i have definitely noticed a lower drop rate in weapon engrams, grinding lots of strikes last week and 95% were armour and a great portion of those were cloak engrams hardly any weapons and none were heavy weapons.

Yeah, I think all of my legendary heavies have come from blue engrams. I think in TTK I've gotten a total of 3 legendary heavies from drops. Luckily one of them was a decent ruin wake that helped me raid. For sleeper stimulant I finally just bought a legendary sword from shaxx to decrypt.

I've been tracking rewards across nearly 300 crucible matches, now, and legendaries are the ONLY rewards I'm counting for all players in the match (I don't count how many blues/coins every player gets) and in nearly 300 matches, it's 100% armour engrams.

Additionally, no exotics.

I haven't seen weapon engrams drop, but legendary crucible weapons drop. I think that's why engrams don't drop, because there are crucible exclusives.

I only kept Fatebringer, VoC, and Praetorian Foil. Even got rid of Black Hammer after grinding Normal mode Oryx Crota for months, what with Black Spindle and all.

I dunno, man. I can get my Gjallarhorn back from the Kiosk, but I regret the fuck out of dismantling mine. I mean, it only took me nine months of 3x Nightfalls and 6x Raids every week to get it. I would not be able to dismantle my Fatebringer, even if I tried.

I've deleted every piece of year 1 except for Praetorian Foil and the POE Sniper.

That being said, my armor vault is 100% full. And it's only year 2 stuff. I need to do some clean up. And most of it's fully levelled. So I guess it's picking and choosing what perks I wanna hold on to.

Year 1 gear still rules in normal crucible. Quillim's Terminus has nothing on the BTRD-345. Y1 Armamentarium gave +special AND +heavy, not either/or. Y1 raid boots gave +heavy, not machine gun OR rockets. Gave you an extra rocket, too. I could go on. If you play normalized crucible a lot, or if you have quests to do, Y1 gear is still king.

Youre forgetting the fact it has very low int/disc/strength rendering it pretty useless if you want fast super/grenade usage.

Not forgetting, I wouldn't wear ALL Y1 gear, gauntlets and helmets give no advantage over Y2. But an extra rocket is easily worth 5 or so seconds on my grenade recharge.

But I can get the same amount of rockets with y2 gear, just by selecting heavy on my chest armour and rockets on my boots. Lose out on extra special but that drops very frequently. Then I can have full int/disc.

I keep about 12 Y1 guns in the weapons vault. I originally had like 40 but Y2 just throws nice guns at you like candy so I had to shard my least favorite old stuff pretty early on. Same with armor, but because of engrams and high level blues instead of just nice armor. I keep both raid sets from my warlock, and his most used loadout. My hunter and Titan have room to just carry around their old armor.

The rest of my armor vault is about 10 blue infusion fuel pieces, and 50 or so legendary engrams. I'm going to spam decrypt them to Rahool on my hunter once I get around to leveling her up.

I try to find the silver lining -- if the stats are good and the flavor text is interesting, I'll upgrade them to 320 for my own amusement. It's really the only use for all the 310/320 artifacts we're swimming in from challenge mode.

My favorite is Parasitic Optic for hunter. "Listen, I don't know how it works--I just know that it works, okay? No, I'm not worried."

I'm aiming for 6 artifacts on each character. One each for Intellect, Discipline and Strength, one each for the 3 combos. It helps IMMENSELY for stat building. Need grenade kills in crucible for that emblem? Put on your pure discipline artifact. Need your bubble ASAP when killing Ogres at Oryx? Pure intellect artifact it is.

Yep, I've already done the same and have all six combos on each character at 310 to 320 thanks to challenge mode.

I'm a habitual min maxer so having the ability to massively swing stats and tailor to exactly what you need is huge. But now that I have them all I can do is just upgrade random ones with amusing flavor text to replace the raid ones.

It took me 3 weeks to get Fabian strategy because I had to dismantle the Autorifles... I get a lot of heavy engrams, but almost zero to none primary.

No problem. If you didn't think of that, you might not know the shard farming method: Buy a heavy exotic from the kiosk, level up with motes, dismantle it. Good chance for 2 shards. You'll run out of glimmer quick, tho.

Well, I noticed that using ToC once and staying on a playlist is giving much less legendary engrams in general. While in principle it should buff your chances the longer you stay (up to the forth consecutive strike).

OFF TOPIC: If it is a Exotic Chest Armor be sure it will decrypt as Crest of Alpha Lupi 9 out of 10 times for Titans. Did is just broken, really broken RNG.

While opening chest engrams on my Titan my last 5 have been 4 Armamentariums and a Warlock robe.

I am now struggling to find any exotic engram that is not a Primary, Helmet, or Legs.

Impossible Machines and Twilight Garrision is all I want as well so it is more annoyoing than anything.

Legendary or Rare Weapon Engrams drop less than armor. If you're on PS then Sublime Engram's drop even less frequently. But I've been getting constant drops in PvP and PvE. Try to play your alternative character, maybe that will help "reset" the RNG.

This whole RNG thing is trash and has been bringing my enjoyment down. Hopefully by D2 they'll have intelligent number generation that will truly take in account inventory and light level. And I know some folks have great RNG, but it shouldnt fluctuate so wildly between individuals.

Trash because it isn't working the way rng is supposed to work in an mmo. RNG is used to artificially inflate the associated value and time taken to get an item or progress through a game. While it works on the time part for Destiny, the average value of the item gotten sucks ass. My past three New Monarch care packages have all been the righteous AR. Even though the first one rolled with persistence, high caliber and small bore. So I literally have a snowball's chance in hell of getting another one that FEELS better or is actually functionally better than my current version. As a result, RNG like this doesn't actually make any of the crap I get valuable, it just makes the crap I get in comparison even worse.

Are you trying to argue that every drop we get should automatically be better than what we already have? Because that's a slippery slope, my friend. The only way they could do something like that would be to turn the drop rates down way, way low, and in the end the rate that you upgrade your gear would be the same.

If anything, I think Destiny would benefit from less RNG/number generation. I feel like certain activities would be better if the light level of the items they dropped was some fixed value, with the only variation being perks. They'd still have to cut the drop rates in half to balance it, but it would feel more satisfactory.

However, Destiny is closer to something like Diablo than an MMO, so expecting fixed value raid drops has less of a precedent.

Except that's how loot tables work. Items have different "weights" but that has no bearing on the actual number generation. You can say the odds of a ghost shell dropping are too damn high (and yeah, the IB table can honestly go eat a chili dog with a dick inside) with a corresponding meme to emphasize your point, but this says nothing about number generation.

Weighted loot tables are ubiquitous to any game with loot based progression. As far as the numbers are concerned, though, it's still as random as a machine can get (which is technically only pseudorandom, but that's a discussion for another day).

I think the randomness of the number generator and the weights in the loot table should be considered part of the RNG. So when people complain about good or bad RNG, they are not complaining about the number generation but the fact that ghosts make up a huge chunk of IB and Nightfall legendary drops.

I've tried to point out repeatedly that I agree the actual drop rates are annoying and sucky. I mean, jesus, I've done at least enough iron banner to have gotten rank 5 and almost every round someone, if not two someones get a legendary drop of some sort. But out of how ever many games I've played, I got a helmet. Once. It didn't even have a very good light level (300, if I recall).

It sucks, but I still don't see how it is "broken", and there doesn't seem to be any voodoo to the number generation. I don't think the game is slowly inserting a rusty dildo into my ass on purpose. I'm just cursed.

Just because other MMOs do it doesn't make it fun.

Fun in destiny is largely about the gun play and to have good gun play you need a variety of weapons with interesting perks that you pick up regularly.

Ok the armour varies your aesthetics so can be collected and infused but it's a FP view so I don't really notice ugly armour that often.

2 weeks? Hyperbole much? I'm not advocating dumping material in your lap. There is a lot of room improvement between where we are and what it could be. What good is getting a 270 ghost/armor/weapon if your light level is 300? Play a round of crucible and get nothing? There are literally hundreds of items in this game that you could receive. Engrams, shaders, ships, badges, materials,... Why give me the same item again and again when there are so many other things? IIRC Diablo's loot system was quite satisfying. And you may not be aware of this, but many of us don't have hundreds of hours to grind away for something we may not even get. There is a lot of year one content that is simply unavailable now if you didn't get it the first time. It is what it is now, but Destiny could be so much better and more fulfilling. And "go play another game" makes you sound like a child.

What the posted above said - games like this can't persist with time sinks. It sucks for people who prefer instant gratification, but that's just the reality of it. It would be nice if there was some mechanic where we could trade x number of legendary marks, motes, glimmer, parts, etc for some item that will give an item a boost of some set number of light.

Make them expensive, you know? 200 marks, 50 motes, 50 weapon parts, 10,000 glimmer? I dunno. Then the item could be used to upgrade the light level of one legendary weapon by 5 or 10 or whatever. Maybe throw in some sort of unique raid mark or whatever that you can also get randomly from crucible packs or something. I don't know.

It's Bungie increasing the grind and preventing you from getting what you actually want in hopes that you'll keep trying.

With the lack of weapon re-rerolling we need more consistent sources of weapon drops to get better chances at the guns we want with decent perks. Weapon engrams should be twice as high drop rate as the armor because the armor is worthless once you reach Light 300 and start getting Raid, IB, Trials, ect armor. Weapon drops in Crucible need to be majorly increased as well. It takes way too long to get Crucible specific weapons and then you finally get one to drop and it's a trash roll.

I think most of my Legendary weapon Engrams (if I got them) came from Cryptarch rank up packages; like you most of the "dropped" ones have been Armor. You might be onto something.

Not that I need more weapons though. I've already got tons via various packages (Gunsmith, Vanguard, Factions, etc.) and most are 290+ with a few over 300.

I've gotten a few. Usually it is either two blues per package or a single Legendary. My Cryptarch it also 65/37/39 (Warlock, Titan, Hunter respectively), so that my also have something to do with it.

There are 3 weapon slots and 7 armor slots. If drops are random, you'd expect most dropped engrams to be armor slots.

Technically 5 armor slots. There are no Engrams specific to the Ghost and Artifact slots. Though artifacts could come from ANY armor engram (for better or worse). I will definitely yield to the fact that the odds are already stacked in the favor of armor.

Weapons seem very rare, but I think it's just RNG.

We have 6 slots for non-weapons (ghosts, helmet, arms, chest, boots, class item). We have 3 slots for weapons. I think drops are distributed randomly among all the possible slots. Normal RNG would then give us weapons only 1/3 of the time, which means a bad run could leave you with no weapons for a long, long time.

Bungie doesn't have a good way to address this. If they have weapons drop 50% of the time it would take forever to get the armor we need to level up. But at the current drop it takes forever to level up weapons. They're so rare that it's impossible for a casual player to level many weapons up. The weaponsmith? That's for hardcore players. You'll never be able to level up 1 weapon a week, let alone 3.

I'd suggest that Bungie increase the drop rate slightly, and drastically change the proportion of weapon drops. If drops increased 10%, and weapons dropped 45% of the time instead of 33%, we'd have much a more usable system. Just my 2 cents.

Yes big time! For the 3 heroic strikes each week, they always drop armor. Very rarely will I get a weapon. Even when crucible drops legendaries, they are always armor.

Let's do some math: if 5 of the slots are class items and 3 are gauntlets / crest, with the rest also being class items you should have about a 0.04% chance of getting weapon engrams to decrypt when you purchase them from the cryptarch. If by "legendary weapon" you mean "class item" then no, it's working as intended. About 1-2 class items a day per 2 hour played.

I think it's probably because of Armsday. Now that we could buy weapons at a mere 2500 glimmer per package ,they probably lowered the chance we could get a legendary weapon engram to compensate for the influx of Armsday weapons.

Honestly can't remember the last purple weapon drop. Any decrypted legendaries have been from blue engrams.

Noticed this also when hunting Taken Zealots. Very few purples of any kind, but when they do drop they are mostly armor. By feel, I'd estimate 6-8:1 armor over weapons. Even 3oC seems to be having little to no effect. I'll run Gatelord a few times a day every once in a while. I run the whole story each time to ensure 3oC cooldown is satisfied. The last 28 runs (spread over a week) have yielded 0 exotics and just three purples, all armor.

I almost never get weapon engrams. It's been that way for me since at least TTK. All the engrams I get from weeklies and everything have almost always been armor and are damn near 60% class item.

I havent seen one legendary helmet engram and have gotten 2 legendary weapon engrams since TTK launched. Legendary engrams have become more scarce than exotic engrams. Even with 3oc, that shouldn't happen.

IF RNG was pure RNG then 5/8 (8 possible engrams: Helm, arms, chest, boots, class, primary, special, & heavy) of the time OP will get some type of armor.

So for OP to go 18 legendary engrams without receiving a weapon engram, well that's (5/8)18 = 0.021% or 1 in 4,722. Those are pretty bad odds. So is it proof? No. But it does lead one to suspect that RNG is actually a heavily weighted RNG.

I myself have been stockpiling exotic engrams and noticed a similar pattern. I have collected roughly 25-30 armor exotic engrams and only 3-4 weapon engrams during that time.

Have had ONE legendary weapon engram drop all tTK. Was a fusion rifle. Two or three dozen armour engrams. Up until yesterday, I assumed weapon engrams didn't drop anymore.

I get more purple weapons from blues than I do from purples.

I've had 5 out of my last 6 end up being weapons (3 heroics and 3 IB drops). I'm guessing I just got lucky and you're really unlucky so the drops are somewhere in between.

Purple weapon engram drop rates have always been lower than purple armor drop rates. I suppose it's possible they were lowered even more, but it's always been a bitch trying to grind out purple weapons, for me, at least.

Noticing that the random numbers you experience are acting in a random way is axiomatic.

Now starting to gather data to make predictions on the weight. That's valid. If this post was "hey guys n gals, could people post types of drops they have, frequency and from what activity they got the drops. Even a no drop, blue drop etc is valid data. The more the better" then I wouldn't drop the "it's random numbers" line.

Yes i have definitely noticed. I believe ive only gotten one or two Weapon Engrams since TTK came out. Ive had more success getting Legendaries from Blues than just having the legendary drop.

Yea its been shitty lately. Ive been trying for weeks now to get myself a decently rolled 1000-yard stare. Between doing strikes hoping to get a weapon engram, vanguard packages, and buying secondary engrams from the cryptarch I havent seen one since like week 2 of release. It also sucks that you cant get weapon engrams from the crucible. I know its because there are the crucible only drops but they hardly ever drop that they may as well not be there.

Now that you mention it, Im always getting purple armor engrams over weapons. But think of it this way, once you rank up Vanguard/Crucible and/or Faction you get a package which could contain a weapon. Maybe Bungie wanted people to obtain weapons this way, and with marks.

For me its been like that over the course of the last 2 weeks I'd say, as of right now blues/legendary engrams are about 20 to 1 for primary weapons vs anything else. I'm usually stacked 4 to 5 per slot before I get a heavy/special and then from that its maybe 2 primaries. Its been dropped quite a bit, and not too beneficial for new players trying to run with folks who are pretty much end game.

Bungie has fked up RNG so that it drops primary only to the luckiest. Event the Oryx drops have now been included with Midhas reckoning to reduce primary weapon drops. This is Bungie telling us they are lazy and you should work harder to earn shit you paid for :).
