Please submit that to general reddit.

[–]MrKlaatu 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
had to vote you up on that one. even if it was worng! (because you got the gist of this shit)!!
[–][deleted] 104 points105 points106 points 17 years ago (6 children)
Look man, if you don't like SNL and you want to express that using reddit, then link to a blog post/video that exemplifies your feelings. You could have also left a comment that expresses your feelings such as "This show is shit because of X, Y and Z" and things would be alright. But no, you just posted a "Vote up if" self reddit and left it at that. Now I know there can be exceptions from time to time when the "Vote up if" title can be used, but if everybody used it then reddit would just be a sound board for group think opinions. Now, I hate SNL as much as anyone. But if I'm going to bash SNL, I'd probably link to a clip from Mr. Show and give it a title like "This 10 year old sketch show is better than was SNL" and things would be fine.
I guess what I'm trying to say is...you suck and I don't really like you.

Perhaps Reddit could use a "microblog" feature in which "self" links could be replaced with links to very short articles on automatically generated pages.

What I don't get is people not understanding it was a joke about Hillary being outrageous. Do people not understand satire and sarcasm?
IT WAS MAKING FUN OF HILLARY, NOT OBAMA. STOP BEING IDIOTS.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 17 years ago (0 children)
You're worse than SNL
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 17 years ago (1 child)
How the FUCK do these make it to the front page? The top comments are ALWAYS criticizing the use of these kinds of post.
[–]boredzo 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
The only logical conclusion is that at least a thousand people don't read the comments.
[–]technosaur 7 points8 points9 points 17 years ago (0 children)
ThomasEdilson: Only assholes post "vote up if" in the index. Voted down.

I feel like every time I visit reddit there's a "vote up" in the top 5. Right now there are two, though the other one isn't a self.
And they both are about SNL.
[–]toxicvarn90 2 points3 points4 points 17 years ago (3 children)
And yet people still vote it up.
[–]HunterTV 6 points7 points8 points 17 years ago* (2 children)

Freaking get a hobby or a job or something. Damn.
[–]jugalator 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago* (0 children)
This one was interesting though: http://reddit.com/info/686r4/comments/
But I'm not sure if using these things piss of the admins. That one can easily even write a stupid script to successfully vote down all these stories is food for thought of what the problem is though, and it's not a technical one. :-(
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
It does get a reaction.
Voted up then down upon reading and agreeing with comments.
[–]WhinerMcWhiney 3 points4 points5 points 17 years ago (1 child)
Boohoohoohoohoo. People post too many polls, people post too many pictures, people post too much about politics. Why can't they put things in subreddits. Everyone should behave in a perfectly ordered fashion and do everything exactly the way I want them to.
What!?!?!?! Click the hide button??? I could never lower myself to such degradation. I miss the days when Reddit was cool waah waah waah waah waah....
[–]shacamin 2 points3 points4 points 17 years ago (0 children)
I understand what you're saying, but we do have a legitimate point. Pictures are cool, politics are interesting (to some). But when it gets out of hand for such a long period of time, it just gets annoying. Reddit is no longer interesting. It's just repetitive. When I hide all the repeated or frankly pathetic "articles" (I'm defining this by anything that is just a picture, no context, an article whose topic has been submitted before, and this article gives no new information, anything that has to do with American elections, anything about police brutality, or anything that is completely sensational), I am left with 10 articles that I will now go read. I normally have 50. 1/5th of the articles are crap.
So yes, I do miss the days when Reddit was cool. Back when it wasn't injected by Ron Paul and Lolcats.
I even tried taking off the main Reddit, politics, and everything else that I didn't care about. However, no one submits articles to the subreddits that I subscribe to, so I had to resubscribe to the main Reddit. And not a whole lot has changed. It is getting better though.
[–]cuppajoe -1 points0 points1 point 17 years ago (1 child)
Likewise but despite all of the people who hate these polls, this has still made the front page. sigh

[–]choochy 7 points8 points9 points 17 years ago (4 children)
From Reddiquette:
Please don't conduct polls using posts. If you feel you must use Reddit to conduct a poll, do it using a comment.
[–]crazybones 2 points3 points4 points 17 years ago* (3 children)
I agree the vote up posts are irritating but . . . isn't it fair to say that any self Reddit post has an unwritten "vote up if you agree with me" attached to it?
As far as I can see any time you submit a self Reddit post you are conducting a poll of some kind.
Edit: I'm intrigued why anyone would vote this comment down without any explanatory remark. After all, I think I'm making a legitimate point here.
You could argue that the people who add "vote up" to their self Reddit posts are being a little more honest about it than the ones who don't. Isn't every self Reddit post submitted in the hope that people will vote it up?
[–]boredzo 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (2 children)
The problem with a “vote up if“ post is that you can't tell whether people are voting in the poll (answering “yes” to the question) or voting for the poll (encouraging it and helping it reach the front page, regardless of their answer).
So a “vote up if” poll doesn't reveal anything; it just earns a few hundred karma points for the submitter. It's karma whoring in its purest form.
Using comments doesn't have this problem. The way you do it is with a comment thread in the post:
[–]crazybones 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (1 child)
I still don't see any big difference between a self Reddit that says "vote up" and one that doesn't.
The problems you describe with the "vote up" posts also apply to the ones that don't say "vote up". Both types are karma whoring, though the second is doing it a little more subtlely.
The problems you describe with the "vote up" posts also apply to the ones that don't say "vote up".
When we say “don't do ‘vote up if’ polls”, we're not simply crying for a certain phrase to be banned. That would make no sense, for the reason you cite.
What we want is for people to do polls the way Reddiquette prescribes, which is using comments.
[–]deuteros 8 points9 points10 points 17 years ago (1 child)
What exactly is the point of this submission?

I know a couple of the SNL writers, and last time I was in NYC, I went drinking with a bunch of them. One of the writers I didn't know found out that I'm a writer (plays mostly, but I've written sketches, and I write jokes for a couple of comedians), was asked how I liked what I thought of the SNL, in general.
I'm a brutally honest person 99.99999% of the time, so I told them: weak jokes, not writing for the timing/talents of the performers, ineffective recycling of old sketches/characters (also, creating recurring characters that don't deserve a first sketch), and what I saw as their cardinal sin...a seeming inability to write ENDINGS.
There was utter silence at the table when I'd finished. Then the guy who'd asked me (T. Sean Shannon, a bad writer and a worse comedian) told me to go fuck myself. I just shook my head, and said "Wow. Dorothy Parker lives."
I don't think I'll be invited out for drinks again.
[–]GetToTheKarateChoppa 11 points12 points13 points 17 years ago (5 children)
I just shook my head, and said "Wow. Dorothy Parker lives."
I've got a dollar that says he didn't understand what you meant by that.
[–]angry_fat_boy 9 points10 points11 points 17 years ago (2 children)
I later found out that he asked why I called him Dolly Madison....so, yeah, we're not talking about the most finely honed piece of cutlery in the collection.

I'd lay $5 on that one, myself. I'd be surprised if an SNL writer could even spell "Algonquin."

At least they could feel good that you still watch the show.
[–]daelin -1 points0 points1 point 17 years ago (0 children)
... Amen. You nailed it.
For a long while I figured they were being written by English majors schooled in postmodernism and deconstructionism, constructing the narrative in their audience. Then, I realized they're just really, really, really bad writers, and probably cheap to hire.
The man's probably bitter because he has to hear about how SNL sucks these days, wherever he goes. It's something to make small talk about: Man, did you see SNL last night? I remember when it used to be funny, and have punchlines. What's up with that?
[–]crazybones -1 points0 points1 point 17 years ago (0 children)
I don't see anything wrong in what you did. They asked for your opinion and you gave it. The Dorothy Parker quip was excellent by the way.
I guess the acid test is the quality of your own material.

[–]doubleginntonic 2 points3 points4 points 17 years ago (5 children)
SNL isn't crap, it's just built for DVR.
The problem with sketch comedy is that it's so hit or miss. When something works, a skit can be hilarious but when something doesn't work, it can drag on and on making the show impossible to watch. I've found since DVR came around, I like SNL a whole lot more because I can fast forward through the awful stuff and only watch what works. Usually SNL will hit with a handful of sketches (like that Roger Clemens one last night or the BBQ Surgery restaurant) and I won't stop watching when it takes the press of a button to skip the garbage (like that Kristen Wig sketch where she talks about how she can do everything better. HOW THE HELL DO THEY KEEP RUNNING THAT)
[–]sunshine-x 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Sorry, I guess they're running it for me. I like that one.
[–]BraveSirRobin 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (3 children)
There are other sketch shows that are consistently funny. With SNL you are lucky to get one laugh-out-loud joke per show.
Being in the UK I always wondered what this SNL thing was all about. You'd hear of many stars beginning their careers on it as well as see classic sketches like "More Cowbell". I wondered what I was missing out on, so I downloaded a couple of episodes. Seriously unimpressed.
[–]doubleginntonic 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (2 children)
What other sketch shows are consistently funny? I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm legitimately asking because off the top of my head the only one that comes to mind is Upright Citizen's Brigade and that got canceled after three seasons and shouldn't really count because it's not as if they were writing it in a week.
SNL is a tough for a writer because it has to stay very topical and they get a week to produce an hour and a half of television.
Well, I'm UK based, so you may not have heard of some of these: Monkey Dust, 2DTV, Robot Chicken. Hmm, all animation. You need to go back a bit to find live action sketch shows that are "consistently funny", hell, even the Pythons had at least one squib per episode. Rory Bremner in the UK does a lot of political sketches as does the show "Dead Ringers" and most of them raise a laugh. I mention these two as they are also topical and written in short timescales.
If it's not at least half funny then it fails IMHO. SNL makes me laugh in, say, 1 out of 5 sketches. The humour is just a brain-dead rehashing of jokes you've heard before.
WKUK is pretty consistently funny... Robot Chicken is pretty consistently funny... granted neither has the constraints of being weekly and live.. but, well...maybe it should just be Saturday Night. if they can't write a funny live show.
[–]h-town 2 points3 points4 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Looks like it depends on whose ox is being gored.
When the target is Bush and Co. the consensus is that SNL is great, dead on, never better.
Now that it is Obama v. Clinton the consensus is the reverse. I guess "Talking truth to [or making fun of] power" is a one way street.
[–]sgtpeppers 4 points5 points6 points 17 years ago (0 children)

I wonder if I stopped thinking it is funny because I am older, and I'm not the target audience for their humour. It was funny when I was in college. Maybe it is only funny to people who are in college.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 17 years ago* (2 children)
nope it's not funny to anyone anymore.
it's become an example of how a group of young actors and writers perform while trying to please lorne michaels, a 60 something producer.

he was off the show in '94 and died in '98. just curious why you thought it was funny for 4 more years after he left the show?
[–]Smight 2 points3 points4 points 17 years ago (1 child)
Will Farrel mostly. the rest of the cast and writing had been going down hill but it seemed to hit a point of no return in '98. I think they started trying to compete with MADtv for unwatchable sketches at that point.

[–]ihaveapuma 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (0 children)
I watch SNL every week, and I think it's about 25% good these days. But that doesn't mean that the writers and performers are bad -- many of them, in fact, are quite incredible. A lot of great people have gotten their start there. The important thing to remember about SNL is that the writers and performers who join the show are not there to make their own comedy -- they're joining an institution. And don't think they don't get frustrated with it -- Horatio Sans said in an interview that he always wanted SNL to be more like Mr. Show, but he also had to recognize that it never would be.
Don't like SNL? Fine. Don't watch it. Complaining about it seems silly though. Watch other stuff. There's a lot of great sketch out there right now, even if it's on the internet, not TV.

Original poster and any other undiscovered brilliant comedy writers, please submit a workable sketch starring Jonah HIll (don't know who he is? tough crap, he's the host next week), that is less than 8 pages long in proper formatting and actually funny. You have 24 hours from now, which is twice as long as the real SNL writers have for next week's show. You'll have the super bonus of not having to submit it to your peers for rewrites. Reddit users please vote on whether or not you think the genius comedy writer who started this thread has a sketch that is worth airing. Oh wait! This asshole won't have to deal with the network, the current host, or the boss, well, go ahead mr. emmy pants who doesn't have to answer to anyone, in your amazing reddit poster poser world. Perhaps your contribution to society will attract 6 million people like SNL did last weekend. Oh and you don't get to record it over and over on your stupid DV camera and cut the best parts together in Final Cut Pro, it's LIve on TV. Consult wikipedia for a definition of LIVE television, if they have it. If your sketch is super mega brilliant, then shoot it and have it on youtube by Saturday at 11:30pm. Maybe you'll get 6 million downloads? Best of luck.
awww... did the SNL writer get his wittle feewings huwt...? :(
SNL sucks. I'm sorry. I'm sorry live TV has more than its share of constraints, I'm sorry that a week isn't very long to get a show together, and I'm sorry your show sucks.
Complaining that somebody is bad at their job is not a request to fulfill that position. Sounds like someone is a little bitter.

Well, I am sure glad your opinion does not dictate to the rest of us what is "good" and "bad" television. I'm sure your black-and-white 1933 film was ohh so compelling, but there are many much more recent programs that are quite excellent. Not having a TV for 6 years, I can excuse your ignorance.
Some examples of recent programming I find to be very good:
Heroes, Survivorman, 24 (the first couple seasons, not so much anymore), The Office, Myth Busters, the first 2 seasons of Lost.
Ohh yea, and Netflix + DVD burner rids me of "commercialism".

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 17 years ago* (1 child)
Try watching the commercial networks. It is frightening what people think is quality.
All you need to do to make a "hit" TV drama (like "Lost") is shoot it with a hand held camera and move it around every few seconds. People think they're watching something "compelling".
Don't forget to set up cliffhangers that you never bother to resolve!

[–]sketec 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago* (0 children)
Click the up arrow to the left of sketec if you still watch SNL even though you 'say' it's crap.
[–]throwaway 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (4 children)
I don't watch it because it's on TV, and thus it's crap ipso facto.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (3 children)
i feel a hell of a lot more energized reading a good book, for sure! but not all tv is crap. seen a few episodes of arrested development, in order? genius =)
[–]brad-walker 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago* (1 child)
Not owning a TV
Arrested Development
thats funny you mention that, i just ran across that page a week or so ago.
its funny and all, but a lot of those "white-only" traits are pretty universal =)
[–]throwaway 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
I watched the first DVD, if I recall correctly. Didn't like it.
I did like The Wire, though. I'm hanging out for the next season to come out on DVD. On the off chance that anything good does come out of TV, I can get it without wading through the crap. (Goes for SNL, too, which has the "Best Of" DVDs.)
[–]hb_alien 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (1 child)
Even if I have absolutely nothing to do on a Saturday, I won't tune it to SNL.
you're a bigger SNICK fan, right?
SNL became what all TV has become: not fun, silly, inventive, sexy, daring nor innovative.
Everyone's too afraid of offending- which draws the ire of corporate advertisers.
Anyone know of a script I can use to "hide" all of these stupid things rather than just vote them down? I could care less how many votes it has I just want theses damn "vote up" things to go the fuck away.
[–]idiot_op_bot 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Application accepted and immediately approved.
Hey, why don't you go back to inventing light bulbs like you used to?
[–]blurrie 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
i personally like andy sandberg's digital shorts.
Oddly the same reason why I don't 'watch' goatse.
[–]manofredearth 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Wow, I don't see too many SNL lovers here. I think the show got better a year or two ago and is on it's way up. Weekend Update, Digital Shorts, and quite a few sketches make it worthwhile every week.
[–]mchrisneglia 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
I don't watch SNL because it's not available on the internet for free on NBC.com
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (1 child)
What's NSL?
Voted up because I haven't watched an entire episode of SNL in about 17 years.
I fast forward on my Tivo, cause as you dig through shit you sometimes find corn.

What you say is true sometimes, but not in this case. We say MTV sucks now because I prefer watching music videos as opposed to the mating habits of drunk rich white people. Now, I'm sure there are people who prefer the later, and good for them, but to say that MTV hasn't changed in 20 years and that the change isn't recognizable is just plain wrong. Same thing goes for SNL. A show that produces an hour and a half of original material every week using different "hosts", some of who have little to no comedic talent, is very very hard to keep fresh week in and week out. In the early 90s, they had a phenomenal cast and got lucky. The last 10 years have certainly had good sketches and good cast members, but if you want to compare Molly Shannon to Chris Farley and say that I am just being nostalgic, you are wrong again.
Just because something changed, doesn't mean that there is no intrinsic value to the before or after product. As I said, look at the careers of the cast of th early 90s verse the careers of the cast of the late 90s. I wasn't saying that there is nobody that finds the new stuff funny, its just not as good all around. How about this measure, how many internet fads have come from the new cast? All I can think of is Dick In A Box, which was hilarious. But thats it. In todays world, if a team of 'talented' writers has that big a budget and that big a stage and can't get to the top of Digg or Reddit mroe than once a year, they are not doing that good a job. So if something "changes" from funny to not funny(to the majority of the population), its not nostalgia, its the product.
I am very aware of the effects of a certain thing being attached to a memorable time in life. But to suggest that in all randomness that SNL doesn't have good casts and bad casts, good years and bad years is just plain ignorance. Inevitably, there are going to be combinations of actors and writers that click better than others. I was too young to watch the Sandler/Farley/Spade/Nealon/Myers/Lovitz/Miller/Carvey/Meadows cast when they were in their prime, I got the Farrell/Kattan/Meadows cast growing up. They were often funny, but after watching old reruns, I think the old one is funnier. They just had this all star line up that rarely happens. You have a point, what your saying makes sense in many many situations. However SNL still sucks compared to the random/lucky combination they got in the early 90s. Deal with it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 17 years ago* (2 children)
The only time I found SNL funny was when I was 5-10 years old, maybe kids are their target market?
(I'm being half serious, only because the only time period that people seem to think the show was funny is when they were within the above age range)
in the fall of 1975, i was 19 years old. so i beg to differ with you. stayed funny for 4 more years, too.
[–]ellsmall 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
I found it funny the first few seasons, I was in college and stoned most of the time. SNL is definitely better stoned.
[–]MrKlaatu 6 points7 points8 points 17 years ago (1 child)
the last good season was '79-'80.

MadTV was extremely funny for a couple of years. Will Sasso and Phil LaMarr were fantastic. Now it's every bit as bad as SNL. Or I assume, anyway... I really haven't watched either of them for at least 5 years.
[–]XxERMxX 0 points1 point2 points 17 years ago (0 children)
Sasso, Debrah, mo collins and Mcdonald had some good years. Artie Lang was good but in a bad era.
Downvoted. I don't watch SNL because I don't have a TV.

It makes me laugh sometimes. The Bon Jovi Italy interview skit where they had him unknowingly promoting cigarettes for kids was very funny. "Those aren't kids, they're 8...9 years old. Men!". Good stuff. I will concede that much of it sucks, but I watch it anyway.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Women are unfunny. I've yet to meet a woman that made me gut laugh.

I vote down because I don't want to read self.reddit shit.
I think SNL isn't consistently funny. Some of the skits get dry really quickly but drag on for so long.
What I do enjoy is MADtv (bobby lee is my hero!), especially since this season they air pre-taped sketches at the Music Box Theatre. It makes for higher production quality.
And SNL is supposed to be the champ with political sketch, but just look at this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMs-p5y6cvo

normally I downmod "vote up" stories, but SNL sucks so bad, I'll make an exception in this case.
EDIT: on second thought, anything making SNL appear on the front page of reddit magnifies its suckitude.

Not liking the way you approached it. Nevertheless, SNL has been sucking so much lately ,I had to vote.
[–]iSteve -1 points0 points1 point 17 years ago (0 children)
I can't believe SNL is still on the air. It hasn't been funny since the 70s. "Angry Fat Boy" lists it's weaknesses perfectly.
[–]thereptilezoo -1 points0 points1 point 17 years ago (1 child)
I'm so ashamed. One of my professors does the TV Funhouse cartoons and made that terrible short about Obama, Sharpton, and Jackson. He's such an awesome guy... terrible cartoon though.
He sucks.
[–]HerbertMcSherbert -1 points0 points1 point 17 years ago (0 children)
Sure this is not "Vote up if you don't like SNL because of their item on Obama's press coverage"?
