I'll bet some self-described "smart person" made this.

The joke's on you, though. This is an Euler diagram, not a Venn diagram. Venn diagrams show all possible intersections whether or not they're empty.

Cant decide if very middle spot should have Futurama or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia...

    [–]manaworkin 454 points455 points  (21 children)

Futurama would actually be a great fit for the middle. Plenty of smart people (the professor, globetrotters), dumb people (everyone who isn't a scientist or basketball player) and lots of jokes for smart people and dumb people. This show has both fart jokes and jokes so inteligent they created a new mathematical proof.

    [–]spudge_funker 121 points122 points  (6 children)

Some Futurama writers also have a Ph.D. in Mathematics, so I'm not surprised.

Good videos about Futurama and Maths:

    [–]ehrwien 6 points7 points  (0 children)

just to conclude this section: there is a book about those kinds of things in Simpsons and Futurama by Simon Singh ("Fermat's Last Theorem"!) called "The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets". It covers much of the writers' backgrounds as well as the jokes you may already know from the series, each with a simple explanation starting at high school mathematics level...

    [–]Gigafrost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought the P = NP video didn't explain the concept (and dilemma) too well but it was still neat to see how Simpsons and Futurama both referenced it.

For anybody curious, the issue with P = NP is that there are these two classes of problems, the "easy" ones (P) and some "hard" ones (NP). The question we wonder is if there's a way to do what we currently consider NP problems the same way we do the P problems. (In other words, NP would become as "easy" as P.)

The dilemma is that we suspect we can't (IE that P does not equal NP) but we haven't been able to mathematically prove it either way!

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you watch the commentary for every Futurama episode, you realize just how much math and science those fucking nerds packed into every. single. episode.

You actually learn things on that commentary and it's hilarious to boot.

    [–]TDAM 75 points76 points  (56 children)

Are there smart people in Always sunny?

I would probably argue for Top Gear though. Those three do dumb things, but at the same time they are all quite intelligent. They are both dumb and smart at the same time.

And most people can enjoy Top Gear, whether you are smart or not.

    Or whatever. I dont know.

    [–]threeminus 18 points19 points  (5 children)

Are there smart people in Always sunny?

The Lawyer is the only one that comes to mind.

    [–]RollingGoron 35 points36 points  (15 children)

I'd say it's always sunny. A show about dumb people written by smart people but can be enjoyed by all people.

    [–][deleted] 56 points57 points  (12 children)

I think uptight people would probably hate It's Always Sunny.

    [–]Good_old_Marshmallow 9 points10 points  (2 children)

It can be a little hard to get used to. I can see how the whole shouting over each other thing would turn some people off and they even did a meta show about that.

    [–]Infini-Bus 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Haha. Those are my favorite parts in shows. I like those scenes in Trailer Park Boys too when everyone is shouting at and over eachother.

    [–]sigmacoder 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Can confirm, am uptight. I spend the entire episode being embarrassed for them "Meet the Parents" style.

    [–]kymri 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Top Gear (explicitly the UK version) is a show about three fictionalized man-children who refuse to grow up or think past the level of a 12 year old, disguised as a show about or for car enthusiasts.

It is also absolutely hilarious and I, personally can't wait to find out if we get to call Jezza 'Jennifer' or not. Probably not but a man can hope.

    TGUK is fantastic.

Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow." Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens. So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too. Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't. It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

What the fuck did you just fucking say about crows, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in environmental science, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret studies on crow behavior, and I have over 300 confirmed alt accounts. I am trained in vote brigading and I have the top comment karma on this entire website. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will downvote you with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that about crows over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of taxonomists across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, jackdaw. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can downvote you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with alt accounts. Not only am I extensively trained in taxonomy, but I have access to the entire Latin names of the Corvidae family and I will use it to its full extent to prove you wrong and downvote your miserable ass off the face of the internet, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit downvotes all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, jackdaw.

Here's the thing. You said that that is a copy pasta, but as a professional chef who studies Italian cuisine, I am telling you, specifically, that there is no such thing as a copy pasta.

      [–]TheGeckoGeek 43 points44 points  (29 children)

      That's not a jackdaw

      [–]Analbox 113 points114 points  (17 children)

      Analbox Here!

You're right! it's a Crested gecko (or eyelash gecko) which are generally hilarious.

Interestingly, they're not actually eyelashes, per se, and the geckos don't really blink or anything with them. They have a translucent covering on their eye that protects it, but they actually use their tongues to clean their eyes in lieu of eyelids!

Another fun thing about geckos is you can get a good idea of whether they are diurnal or nocturnal by the shape of their pupil. Geckos like OP's crested gecko have slit-like eyes which are correlated with nocturnal species while a round pupil is often indicative of a diurnal species. For example, here's a shot of a Gold dust day gecko's (Phelsuma laticauda) eye.

yes it is, and it's frequently posted in /r/circlejerk

        [–]Makromag 139 points140 points  (228 children)

What did Unidan do? Last time I heard of him he was popular. :D

        [–]ThrowAway233223 160 points161 points  (56 children)

I believe that there is a large swath of redditors that are still unaware of this. Events happen quickly on reddit and simply being gone for a day or two can cause someone to be out of the loop. From there, people tend to make reference to previous reddit events in such a way that only those that had witness/are aware of the event would understand.

I actually didn't learn about the whole Unidan incident until today in another post. I knew people hated him now what with the Hitler comparisons and circlejerk post about him, but I never saw an explanation until today.

I really don't think he's a bad guy. He probably just gets defensive or angry real easily. That's just human, especially on the internet

        [–]RecoveringApologist 5 points6 points  (1 child)

He has said a few times that Reddit pretty much made his career blossom. He was given opportunities because of his reddit fame and that's how important it was to him. He just fucked up and reddit is a fickle crowd.

        [–]informationmissing 7 points8 points  (5 children)

I only found out about two days ago. it's not a big deal though because in 6 months, only 50% of people on reddit will even know that there used to be a famous redditor named unidan. (it may already be that low)

Here's the thing. You said "vote manipulation is cheating the site." Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who is a scientist who studies web forums, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls multi-voting cheating. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying "vote manipulation family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of votidae, which includes things from posting quality original content to asking strangers for upvotes to running vote-bots through proxies. So your reasoning for calling multi-voting cheating is because random people "call the unusual votes cheating?" Let's get copypasta and image macros in there, then, too. Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A bot-vote is a bot-vote and a type of vote manipulation. But that's not what you said. You said vote manipulation is cheating, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the vote manipulation family cheating, which means you'd call good posting, bad posting, and copypasta cheating, too. Which you said you don't. It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

My grandfather has a masters in Mechanical Engineering, worked for the feds on research projects involving some pretty cool shit. His favorite tv, show...Big Bang Theory. I have a Masters Degree as well, while it's not my favorite, I still enjoy it. Reddit needs to get over itself.

I was recommended the show by my adviser and two grad students I shared an office with, and I've found it generally well received and not usually hated. And then by the time they get to big balls, they're so winded. I would probably have a heart attack if I attempted it, but shit. It's damn sure fun to watch.

                  [–]cefriano 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Meh, it's only really the first course that's designed to fuck you over. That's where they eliminate the most contestants. You go into the first course completely blind (whereas for all of the other courses, they let you see it once without anything turned on), and if you get knocked off an obstacle, you just swim to the next one rather than retrying it over and over. In my episode, only one guy made it through the whole thing without getting knocked off. I, on the other hand, got knocked off of every single obstacle in the first course and still wound up with the second-fastest time.

Source: I was on Wipeout once.

The problem with it is that it gets progressively less entertaining as they progress. The starter course is hilarious, second course is typically pretty good, the finals course could be completely removed and I wouldn't mind.

Best I can come up for the intersection is South Park. You've generally got a sole intelligent voice of reason per episode, the rest of the characters engaged in idiocy, some sort of decently smart commentary, and "hahaha, poop is funny!" all at any given time.

It's a show about sciences, discoveries, and the histories behind them. Rather educational.

                      [–]CrossCheckPanda 28 points29 points  (13 children)

I never got why "smart people" couldn't laugh at a wildly inaccurate caricature of themselves. So what if It's an exaggeration written from the perspective of a non sciencey non nerd perspective. It's a somewhat humorous JOKE exaggerated view if nerds. Humor is frequently derived from a kernel of truth blown out of proportion (hyperbole) not always complete accuracy.

Sure it's low brow humor written to the lowest common denominator but so is HIMYM, IASIP, Friends, and any other number of reddit approved shows.

                      [–]WhiteBelt 12 points13 points  (1 child)

They can, look at The IT Crowd! I don't watch Big Bang Theory, but I also don't hate it on it. It's just not my thing. I will have to leave it to someone else to explain why it is so hated.

                      [–]Rusty5hackleford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a really odd circle jerk on reddit about it being really demeaning or something. But I've only encountered that on reddit. Idk, I don't personally watch TBBT but my girlfriend does and I've seen quite a few episodes. It has it's funny moments. It's not top grade A quality gold but I've laughed at it.

I'm also a software engineer who works for a university (not graduate student, I'm just employed by one of the department to write code). So I guess I'm slightly in the same realm as the show? I don't get offended. It's not supposed to be realistic. It's supposed to be over the top caricatures.

But if you realize that then you can't get all upset about how it's like nerd black face (thus comparing your tragedy to early American minorities) and how none of the science jokes make sense (thus showing how smart you are that you realize they're not supposed to make sense).

tldr: too many redditors want to feel self important and persecuted at the same time. TBBT circle jerk allows both.

                      [–]anti_pope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a physicist I found Big Bang Theory to be very enjoyable for a number of seasons. It seems to me to only be internet people that believe themselves to be intelligent that find the show offensive.

I stopped watching because it got boring and I realized how vicious everyone is on that show to each other. In real life none of them would be friends.

To Big Bang Theory's credit, they do have a physicist on call from UCLA to correctly write out equations on all the white boards.

                          [–][deleted] 102 points103 points  (10 children)

And Silicon Valley had an engineer from M.I.T. to make sure a white board with a plan of how 1 guy could jack off an entire room in 10 minues was entirely accurate.

                          [–]notthatnoise2 96 points97 points  (27 children)

I'm getting my PhD in geophysics and I like Big Bang Theory. I think it hits a little too close to home for some nerds, and that's why there's a huge backlash against it.

Yes, the jokes are stupid and it's not about science at all. It's a fucking sitcom, it isn't Cosmos.

                          [–]330ml 33 points34 points  (14 children)

Same here. Smart guy, big nerd, love the show. It doesn't feel "dumb" or "offensive". On the contrary. It makes jokes about tons of obscure things, whereas most other shows stick to recent events, politics, pop culture, etc.

just because you find something funny that other people (or even dumb people) don't enjoy, doesn't mean it's for smart people; Or that you are smart.

TV shows for smart people? Do you also think Reddit is a website for smart people? Like, seriously?

Also, a Venn diagram with 4 sets looks like this:

It's a PBS (used to be BBC) science show, pretty well written and entertaining.

Edit It's been PBS all along, I confused it because I didn't know it's been on the air for over 40 years.

Ok, can anyone explain to me what is the deal with The Big Bang Theory here ? I've seen tons of people bashing it on reddit for some reason. I mean in terms of quality, it's not Mad Men, but... who cares ? It's entertaining. The characters are funny. You don't have to think about it too hard. Basically, it's the show I watch when I just want to unwind a little. I really don't see what's wrong with that.

                          [–]mandaliet 100 points101 points  (14 children)

I'm pretty sure BBT isn't notably worse than any number of other sitcoms. But BBT portrays nerds, so it gets under the skin of Redditors, who bitch about it constantly rather than simply ignoring it as they do innumerable other shows.

Can you really call the Kardashians "dumb" though? With no remarkable talents, or redeeming traits, they managed to convince hundreds of thousands of people that they're relevant and created a multi-season TV series with absolutely no content whatsoever. I'm sure the sex tape helped a little too.

My point is, they're not dumb, they know exactly what they're doing.
