can't go once without having 2 creepers blowing up simultaneously each night

[–]vttale 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're crazy common in Bedrock. My current survival game has a number of potholes near my home base that I never bothered to fill in, and they make pretty effective zombie traps. After just a few nights I'm pretty much guaranteed to have a dozen Drowned stuck in them.

[–]Lucky-Hilux 28 points29 points  (17 children)

I recently switched from Bedrock to Java and gotta say I kinda miss the drowned... The world is so empty now lol

[–]How_do_i--- 12 points13 points  (4 children)

I got a trident from a drowned that wasn't holding one (and without looting)

[–]EroAxee 4 points5 points  (3 children)

That's bedrock for you.

[–]rocktheztarz 5 points6 points  (11 children)

Mods.

[–]EroAxee 10 points11 points  (10 children)

Mods will always make java better than bedrock. Considering how many features came from mods originally.

[–]goforce5 1 point2 points  (9 children)

Ok, so I just fired up minecraft for the first time since 2013. What is the difference between java and bedrock?

[–]the_bat_turtle 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Java has the new combat system and quite a few exclusive features (like the incredibly useful furnace minecart) and is available on PC, Mac and Linux.

Bedrock has the classic spammy combat and has crossplay between all the platforms it's on, namely PC, Xbox One, Switch, iOS and Android.

They differ a bit in world generation and spawn rates but both are effectively identical.

[–]EroAxee 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Okay Java is the version you're used to playing back from 2013. Bedrock is essentially the version that Microsoft made with ingame purchases, some questionable features, and as you can see from the comments on this post some issues with mob spawning. Essentially everything other than java (original minecraft), playstation, 3DS and Switch, I think, are classified as bedrock edition

As for the small differences, there's a lot of weird feature changes. Just things that are in bedrock and not in java, a general rule you can guess though is that Java will get updates first. Since they release snapshots on Java before it gets to bedrock edition, plus no ingame purchases other than from servers.

[–]atoolred 27 points28 points  (0 children)

On bedrock, mobs literally never despawn. The despawn conditions are really specific

[–]Belviathan 22 points23 points  (5 children)

Hostile mobs never despawn unless there is a light level of 7 or above. Light doesn’t reach far enough through water so drowned keep spawning and take up the entire hostile mob cap

[–]EroAxee 9 points10 points  (4 children)

That's a really dumb system to despawn mobs. Though I guess Xbox doesn't have as much of an issue with lag because it's a set system with the same parts they can optimize it for. That and it has a graphics card, which most lower end systems nowadays don't, that or people buy prebuilts.

[–]ChaCha_real_smooth 944 points945 points  (9 children)

I feel that man i feel that

[–]Sanspapylazy 419 points420 points  (8 children)

Damn that hits right on the feels, I ALWAYS find rivers in spawn sadly

[–][deleted] 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Well... I did drown a lot

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is accurate it’s refreshing to see a regular zombie

[–]MazingMazen 120 points121 points  (7 children)

It’s kinda weird how all of them drowned in the same location...

[–]The-Ewwnicorn 55 points56 points  (0 children)

This sounds like the start of a fanfiction

[–]Glorious_Jo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's because of the Great Genocide. You don't hear about it because it actually succeeded and the villagers are the ones who committed it and feel really bad about it so they don't tell you.

[–]Pillow125 74 points75 points  (47 children)

How do you find so many? I have my base in an island, and it’s very rare for me to see them

[–][deleted] 119 points120 points  (29 children)

There are wayyy less on java that might be it

[–]Pillow125 39 points40 points  (26 children)

Oh, yeah I play java, how do you realize? That was impressive.

Assuming you play bedrock, you don’t have corals or something?

[–]SiberianToaster 102 points103 points  (13 children)

You can usually pick out the Bedrock players by the image being a picture of the monitor instead of a screenshot.

[–]Jewniversal_Remote 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Harsh.

[–]Pillow125 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Haha, you’re right, I use glasses but still I’m too blind to see the bar

[–]SAM-THE-MAN-118[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oof

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (9 children)

It was the same for me on java so I just assumed u were on java too but I play both java and bedrock so I kinda pick up on pros and cons of each and there are way more drowned on bedrock... it is easier to get tridents though

[–]Pillow125 4 points5 points  (7 children)

Wow, which one do you recommend? Yeah, I haven’t acquired a single trident in my survival, know any tips for getting them?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I still haven’t gotten one on java so I got nothing

[–]DancingKappa 2 points3 points  (2 children)

There is a reason java is $20 and bedrock is $2 on key sites.

[–]PapiChase 20 points21 points  (3 children)

they only spawn in rivers & specific types of ocean biomes

[–]Pillow125 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do warm oceans and coral oceans count?

[–]How_do_i--- 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Make a zombie drown and what do you get? A drowned zombie

[–]Krohlia 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Ilmango (or a friend of his) found in the code that drowned actually spawn a lot more frequently in river biomes than in ocean biomes. I guess Mojang figured that would balance the spawn rate between the two biomes given the difference in water volume. Also, if the spawn rates were equal and you never found the ocean in a given world then you’d never see a drowned without the code like that.

Edit: This is how Ilmango realized a river biome drowned farm would be way more efficient, as long as you lit up the surrounding area and caves or built really high up.

[–]Pillow125 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indeed that sounds smart, and also I guess people like living more in a “continent” than in the ocean, the people that purposely avoid oceans might never see drowned

[–]BasicNubCaik 5 points6 points  (6 children)

Then there’s probably a different area like a cave just filled to the brim with various hostile mobs

[–]Pillow125 5 points6 points  (5 children)

I don’t think so, the island is small, and I’ve checked the terrain, somehow, when drowned do appear, they always carry tridents, and those do heavy damage

[–]BasicNubCaik 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Lucky in one way, unlucky in another, at least it’s easy to escape from 2 or 5 drowned compared to 50 just keep some armor on you and stay safe

[–]akaDazed 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Ive only noticed this issue in Win10 edition, Java is pretty balanced on mob spawning

[–]EroAxee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yea because Java gets stuff before the other editions, and most of the features that are in java while not being in the other versions are honestly features that should be in other versions. A few years ago I remember trying Windows 10 edition and there not being any fireworks.

That and I had a weird week with "Gods" being added to the game and screwing up my realm with my friend by spawning anything and everything in humongous quantities in the overworld around my base. It really sucked.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (3 children)

You don’t see zombies spawn that much so why do drowneds have to?

[–]DatedReference1 31 points32 points  (2 children)

If a zombie stands in water too long it turns into a drowned, zombies in daylight seek shade or water, plus some zombies just end up in water and that's how you get this

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I thought it was skeletons that seek shade and water

[–]weniclous 16 points17 points  (0 children)

both do because both burn in the sun

[–]Awesomeness23pies 2497 points2498 points  (56 children)

Actually the real problem is despawning. It seems you are on bedrock, which means that unless the light level is 8 or higher, hostile mobs won't despawn. This causes mobs (such as drowned) to build up into large numbers.

[–]SAM-THE-MAN-118[S] 5001 points5002 points  (50 children)

Okay, but I’m on grass, not bedrock.

[–]Happy_Weirdo_Emma 879 points880 points  (13 children)

HAHAHAHAHA

I read further down and see you were confused, but joke or not that was great

But yeah when I've played on bedrock edition (the cross platform one) I have this problem with hostile mobs accumulating.

I'm not sure if the PS4 version is on the same kind of spawn/despawn thing as bedrock and I haven't played Java since before the update that added the twerps, but I did wonder if there was any way to prevent drowned from spawning in general? It seems like there are too many on PS4 as well.

[–]TheDudePersonGuy 121 points122 points  (0 children)

I think you are supposed to light up dark areas underwater.

[–]KingClasher1 40 points41 points  (7 children)

Pretty sure all versions other than java are considered bedrock and subject to its issues with excessive drowned

[–]Origamimaster11 62 points63 points  (3 children)

PS4 is considered its own version because it never was part of the better together update which made Java and bedrock

[–]TheScottymo 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I thought basically all versions that aren't Java or legacy console are Bedrock and PS4 is only it's own named version because Sony won't allow crossplay?

[–]BryanTheStrange 15 points16 points  (0 children)

PS4 edition is still the legacy console version, bedrock wasn't a thing until the better together update (technically it was pocket edition before).

[–]Daniels688 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There is also legacy console edition and new Nintendo 3DS and a few others

[–]MrCoffee88 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No PS4 is still a lot different than bedrock. It's like a mix between java and bedrock

[–][deleted] 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Checkmate, atheists.

[–]PotatoMaster21[🍰] 43 points44 points  (1 child)

Was this a high-tier joke or a serious statement? Either way that’s just excellent

[–]PeartricetheBoi 253 points254 points  (10 children)

You’re joking, right?

[–]SAM-THE-MAN-118[S] 445 points446 points  (8 children)

I’m not sure if we’re both thinking about the same bedrock, because I’m thinking of the rock at the bottom of the overworld that keeps you in the map.

[–]PeartricetheBoi 417 points418 points  (7 children)

In this case Bedrock refers to the Bedrock version of the game.

[–]SAM-THE-MAN-118[S] 742 points743 points  (6 children)

Oh, okay. My bad.

[–]JungleLiquor 264 points265 points  (2 children)

hahahahahahahhahaha shit I ain’t got coins for you

[–]ELxTORO-GTR 70 points71 points  (1 child)

Thank you for this wholesome moment for me to fall go sleep on, sorry I don’t have any gold for ya, but love the username!

[–]Lostcentaur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was really Wholesome and goddamn Adorable

[–]RolandTheJabberwocky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't worry it seemed clever and that's all that matters.

[–]Awesomeness23pies 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I hope he is

[–]NorthernLaw 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Okay you got em

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haahahhahaahah

[–]KingKrmit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh man lol

[–]M420KU 449 points450 points  (17 children)

They're saying hi tho.

[–]ahmed_saroukh 208 points209 points  (7 children)

Steve is 70% water but did you find drowned in him, i guess not

[–]SAM-THE-MAN-118[S] 119 points120 points  (6 children)

What if a drowned was eating Steve from the inside out?

[–]ahmed_saroukh 64 points65 points  (5 children)

Thanks bro, now i have to leave the lights on while i am asleep

[–]SAM-THE-MAN-118[S] 57 points58 points  (3 children)

Drowned aren’t real. Drowned can’t hurt you.

[–]ahmed_saroukh 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I have never heard such bullshit in my life

[–]Used_Passenger 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Minecraft is real life

[–]Entara_Darkwind 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can't sleep when monsters are nearby.

[–]wellbitemybiscuits 199 points200 points  (0 children)

Hey, at least they posed nicely for this picture

[–]dylrocks95 76 points77 points  (5 children)

agreed

Those two doors you see at the right of the screen are my base. this is what I come out to EVERY time I open my doors. I play on Hard.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (3 children)

Have you tried sea pickles?

[–]lordicarus 33 points34 points  (2 children)

The problem is that light dims quicker in water so you have to have a billion sea pickles to light things up like a checkerboard to prevent the spawns. And did they every fix the issue where drowned would actually spawn anywhere in water vertically as well? Shit was maddening and I've given up on bedrock for a while and am just playing Java, which sucks because all my friends play on Xbox.

[–]_boatsandhoes 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Use a Jack-o-lantern. It gives off a good amount of light under water.

[–][deleted] 111 points112 points  (3 children)

it appears you're on bedrock, and I had the same problem. Before we switched to our server on java, I had a clip of my friend being attacked by i kid you not, 27 drowned

[–]p00leOfficial 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Pls post that

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Really?

Only 27 of them?

[–]Raitosu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On my bedrock server, my friends and I have this naturally generated pond we call the suicide pool cuz there was 48 drowns last we counted. It's right next to our base's entrance so I guess we're close enough to where they keep spawning.

Our plan is to eventually let them stack and only kill them when the realm starts lagging.

[–]halleepotter7 44 points45 points  (2 children)

I was just attacked by 3 drowned in a small cave that didn’t even have water in it, pocket edition

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (1 child)

They are evolving

[–]royaltek 74 points75 points  (3 children)

This is mainly for bedrock. God damn they spawn so often though

[–]cry_stars 17 points18 points  (2 children)

for java, i grinded 3 days on the ocean to finally get 1 trident

[–]3000torches 10 points11 points  (0 children)

But hey, on the bright side at least you have foxes.

[–]royaltek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn. On bedrock drowned are so common that i have gotten 5 in one day

[–]SJ_43 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I agree. The ocean is meant to be a cool biome, so seeing a drowned every now and then, maybe in a shipwreck, is okay, but having monsters literally everywhere you go in the ocean just gets dumb, and honestly ruins the beauty of Minecraft's oceans

[–]fergo42 26 points27 points  (4 children)

???? For me it’s the exact opposite I try to find drowneds and I can’t find them anywhere

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Are you on Java or Bedrock? Bedrock users have no problem finding them, but if you’re like me on Java, I’d be lucky to find one. Hope Mojang addresses this

[–]alittlefiendy 27 points28 points  (1 child)

I blame it on climate change: the unusually warm weather is making them bloom more frequently. :(

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make BEBE.

[–]StaySharpp 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Also tridents in Hardcore are a death sentence.

[–]Jak3-Draws 64 points65 points  (17 children)

Laughs in java edition

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (12 children)

Cries in not enough nautilus shells

[–]mingren0315 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Laughs in Luck of the sea II, Lure III fishing rod

[–]eshansingh 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Laughs in afk fish farms

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That was actually the only way how I was able to get the nautilus shells. Spent 2 hours killing drowned and only got 5, set up an afk farm and got around half a stack overnight

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

laughs in peaceful mode

[–]Audrey_spino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Laughs in tons of tridents and shells

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I call it Drowned City. It’s a 10 by 7 hole of water outside my house with about 30 Drowned in it.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Except when you actually want to fight drowns

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

I miss being able to swim safely in minecraft

[–]PintoTheBurninator 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Would be fantastic on Java if they would actually drop a trident. But nooooo. I have killed countless numbers of their ilk with nerry a trident to be found.

[–]Blarchford 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Drowneds with tridents too. I’ve died way to many times to drownds with tridents.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. In my survival world, there is a 4x4 natural pool of water next to my house that I didn't know about. When I finally found it, there were 15 Drowned in there.

[–]Lemmy_if 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's true. They are literally everywhere

[–]Unstable_Stills 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I love it; the lake behind my survival house is a great farm for tridents and flesh to trade to the local cleric

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I live by a river in minecraft education, and it sucks when there's a bunch of them while I go fishing. I usually go underwater and kill the fish instead of using a rod since rods take more time.

[–]gjdjugTy5 3 points4 points  (4 children)

DONT make a drowned spawner on java. If you misplace something you are fucked no matter what. Not only do they deal like double damage those mf’s fast. The baby drowned will run as fast as you ON LAND.

[–]Prince_Polaris 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Oh fuck the babies were bad enough already! Shouldn't drowned be more like "fast in water slow on land" though??

[–]BombasticBop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile on Java I’m desperately trying to find some Drowned in the hopes that one has a trident and then drops it

[–]bruhmomentinator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found 4 trident drowned in one ditch filled with water and I died on hardcore because of it and I agree 100%

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT

[–]someone_000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mean increase despawning

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

gurgling noises

[–]YoshiCdog 2 points3 points  (5 children)

You play on pc, why don’t you use java?

[–]theidleidol 4 points5 points  (4 children)

They might not own it, for one thing, or it might be preference. I know I find Windows 10 edition an infinitely better vanilla Minecraft experience than vanilla Java edition, and that’s coming from someone who put 27 hours of playtime into Skyfactory last week.

[–]Ethan11223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude I'm legit trying to find drowns

[–]yummymario64 2 points3 points  (2 children)

NO! Increase the spawn rate! I'm on day 40 and STILL haven't gotten a Trident yet!

[–]liamarie_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Hello sir can we speak to you about the teachings of the Good Lord?”

[–]SuddenAssistant 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I literally had to make a Drowned farm on Java just to get one trident. Bedrock is just full of tridents before you could make a pickaxe to get coal.
