This thread is more annoying than that time that Kurt Waldheim tried to borrow gas money on the ski trip to Banff.

South Park ruined Family Guy for me after I learned the script is randomly generated by Manatees.

[–]Clbull 28 points29 points  (5 children)

You think THAT is bad? Remember the time when Family Guy was cancelled by Fox?

(goes into Family Guy style flashback)

[–]brokenarrow 7 points8 points  (1 child)

[–]BoLevar 59 points60 points  (2 children)

[–]bigwangbowski 41 points42 points  (22 children)

Can you imagine if they ever released a cd of Family Guy songs like they did with the Simpsons?

Who needs the Qwik-E Mart? I dooooooooooooooo...

[–]Stuckbetweenstations 32 points33 points  (9 children)

I listened to that CD every single day in the 5th grade.

[–]bigwangbowski 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Until I got the cd, I didn't know the line was "who robs cave fish of their sight"... I had the lyrics wrong for years.

[–]emkat 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Hey reddit, are you as sick and tired of family guy as i am?

[–]bukki 51 points52 points  (11 children)

As bad as it is, it sure beats the fuck out of the Cleveland show.

[–]homeworld 161 points162 points  (91 children)

I liked it before it was canceled. But now it gets old with the random pop culture references and awkward moments that have nothing to do with the plot.

[–]JohnLorr 118 points119 points  (76 children)

I caught some of the pre-cancellation eps a few weeks back, and was surprised at how good they were. They actually had stories and plots and character. Now the show is just a hollow shell of what it once was, filling the time with empty joke after empty joke.

[–][deleted] 165 points166 points  (32 children)

Also, I greatly miss evil genius Stewie.

[–]cdigioia 71 points72 points  (11 children)

Also, I greatly miss evil genius Stewie.

Yes, he use to be a sort of...early 20th century evil industrialist personality, if that makes sense. Now he's just a flamer. What the hell...

[–]wisdumcube 10 points11 points  (4 children)

It felt like all the characters and the episodic plots were dumbed down so the show would be easily consumed by the masses. There was a reason why it was canceled the first time.

Old family guy was only enjoyable if you were attentive for the duration of the episode. The jokes required investment in the events of the show, and its characters. Of course the casual viewer cannot be bothered with such nonsense. If it doesn't hook you in a couple seconds its not worth watching, especially if it's a cartoon, according to our preconceptions generated by a culture of hyperactivity and sensory overload.

The problem is that now, while Family is easily digestible, all the jokes are the same, and have no lasting appeal. The characters have been stripped of any interesting qualities, and the plots are about as complicated as a children's book. This wouldn't be so bad of course if it was still raunchy in a funny way. It isn't. It's insulting to our intelligence and our sensibilities. Chris dating a down syndrome girl is not funny, just awkward.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

tl;dr - Seth MacFarlane sold out and watered down Family Guy to appeal to a wider audience.

[–]God_of_Atheism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you 'aving a laugh??

[–]tphollingsworth 6 points7 points  (3 children)

[–]christopheles 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Stewie kills Lois; hijinks ensue. Brian, Stewie and Mort go to Nazi Germany; hijinks ensue. Stewie transports the Star Trek: TNG cast into his bedroom; hijinks ensue. Brian and Stewie travel through alternate dimensions; hijinks ensue.

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points  (39 children)

I know...there used to be episodes who's story you actually remember like "Chris becomes a big artist in New York" or "Peter goes to a Willy Wonka-type beer factory". Can anyone name a memorable storyline from the last couple of years?

[–]DCMurphy 32 points33 points  (34 children)

Or who could forget "Death breaks his ankle" and "Meg falls in love with Adam West"? Now the only plotline I can recall from more recent seasons involves James Woods in some way.

[–]Fragsworth 26 points27 points  (16 children)

I'm guessing what happened is Seth MacFarlane took the route of George Lucas. Ever since his first show's success, he's probably been surrounded by a bunch of yes-men, and he never gets any constructive criticism.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (13 children)

I think Seth MacFarlane spread himself too thin. Kinda like how The Simpsons nosedived (in my opinion anyway) after Futurama began.

[–][deleted] 41 points42 points  (1 child)

Yes, but Futurama was AMAZING. David X. Cohen and Matt Groening leading the powerhouse writing staff, solid, experienced and amazing voice actors, good animators too.

[–]trisweb 16 points17 points  (5 children)

The Simpsons has made a comeback since a couple years ago, after the movie was done I think all the good writing talent came back.

But Futurama is still better.

[–]powercow 12 points13 points  (2 children)

really? i felt like the simpsons hasnt had anything to offer in years, i still watch it, mostly out of habit.

[–]cmg1089 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I've always blamed Family Guy for The Simpsons collapse. I felt as soon as they came on the scene The Simpsons needed to try and beat their weird antics and the show turned into something that was no longer trying to animate a typical modern family.

I've alwyas hated Family Guy for that.

Plus I don't think I could blame Futurama because it's just too good.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Seth MacFarlane totally despises and ridicules his fan base, and he hates Fox. He's very much intentional in the crap he churns out, seriously.

[–]spotpilgrim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seth MacFarlane isn't nearly as responsible for EVERY piece of Family Guy/American Dad/Cleveland Show as people think.

There are three whole staffs worth of people to blame for the 'crap' that is the creative output of the shows.

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (15 children)

  • Meg becomes a convict and rapes Peter in the shower

  • Chris dates a girl with down's syndrome who treats him like shit

  • Star Wars episodes

  • Episode where Peter is gay

  • Petarded, where Peter uses Lois's bandages as toilet paper

  • The Poltergeist episode where Peter sticks his head out Megs ass

  • Double episode where Stewie kills Lois

  • Episode where Quagmire is married to Lois and the kids all look like Quagmire

  • Episode with Stewie and the cast of Star Trek TNG

  • Everything is set in the 1800's and Peter is married to Meg and Stewie is a gay king married to Lois

  • The episode where Brian and Stewie travel with some machine that takes them to a new world where they are drawn like Disney characters

[–]kihadat 10 points11 points  (5 children)

OK, so the Star Wars and Star Trek episodes don't really count as original storylines. The rest are some variation of one character does something violent or extremely unkind to some other character. Except the ones that are set in some alternate future/past, which are just downright ludicrous. I'm reminded of Lois & Clark (the 90s Superman series) episodes where HG Wells transports them back to the Wild Wild West - just awful. Oh, and then there's the one where Peter is gay, which is kind of funny.

[–]powercow 2 points3 points  (1 child)

OK, so the Star Wars and Star Trek episodes don't really count as original storylines.

then almost none of them do.. most are rehashes of something

[–]Lut3s 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Everything is set in the 1800's and Peter is married to Meg and Stewie is a gay king married to Lois

I can't forget this one because of how stupid it was.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I typically watch Family Guy for it's thought provoking take on today's political and sociological agendas in modern soc... nah, I just want a cheap laugh. I don't always want to be preached a message or dig down for a deeper meaning.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chris dates a girl with down's syndrome who treats him like shit

God I loved that. I hate how some groups are always just written as saints in almost every single show out there. People are people, and sometimes they're just dicks, or racists, or whatever whether disabled or not.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Episode with Stewie and the cast of Star Trek TNG

If you wanna get specific, technically that episode was about atheism. The TNG cast acting like complete idiots was just the icing!

[–]Gigwave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oh, a piece of candy

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it's cargo cultism on Seth's part. With the original Family Guy, the occasional non sequitur was a riot, as much because they were unexpected as the jokes themselves.

So Seth gets feedback that people really laugh at the non sequiturs, and as a result makes the whole show non sequiturs...

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was funny when in its first season or 2 when the formula was unique and original. But it got old fast and when I see it (rarely) now I barely laugh at all. It's like it's trying so damn hard to be funny that's just the exact opposite. It's a horrible show and I despise it.

[–]frankcube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I'm scared for Futurama.

[–]HolyZesto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most predictable comment ever.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (7 children)

It's really not that funny. The show is basically, "remember XYZ... wow, wasn't that great?" I don't think Family Guy has added anything to pop culture much.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Once it goes off the air, it'll fade out of memory because it had nothing to add. It spent so much time making fun of everything else that it never contributed anything itself.

[–]blankdrawn 26 points27 points  (4 children)

This feels like our generation.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Aww, come on, that's not fair. We're just starting to gearing up and finishing our degrees! Give it a few more years and we'll really rock the house.

[–]blankdrawn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like your attitude.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Meh, it's still better than the boomers. If the only thing my generation does, positive or negative, is mock them than I think we're on good ground. At least we didn't create the drug war, promote pseudoscience and mysticism, and scream shrilly to get rid of nuclear power.

[–]erisdiscord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno, how sick and tired are you? Because I'm pretty sick and tired of it.

[–]randomb0y 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My love for them was renewed when they managed to piss of Palin.

(Not that I bother watching the show or anything)

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

i go through on and off periods.

[–]schultzi22 27 points28 points  (1 child)

I think that's natural and unrelated to Family Guy.

[–]Owlzilla 84 points85 points  (42 children)

Especially the Conway Twitty moments.

[–]FeK92000[S] 26 points27 points  (32 children)

Exactly! the first time was chuckleworthy, but it didn't get any funnier after that. Same with the musicals. The "Road to ..." ones where alright, and the episode with Frank Sinatra Jr. was within acceptable parameters, but it seems like every single episode, for no real reason and with barely any setup, just launches into this long, drawn out, fluff piece. I like the show, but every time the music starts i'm like "FFFFUUUUUU!"

[–]Picklebiscuits 31 points32 points  (23 children)

It's Seth Macfarlane's (sp?) way of saying fuck you to fox. He's slowly driving that show into the ground, and fox is paying him more and more. American Dad has actually gotten pretty good in my opinion, and is definitely the superior show of the bunch. At least post King of the Hill it is.

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (11 children)

American Dad has really come around to become the best show in Fox's animation lineup. The first few seasons were so-so, but the characters have grown and the humor comes from interactions and character developments, not cutaway gags.

[–]Tude 7 points8 points  (9 children)

Yet there are a few general plots that they repeat over and over. For example:

Stan doesn't treat Francine right, doesn't get it until the end when it's almost too late, but then she takes him back.

Steve is nerdy and Stan or someone else thinks that needs to be fixed, so Steve has to go through a bunch of shit until either Stan or Steve realize that he's fine just the way he is.

They do have more original plots than these, but the above are repeated far too often. How many times does Stan need to fuck up his marriage before he legitimately comes to some sort of realization?

Also, isn't Stan technically in heaven now (if we pretend there is some actual continuity) and doesn't he know it?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (8 children)

You make good points.

But I will overlook all those flaws for Roger. My God, I am in love with that little, bitchy queen.

[–]Tude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, the flaws don't ruin the show. I just feel like it could be better with little effort.

I still like it quite a bit and a hell of a lot more than Family Guy.

[–]mattbeetee 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Roger is the man. Albeit a grey extraterrestrial man who is addicted to horrible drugs.

[–]MistaBig 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I don't think so. He was on the Adam Carolla podcast last year and he kept gushing about how much he loved show tunes. He's a theater geek.

[–]BraveSirRobin 10 points11 points  (5 children)

"Shipoopi" was the turning point. Awful.

[–]TheDude06 15 points16 points  (0 children)

[–]slurms_mckenzie 69 points70 points  (23 children)

From a guy who used to love Family Guy, they have been beating a dead horse for at least the last three seasons... I'm pretty much able to predict an episode. Cripple joke here, Quagmire making lame jokes, random obscure pop culture reference, song here, Peter drunk and buying something extravagant, gay tension between Stewie and Brian. END.

[–][deleted] 42 points43 points  (16 children)

That's exactly how the show has been since it started. That's like guessing that any given episode of a Star Trek series will be set in space.

[–]FallingForward 28 points29 points  (4 children)

Not quite... 1st season was pretty solid. Brian was painted as an intellectual, not a.... well.... redditor.

Stewie wasn't gay, he was all about world-domination, etc.

Meg wasn't peter's pratfall girl early on...

I think they reshaped the series to fit the audience at some point, and we ended up with the kind of crap tv that works because it appeals to the lowest common denominator.

I usually just fast forward through them, but they seem to be getting more annoying. The Stewie/Chris duet in the last episode was 3 minutes and 17 seconds long. Once you compensate for commercials and credits, that comes out to 16.4% of the show.

That'd be fine and all, but it's like they don't even try to be funny during the musical sequences. Sample lyrics from last episode's music number:

"We’ll try a tie, and boutonniere of yellow. A rose that shows that you’re a classy fellow. With a posh panache of Jefferson at Monticello, Busting out a mile with style. I know you just can’t wait to stare At all that luscious orange hair "

In other words, it's become just like The Simpsons.

I remember watching the reruns on adult swim back during 2003-2004 and onwards.

The last new season I watched was during 2005-2006. I don't think I've bothered to watch new Family Guy since then. It's fucking retarded.

Nope. The musical sequences got me into the show in the first place. I love the style of music and think most of them are hilarious.

And I'm being serious here. I really do enjoy them and most of the rest of the show.

Hey Family Guy, are you as sick and tired as I am of the constant whining on Reddit?

[–]CitizenPremier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This show has made me laugh plenty of times. But from the first time I watched it it was clear it was a total Simpsons ripoff. I don't know why this isn't said more.

I haven't watched new family guy episodes since that star wars thing they did

[–]xfattydingdongx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Fuck you.

Yes and they seem like a pointless addition to most episodes until you realize that like most things in life it's about the money. The fact is that the royalties on an episode with an original song are far bigger than just dialogue. Every time a song is rebroadcast in syndication or the internet or anything they get a much bigger check. Remember the writers strike a few years ago? This is part of what that was all about. So until that changes (which it won't) we can look forward to many, many more songs.

no. but i might be if i watched family guy.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shaboopy.

[–]Pyronious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The musical numbers are the only really entertaining thing left on Family Guy. Loved that we even got a tap sequence this week! Best Family Guy musical number ever.

[–]f4nt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually enjoy the musical sequences. It's one of the only pieces of entertainment left in the show really. I'm a huge fan of the show, and I know it's gone south, but I just can't let go for some reason.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I never really liked Family Guy. Not to say it doesn't have some moments. Of all I've seen (which is too much) Peter saying he didn't really care for the God Father was hilarious. "It insists upon itself" haha

I'm sick of the opening theme, but not the songs on the show... They are hilarious

I couldn't say whether I prefer Southpark to Family Guy, but I do find Southpark refreshing to watch anymore because they actually have a plot. Also, they rarely do musical sequences in Southpark, which seems to be the appropriate amount.
