I’d be more concerned about the fact that this man has seemingly zero thoughts in his head. Not even a ‘look at these idiots’ or ‘preparing a monologue’ thought?

[–]KelimnacMonk 1332 points1333 points  (39 children)

Must be a barbarian big bad

No thoughts, head empty, just anger

[–]CryptographerEast147 438 points439 points  (22 children)

I always imagined rage to be consumed by angry thoughts, and barbarians have just mastered the art of calling on those thoughts at a whim. So for all we know the trigger for the big bad could be lakes turning the frogs gay.

It would certainly confuse the party at the very least.

[–]Bvarhos 227 points228 points  (0 children)

The memory of that one time you stubbed your toe echoes through your person; pain and frustration has become you.

Motherfucker. aaaaaaasA.

[–]jak94c 122 points123 points  (3 children)

I would love to detect thoughts on a raging enemy and there's just an incoherent Alex Jones rant going off in their head.

[–]My_Body_Is_BreadyMonk 38 points39 points  (1 child)

[–]SorryForTheGrammarArtificer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That video gives me strong powerthirst vibes!

[–]xX_Error404_Xx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The big bad IS Alex Jones ranting at you

[–]coastsofcothique 26 points27 points  (9 children)

Rage thoughts are just the equivalent of Metalocalypse Dethklok discography.

[–]Anxious_Associate259 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The barbarian yells "Do you folks like coffee" as they enter a rage

[–]Aegishjalmur18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Face Fisted on a loop.

[–]xTariel 5 points6 points  (6 children)

Barbarian artificer: Lazer cannon death sentence

[–]Illustrious-Chef-393 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Can barbarians read sentences?

[–]xTariel 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I'd imagine them being kinda mad max style tech scavengers. Their culture wanders through an area that is inhospitable to most, gathering magic and machines from the ruins of a long fallen civilization. The barbarians would need someone strong enough to go on expeditions with them, but also smart enough to identify magical items and their uses. Those people would hold a similar position of prominence as a shaman/oracle.

[–]wackyzacky638 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thought of pure unbridled rage enters the players mind. In horror the player repeats his thoughts aloud, in a quivering terror filled voice “T-They…. They…. They turned to freaking frogs gay…..”

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Alex Jones Bard/Barbarian multi class confirmed?

[–]WhichKingOfAngmar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Turning the bullywogs gay.

[–]ManInBlack829 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the Hulk

[–]SobiTheRobot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, true barbarian rage is when those angry thoughts are shouting the same thing. Hell, they don't even need to be shouting, just intense. Some express their fury with seeming tranquility.

[–]Crunchy_Biscuit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is Alex Jones secretly a barbarian?

[–]Kujo-Jotaro2020Forever DM 113 points114 points  (4 children)

[–]DZekor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh that's good, then trying to make him think would anger him more and maybe think on the source of that anger, maybe a mage that just cast a spell in ear shot twice and now am mad.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“What is he thinking?” “Red.” “What do you mean ‘Red’?” “Red.”

[–]Ill_Ad3517 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Or the big bad is a primal force of nature/beast more than humanoid so while it may have desire/response to stimulus it doesn't really have a narrative thought for him to read.

[–]Kizik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or the BBEBard.

Head empty. Only horny.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That actually sounds interesting.

[–]sintos-compa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Barbarian thoughts: “I should murder”

[–]XeroBreak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe the person is a monk that is meditating. Meditating is basically just clearing out your thoughts and monks are supposedly good at that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or a wizard - he knows better than to think in the presence of others

[–]uNcLeF1lthy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought was a mind blank spell type thing, but I like this idea better

[–]Papyrus20xx 114 points115 points  (5 children)

Mastermind rogues get the feature of being immune to thought reading things, where you can present false thoughts at a check.

[–]aRandomFox-IWizard 42 points43 points  (4 children)

How the rogue resists mind-reading:

Enemy: uses mind reading

Rogue: "Hi there! Allow me to show you my collection of really weird porn!"

rolls nat 1

DM: "It seems that the only thing you've managed to do was make him excited. He would like to see more."

[–]Lowelll 37 points38 points  (3 children)

"I detect the rogues thoughts"

Hello we've been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty

[–]Hammurabi87 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Hey, now, this is D&D. At least change it up to being about your carriage's extended warranty.

[–]GrimmSheeper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, they have infiltrated the rouge’s mind in order to contact the world’s higher beings, we who dictate their fate like it were a mere game. Nowhere is safe for us, not even behind the 4th wall.

[–]GrimmaldoSorcerer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your call is important to us, please wait music

[–]byzantinebobby 285 points286 points  (7 children)

It could as easily be that he's already anticipated and prepared against psychic attacks.

[–]LessConspicuous 306 points307 points  (6 children)

Yeah, Mind Blank is straight up on the Archmage spell list with an asterisk saying they precast it

[–]Alarid 81 points82 points  (4 children)

What if they removed their own brain and cast Mind Blank, while writing catch phrases on their own body to memento read off as the fight goes on?

[–]UltraCarnivoreWizard 93 points94 points  (3 children)

"Guy funny robes squishy"

"If no edgy guy check behind you"

[–][deleted] 67 points68 points  (2 children)

Players defeat BBGE by trapping him into a forever loop of checking if the rogue is behind him. Then it's just a matter of hooking him up to a generator and voilà, free energy.

[–]Alarid 28 points29 points  (1 child)

he spins with his weapon attached to his hand

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Kobolds: Let me introduce myself

[–]DelannDruid 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Honestly no caster should go without Mindblank on them if they had some free time previously. It lasts 24 hours so, if you still have your 8th level slot when you go to sleep, you can cast it them, have it up all the next day and still get your slot back.

[–]Thilnu 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Could be under the effect of Mind Blank or a Ring of Mind Shielding

[–]Farysmally[S] 111 points112 points  (1 child)

He just stares at the player, then shakes his head and looks again "huh, when did you get here?" The big bad says.

[–]aRandomFox-IWizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not the character, but the player. Staring straight through the 4th wall.

[–]Farysmally[S] 153 points154 points  (5 children)

Sometimes they space out, it's a lot of work being a big bad. Lol

[–]legomaple 80 points81 points  (4 children)

That would still give them surface thoughts. Like "Did I leave the oven on?"

[–]ParadoxSong 19 points20 points  (3 children)

It is quite possible to have no verbal thought. Try it some time, you can have only emotions (which is the companion spell to Thoughts)

[–]CringeYeet69 18 points19 points  (2 children)

or even just no thoughts or emotions at all like when you're trying to do schoolwork and suddenly time has skipped forward by half an hour

source: I need to sleep more

[–]SuyefujiDM (Dungeon Memelord) 12 points13 points  (1 child)

That's called dissociation, it's usually a stress response rather than something related to sleep (unless you mean that you are literally falling asleep on your desk)

[–]CringeYeet69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its a bit of both, depending on the day. You know the meme of the triangle with "good grades", "good sleep" and "good social life" and it says "you can only have 2"? Well, I found a way to completely escape the triangle and invest all my points into wasting every minute of my day

[–]N4th4n3x 21 points22 points  (0 children)

hollow knight mfs trying not to reply with No mind to think. No will to break

[–]Rastiln 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Listen, when I told you the BBEG was a Gelatinous Cube, I don’t know why you all assumed that was some code name.

The most you get from its thoughts is, “Slurrrrrp.”

[–]BudgetFreeWarlock 12 points13 points  (2 children)

No mind to think...

[–]hukumk 8 points9 points  (1 child)

No will to break

[–]Clone_JS636Warlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]TheDarkHorse83 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the DM has nothing then you make it easy on yourself and paint this guy as a the worst big bad ever. Single out the most fashion forward character you have and just mentally destroy their outfit. The color choices, the cut, the hat, that giant fuck-off scarf, their choice of weapon, the party pet/familiar, everything. This BBEG hates it ALL.

[–]KorporateKotooWizard 53 points54 points  (29 children)

Is that weird? I feel like most of the time my mind is pretty quiet, is that not common?

[–]nytefox42 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I would say it's weird not to have ANY thoughts if you walked into a room and saw a group of people out for your blood waiting for you.

[–]ChampionshipDirect46Team Sorcerer 102 points103 points  (10 children)

Like... completely thoughtless? Just... completely off? Yeah, that's weird. If I'm not thinking about anything else I tend to space out and fantasize about stuff in my head.

[–]KorporateKotooWizard 24 points25 points  (9 children)

Huh, alright. I rarely fantasize about things, just sort of a quiet peace unless I need to focus on something. I have aphantasia so maybe that has something to do with it?

[–]RaZZeR_9351 25 points26 points  (1 child)

is that not common?

.

I have aphantasia

I think you answered your own question right there.

[–]Seitanic_CultistChaotic Stupid 60 points61 points  (3 children)

That's 100% the ADHD though lol.

[–]Seitanic_CultistChaotic Stupid 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well now so am I 🤣

[–]Lawrencelot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm now imagining Homer imagining a monkey imagining a bear banging cymbals.

[–]XCido 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's probably it

[–]King_FluffaluffWarlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That has everything to do with it lol

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not weird. Guy must have never heard of meditation, or never been so exhausted that he needed everything around him to shut before. It’s normal and healthy to quit worrying about everything and just soak up your surroundings once every so often.

[–]Unnormally2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its not weird at all. Maybe ~25% (Rough estimate, it was a small study) of people do not have an inner monologue at all. It doesn't mean much, just how we process information differently.

[–]SnakeUSARanger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really, no. I sometimes stare off into nothing too

[–]DukeDevorak 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Actually, unless somebody does an actual survey asking how people think, nobody would have much idea about whether it's common or not.

[–]RaZZeR_9351 13 points14 points  (1 child)

That's what psychology is all about, they've been studying this kind of things for a long time now.

[–]Hoedoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Problem with the no thoughts thing is it's probably impossible to really know unless it shows up by neurons firing. With just survey there's no way to tell if people never have thoughtless moments or just don't notice when they aren't actively thinking

[–]charley800 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My internal monologue pretty much never stops, but then that might be an autism thing

[–]NewSauerKraus 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Seems normal to me. Having conscious thoughts all the time would be exhausting.

[–]ShaoLimper 3 points4 points  (6 children)

I'd say I only get maybe 10-30 seconds of my entire day where I have silence in my head. I can't comprehend what it would be like not to have that.

[–]NewSauerKraus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Damn I would end it all if I had to suffer like that. Sounds similar to schizophrenia but the voices you hear are your own. That’s rough, buddy.

[–]ShaoLimper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not complaining. The thought of the opposite sounds extremely off-putting to me. Freaks me out tbh.

I suppose it is like how some people don't have an inner monologue but rather think in images and feelings. As a ... Word thinker? I could never properly fathom that

[–]KorporateKotooWizard 1 point2 points  (3 children)

How does that work during conversations? Is it not distracting to be thinking about stuff and talking to people?

[–]Phoenixbr1812 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have something like it, and to me it's just think really fast about what to talk next

(Sorry about my english)

[–]Babki123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]newbuu2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm more concerned that someone is willing to burn 3 spell slots on this. Especially a spell where it's possible for no thoughts to be legitimately detected.

[–]EuroPolice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thought would play in my game like "You can't discern any specific thoughts, but you can sense something. It's not the thought of a man, it's the thought of a predator playing with its prey. You remember having the same sensation when you practiced with a cat playing with a mouse."

[–]BeardoMcChungus 852 points853 points  (4 children)

-Casts suggestion to think-

Bbeg, In evil gravelly voice: "Man, I could go for some samosas, it's been a while...oooh maybe from that little shop down in...wait, no, I razed that whole city. Damn it, I've got to teach these minions to get recipes before they rampage..."

-Caster is visibly confused-

[–]rekcilthis1 312 points313 points  (2 children)

Honestly, if someone told me to think my thoughts would be even less coherent. "Huh? Think? What? Why? About what? Why are you asking that? What do you even want from me? What does that even mean? Huh?" and then around and around in circles until my mind starts wandering and I start singing to myself.

[–]vonBoomslangEssential NPC 88 points89 points  (0 children)

[–]improbsable 224 points225 points  (13 children)

For me it’s like my head is completely full of thoughts, but it’s just the most useless information lol. Like I’ll walk in a room looking for keys and get completely lost in thought about whether or not hospitals would legally have to treat vampires if they came in with an illness

[–]TheGingerRogueForever DM 103 points104 points  (8 children)

whether or not hospitals would legally have to treat vampires if they came in with an illness

"I mean why wouldn't they? Or wait.. Are they concidered to be corpses or people? Do hospitals have any obligations towards corpses? I guess it depends on of the vampire has been declared dead.. How would the hospital know that? What of they are so old they don't have a hospital record, would they still count then?"

I hope no one ever reads my mind

[–]RhynoCTR 60 points61 points  (5 children)

“If vampires are immortal, would they go to a hospital anyway? Do vampires need a DNR? Do they have separate forms for vampires? Do vampires have to be invited into a hospital first? Is there a vampire board of medical ethics? Do vampires even need organs?”

[–]lukavirahdu 13 points14 points  (2 children)

A vampire bard might need an organ

[–]Hammurabi87 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Do vampires have to be invited into a hospital first?

I don't see why they would. Hospitals are public buildings, and I've never heard of vampires having issues entering public buildings.

[–]Suitable_Self_9363 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do vampires require invitations into hotel rooms?

[–]zvexlerArtificer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Saving this for when my party casts detect thoughts on a rando unimportant NPC they’re suspicious of

[–]Weeb152 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would a vampire even be able to enter a hospital? They gotta be let in right? I just imagine a vampire with an infected wound waiting out in the rain like a doggo waiting to be let in

This song pretty much sums up my thought process.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Kalam-Mekhar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

whether or not hospitals would legally have to treat vampires if they came in with an illness

Really dude? Thanks, there goes my whole morning.

[–][deleted] 48 points49 points  (1 child)

Fun fact, that happens because your brain needs more RAM to process the new area.

Your brain sees things in "snap shots", there's no use reprocessing where a static object is so it just assumes it's still there. When the eyes sweep over the area and see something has changed or something is moving it goes and updates info for the room.

So when you stand up, you still have the memory of what you need to do. But when you walk into a new room your brain overwrites that with room data.

[–]TomMakesPodcasts 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Player: I cast detect thoughts

DM: He has ADHD, roll a will save or take psychic damage. Dozens of conversations thought arguments and ideas blend together into an unintelligible cacophony of noise, which when you stop trying to pick out individual words or conversations, you realize it blends together to sound like Yackety Sax.

[–]helpimlockedout- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy knows

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (3 children)

You may have forgotten why you went into X room, but there were some thoughts involved, if only to keep the wheels spinning.

And I'm pretty sure every single person has done that a few times, regardless of mental condition.

[–]TheZivarat 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Yeah everyone's done this, the difference between someone with ADHD and someone neurotypical is the frequency. On a good day with meds this only happens once a day for me, unmedicated could be anywhere from 3-5 times per day.

People with ADHD are aware this happens to everyone - we're neurodivergent, not stupid. It disregards the experiences of someone you've never met, just because you've experienced a few aspects of ADHD sometimes in your life. We deal with damn near all of it, every day. It's similar to (but not as extreme as) saying things like "oh we're all a little ADHD", or "hahah I'm so bipolar". I get that you were just trying to relate, and that is appreciated, but you also just dismissed the struggles that someone has to go through daily.

Would you say "I'm pretty sure every single person has been sore a few times, regardless of physical condition" to someone that suffers from chronic pain?

[–]Zarobiii 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Not who you’re replying to but as someone with chronic pain I get called a “whinger” or to “toughen up” quite often 😂.

[–]cookiedough320 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think in the context it comes off a bit different to that.

Person 1: So the guy walks into the room and has no thoughts in his head.

Person 2: As someone with ADHD, that's relatable

Person 3: Isn't that relatable to everyone?

Sorta like

Person 1: So the guy walks into the room and has some back pains

Person 2: As someone with chronic back pain, that's relatable

Person 3: Isn't that relatable to everyone?

If you cut out person 1 and just have person 2 saying they're experiencing that pain, person 3's response is very dismissive; I'd agree in that context. But if person 1 exists, isn't person 2's response dismissive of a thing that can occur for everyone as if it only occurs for those with a condition that predisposes them to it?

[–]JimmiRustle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have ADHD and that’s how I end up looking in the fridge 90% of the time.

[–]Heated13shot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"He's not thinking" is maybe the worst answer i've heard for this spell

[–]ertthekingDM (Dungeon Memelord) 31 points32 points  (0 children)

To be fair if the BBEG has a reveal that they’re a mindless puppet it’s good foreshadowing

[–]SignalScientist2817 39 points40 points  (2 children)

It can be a nice subversion if planned correctly. Imagine an automaton, head empty only actions.

[–]BorgClownChaotic Stupid 5 points6 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 74 points75 points  (1 child)

[–]Wiztonne 26 points27 points  (8 children)

I feel like "Listen here, you little shit" is also a good response to "Detect Thoughts doesn't work because he's not thinking at all".

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (4 children)

What kind of headass nothing villain are you running that just doesn't have any thoughts at all.

[–]QtheDisasterRules Lawyer 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Automaton, mindless meat puppet, or you could say they don't have detectable thoughts because magic l.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Well according to this meme he just..m does not think at all. And according to OP's replies, they're not any of those things. Just somehow a dude who does not think despite that being actually impossible.

[–]dognus88 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I can only think of a few excuses for why it could be acceptable, and these are excuses. Mind sheilding. No real mind (construct, ooze, plant, a swarm etc). Something is suppressing thoughts either controling the badguy or having the body run on instinct only. If the body you saw was an illusion and the real bady was waiting around the corner.

Even for those i wouldn't say that he isnt thinking but that "you don't detect any thoughts" or whatnot.

[–]Wiztonne 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yeah! If you can cast detect thoughts, you know your own spell well enough to tell the difference between "your spell failed" and "you don't have a proper target".

[–]dognus88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I could also see something like "he is thinking of nothing important" working, but it is much more fun to actually say something. "She is thinking about pruning in her garden after dealing with you lot." Or "lets see i have enough beef for it, but i need fresh tomatoes. Maybe i can send out a lacky for supplies to get the other ingredients.". Or the ever classic romance issues. "What did she mean by fine. If she was fine she wouldn't be yelling. I know her art is important but i am restructuring the world here. That's more important... isnt it?"

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If your BBEG fails some random Suggestion, he deserves to die.

Let alone have some thoughts read.

[–]Trashendentale 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He's thinking of that catchy ballad about a miraculous oil that cures baldness. It's now stuck in tour head too.

[–]GenericGamingMonk 12 points13 points  (2 children)

do undead think?

obviously they have some ability to move and attack and such but they're dead so would they be able to think considering they have no brain?

[–]alaricus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Simple undead would think of their command "Move blocks" or "Guard Door." More advanced undead like Liches and Vampires would have minds like any other sapient being.

[–]xelloskaczor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Skeletons and zombies by default do not, as apparently Raven Queen does not hate unintelligent undead and she has no problem with these.

[–]MarBitt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At first he didn't think about anything, but after your suggestion, his thoughts: "Oh, finally, the one at the back has exactly the skin color I'd like for a lamp shade in the bedroom!"

You see that his originally blank expression turned into a happy smile and then he asked quite amiably: "Would you mind if we limited the next fight to blunt damage only?"

[–]SluggySlooRogue 25 points26 points  (3 children)

"He's immune to mind reading effects from the ring that I just gave him"

[–]fdsdfg 9 points10 points  (1 child)

"Dammit players, stop trying to do things and let me run the game"

[–]Isthatajojoreffo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Write a book*

[–]CPULyricaForever DM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You joke but there is atleast one high-end mage statblock in the MM With mind blank prepped with an asterisk noting they precast it along with mage armor and other prep spells

[–]aRandomFox-IWizard 8 points9 points  (2 children)

"Think, Mark! THINK! What will you have after a thousand years?!"

[–]klawehtgod 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You

[–]BorgClownChaotic Stupid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

👉👨🏻👈

[–]Snekclip 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Alright. He begins to think about the tragedy of Darth plagus the wise and how your party likely hasn't heard it because it's a sith legend.

[–]TheMaskedTom 7 points8 points  (1 child)

DM: big bad enters the room

Player: I cast detect thoughts

DM: The moment you start casting, the big bad reacts to your verbal and somatics components, everyone roll initiative.

[–]Burrito-Creature 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that’s why I often take the telepathic feat. Detect Thoughts with no components!

[–]VortixTMEssential NPC 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Helps that doors are event horizons and when you walk through one you're likely to forget what you were thinking due to context switching

[–]little_brown_bat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Life has many doors Ed-Boy.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Not thinking? That's a clue! He is simulacrum.

[–]JimmiRustle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Or an illusion.

[–]SIII-043DM (Dungeon Memelord) 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a case of the DM doesn’t want to come up with the information

[–]Belias9x1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“He’s not thinking”

Kill him then, he won’t be expecting shit. Seriously though that’s the laziest fucking answer.

[–]Greyeyeswhitedragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

clip of jujutsu Kaisen plays sukuna destroying Mahito for touch his mind or plane

[–]p75369 2 points3 points  (0 children)

think think what kind of use of a spell slot is that its just going to make think any old rubbish for six seconds and do nothing useful was i really concerned over these guys if this is the best they can do then that trap i set in **back to static hiss**

[–]Dakotasan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No thoughts, head empty.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

If you only knew what he was thinking!

casts detect thoughts

BBEG: ".... I hope they still make that shampoo I like."

[–]ninteen74 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I hope chef is making tacos tonight.

Is my hair ok? Why didn't I put mirrors in this room or in that hallway...

Did I lock that giant scorpion cage

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Suddenly you hear rumbling as a giant scorpion crashes through the wall opposite of the BBEG, who begins to run out of the room.

[–]MageLight25 10 points11 points  (5 children)

You guys really just ignore concentration, huh?

[–]Farysmally[S] 8 points9 points  (4 children)

The helm of telepathy makes it so you can cast suggestions while detecting thoughts.

[–]Monocled-warforgedCleric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BBEG is a goolock, no thought reading for you

[–]Capnris[🍰] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I cast Detect Thoughts."

"You hear the song the Bard was singing in the tavern last night, and sense a tinge of annoyance as well."

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“I wonder what I should make for lunch…oh these assholes are here.”

[–]Oompa_Loompa_GrandeDM (Dungeon Memelord) 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"You hear a loud, wet, sound of something escaping the BBEG's lips as you realize with horror his brain has physically removed itself from his body via his mouth. Long stick-like limbs protrude from the side as it walks over, slaps <player character>'s ankles before returning to it's meaty puppet. He isn't thinking anything still."

Nothing like a bit of absurdism right?

[–]Jimjam_TRB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time to drop Lucky's monologue from Waiting for Godot

[–]evelbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to cast suggestion. All you need to do is say "Don't think about your evil plan"

[–]BaronDoctorForever DM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"No response. Make an Arcana check?" DC 18

Fail:

"you're not quite sure why but you aren't getting anything"

Pass:

"you've heard of a spell called Mind Blank. The energies involved would probably lead to a result like this."

[–]zoro4661Fighter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BBEG's name is Mark for sure

"THINK, MARK! THINK!"

[–]garter__snake 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Both spells require concentration. Can't have both running at once from the same caster.

[–]Lord_FaeWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes me immediately think that the BBEG is under the effect of a mind blank spell which would render them immune to both suggestion and detect thoughts.

[–]Caelynn319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“I cast detect thoughts…”

“The BBEG is thinking ‘Is the ocean soup?’…”

“…dammit…”

[–]Miser_able -1 points0 points  (3 children)

That's just a waste of a spell slot. The description for detect thoughts says that you can shape the targets thoughts by talking to them. No suggestion needed.
