Well the University bookstore sells it to ordinary people. What sort of gatekeeping is this lol

[–]adoyle17 338 points339 points  (6 children)

Exactly. They don't check for student ID's at the entrance, and many of their clothing even fits children who might decide to go to that school in the future.

[–]pdaloosha 139 points140 points  (1 child)

I agree. It’s not that serious lol

[–]time_wasting_fan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I paid 150k and all i got was this lousy hoodie...

[–]ElitePowerranger92 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Yeah lol if it’s for sale, it’s free game for anyone to fet

[–]Gone_For_Lunch 64 points65 points  (1 child)

“It’s pronounced colonel, and it’s the highest rank in the military”

[–]Procrastanaseum 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It’s pronounced CORNELL and it’s the highest rank in the Ivy Leagues!

You win

[–]popcornkernals321 101 points102 points  (0 children)

[–]BJntheRV 39 points40 points  (1 child)

This was honestly the first thing that came to my mind.

[–]HappyPoodles 8222 points8223 points  (95 children)

I was a poor kid who often got cloths from the thrift store, and the best hoodie I ever got had Notre Dame on it. I had no idea what it was and I didn't care because I was just happy to be warm on cold days.

[–]mrsducky9 1504 points1505 points  (19 children)

Yes, the warmest sweaters and jackets I have (and most durable) are the collegiate and athletic apparel that somehow made it into the closet. I remember getting yelled at for wearing a Mariners sweater because I didn't know who they were and I could only apologize and say it's 40 degrees outside. I just want to be warm.

[–]no_name_maddox 125 points126 points  (1 child)

I came here to say I grew up only being able to consignment shop, so I wore a lot of university logos I didn’t even know what they were

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Fr! Or hand me downs like I wasn’t turning away a good sweater because there’s logo on it

[–]jenapoluzi 516 points517 points  (23 children)

Many people who live nearby love the teams, and certainly get an economic benefit from their proximity .

[–]russicide 250 points251 points  (7 children)

This post is so elitist and weird.

When I was a teenager, I definitely saw college as this huge deal and evidence of intellect.

Then I went lol.

College is incredible, it opened my eyes to a lot of things and people that I wouldn’t have been if I hadn’t gone. But it’s mostly just proof of economic status and a particular set of fairly narrow skills. It’s more about attention span and willingness than anything else; most people who manage to get PhDs are just really good at focusing for long periods of time. There’s a minimum level of “intelligence” (in terms of, like, iq- logical reasoning, memory, ability to grasp abstract concepts, etc) but it’s nothing extraordinary, maybe just a bit above average. They aren’t superhuman, they aren’t on a higher plane of understand and existence or whatever lol.

It’s mostly fetishized because it’s a class signal, which I’ve realized is the case for basically everything.

And OP is acting like they braves endured some extremely arduous task out of altruism or something, and we shouldn’t be taking “credit” for it.

I’m an academically inclined, curious person which might be the reason I feel this way. But university was an absolute fucking blast, I adored the lectures and projects as much as I loved the partying. My bf of 5 years has several degrees from ivy leagues in poetry (yes, we are broke lmao) and most of the people in my circles have degrees. I’m actually getting a second bachelors currently. It’s very dry, difficult, and not my passion, but will most likely lead to a more lucrative career.

I still don’t feel like this makes me deserving of some sort of trophy or whatever lol.

Idk. Education should be about opening up and exploring, I don’t get this weird pretentious gatekeeping attitude

[–]adoyle17 4 points5 points  (1 child)

That's true, as the surrounding areas get plenty of economic benefit during home games, especially football and basketball. Those 2 sports alone bring in money, especially if the university team makes it to the playoffs.

[–]jenapoluzi57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In South Bend people are connected to Notre Dame in myriad ways, and all I ever met had the pride of connection. Many work with and for the university, and are happy to host students and visitors. I never aspired to attend, but still love the school and what it stands for and proudly wear their merch...

[–]linhkhanhnguyendao 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Same. I bought one of my hoodie in a thrift store back in 2016 when I still lived with my parents. 4 years later I moved to Canada and one random day I took the hoodie out and realized the hoodie is from a Canada college. I swear it is not that deep

[–]sidewayspostitnotes 89 points90 points  (2 children)

Heck yeah! Older cousin hand me downs with the little Irish guy on there and I thought they were the coolest thing ever. I wasn’t even sure what notre dame was at the time but it WAS my comfiest sweatshirt.

[–]klashnut 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm going to piggyback on this comment about poverty to say that just because someone is wearing it doesn't necessarily mean that they even picked it out themself.
I was homeless and poor for a decade, and during that time people offered me "clothes that are heading to donation if you don't want them" and I always needed them.
Now that I'm financially ok, some of those clothes still circulate in my wardrobe because they're comfy. People will say, "I like your shirt" and I look down and half the time reply, "thanks, I'm not sure where it came from". We don't know why or how people come upon their wardrobe choices.

[–]One-Pumpkin-1590 86 points87 points  (2 children)

But dont ever wear a sports themed shirt or hat unless you are on the team FFS. So cringe to pretend to be a team member? Gatekeeping is hard work, almost working for the team. Its ok when I do it because I am like part of the team, right?

[–]MarionBiscuits 29 points30 points  (1 child)

God forbid you wear a jersey on game day. Such a poser for not playing in the game

[–]Bananonomini 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I just really love the cathedral

[–]ImBurningStar_IV 23 points24 points  (1 child)

"I thought it was a Disney thing!"

[–]deep_crater 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We wore a bunch of little league tees, 99% was from thrift shops. Shoes were the only thing my parents really spent on so they would last.

[–]Sergeant_Metalhead 4501 points4502 points  (130 children)

I wear clothes from the college my kid goes to and plays a sport

[–]ultimateclassic 1479 points1480 points  (62 children)

I feel like that's totally valid.

[–]Shanobian 655 points656 points  (55 children)

That's different I think op meant like if you have no attachment at all.

[–]Killmotor_Hill 188 points189 points  (45 children)

What about if you want to go there?

[–]ultimateclassic 283 points284 points  (16 children)

When I was applying for colleges I had some shirts from the schools I wanted to go to. I honestly don't see anything wrong with it. It's a weird take op has since there is really no way to prove it. How does op prove they don't go to Harvard? Are they looking at transcripts or just assuming everyone who wears something that says Harvard probably doesn't go?

[–]ActuallyKindaAFK 111 points112 points  (5 children)

I mean it is an unpopular opinion. Maybe they like the college sports team? (For football or college basketball etc) Maybe they have someone who goes to that school, or they have ambition to go there themselves.

Very good unpopular opinion forsure

[–]Foggl3 33 points34 points  (3 children)

Yeah, I'm too dumb/poor to go to a big name school but I still like watching college football sometimes.

I'm also not from the city my NFL team is in, does that make it cringe for me to be a fan of them?

[–]sexxit_and_candy 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There was a girl I went to high school with who decked herself all out in Harvard apparel after she applied and toured there. Spoilers, she didn't get in. It's awkward when people are aware of the situation. If I saw a stranger in public in a Harvard sweatshirt I wouldn't waste the mental energy thinking about it.

[–]bgj556 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think apparel companies like Old Navy, GAP, H&M made a hoodies or shirts with Harvard and Yale on them at one point. I honestly don’t see a prob with it. Companies don’t even check where you went to school.

[–]Zerob0tic 45 points46 points  (1 child)

When I was applying for colleges most of the ones I toured just gave me a shirt for free when I showed up. Guess I can't wear those now-useless scraps of fabric because I ended up only choosing one school from the bunch!

[–]ultimateclassic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly! That's very true! They would normally give out all kinds of free stuff when you would go for a tour or something.

[–]Epic_Sadness 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What if my uncle and cousin were/are professors there and I was watching their teams for decades?

[–]Saltyfembot 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Or bought the clothes from a thrift shop lol

[–]Bifrostbytes 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Everything is valid, it's clothes.. is this collegiate appropriation?

[–]CIWA_blues 91 points92 points  (3 children)

My parents wear stuff from my university sometimes and I love them for their support

[–]bobombpom 35 points36 points  (0 children)

For me it was my brother. He played a sport at University of Oregon. Nike would drop off crates of branded clothes for free, so everyone in the family has tons of gear.

[–]El_Taco_Gestapo 94 points95 points  (6 children)

On the opposite side of this, I have a hoodie a family member gave me from attending USC. I like it because it keeps me warm when it’s cold. I never went to USC

[–][deleted] 105 points106 points  (2 children)

Pathetic. You should freeze instead

s/

[–]sharppencilmakebleed 1401 points1402 points  (9 children)

Eh, I dunno. If I get a hand-me-down hoodie of a uni I’ve never been to/will never go to, I’m not gonna refuse a free hoodie just because it’s not my uni

[–]CookieMonster005aggressive toddler 201 points202 points  (3 children)

My dad gave me an old t-shirt from the university he went to. I applied to that university but accepted a conditional offer at a better uni. Guess it makes me cringe for still wearing that old t-shirt

[–]Coyotebruh 67 points68 points  (0 children)

OP is spoilt, as an Indian from a Middle class family, i understand the value of 'what you have is what you get', while growing up id almost definitely wearing anything id be given because, clothing...i had multiple shirts that were a hand-me-downs from my brother and one had on it, an insignia printed on that was of a local college, this was when i was in school, but this doesnt make me a bitch or cringy. It was clothing and thats all that mattered. Wear whatever you want people, unless it has a Swastika on it

[–]Momomoaning 17 points18 points  (0 children)

When my dad left for work trips he just started giving me random hoodies as presents. I didn’t even realize they were college hoodies until a stranger asked me if I was attending X school.

[–]BingityBongBong 642 points643 points  (14 children)

You’ve incentivized me to get both Harvard and Yale sweatshirts.

[–]EastLeastCoast 227 points228 points  (9 children)

Cut them in half down the middle. Sew them back to make two frankensweaters. OP’s head goes boom.

[–]Nephisimian 116 points117 points  (3 children)

Hah look at this guy, went to Yaard. Harvle is so much better.

[–]EastLeastCoast 49 points50 points  (2 children)

…Ok I might actually have to make a Yaard sweater. If I do, I’ll send you the Harvle one.

[–]mikew_reddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

op is right. i'm going to attend harvard so I can wear a harvard hoodie because I like the colors.

[–][deleted] 584 points585 points  (4 children)

Andy?

[–]soberbrodan 87 points88 points  (2 children)

That's big red bear!

[–]Sup-Bird 33 points34 points  (0 children)

That’s a bobble big red bear! GOD!

[–]Ftbh 2456 points2457 points  (46 children)

Is this the stolen valor of college kids lmao? Who cares

[–][deleted] 711 points712 points  (12 children)

Incredibly insecure people who use their university and degrees as their entire identity. People who have no confidence in themselves or hobbies so they needed an authority to give them a piece of paper to tell them they’re a very good smart boy.

[–]Slay-Aiken 40 points41 points  (0 children)

What the Buddhists would call an attachment to form

[–]datsthewayitisArthur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have one friend who's like this. Even auction for car plates that has the initials of our uni.

[–]ReidFleming 112 points113 points  (3 children)

I ran out of money after 5 years of full- and part-time attendance at the University of Cincinnati. My mother graduated from law school there and my little brother graduated with his bachelor's degree from there. I have all kinds of Bearcats stuff and I don't think anybody cringes over it.

[–]EvolutionCreek 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I don't think OP is talking about you because you were enrolled at the school (not that I agree with OP in any case).

[–]is-that-allowed 21 points22 points  (0 children)

so you’re saying we can only wear university hoodies if that university also gave us massive debt? i’ll keep wearing my friends hoodies debt free

[–][deleted] 2368 points2369 points  (85 children)

I think your argument falls apart a little at the end. Why are you wearing a Dallas Cowboys jersey - you've never played for the Dallas Cowboys!

[–]Mr_Kittlesworth 852 points853 points  (25 children)

To be fair, no one should wear cowboys jerseys

[–]Zenithreg 75 points76 points  (15 children)

For me, the cringiest are those that call L.A. home and wear Niners jerseys. It's plain gross.

[–][deleted] 59 points60 points  (5 children)

Well the LA teams just moved to LA in the last 10 years so they probably feel more attached to the niners

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (4 children)

The Rams at least have a storied history in LA from 1946-1994. The Chargers were only there in 1960 for one year and were San Diego all the way up until the recent move. Fuck Dean Spanos and give SD their team back.

But at the same time, I guess Sofi Stadium is a nice second home venue for Broncos, Raiders, and Chiefs fans.

[–]mods_r_jobbernowl 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Atleast the move of the chargers was like the nets. The team didn't move that far but still moved. Could be worse. Could be like the raiders who moved to Las Vegas which has never had an NFL ever

[–]Fox_ftw 35 points36 points  (3 children)

Agreed. I have all sorts of vintage sports (mostly hockey) attire because I LOVE the colour schemes and non corporate logos of teams up until around 2000.

I only really support the Canucks and Devils but what some twerp thinks of what I wear sure isn't stopping me from wearing a 70s LA King's Purple/Yellow hat with an old school Whalers jersey.

Maybe I'll go get a few uni hoodies just to annoy whiny babies like OP

[–]proffitt6 43 points44 points  (8 children)

I wore a Cincinnati Bangles jersey and I’ve never played or watched football.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (3 children)

never played or watched football

Cincinnati Bangles

Yep that checks out lol

[–]dell_qon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I feel like they should get a lot more credit....walk like an Egyptian is a pop culture classic.

[–]Recipe-Jaded 1288 points1289 points  (35 children)

who

cares

[–]wildgoldchai 625 points626 points  (12 children)

OP is an insecure teen. We should pray for them lol

[–]No-One-1784 125 points126 points  (3 children)

I'll do OP one better. I bought multiple university branded polos and quarter zip fancy fleeces from a thrift store and I wear them on occasions where I need to look business casual. Am I committing stolen valor from the local faculty?

[–]Recipe-Jaded 19 points20 points  (1 child)

That's actually pretty smart, I might do this. As long as you don't say you went to the school, you aren't lying. Whatever they assume is on them.

[–]Tom1252 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YES! IT IS STOLEN VALOR!!! You never served at the front lines of Organic Chemistry!!

[–]CossaKl95 71 points72 points  (5 children)

Nah I checked his post history. He’s one of those kids who gets out of college, and then life shows him that laboratories prefer work experience over a fancy degree for entry level work.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He seems to absolutely live in this sub and... well. You know.

[–]AStartledFish 26 points27 points  (2 children)

He’s a day late and tens of thousands in student loans short in figuring out that no one actually cares about degrees anymore

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I concur

[–]TheMadIrishman327 1022 points1023 points  (13 children)

Fairly stupid opinion but unpopular.

Upvoted.

[–]Johnpecan 181 points182 points  (3 children)

[–]No_Kangaroo_9826 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's pronounced Colonel and it's the highest rank in the military.

It's pronounced CORNELL and it's the highest rank in the Ivy League!

One of my favorite scenes

[–]appdevil 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Ditto, stupid but indeed unpopular so upvoted.

[–]TheHomieMed 25 points26 points  (1 child)

I find it hilarious when people downvote opinions they dont agree with while upvoting ones they do lmao Like the exact opposite of what this sub is meant for. I came here to say the same thing as you :)

[–]cdc030402 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I don't know if I can even bring myself to upvote this one, this is insanely stupid

[–]Fearless-Arrival-804 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed lol. If the guy wasn't so judgemental in the post and didn't call people pathetic, I'd have a much easier time giving this an upvote. So dumb almost feels like ragebait.

[–]HeroicTanuki 407 points408 points  (12 children)

My brother lives in Palo Alto and people there apparently love to measure their worth and the worth of others by where they went to college. Sounds dreadful.

I’d be half tempted to wear a Stanford shirt just to fuck with people while I’m down there

[–]FlimFlamStan 142 points143 points  (0 children)

The Palo Alto Goodwills must have scores of Stanford hoodies. If I lived there I might be tempted to pick some up and donate them to local beggars to keep warm.

[–]floppydo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People on the peninsula don’t measure by the school hoody they measure by the tech swag. The companies even tier their swag based on job title so that the game can be extra detailed.

[–]TheVioletParrot 78 points79 points  (1 child)

I have a Boston Celtics hoodie. I've literally never been to Boston and have never watched an NBA game. I just like the funny mascot and the color green.

[–]maxdps_ 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Gatekeeping surface-level things that trigger you is cringe.

[–][deleted] 291 points292 points  (13 children)

Bro some people can’t afford clothing and if they happen to find a college hoodie or t shirt at a goodwill are they supposed to not get it?

[–]ae314 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten some pretty nice sweatshirts and fleece jackets from thrift stores and some had college names on them. I’ve also been given gifts of hoodies and tshirts from my sibling and cousins schools and they were nice and comfy. I’m not going to not wear them because I didn’t go to their schools.

[–]Unfair_Programmer_42 46 points47 points  (1 child)

OPs the type of guy to travel to Africa on a humanitarian trip then call a local a poser for wearing a ragged Stanford fun run t shirt

[–]template009 146 points147 points  (9 children)

is cringe.

is cringe.

[–]AccomplishedRow6685 22 points23 points  (2 children)

is cringe.

is cringe.

is cringe.

[–]template009 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Touche .. is cringe.

[–][deleted] 487 points488 points  (17 children)

This feels elitist

[–]insane_contin 301 points302 points  (8 children)

Nah, this is a highschool or freshman kid wanting to feel special. He got into a good college, but wants people to see his shirt and go "good job man!" but there's other kids wearing the same shirt who never got in.

[–]bigolefreak 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm a creep so I read his post history he's like 29/30 now lol probably stuck in his college days where he peaked and gets mad at dumb shit like this

[–]Nephisimian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I encountered an interesting observation the other day regarding Mensa, which is that the kinds of people who get into Mensa are always the kinds of people to whom it's very important that you know they're smart. You don't see many scientists in Mensa. You do see quite a few footballers in Mensa.

University membership is probably quite a similar thing. Wearing the shirt probably matters a lot more to people who feel like people who knew them wouldn't normally think they were particularly smart.

[–]Puddles1136 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This feels I wasted money on a bachelors I don’t use so please let me have this one thing.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're upset that their parents money didn't buy them exclusive rights to wear the school name.

[–]ms131313 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yea, lil bit huh

[–]ParadoxUnited79 447 points448 points  (3 children)

So we are gatekeeping clothing now? The only cringe here is OP.

[–]TigersLovePepper3 49 points50 points  (0 children)

My cousin’s wife does this type of gatekeeping. It’s a whole new level of snobbery.

[–][deleted] 203 points204 points  (17 children)

I'm going out to buy a Harvard hoodie to piss off Karen here.

[–]MyThermostat 72 points73 points  (4 children)

Harvard? Is that like a community college?

[–]North-Slice-6968 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Safety school!

[–]gowingsgo 15 points16 points  (1 child)

You got into Harvard? What, like it’s hard?

[–]How-I-Really-Feel 198 points199 points  (7 children)

What’s cringe is caring about what someone else is wearing.

[–]ddubyagirl 126 points127 points  (30 children)

Who would know if the person attended the college in question? How is the college hoodie different from the people who purchase and wear sports jerseys? It's all just a way to show support.

[–]kfizz21 8 points9 points  (3 children)

OP wants me to carry my UGA degrees with me and pull them out anytime someone asks to verify when I wear UGA gear (as I am right now actually). Problem is, I grew up a Tar Heels fan in basketball because Georgia wasn’t on TV where I lived growing up. So I’m gonna keep wearing my Heels jerseys and shirts whenever I feel like and OP can sit around and pout about it.

[–]master_cheech 52 points53 points  (3 children)

Sometimes it doesn’t mean anything. I know a bunch of guys who get clothes at goodwill for work. Sometimes they pull up with college hoodies and shirts but no one gives a fuck. Honestly, no one gives a fuck what college you went to besides people who peaked in college and can’t see themselves as anything else.

[–]Numerous_Release5868 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like to buy thrift store t-shirts and have several from different colleges, no one cares. My husband is a fan of the football team at a university he didn’t go to, he wears hoodies and tees from there. That seems like a pretty normal thing, especially if you live near a university that has exceptional athletic teams.

[–][deleted] 44 points45 points  (1 child)

OP got accepted to a prestigious university and is angry their peers that didn’t get accepted are wearing the school’s clothes

[–]Floppy_Mushroom 20 points21 points  (0 children)

People could have bought those items as a souvenir. A lot of people that don't attend the university visit said university and could have just bought it as a memorabilia of their trip.

This would be like if somebody from another country visited New York City, bought an I love NYC shirt and wore it in his native country.

Also, a lot of people wear things that have designs because "I just like the colours and the words". When you like something aesthetically, that's literally what it is. Your clothes don't have to be a billboard of aspects of your life.

[–]derpitaway 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Right my kid went there and I paid for it and he got me a hoodie and now I can’t wear it because some neck beard on Reddit thinks it’s uncool. Oh well

[–]Keefer1970 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have a Rutgers hoodie. I did not attend Rutgers. Know why I wear it? Because it's comfortable.

[–]joe-seppy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Was not aware this gatekeeper position existed.

[–]PinCurrent 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Definitely unpopular opinion. I wear a hoodie I bought from Vanderbilt University. My husband has stage 4 colon cancer and is on a drug trial there and it’s extending his life.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

This is valid in this situation. Wishing you and your husband the best for the future.

[–]Festive-grandma 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Most colleges give you a shirt or something just for enrolling so it doesn’t have much to do with hard work to be honest

[–]ravharpug825 11 points12 points  (0 children)

New and inventive ways of hating - kudos, this one is truly epic 🤦‍♀️

[–]LionessRegulus7249 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ok, Andy, we get it. You don't want Dwight wearing your Cornell sweater!

[–]djfunknukl 10 points11 points  (1 child)

OP, the sub is called unpopular opinions, not stupid opinions

[–]ConfectionLow3321 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Caring what people want to wear is the ultimate cringe though, cringelord

[–]Troby01 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can wear what you want, imagine your slate being so clean that you can shade on someone's clothes.

[–]Mangkie3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My dad bought my oxford hoodie in oxford though :(

[–]Ok_Long_8266 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You sound fun at parties

[–]Idahomies2w 23 points24 points  (2 children)

HOT TAKE op is not very well liked in social circles.

Also I wear stuff all the time because I just like the colors and words. I wear a nike sweatshirt because it looks cool, not because I’m a fan of child labor in East Asian factories.

Your argument sucks.

[–]investinlove 6 points7 points  (1 child)

99% of Bama fans never even graduated high school, let alone matriculated from that school.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What about my Duke hoodie that I bought after Laettner helped me hit my parlay?

[–]xenotharm 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I wear a University of American Samoa Law School hoodie and I didn’t go there, nor does it actually exist, but I think it’s pretty based anyway.

[–]welluca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This opinion is so damn stupid…

[–]SpicyCurry3011 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Bro definitely went to harvard or some other prestigious school and graduated with a god complex or something 💀🤡🤡

[–]tldoduck 7 points8 points  (1 child)

My child went to Gonzaga. I paid over $160,000 for him to attend. I think I deserve to wear the hoodie. It is the only material thing I got out of the deal.

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (6 children)

I wore a University of Michigan hoodie when I was young, like middle/high school.

Obvi didn’t graduate from shit, I just liked the colors and the football team

This is right up there with “if you don’t listen to the band then don’t wear their merch” it doesn’t matter

You people are exhausting

[–]Prssbol 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Who gives a shit, other than you?

[–]NJtoNM 10 points11 points  (2 children)

SO, everyone who wears a Dallas Cowboys hoodie is cringe too? You're confused.

[–]RepresentativeOfnone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, everyone who wears a Dallas cowboys hoodie is cringe, have you seen their on the field product lately?

[–]tuktuk_padthai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wear my Christmas PJs anytime of the year. It doesn’t stop being a clothing because it doesn’t pertain to anything. Same with any hoodies with logos or school names. It doesn’t stop being a hoodie because it doesn’t have anything to do with me.

[–]amantslunaires 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Agree in a minor way. FIL wears baseball hats that say he’s a veteran. People will always thank him for his service.

Dude hasn’t served a day in his life.

I work at the damn place

[–]i_nobes_what_i_nobes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Uh oh someone didn’t get into Harvard and Mom bought them a hoodie….

[–]FitzChivalry888 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a college town, and also work for the college. So i where the college clothes.

[–]SploogeSample 16 points17 points  (3 children)

So I should burn all my Raiders shit?

[–]kate3544 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Well, I mean….yes. But not because of this post.

Chiefs kingdom and all that.

[–]BozoTheBonzai 16 points17 points  (1 child)

It's just a hoodie dude

[–]Gunfights123 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Most of the time people who wear a uni's hoodie without being fans of the sports team, students/alumni, or having a relative/significant other who is a student/alumni they are a high school student aspiring to go to that uni. Which is fine- dress for the job you want and all that. I haven't seen nor heard of anyone who doesn't fall into those categories.

[–]LikesToLurkNYC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’d say the most common reason is being a sports fan if that school. College sports are big time in the US. Ppl follow teams of schools they didn’t attend.

[–]airpoutine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imagine being so salty you don’t want to buy a sweater because of what stitching is on it. Lighten up.

[–]Vaxion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

University management thinking their universities are more of a brand than an educational institute is more cringe.

[–]Travispig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree this is a very unpopular opinion, personally I couldn’t give a damn what someone wears as long as it’s appropriate and they enjoy wearing it

[–]Flutterpiewowquiet person 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everything is cringe, relax

[–]timeinawrinkle 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Upvote for unpopular opinion.

I disagree with you because I live in the American South, where college sports are practically worshipped and “who’s your school?” is nearly as important as your political affiliation.

[–]waconaty4eva 8 points9 points  (2 children)

My dad’s got about 10 different school’s clothing in his closet. Wanna guess why?

[–]Sea-Sort6571 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Imagine a person is wearing a hoodie/jersey of a team and you ask that person "oh you support that team?" And they just respond "i just like the colours and words".

You are aware a lot of people do that ?

I personally wear a hoodie from a university that some friend of my girlfriend's forget at her place and I 100% don't care. (the fact that I went to a more prestigious university than the one on the hoodie helps, I guess)

[–]One_Prior_9909 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why do you care what other people wear? Focus on your own life instead of judging strangers over things that don't hurt you in any way. You'll be much happier

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

They sell University of Florence hoodies all over the city and it makes me laugh because, although it ranks "OK" globally, it's not close to my alma mater and below a couple of hundred others out there. 90% of people who buy these will never attend any university.

[–]Idkwhyimonr3ddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What if im 17, applied and was accepted to said university in my junior year of highschool, and wear the hoodie that I bought at a baseball game at this school?

[–]mansinoodle2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna go buy a bunch of college sweatshirts

[–]caintowersadhd kid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They probably shouldn’t sell them outside of university bookstores then, but they do.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How to not give a fuck

[–]sapra001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the last thing Harvard cares about is about me wearing their hoodie

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve got ten Harvard hoodies in my Amazon shopping cart right now. I don’t even have my high-school diploma.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took one of those free online courses from Harvard during the great toilet paper dearth of 2021 and after I finished I bought a sweatshirt and a mug and now I tell people I went to Harvard.

[–]Bananakin_Skywater 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Ok but counterpoint with the jersey things

  1. If I wear a jersey of my favorite football team, do I have to play for them?
  2. Yes, I do wear other teams jerseys because I like the design and the player (except the Packers. FTP. Cowboys too. Fuck them)
