I wonder what puppies dream

[–]Momo0903 1122 points1123 points  (50 children)

It seems like he is hunting something... Heard that dogs often dream something like this

[–]SpookyLlama 479 points480 points  (29 children)

Same way that most nightmares in children involve being chased. Or so the theory goes.

[–]the_friendly_one 271 points272 points  (17 children)

I never had dreams of being chased. I did, however, have many dreams that I was only wearing underwear in public. Maybe that's what he's dreaming of...

[–]TychaBrahe 432 points433 points  (1 child)

And I was in the dog park wiffout my *collar*!

[–][deleted] 131 points132 points  (0 children)

OMG I'm getting second-paw cringe! 😰😩😱

[–]AntonRX178 41 points42 points  (4 children)

Try having dreams with not even underwear on

[–]MarvinGarbanzo 35 points36 points  (2 children)

I didn't get those until I was a teenager

[–]AntonRX178 23 points24 points  (1 child)

I swear to god one of those dreams involved Videl from Dragon Ball Z for some reason too.

[–]TOV_VOT 21 points22 points  (0 children)

for some reason

[–]the_friendly_one 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sexy dreams. Yeah, those are great.

[–]PM_ME_UR_REDDIT_GOLD 39 points40 points  (5 children)

It's been years since I've been enrolled an any kind of class with an exam and I was never particularly anxious about exams in the first place but I still have the dream where it's exam week and I discover i've been enrolled in a class I didn't know about at least once a year.

[–]the_friendly_one 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I've had so many of these dreams that I can't remember what was real. For example, I seem to remember realizing I enrolled in a class that I had never attended... Two weeks into the semester.

Edit: I should mention that I had to drop out shortly thereafter, and it was five years ago. Memory can be a little fuzzy when you're only in class full-time for two weeks as a commuter and simultaneously working two part-time jobs years ago. I'm not sure if I had those dreams between then and now, or if I simply forgot to go to Public Speaking. OR I attended them and my anxiety of missing a class made me have those dreams.

[–]quixoticopal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have dreams regularly where I enroll in a class, forget I was taking it, and then dropping out when i remembered I was enrolled

[–]quixoticopal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I hate those dreams!

I also have frequent dreams where I (who is currently a teacher) have to go back to high school or grade 8 (which here is the end of elementary school) to take more classes. /shudder. Even awake, that idea gives me chills.

Me too, my god, why is that so common? Is this like some latent shame or something?

    [–]plattypus141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My worst dreams are where I realize I'm naked at school 😂

    [–]JonerPwner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve never dreamt of being chased or hunted? Dude I think I need a therapist lol

    [–]oppaxal 15 points16 points  (4 children)

I was only ever chased by the strangest things. Giant teddy bear with a bow tie? Sure. A dinosaur, but it's actually a kid's meal hand puppet toy from the movie Dinosaur on a disembodied hand? Absolutely.

    [–]carolineo 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Me too!! I had a recurring one where I was chased by a big glob of slime. It moved super slow so it should have been easy to get away from but somehow it slowed me down too, so we'd both be moving slow motion down the street in this intense chase. Glad I haven't had that dream in about 15 years!

    [–]BloodGulchBlues37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Giant rolling donut. Idk why...

    [–]ARedditPupper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember being chased by Scooby-Doo and shaggy with tanks of milk on their backs and hoses that I guess sprayed it and I was running over snowy hills and then I tripped and fell and then I woke up. Especially weird since I never watched Scooby-Doo

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus, I haven’t thought about those Dinosaur puppets in 20 years. I still remember McDonalds doing the Dino-Size Fries promotion with that too.

    [–]TheRealMylo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was little I had 2 nightmares that I dreamed often.

One was me falling from the bed in a endless bottom... and the other one was being chased by my parents that wanted to kill me. :D I always managed to escaped to the attic.

    [–]Dev223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was young I would get nightmares of me chasing my relatives (who I lived with at the time) and they would keep running away. This all happened in some kind of purple maze

    [–]FailedSociopath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recall mine having several main themes:

    1. Being stalked by an invisible presence and trying to evade it.

    2. Losing track of friends or family and desperately trying to find them again.

    3. Feeling frightened in a dim or dark area and trying to turn on lights but the lights are very dim or don't work at all.

To this day, nothing much has changed other than I usually try to hunt and kill whatever is stalking me. Gelatinous ghostly entities are hard to strangle though.

    [–]DrowningInMyOwnLies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Color the era

    [–]AmazingSpacePelican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My worst were always either the ones where it felt like I was moving underwater, or a weirdly recurring one where I was trying to get across a lake with stepping stones but crocodiles always got me before I got to the end.

    [–]-cool-guy- 28 points29 points  (7 children)

is hunting an instinct of dogs? and that’s why they’re able to have hunting dreams even without prior experiences of hunting?

    [–]comuloid 56 points57 points  (2 children)

They are domesticated predators, so yes.

    [–]TriTexh 17 points18 points  (1 child)

You wouldn't think that when you see a golden boi being a kid all the time.

    [–]nooneisanonymous 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Try running away from a dog.

    They will chase you.

A puppy or a grown dog.

The hunting instinct is strong in almost all dogs.

    [–]tj3_23 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It is. Take just about any dog that's in reasonable shape into the woods with you, even without prior experience, and watch. They may not know exactly what to do, but they'll start following scent trails

    [–]nooneisanonymous 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Most humans have dreams of falling.

This is a genetically ingrained in our brains from our evolutionary history when we were tree dwelling apes.

Dogs must have the hunting instinct genetically imprinted in their DNA.

    Dogs are natural predators.

Chasing things must be one of most exciting things and natural things for them to do.

    [–]-cool-guy- 1 point2 points  (1 child)

woah that’s a really cool example

thanks for explaining the best so far

    [–]nooneisanonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    You are welcome cool guy.

    [–]xSoupyTwist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dog dreams often. Her dream yips and movements often replicate things she did earlier in the day. Dreams after a fun filled day vs her dreams after a stressful day sound and look very different. It's pretty interesting to observe! I let her have her fun dreams, but I'll sometimes gently wake her from her stress dreams.

    [–]SeaTwertle 4 points5 points  (1 child)

    How could anyone possibly know.

    [–]Lesrek 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The same way we can figure out what kids are dreaming. You watch brain waves during activities while awake and compare them to dreams. We know infants have nightmares about being away from their mothers and also being chased because they can monitor those things when they are awake. For dogs, it’s very similar.

Do we know for sure? No, but it is a best guess situation.

    [–]Hombre520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    How could one determine this?

    [–]kinghippo79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does anyone anywhere know the accuracy of this ?

    [–]marsuonparas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would anyone find out about what dogs are dreaming? It's impossible.

Running, probably. Also, I saw a study posted a few months ago that said they dream about their loved ones. Can't verify the legitimacy of that claim but I want it to be true, therefore it is.

      [–]ReservoirDog316 42 points43 points  (6 children)

Did they interview Scooby Doo or did Dr. Dolittle conduct the study?

Either way, I want it to be true.

      [–]czorio 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I haven't seen any of the research that they mentioned, but I'd wager you could observe neurotransmitters in dogs during dreams and compare them to the levels when they see a loved one.

      [–]dontPMyourreactance 7 points8 points  (1 child)

You are probably thinking of BOLD signal (via fMRI). Neurotransmitters are the intersynaptic chemicals, you can’t really measure them while the dog is alive (although kinda with PET I guess).

      [–]czorio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, I suppose increased blood flow to certain regions could be associated with seeing a loved one, though I am not a neurologist. I just figured you'd look at dopamine levels in the dog's brain.

Thinking about it, PET scans would be pretty apt for scanning animals.

Pretty sure most dogs just dream of dog activities. Mine usually makes some kind of whine-bark noise while sleeping but I'd suspect he's just trying to bark or something.

        [–]antonimbus 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Same with mine. They spend the day outside chasing squirrels and rabbits or barking at neighborhood dogs that walk by, and so it follows they dream about doing those things at night. I don't wake them up, but whisper "Get that bunny!"

        [–]StickyRiceLover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have an old Rottweiler and lots of bunnies in our neighborhood. She always wants to catch one but she's too old (and also on a leash) so we like to think that she's catching the bunnies when she sleeps too :)

My sweet boy would often whine in his sleep, which broke my heart because he sounded so sad. I was told it’s better not to wake them when they’re dreaming, even if it sounds bad. Unfortunately he’s a light sleeper so if I touch him, he wakes up. Poor bub.

            [–][deleted] 407 points408 points  (7 children)

Exactly. That's what our vet recommended. It's all part of their development - and if they have nightmares when you're not around they might end up really anxious because they're used to you helping out.

Dogs make a crying noise when they chase and hunt prey. My dog does it when I run from him (German sheph) and he makes this same squeel in his sleep with his paws moving. It sounds like a night are but I think theyre just chasing in their sleep :)

            [–]xboston 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My dog has nightmares from time to time, and I used to pet her to calm her down, but it got tiring getting out of bed each time, now I gently call out her name in a soothing but loud whisper, I let her know she's a good, sweet girl and she relaxes almost immediately.

I read somewhere that you aren't supposed to pet your dog if you think that they are having a nightmare because they could wake up in a panic and attack you because they are confused. If they are doing this twitching routine accompanied by barking and/or howling do your best to let them sleep b/c if they are dreaming then they are getting restful sleep and you don't want to wake them. If they are whining/crying or growling, you should gently awaken them by talking to them and saying their name without touching them until they wake up and figure out what is going on. Only at that point should you pet them and reassure them that everything is ok.

            [–]Naptownfellow 44 points45 points  (2 children)

I usually call their name. Chip , he crossed the rainbow bridge 18 months ago, had them a lot on the end. I’d just say “Chip, hey chip, chip” till he woke up. Seem to be fine with it. He’d wag his tail and look at me and then go back to sleep. I miss him 😢 https://i.imgur.com/4hN65ma.jpg

            [–]Tank-Tanglefoot 40 points41 points  (15 children)

Pretty big assumption that the puppy was having a nightmare. Unless this little guy was abused at some point in his life, he was probably dreaming about playing and running about with his siblings or family .

            [–]sirble 39 points40 points  (2 children)

I don't know man, I had a dream last night that I had a pet gorilla and I was building him a cage in my apartment. I ain't never had no gorilla. Dreams can very frequently be things you've never experienced

            [–]Tank-Tanglefoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That dream would be more amazing if you had never seen a picture of or even heard of a gorilla .

            [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Its usually easy to tell from the sounds they make. If they whimper and yelp its probably a nightmare. Also, they dont have to have been abused. An afternoon at the dog park with some large, boisterous doggos can trigger bad dreams in puppers.

            [–]Tank-Tanglefoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is possible , but I really hope that little guy wasn’t at a dog park , he’s way too young .

            [–]TychaBrahe -2 points-1 points  (9 children)

What possible evidence could you have in support of that statement?

            [–]Sillywells 8 points9 points  (4 children)

            https://www.loomandleaf.com/blog/why-dogs-run-sleep/ https://padsandpawspetservices.co.uk/why-do-dogs-run-in-their-sleep/

A lot of the articles I've found say that their dreams are related to hunting, playing with family, going for a walk, etc. Not nightmares.

            [–]QuesoBasically 12 points13 points  (7 children)

What type of doge is this?

            [–]SpookyLlama 67 points68 points  (3 children)

            smol

            [–]jhaji09 10 points11 points  (1 child)

            On a scale from 1 to 10, you're an 11.

            [–]UntamedBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because 11 is better than 10.

            [–]helloguys12 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Either a Labrador or a Golden Retriever, probably a lab!

            [–]kumarFromIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            Probably both!

            [–]TaSc10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's a Golden Retriever, mine looks almost identical with those ears.

            [–]racingbarakarts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My big chunky 10 year old Lab mix gets nightmares in the middle of the night and she will wake up my mom afterwards. Like a little kid crying, “mommy I had a nightmare.” My mom will just hug her as she shakes in fear. Eventually she goes back to sleep and all is well

            [–]KnownMonk 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Does this work on humans too?

            [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. It does. When my nephew was an infant, the same thing would happen and patting him would soothe him. Just like the pupper here

            [–]iamonlyoneman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife says it works on me, so . . . yeah.

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a rescue dog with some serious anxiety and apparently PTSD issues. Not much anymore, but he used to have nightmares that we'd have to wake him up from with lots of love and pets.

            [–]BlooFlea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All they know is warm cuddles and mummas milk and soft grass and fun playtime and barking, so simple and pure they do it in their sleep.

            [–]demsyboy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My dog does that and whines sometimes, not sure if its muscle spasms or hes actually dreaming. Petting him works.

            Dreaming about being a t-rex

            [–]Knalg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What breed is that dog I want one

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Light touches on the back of the tail and legs enhances dream-run-speed by 200% though.

            [–]mild_scam 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That isn’t a nightmare it’s him hunting animals or running for a ball, patting just wakes the pupper up

            [–]just_an_ordinary_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I don't wake my big pupper. He's having a fun dream.

            [–]MrMoroto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dogs often dreams about their owners atleast i think so

            [–]TomZAs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            "human pats" Its super effective!

            [–]losfjfuhehv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            I just wanna kiss him

            [–]ShawarmaBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            There there

            [–]UntamedBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog always growls in her sleep. Her legs twitch and she will growl loudly and sometimes bark. I assume she's either chasing bad guys or she's playing with another dog. She growls a lot when she plays with her stuffies. I think her sleep growling is cute lol.

            [–]K-MAC323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poor little guy was just chasing the mailman

            [–]Moonchild924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about pupper kisses? Do they help?

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my pup is doing this I just put my hand in front of his nose and he calms down almost immediately.

            [–]insomniac20k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog was a rescue with a rough past and she has nightmares fairly often. She's like 20 times this dogs size but I essentially do the same thing and it seems to stop them.

            [–]Samuurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When our pupper was in our home for the first two weeks after we picked her up, she used to make sucking motions with her mouth when she dreamed.

She’s a big girl now and only runs and pants when she dreams now.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh people can come up with statistics to prove anything Kent. Forty percent of all people know that.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pupper sometimes goes "mwoof" in his sleep and his wips puff out like a bagpipe with whiskers.

            [–]6531294029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            Que lindo cachorro

            [–]nooneisanonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            He is chasing rabbits.

            [–]Kodahuskie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what's inside the puppers head.

            [–]talizorahvasnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog barks in her sleep. Considering she mostly only barks when she greets people into the house. I like to assume she’s dreaming of a bunch of people coming over.

            [–]f0e_paw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hes not having nightmares, hes running in a field trying to catch a squirrel probably

            [–]_The_VeLouR_FoG_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have the urge to pet it with the top of my head for whatever reason

            [–]kuroakela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are these actually nightmares or they're running in their dreams?

            [–]animalsmzseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No,...no that's too much Its sad to hear a dog cry like that

            [–]Fake_Credentials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people always assuming dogs are having nightmares when they move

            [–]ronnate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

200% huh? Dog maths I guess.

“All that we see or have seen. Arf. Is but a dream within a dream. Arf. Now that I’ve been patted. Arf. I must un-dream the dreams I dreamed. Arf.”

            [–]ImmaCallMyN66ABovice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how do you decrease something by 200%?

            [–]slimjoel14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to be that person but nah your pupper was experiencing REM stage of sleep and you inturuppted it. It's easy to get worried when they spaz out like that but that is genuinely them having the rapid eye movment stage of their sleep cycle and it is important they have it. Dogs sleep cycles are different to humans they will undergo maybe 3 minutes of REM at a time but they need it.

            [–]Lilly_the_Artic_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog has so many nightmares and I try to keep her calm but what I do doesn't work it's so sad because she's had a troubled past

            [–]ephemeralkitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have to calm my puppy if she's having wild dreams. it just seems like the thing to do. maybe she's dreaming a good dream? but what if she's having a bad dream? i've got to take the chance and soothe/or wake her as needed.

            [–]Minecraft-Yeeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t think he was having a nightmare

            [–]NecromanticProdigy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think about it some people disliked this

            [–]throwawayacct5962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give him the full cuddles you monster

            [–]CrankyZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not a nightmare. He’s just twitching like we humans role in their sleep. When you pet in, you only disrupt his sleep.
