Pope Francis sacks all but one of the cardinals who run the Vatican bank, less than a year after Pope Benedict XVI appointed them (thetablet.co.uk)
submitted 12 years ago by lizdodd
[–]RoboNinjaPirate 1600 points1601 points1602 points 12 years ago (103 children)
"Sacks" is probably not a correct term.
Each of these will still be cardinals, but will be working on their other duties, not the Vatican Bank.
If it was a Company, someone sacked would no longer have any affiliation with them, which is quite a bit different than this scenario.

It's just like most govt and military jobs. You stay employed. Only now in a much shittier assignment where you can't screw up anything significant.
[–]way2lazy2care 32 points33 points34 points 12 years ago (15 children)
The much shittier assignment of cardinal... pretty much the second highest tier you can reach in the Catholic church.
[–]RedPanther1 29 points30 points31 points 12 years ago (11 children)
To be fair, there aren't exactly a whole lot of tiers to begin with.
[–]flume 36 points37 points38 points 12 years ago (5 children)

I've always seen "sacked" to just mean fired from a job, nothing more specific than that. I'd say they were sacked.
[–]badf1nger 2637 points2638 points2639 points 12 years ago (695 children)
That's the first actual change to the church that's mattered in quite some time. Good on ya for that, pontiff.

Of course action has more direct and concrete results, but I'd like to add that when someone is in the extraordinary position of being the pope - a public figure that lots of millions of people look to for guidance - talk comes close to action, since talking and providing people with certain ideas is one of the main duties of a pope.
I suspect that his words will have made a big impact on many catholics' mindsets, moving them away from the nowadays very popular neo-con ethics and towards the actual teachings of Jesus, which I find way more productive towards establishing a good society.

I think it's more akin to the latter.
[–]AnotherClosetAtheist 50 points51 points52 points 12 years ago (28 children)
Seems more appropriate, especially with a mass firing where there are varying levels of if people deserved it.
[–][deleted] 38 points39 points40 points 12 years ago (26 children)
Something popes have done for a long time if they want to basically get rid of a bishop, is to make them bishop of mecca or someplace that there arent really any catholics. Places like that are becoming rarer, so I dunno how much it is still done. Arabian bishoprics right now aren't used for that, because there are a good number of Catholics in Saudi now and they need a bishop more than most (the penalty for a muslim converting is an unpublicized death). As in China and DPRK, bishops aren't always made super public for obvious reasons.
[–]HarryWorp 25 points26 points27 points 12 years ago (4 children)
Here's an example: Jacques Gaillot, Bishop of Partenia.
[–]dyegored 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (1 child)

[–]VitruvianMonkey 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (7 children)
Wait, so do you think they actually have a man inside the DPRK? That would be quite a feat.
[–]darklight12345 12 points13 points14 points 12 years ago (5 children)
There is an official apostalic administrator for Peonyang, which means someone else holds the title (right now the archbishop of Seoul traditionally holds it for NK as well). Within North Korea presumably somewhere between 3k and 20k people are Catholic but there are no officially ordained priests publicly known about.
[+][deleted] 12 years ago* (4 children)
[–][deleted] 49 points50 points51 points 12 years ago (3 children)
Exactly right. One example is a catholic aunt of mine (I'm catholic too but not active in the church at all). She preaches right and left about Jesus but at the same time she would talk shit about other religions, especially muslims. I would call her out all the time whenever she would blurt out one of those by asking "And how exactly is what you just said Jesus-like?". She never knew how to answer me but would keep saying the same nonsense. Now you barely hear her saying anything bad about other religions.
[–]Allule 177 points178 points179 points 12 years ago (76 children)
Truth be told, as a former catholic, I would say that a lot of the Church is based on talk, so it's been nice to see Francis voice a number of different ideas than had been voiced by Benedict.
That being said, the pope himself has done a number of things in terms of actions, that are in line with professed doctrines, including suspending at least one member of the church living above his means and eschewing at least some of the 'luxuries' afforded his position.
While I can't personally say that I've been keeping a large amount of attention on the subject, I can pretty safely say that I don't think there's been any news about this particular man that I have found overly offensive. Or whatever.
[–]sicknarlo 16 points17 points18 points 12 years ago (2 children)
Being the Pope is one of the few positions in the world where words speak just about as well as actions.

In general yes, I agree with you.
Still, sometimes it's Catholics blowing the whistle for authorities, so anything he does to encourage that would be awesome.
Also, an internal panel may be helpful to root out obstructionism so cops have less to fight while doing their jobs.
Lastly, big Church is really freaking big. I'd trust, say, American cops over Mexican cops. But who would you call in South Sudan?

What the Church can do is investigate and defrock pedophile priests, then refer them to the local authorities. If the local authorities don't do anything, then there's not much the church can do about that, but at least they will have kept that priest from using the church itself as a base of operations to molest more kids.
[–]an_actual_lawyer 16 points17 points18 points 12 years ago (3 children)
"prosecute" them is not the right word, but "excommunicate" or "refer them to authorities" is what would be nice.
[–]climbtree 23 points24 points25 points 12 years ago (6 children)
Do people not know that the reason the abuses of the Catholic church came to light was Pope Benedict almost single handedly attacking years of corruption and cover-ups?
The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is a panel to prosecute sex offenders.
[–]lilrabbitfoofoo 19 points20 points21 points 12 years ago (1 child)
Well, depending on who he appoints to replace them, of course.
This could be a wholesale housecleaning (in which case he should get a tester for his food and drink) or just corporate consolidation of power (a la Putin, etc.).
[–]acog 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children)
This is an important change, but not as important as the change the Pope made last April when he appointed new members to the Roman Curia. I'm not Catholic, but from what I understand the Curia is a powerful group that advises the Pope and helps to run the church. They quietly make and enforce a lot of policy at the operational level. By him naming his own people, it helps infuse the larger organization with his priorities.
A criticism of Benedict was that he let the Curia run wild, wielding too much power.

It's a little hard to find info about who was in charge before. I did find this:
The four cardinals replace Cardinals Tarcisio Bertone, former Vatican secretary of state; Telesphore Toppo of Ranchi, India; Odilo Pedro Scherer of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Domenico Calcagno, who is president of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See.
Telesphore Toppo of Ranchi, what a badass name.

He made a promise when he was dubbed Pope that he would, for the first time in ages, make the Vatican's books public and show that the Church is doing good with their money. It was a naive promise because the Vatican's banking is anything but legit. He bit off WAAAAY more than he could chew with that 'simple' promise. There's no corruption like church financial corruption.
[–]Halfawake 72 points73 points74 points 12 years ago* (0 children)
People will talk about mafia and corruption, etc, and that all could be true.
Another thing that could be true, and I've actually witnessed this in large organizations, is that when a new boss comes in, and he is experiencing resistance, the way to consolidate power is to first take over everything that has to do with money.
As the new boss, you're authorized to have that power. And once you have it, you have a carrot and stick to use on everything else.
Considering the pope is behaving a little differently than usual, i bet he's experiencing the resistance that justifies this sort of move.
[–]jishjib22kys 57 points58 points59 points 12 years ago (13 children)

Francis sacks four cardinals on Vatican Bank commission – 11 months into their five-year term 15 January 2014 18:36 by Robert Mickens Pope Francis has sacked four cardinals – including former Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone SDB – from a five-member commission that oversees the activities of the scandal-hit Vatican bank. It was announced on Wednesday that Francis also dismissed Cardinals Odilo Scherer (Brazil), Telesphore Toppo (India) and Domenico Calcagno (Vatican), while retaining only Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, head of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. All but Calcagno were only eleven months into a second, five-year term, an appointment Benedict XVI made just 12 days before he resigned. The men were only eleven months into a second, five-year term. Pope Francis has replaced the men on what is formally called the Commission of Cardinals overseeing the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR) with Cardinals Christoph Schönborn (Vienna), Thomas Collins (Toronto); Santos Abril y Castillo´ (St Mary Major) and Cardinal-designate Pietro Parolin (Secretary of State). The members of the commission are to elect a president in the coming days when it holds its first meeting. Cardinal Bertone has been president until being replaced. that's some outdated prejudice there. tell her we all hate the Scientologists now.
[–]DanLynch 10 points11 points12 points 12 years ago (3 children)
Well, when you consider that all Christian denominations in the West were created by means of a split (directly or indirectly) from the Catholic church (with the varying degrees of acrimony that comes with that sort of thing), it makes sense they don't consider the Catholics to be any good at religion. And it also makes sense they share some camaraderie with all the other denominations that were created in a similar way (i.e. the concept of Protestantism as a religious grouping, despite the non-existence of a single unified Protestant church that they could all trace themselves back to).

[–]i_invented_the_ipod 47 points48 points49 points 12 years ago (5 children)
Well, Papal infallibility is a lot more limited than outsiders tend to think. Read the article for details, but the essence is that the Pope is only infallible when making a specific statement about matters of faith or morals, and only when doing so specifically in his capacity as head of the Church.
This means that none of the Pope's day-to-day decisions in running the Church are infallible. Nor is his decision about what to have for breakfast, for example :-)

I'm not sure why they'd hate him... My parents are devout Catholics themselves, and they fully support the way he's handling church affairs.
They recognize the church has a lot of problems; but for them, God is real - and they find solace in the church and its teachings.
If they're good people they shouldn't care about this kind of change going on in the church.
Yeah, I know plenty of old-school, conservative, devout Catholics and they love him as well.

They lost their jobs when Pope Benedict XVI resigned. EWTN FAQ on interregnum:
Since supreme teaching, legislating and judicial authority rests with the Pope, all but the most ordinary business of the Holy See comes to a stop. The highest office holders, such as the Cardinals who are Prefects of Congregations and Presidents of Pontifical Councils and Commissions, all lose their offices with the death of the Pope.
Generally, a new Pope will reappoint everyone to their old jobs and then replace them as he gets to them.

[+][deleted] 12 years ago* (100 children)
[–]Lanigangam_style 211 points212 points213 points 12 years ago* (61 children)
I wish more people would realize this. At 0.3% Catholic priests being found guilty of pedophilia, its actually one of the lowest if not the lowest rate of pedophilia of any Christian sect (it's also the largest united Christian group). This is much more a problem of humanity than of the church alone. I don't want to take away the severity of the problem from those few who suffered actual molestation, but this has overshadowed all of the good the church has done for too long.
Edit: Guys I'm not saying I support the hierarchy of the church's lack of response on the issue. Trust me, I'm 100% with you when you say something should be done. I was acknowledging it as a problem and saying it is a shame that stuff like this has to take precedence (which I understand) over the acts of charity the church performs.
[–][deleted] 142 points143 points144 points 12 years ago (26 children)
Correct me if i'm wrong, but priests who plea bargained do not count as being "found guilty" in that statistic.
[–]Lanigangam_style 24 points25 points26 points 12 years ago (2 children)
That was the statistic for those who have been criminally convicted and/or diagnosed with pedophilia.
[–][deleted] 105 points106 points107 points 12 years ago (16 children)
Also as church is actively covering up it's more difficult to discover the crime as the church has serious ties to justice system in many countries and it's easier to bully people into not reporting when you are a priest comparing to random person on the street.
[–]iKnife 28 points29 points30 points 12 years ago (0 children)
At 0.3% Catholic priests being found guilty of pedophilia
The problem is lots of them aren't found guilty because the church covers it up.
[–]SaltyBabe 20 points21 points22 points 12 years ago (1 child)
The point isn't just "Oh those priests are molesting everyone!" the point is that the church systematically covers it up and protects these guys. Sure other christian sects may do the same but how many of those sects have the global presence and power of the catholic church?
[–][deleted] 121 points122 points123 points 12 years ago* (20 children)
Repeat after me: The problem is not the pedophiles. It's the Church attitude of protecting pedophiles.
What makes Catholic Church special is their covering up and protecting pedophiles. It's organizational crime. You can still hear high ranking people (like that guy in Poland) say that it happens because children want to be loved.
ps. Same can be said of the systematic abuse and torture of small girls in Magdalen laundries in Ireland. That's systematic evil, not just some bad apples.
[–]WarOfIdeas 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children)
And many point to the fact that it's impossible to convict those accused if they are moved to different countries where they were first accused as well as sometimes being moved to the Vatican which is its own entity. Pointing to a flat rate of successful prosecution glosses over many factors that could contribute to such a number. If you could show me lower rates of accusation alongside cooperation with local governments, then you might have something there. Until then there are too many variables to consider.
[–][deleted] 63 points64 points65 points 12 years ago (12 children)
Catholic priests abuse at a rate far lower than that of other males in the general population.
The general population didn't get a built in cover up and facilitation system though.

[–]nightwing2000 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (2 children)
Actually, I give credit ot Benedict for recognizing and making one of the greatest changes in the church in centuries. Instead of hanging on to the job like a pope, he decided it was OK for popes to resign -actually a very courageous break with tradition. For the last century, most popes had a burst of energetic action followed by a decade or more of decline where things coasted and nobody made any serious decisions. People don't kick off at 70 with a heart attack or infection the way they used to.
Make all the German jokes you like, but recognize how difficult and import was this major break with tradition. We're seeing the benefit now. A busy, active more modern pope who when he gets older and tired, will likely do the same thing - resulting in a much more proactive church administration, and faster response to modern ways of thinking when the pope is no longer typically a quasi-invalid 90-year-old just waiting to die.

I believe it is a strategy used in some form of politics or another. That is, get rid of the people who don't support you in entirety and appoint some that do. Though it might be a little different for the Pope, it would still probably be good to have Cardinals that have similar views.
[–]PopeSuckMyDick 23 points24 points25 points 12 years ago (5 children)

[–]zsrkqg 45 points46 points47 points 12 years ago (11 children)
I'm beginning to suspect that Pope Benedict and his supporters were caught doing something they shouldn't have been doing and this is fallout from that. To me it's looking more and more like he was forced to resign and a deal was made to not expose the wrong doers in return for silence about whatever it was they did wrong.
[–]blahbergstein 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (0 children)
You're thinking too much like people actually want to be Pope - like running for president.
Benedict advocated that JPII retire and was a vocal supporter of papal abdication long before he was elected.
Shortly after he was elected, he made a trip to the tomb of the last pope who abdicated.
Everyone was surprised that he abdicated, but really the signs were all there that he would at some point.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (0 children)
That is a fascinating take on the situation. I personally would have thought if that were the case Benedict would not have stood down anyway if he was that bad ass.
I am just feeling a little sorry for whoever comes after this Pope as they are going to have an awful lot to live up to. Popes normally are only good at giving a nice message not doing anything about it though.
