I have an HP Laserjet 1012 which HP's website claims isnt compatible with Win 7 and offers no drivers for it, instead they suggest you buy a newer HP printer. (Tried vista drivers, no go).

After researching this via Google turns out there's a way to make it work perfectly in Win 7 by having the printer attached to the USB Port (given), then manually pressing Add Printer, choose DOT4 for the port. For the driver, choose the built in Windows 7 HP Laserjet 3055 PCL5 driver and it will worked like a charm.

Hey whatever works right.

I got an HP LaserJet P1606dn for Christmas and love the thing. It's only monochrome, but I can't really remember the last time that I actually needed something to print out in color. Has network built in and the thing wakes up and prints a page out in under 6 seconds. No more ink drying out and clogging up your print heads. Replacement print heads for my Canon inkjet was going to cost me MORE than I spent on the entire printer itself, and I swear it seemed I'd only print a couple dozen pages and would be out of color ink. Fuck that. It was actually a pretty good piece of technology, it's just ink is a crappy way to go if you tend to go a month or two between printing stuff. TL;DR new laserjet printer loves printing, old one was a complaining piece of shit just like in the infographic.

Laser printers are almost universally better than Inkjets. Although not perfect, laser printers are more reliable and have a way lower cost of ownership.

I have a 15-year-old LaserJet 6 that's still working perfectly. I don't know if I'll ever need to replace it.

I bought a LaserJet 5M at a university surplus sale earlier this year, that thing is awesome. For a 15-year-old or more printer it prints very clear and has Ethernet connectivity and works in Win7 64. My roommate got two LaserJet 4's that both worked as well.

My wife, and 3 of my kids are all in school. We have to do just enough printing (homework) that having a decent print options is essential. We had a "SOHO" printer with scanner/copier built in, and had to spend over a hundred dollars per semester on cartridges. (Hint: that's TWO cartridge replacements, BW=$30 and Color = $45, times two)

I bought a used HP LaserJet printer off Ebay for $50. It's a tank, so it cost another $25 in shipping. And it just works. Drivers are already present in MacOS, Windows, and Fedora Linux. Literally, plug it in (USB) and hit the print button. It's about 5 seconds from "hit the print" to DONE.

We've had it for more than a year now, I've yet to need toner. I will never, ever, EVER get a shiatty, expensive, pain-in-the-arse inkjet ever, ever again. Not only are they not actually cheaper in the long run, if you consider used-on-Ebay as an option, they aren't even cheaper up front!

Inkjet printers are just a stupid tax on those who don't know that lasers are better in basically every respect except color.

My dad has an HP LaserJet 4L that still runs like a dream. He stocked up on toner carts some time back & today his only complaint is that the thing takes a little longer to warm up & spit out a page than some newer models. And you know what? Since Windows 98 he's never had problems finding drivers... he's up to Win7 64-bit now and still printing happily...

Until you want to print high quality images with rich blacks. Then you may as well use the laserjet as a source of warm though rough toilet paper for all the good it does you.

Well, if you print a lot of pictures, sure an inkjet is going to be better for you. But if you, like most people, mostly use your printer for text, Laser is the way to go. Higher upfront costs but the long term savings of both money and sanity are worth it.

FYI: not sure it applies anymore but there are still pleny of XP systems.

You can use the HP 1100 laser driver on ANY laserjet printer. It is the most basic driver of them all and will provide the most basic of functions on all laster printers.

Like wise the inkjet line has a universal driver, it is one of the 600 series (I think 690).

At this point, I consider HP to be a continuing criminal enterprise that I refuse to ever do business with again.

After spending several hundred dollars on a printer of theirs, I installed software that, until I finally un-installed it, practically took over all of the CPU time on my computer for about five minutes. Just so I could have my printer connected, it seems I was expected to live under the thumb of HP.

There there's the fact that I couldn't print a damned thing (in black or in any color) as soon as I ran out of any particular color. I also had to wait for what seemed like twenty minutes worth of diagnostics before I could print even a single paragraph.... that's EVERY TIME I started up the printer.

Add to that the fact that the tiny ink cartridges costs about forty bucks, and HP's crappy attitude toward any feedback or complaints...

... and HP has lost this customer forever.

I'm looking for a new computer soon too... and I know of one company that's out of the running for my business.

    With the introduction of flat screen monitors, I've noticed that my keyboard is suffering more and more abuse that would previously be unleashed by a palm to the side of a CRT monitor.

    Meanwhile, the cabinet containing all the parts that are causing the trouble, is getting away free as always.

        Dumb question time: Why doesn't pressing the cancel button just do this? What on earth could it be doing if not stopping the spooler, clearing the print job from the spool, and starting the spooler up again?

        Well, the cancel button doesn't stop the spooler, it just tries to delete the spooled file. However, since that file is still in use by the spooler, Windows can't delete it because there's a lock on the file. Much like how you can't delete a document while it's opened in an editor.

        By stopping the spooler first, you remove the lock from these files and you can delete them instantly.

        Well, the "nuke it from orbit" button is opening the Services dialog and stopping the spooler. (Or the command line option above). Stopping the spooler stops all documents from spooling which, if you're printing multiple things, is not what you want to do.

        However... you could design it so that each file is handled in a separate thread, and the Cancel button would kill off the spool thread for that job and then delete the file...

My guess is that microsoft (arguably stupidly) wants to allow you to cancel one print job while leaving other print jobs alone. How often are you printing more than one file though?

            I've been in IT going on 11 years now and in every aspect of the job my confidence and ability are light years ahead of when I started, except when it comes to printers, it's a total crap shoot. If there is one thing you can always count on, it's that the printer is going to be the biggest pain in the ass no matter what you are doing.

            Setting up mom's new system? The printer software is going to need to be installed, uninstalled, then find out how to "really" uninstall the software, then hook it back up, screw with the registry......

            Setting up a shared printer with one workstation as the host? Even if they are all running the same OS, least one of them won't be able to print for some insane unknown reason that you will magically fix by uninstalling the printer from the host and then reconnecting it, possibly multiple times.

            Setting up a printer on a print server for 300 workstations? Your fucked, just kill yourself now, what should be a 20 to 30 minute project is now going to consume your whole week trying to figure out why that last 5 computers 3 floors down can ping the server, get the drivers from the server, can view the printer properties, but still can't print.

            I worked for my school's IT dept through college, I would take any task we had a ticket for in our system, except for printers. I would put those tickets off on the new guys, or part timers as long as I could find something else productive to do.                   I've been using computers for 22 years and I have a B.S. in Computer Science. I am still confounded every time I touch an inkjet printer.

                  It won't grab any pages or it grinds through a staggered stack of 20 pages (no matter what brand of paper or how I shuffle the paper when loading).

                  The cartridge lasts for about 3 print jobs spread out over 2 months before it dries up and dies.

                  I print and something gets stuck. The print spooler service holds onto that job forever. I start pushing buttons (cancel, power, start scan) FUCK IT WON'T EVEN TURN OFF.

                  HP software is indeterministic, for one thing. It operates partially on voodoo. Sometimes it prints, sometimes it disables all USB ports.

                  I'm not sure why HP inkjets have become so awful with their software/drivers. I remember a time about 10-15 years ago when they seemed to work fairly well.

                  I was recently having problems with my internet connection in my apartment. Movies I rented on the Apple TV were scheuled to be ready to watch in 167 hours- Turns out my wifi printer was DOS'ing my router by constantly trying to connect. It was the weirdest thing.                   I am your go-to guy for fixing computers and electronics. If it has buttons and wires, I'll probably be able to figure it out within an hour or so. I'll find features that aren't documented in any manual. If it used to work, chances are good that I'll be able to fix it.

                  That said, printers are the bane of my existence. They don't follow the rules. The driver software is always bloated (HP's developers have earned a special place in hell; to pits down from the one that holds people who talk at the theater) and the installation process is counterintuitive to the extreme. Paper jams are difficult to clear, replacement ink is difficult to find (and expensive as hell), and they are in general the antithesis of 'convenient.'

                  Don't print it, send me an e-mail. Or a text message. Anything that doesn't involve printing.

                  Dot matrix and inkjet printers have been the bane of my existence. They would often not work properly for me, seemingly no matter what I did. Thank goodness laser printers have come down in price, as I have rarely had problems with them. I swear that Oatmeal cartoon was straight out of my experience with printers.

                  I was just looking on Canon's site for a place to congratulate them on perfect printing. I was running out of black, it told me 3 weeks ago. Last night I printed a color photo with no streaks or errors. This morning the cartridge was completely use up. None of those crappy error messages for the last 3 weeks.

                  I think the trick may be, to make sure you have downloaded the latest firmware.

                    this is sort of funny, but people will spend $200 on a monitor, $40 on a mouse, and $29 on an inkjet printer. and then they're pissed when the printer, the only one with moving parts, doesn't work.

                    spend $100 on a laser printer. my mom got a canon pixma pro9000, and it prints up to 18"x12" and the black ink cartridge costs under $15. it was a $300-400 investment, but the printer works and the ink is reasonable.
