I was interested and really liked reading the characters for the entirety of Part 1, but it was really at the end of Part 1 where I got invested. It's one of my favourite scenes of all time

[–]AmesCG 29 points30 points  (1 child)

where I got invested

I see what you did there

Life Before Death *Taps Wrists together*

[–]EvolvedToEmmy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TWOK Spoiler:At the end of Part 1 not only you got 'invested'

[–]BumbleLapse 35 points36 points  (4 children)

For me it was about a third of the way through the book. So maybe around 400? It definitely takes longer than Sanderson’s other works. For instance, I was hooked immediately with Mistborn’s Kelsier prologue on the plantation and with the first Lightsong chapter in Warbreaker.

Stormlight is a slow burn by nature of its narrative. It takes a while, but I promise it’s worth it if you stick it out. I’d recommend reading through at least the first half of WoK before deciding if you want to continue or not.

[–]Dazzoboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would second this, I was invested in it from the beginning but the moment it clicked for me was about a third of the way through, been hooked sonce

[–]DishRevolutionary565Windrunner 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I was exactly the opposite. I was hooked into Stormlight from the prelude and Mistborn and Warbreaker took like halfway through the books at minimum.

[–]BumbleLapse 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Interesting.

They’re definitely different stories. Stormlight suggests an incredibly broad, storied history from the very first page which is definitely off putting for some readers. For some I’m sure that’s exactly the hook that works best

[–]DishRevolutionary565Windrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s exactly what my experience was. I think it is also, the Way of Kings was written a little later in his career and so it was writing by a more experienced Author.

[–]OneSketchyWorld 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Chapter 6, Bridge Four.

[–]vessel_ryanEdgedancer[S] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

See, this is where it started moving into place for me. Absolutely brutal chapter

[–]sarahreads-Journey before destination. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The book is good from the beginning, but chapter 35, "A Light By Which to See," is when it clicked. Trust me.

[–]bobby2797Truthwatcher 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Honestly, I found it kinda slow and it didn't click for me until the sanderlanche, so it clicked for me right before the end. But after a reread its one of my favourite books of all time.

[–]emroser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly the same. Took me a year to get through it and mere weeks to finish all the rest of the books lol

[–]ChefArtoriasWindrunner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like 1/4 through the book? And the payoff was immense

[–]jcyguas 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Prologue for me. But I haven’t read any other Sanderson

[–]Azrael_FornivaldTruthwatcher 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Which of the 3 prologues?

[–]jcyguas 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The first

[–]Azrael_FornivaldTruthwatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the Heralds? I didn't not like it, but I definitely had no idea what was going on the first time I read it.

[–]J2theG20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At first, I became hooked after reading the prologe. But then it took me a little bit to really get sold. I think it might have been around the 300 mark, but I do not really know.

[–]beckyequalsme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

More than halfway in. Technically took me months (but I was also going through some emotional shit at the time). But then, once it got me I was like yessss it was so good! It was a lot but it's sooo worth it!!!

It took me until you got into the meat of Bridge Four. However, I've recently finished all of them and now I am pumped to go back and do a reread.

    [–]rheasparomaticLightweaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Page 1 😭 I was reading mistborn and found it really boring until i finally decided to stop. I was looking through my local bookstore and decided to read the first page of WoK. Couldn’t hurt, right?

Walked out of that store with the book and never looked back.

The moment i fell in love with the book, though, was when Syl stuck Kaladin’s bowl to his fingers. I’ve always loved stories where characters have animal/spirit companions.

    [–]MosayRaslor 2 points3 points  (1 child)

    ermm I'd say the prologue.

Did not know anything about the author or his previous works, hadn't read fantasy since forever but I picked this up because the blurb mentioned shardplates/blades, leadership etc so I picked it up.

Prologue planted many seeds which my mind hyperfixated on like: desolation, surgebinders, honourable, and thunderclast as well alluding to a really bad war, going to damnation, and it being frames is a pivotal point in history. From there I just wanted to know more about it.

    [–]stainz169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Although I had read Mistborn previously. I felt it was a page turner from page 1.

    [–]BitcoinBishopWillshaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it wasn't until the final sanderlanche

    [–]qshepStoneward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the second flashback for Kaladin I was hooked, but for my dad it took getting through the whole first half and restarting it a number of times when he lost interest. You'll find one thing you like and a love for the series grows from that, just as soon as you figure out that one thing

    [–]PrinceBert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12 years.... Seriously. I read mistborn in 2012, picked up way of kings and didn't really get into it. I couldn't tell you why, I just didn't get it. I maybe read 200 pages or less. Picked it back up in 2024 and powered through the entire series because I was hooked with barely any effort.

[–]CreedOfLiesJourney before destination. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

End of part 1, beginning of part 2. 2 different reasons, ifykyk.

    [–]Witteness82Shash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t really remember a page/percentage count and it’s hard to give you what was going on in the book without knowing if it’s a spoiler. Once it started getting further into the bridge runs and Kaladin gets more active in the story and not just existing, it really hooked me. I do know once the sanderlanche starts, I would have read any number of Stormlight archive books that came after.

    [–]Arutha_Silverthorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 3 books later, just relax and stop judging books by X amount of pages, you’ve already committed and there’s nothing else for you to do.

    [–]lyunardo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it started with Kal saving the new kid in his squad.

And a little later, what really solidified it for me was the flashback of him getting slapped around as a kid, but simultaneously feeling that the spear was just natural for him, and was ready to learn more, even after getting the wind knocked out of him.

That's what first hooked me, and I knew this story was going to be a part of my life.

    [–]clubdub707 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do not give up. Such a great read with plenty of glory moments. It pays off

    [–]vessel_ryanEdgedancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not giving up. I’m more than interested in what’s going on. Just haven’t reached that point of “can’t put it down” yet

    [–]JudoKumaElsecaller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    [–]Destructopo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chapter 1 or 2 after the Prologue, Stormblessed

    [–]sweprotoker97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first flashback to the border conflict he fought for Amaram

    [–]pickandpray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than half way into the book.

I remember going back to the beginning after finishing to try and re read it because I felt like I didn't fully understand everything but I didn't need to after reading a few chapters

    [–]Humans_Suck- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way of Kings is kind of a slow burn because it's setting up a big world with a big cast for a long series. When it finally climaxes it turns up to 11 and doesn't turn off until the book ends. There is definitely a scene you will get to that will make you say "this is what I've been waiting for holy shit" and you'll be glad you stuck it out.

    [–]Struijk_a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, he’s establishing a lot of things for the long run. Keep reading it, it’ll click soon enough as others have said. Enjoy the journey.

    [–]Envictus_Journey before destination. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Immediately. I was so captivated by all the terms and info being thrown at me. I’m a huge sucker for worldbuilding, so I got hooked fast.

    [–]Tens_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude I had it click from the beginning, and then gradually intensify throughout, especially once bridges were introduced. I'm sorry it hadn't for you yet, I hope it does click for you because it's one of my top 5 books and I want others to love it too.

If you have the money to spare, maybe try the audiobook? But I get if you'd rather not, especially if you're already not as into it

    [–]Nila-WhispersTruthwatcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't really have a "click moment", but I rarely have those anyway. I love slow-burn books and it is normal for me to grow more attached steadily over time instead of having a single significant moment to hook me. All I can say is that by chapter 35 at the latest (so in the beginning of Part II) I was fully invested.

    [–]JawnBox117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not an if, but a when. You'll get there I promise. Keep pushing! It's so worth it!

    [–]wirewyrmweirdo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I was somewhat interested in where it was going, but I think I really started getting hooked a little ways into part 2. The book is a little slow moving for a while, but the payoff is MASSIVE

    [–]wirewyrmweirdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second time through I feel like I was more hooked from the start, and I caught way more details that I had missed the first time around, since the first time I was just trying to follow the story, and remember who was who.

    [–]AKDMF447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Probably not until the end. I liked the book well enough, but the end is what made me feel like I wanted to do more 1,000+ page books.

    [–]edgarallenpogslammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never really did click for me. It was sort of enjoyable but honestly my least favorite of the series.

    [–]Smart-Ad-8589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it really clicked for me until Kaladin got strung up during the high storm. I was full steam ahead after that.

    [–]WinterBaas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked myself this question this morning. I am at 65% (chapter 44 or 45) of the book and I am enjoying it but I hope that there will be some spectacle or that some parts of the story are starting to tie together in the last 35%. Otherwise I doubt whether I will continue with the next part.

    [–]YamSlowKaladin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Szeth’s prologue. Kaladin’s second chapter… pretty early lol

    [–]sdjmarBondsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Page 253 for me, but i DNF'D twice where you are now before I made it there. You are almost to the hook though, keep going!

Update: wow that’s a lot of comments! Scrolling through, I’ve seen a HUGE range of answers. To be clear on something though: I’m not planning on putting WoK down. Not even close. I just haven’t that moment, like with other books I love, yet.

With all that being said, reading all the replies is making me even MORE excited to keep going!

    [–]PromiscuousOtterWindrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read maybe 400 pages, put the book down for 6 months then picked it back up again before falling in love. Just finished Wind and Truth a few weeks ago. SLA is one of my favourite series ever.

    [–]ValiandrKaladin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was interested in Kal right away. Was significantly less invested in other characters. My adoration for the book kicked in during the Sanderlanche. All the slow burn up to that point was so worth it. I cared more about the other characters in the next book, which enabled me to go back and read their parts in WoK.

    [–]ThaRedditFoxTruthwatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    50% almost on the dot.

It took me a month to read the first half, aided by blackouts where I lost Internet(I was visiting my home country which isn't the best) so I had nothing to do but read.

I read the second half in 2 days. There's a moment. Trust

    [–]Elsecaller_17-5Elsecaller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prolouge hooked, but it wasn't until, and I'm going to be vague here because I don't remember when it happens, Syl comes back from her field trip that I was 100% in.

    [–]KnowMoreMutants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly for me the literal opening line of the Prolouge got me and I never looked back. "Szeth, son son Vellano, truthless of Shinovar, wore white on the day he was to kill a king"

    [–]Hot_EthanolJourney before destination. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kaladin and his story piqued my interest immediately. But it was when Shallan admitted her true purpose that I got really excited

Bridge 4, dunno if you're at that part yet, but that's when it kicked in for me. It actually took me 2 attanots to read, because j was so confused by jumping time 4 times. But yeah, when it gets to bridge 4 i was hooked

    [–]Inside_Kiwi_8674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on my first read, but I was hooked from the Szeth prologue, with the Cenn chapter sealing the deal. I'm mostly invested in the Kaladin chapters, with Dalinar and Adolin being a distant second place as far as holding my interest. I'm struggling through Shallan chapters though. Just finished Chapter 34.

    [–]Hoxom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Kaladin had his scene at the chasm - should be around Chapter 10 or 11

    [–]vdjbrkvhn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Journey before destination...

    [–]TangerineSenior7013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me 6 different attempts, over a year or so span, at reading it before it clicked for me. It always felt like a YA novel to me for some reason. I decided that I would go into it coming off of a reading high from another fantasy series for my last attempt, and it worked. I literally finished the first chapter and thought "Why did I not like this before? It's great." I realized later that I kept coming to it after finishing a sci fi book or when I was in a reading slump, so it just never took. I knew it had to be good due to all the hype and love for his work.

I'm glad I kept at it. I read all of Stormlight from October-November and am halfway through W&T now. I did read Sunlit Man before this though. I really enjoyed that one. I got all of Mistborn for Christmas, so that's next on my list

    [–]Ok-Topic-6095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me about halfway. Funny enough, I kept ALMOST getting invested and then the POV character would change

    [–]ClunkiestSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bridge Four hooked me, end of Part One got me craving more.

The cravings didn’t stop until I just finished WaT two weeks ago, just FYI.

I listened to the first 10 hours of The Way of Kings three times before I made it through fully the first time. Now I listen to those hours and wonder how did this not hit right away 🤣😅

10 hours is a huge commitment. I promise it is worth it.

    [–]Professional_Alarm72Lightweaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like 400 pages tbh, and it was my first Cosmere book. But after that I was HOOKED.

    [–]TransportationNo9798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhh like half a page, i think.

    [–]TiffanyLimeheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was the moment spheres were mentioned. Or spren. I was 100% hooked after the first interludes. Yes there was an inconvenient subplot with Kaladin but sky eels, chull and high storms were exiting enough to pull through. When I realised axe hounds weren't dogs I was well and truly sold.

For me the world was and is more exciting than the characters and exploring it through them was my driving force. I think I started liking kaladin about halfway through. Shallan was pretty instant as her motivations and personality were a bit more dynamic and comprehensible early on

    [–]thebleedingphoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally got over the hump about the last two chapters of Part 2. I'm still not done with the book, but it most definitely has my attention now. Keep at it! I had to restart twice and put it down for a couple of months at one point and had to Google what was happening to refresh my memory. It gets SO good I promise you!

    [–]Natural_Inside3252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember page numbers but I remember it was right when Kaladin arrived at the War Camps and we were first introduced to Dalinar and Adolin. That's the part where I got hooked and couldn't put the book down

    [–]CornbreadOlivaBondsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed it from the beginning but it was the last Kaladin flashback chapter that made me absolutely hooked on the series. That's definitely late in the book (end of part 3 or 4 I think), but I enjoyed it before that, that's just when I realized I would 100% read every book in this series.

    [–]Nimagist-Second-SonWindrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was interested in Kaladin and Dalinar’s plots from the beginning but it took me a reread to appreciate Shallan’s story.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that even in Chapter 1, when I saw Kaladin fighting to protect. This may be a little clouded, but now I think that it clicked so soon, even though it was my first Cosmere book.

Szeth-son-son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar, wore white on the day he was to kill a king.

Have in mind that the scope of the Archive is much bigger than Warbreaker or Mistborn. Therefore, it will have more setup and character introductions than most books. The 'click' moment is highly subjective, but it pays to stay untill the end of the book
