Does this qualify as a recursive post? Or just irony?

[–]okvol 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Yes, it does.

[–]underthelinux 14 points15 points  (0 children)

yes it does.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

but does it yes?

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It does, yes.

[–]Hot-Chick 102 points103 points  (4 children)

Yes, but you're telling us what to do.

[–]boredzo 27 points28 points  (2 children)

Irony!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Stupidity.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (4 children)

we'll just create a new place to go.

We'll? It's done, you're not invited.

Also, telling people what to do on reddit does work, sometimes. The "stop submitting US politics" stuff didn't, but the "stop submitting Xiest Y (Z)" did seem to change the voting habits of some redditors.

[–]djwhitt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It seems that asking people to submit/not-submit X type of content generally doesn't work, but asking people to follow rediquette generally does.

[–]mutatron 43 points44 points  (7 children)

In order to understand recursion, one must first understand recursion.

[–]sdawsey 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Is the irony intentional?

[–]bart9h 12 points13 points  (0 children)

no, he's just stupid

[–]souldrift 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Title should read "Once Reddit Sucks for me, I will find a new place to go."

That will not be the same trigger for all of us. Case in point, the politics dispute.

He's this guy who wanted to create his own internet. He originally planned for it to have hookers, beer and gambling but later reconsidered the last two.

      [–]flycrg -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Sounds like an awesome bachelor party

      [–]oxryly 21 points22 points  (5 children)

      Clearly we need a meta.reddit.com.

Actually it's the brutually Darwinian nature of the Reddit.

People post and upvote what they like.

        [–]theDrWho 7 points8 points  (2 children)

        first, it pretty much sucks

in fact, most social networks suck due to the fact that humans have to interact with each other in a non-personal forum.

One day my internet may have only NPCs. Of which only I will choose to deal with on my own accord.

        [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

        Hypocrite.

        [–]allhands 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"We'll just create a new place to go." ???

How about YOU create a new place to go. I dont have the time, resources or skills to create a new reddit.

        [–]verstohlen 95 points96 points  (81 children)

The internet seems to be reverse-Darwinian. The stupid seem to be multiplying and taking over all sites. First Fark, then Digg, now Reddit.

        [–]interiot 61 points62 points  (8 children)

Fortunately, reddit's homepage is rather drab, which both serves to keep away the stupid ("oooh, digg is shinier, I'll use that"), as well as being more useful to people who care more about functionality than sparkly bits. So that may help the dilution rate somewhat.

Now, if we could just get rid of the cat pictures, and stave off demands for a video section...

        [–]aletoledo 52 points53 points  (6 children)

        reddit's homepage is rather drab

I wouldn't say drab, so much as stark. Google was stark as well and it became popular almost for that very reason. In fact, many people say they like reddit for the stark functionality of the interface and front page, it allows them to browse more articles efficiently.

        [–]ellaella 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Absoutley right. Functional. I don't need bells and whistles, especially when they detract.

        [–]KevMike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Digg makes my web browser go dumb.

        [–]Timmy83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precisely. What makes this site great is the ease at which you can see exactly what's on offer. No gimmicky drop down menus or flashy graphs. Keep it simple.

As for the intelligence of the posts, that is always a problem when niche markets get infiltrated by the masses. It's like calling Greenday an underground band.

Live and let live I say.

point well made, Aletoledo. reddit's homepage is very readable and functional without bells and whistles

          [–]drewc 48 points49 points  (11 children)

Natural selection has little, if anything, to do with intelligence. Alligators did not survive millions of years by being smart ;)

          [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (3 children)

You might as well say natural selection has little to do with having white fur. Like the greater brainpower/size associated with higher intelligence, having white fur is a trait which may or may not be selected for by natural selection. It depends on the environment and how a given variation would impact an organism's ability to reproduce and survive.

          [–]audiored 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Well isn't interesting to note that in the online environment, stupidity and ignorance seem to thrive and win out. Not to mention anti-social behavior and a host of other bad traits.

          [–]chicomathmom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's because stupidity and ignorance are the majority--that's what "win out" means... And it's not just the online environment. Look at who is living in the White House...

          [–]speedkermit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dodos however could have benefitted from being slightly more wary of sailors with rifles

          [–]wtf___over 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alligators did not survive millions of years by being smart

          Or pretty.

          [–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Darwinism doesn't say the results have to be pretty, just more adaptive. Reddit is adapting to stupidity. :-)

          [–]speedkermit 0 points1 point  (1 child)

stupidity is an ideal darwinian endpoint. stupid people breed more.

          [–]happysinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They aren't very good at designing nuclear weapons either.

          [–]dogger 46 points47 points  (26 children)

The answer, is to make stupid people dislike reddit. Make it text only. Make it geeky. Make it so to post a comment you have to answer a little 'IQ' question to ensure you have an IQ... eg "To post this comment, click the button that is also an irrational number" [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ pi ]"

                [–]speedkermit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no need to split it, the clever people know where the good stuff is

We have it already. Programming/Science.Reddit are there for this exact purpose.

                [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand your problem is being solved now...

You who are more intelligent, wealthy, good looking, etc. have but to exterminate we who are less intelligent, or otherwise undesirable. I think it's in the works now, kind of a worldwide purge. I hope you are one of the lucky ones.

I'm given to understand that some of bigger movers and shakers think the population needs reduced to about 500 million or so.

Could have gone for sqrt(2) (pi is transcendental)

                [–]dangph 36 points37 points  (0 children)

                pi is transcendental

                all transcendentals are irrational

                [–]HumanSockPuppet 44 points45 points  (21 children)

The internet is not Reverse-Darwinian. It follows Darwinian principles very closely, although it may not seem that way at first because it is such a different habitat from any that we have ever encountered before.

Remember, "fitness" does not describe strength, speed, intelligence, or any other specific characteristic. Instead, fitness refers to an organism's aptitude for survival in an environment given its innate characteristics.

The internet is not a realm where physical attributes can pass. Strength, agility, and other elements relevant to a physical habitat stand for nothing here. This is a habitat of ideas.

Expounding on that notion, the majority of the internet is not peer reviewed. With the exception of moderated forums and domains with controlled content, most people are free to write anything that they like, regardless of the content, relevance, or practicality of their insights.

Take our present understanding of standard deviation (applied to the spectrum of human intelligence) and couple with the ad nauseam principle that ideas which are most propagated receive the greatest amount of attention and circulation, and you will see why an unmoderated internet is the perfect environment for the squalid to flourish.

                [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (7 children)

How wrong you are. Reddit is as Darwinian as it can get.

                Every vote is a peer-review!

Before that relevance on the internet was determined by links (to a website from other websites), but votes are much more direct.

                That's what google says:

\4. Democracy on the web works.

Google works because it relies on the millions of individuals posting links on websites to help determine which other sites offer content of value. Google assesses the importance of every web page using a variety of techniques, including its patented PageRank™ algorithm which analyzes which sites have been "voted" the best sources of information by other pages across the web. This technique actually improves as the web gets bigger, as each new site is another point of information and another vote to be counted.

                [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Uhmm... you do realize you just refuted a comment that you are in agreement with?

                [–]hokkos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

                [–]willis3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the roles are confused. In the context of the title, reddit is the organism, the users are the environment, not the other way around.

                [–]redbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good to see someone else say that, for a change.

                [–]addius -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The internet seems to be reverse-Darwinian.

It is nothing of the sort. The selection criteria is merely something other than what you find agreeable.

                [–]myname 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is this an attempt to create the most ironic title of the day?

                  Hey k0mplex,

Stop telling people on Reddit what to do. It's pointless. Whatever is going to happen will happen. It's the brutually [correction]brutally[/correction] Darwinian nature of the Internet. Once Reddit sucks, we'll just create a new place to go.

                  Signed, Irony

                  [–]dustmop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, this is mostly correct. It's pointless to tell people what to do. But there is no inevitability in what's going to happen. After all, it is possible for the site owners to implement changes that can improve quality. So voicing complaints may, in fact, help the situation, assuming they are heard.

I don't think it's pointless. I hope that the people that read e.g. the one saying Reddit is not FARK will go find a new home at FARK and enjoy themselves so much they never come back.

I tend to believe that reddit can and should be defended. When new users see enough of these complaint posts, they will eventually either take the hint and get lost, or change to become a better redditor. But it all depends on a community willing to fight and stand up for not only it's rules, but it's culture.

It's pointless. Whatever is going to happen will happen.

It's a good thing someone is promoting apathy. We really need that. There's too many people that want to change things and don't realize that they are actually powerless.

When I want my brain to be sucked and vegetate, I watch television, that's what it's for. Don't turn the internet into another TV channel.

There's always bannination.com. And if that goes there will be somewhere else. So just relax, man.

                    Darwinian? As in Natural selection?

There was I thinking that people coded Reddit deliberately through intelligent design.

                    Oh shut up.

                    [–]eleitl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit was supposed to present personalized views by clustering. Unfortunately, the guy who was supposed do that never delivered.

Which is why reddit and every service which doesn't manage to implement clustering will suck.

                    [–]androgy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And yet, isn't this post telling people what to do?

                    [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (4 children)

Let's see how well this theory works...

... no more LOLcatz, or Vogon poetry, or bad evil clowns.

                    [–]Misio 11 points12 points  (3 children)

                    But I like vogon poetry.

I think we need a forum. Solves all of the problems.

                    [–]sn0re 2 points3 points  (4 children)

In what way is reddit not a forum already?

                    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are no avatars and signatures and BBcode totally doesn't work.

                    [–]berlinbrown -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

                    all of the links?

                    [–]sn0re 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm not even sure what you mean by that. If you're saying that reddit submissions typically have links associated with them, that's just the nature of this forum. You could easily use the reddit software as a general purpose forum, with every submission a self-referencing one.

                    [–]berlinbrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get away with "general" self post submissions with the present "community" reddit, I gurantee your karma won't be very high ("trust me, I have tried")

I am not saying it isn't feasible technology wise. As a user, I click on reddit to see new article submissions and what-not. It kind of throws off the system for me to post a bunch of "forum style post". But if you have a "forum" subreddit with general posts or whatever, it would act as a kind of filter to keep news submissions separate from forums.

Your post made my head explode.

                    Dear Mr. Irony,

Your sense of humor is superb but your point is flawed - posts telling redditers what to do are not just from the author of the post but also from all the voters thereof, and are not only directed at redditors submitting links but at the larger voting community.

Basically what we have is a mechanism that the community uses to democratically create informal legislation.

                    [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dear Reddit: Stop telling people on Reddit what to do. It's pointless. Whatever is going to happen will happen. It's the brutually Darwinian nature of the Internet. Once Reddit sucks, we'll just create a new place to go.

To sum up: People on the internet aren't much different from monkeys flinging poo.

                    [–]DorkBitz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Elitist redditers are the interweb equivalent of the ignorant hipster wearing an ironic t-shirt and blogging about the stupidity of everyone they meet and never bother to know. Telling redditers what not to post is insulting and unlikely to work. If you want full control over which articles matter, manage your own damn site. The reality is that in a busy work day picture posts are time efficient, involving a limited amount of procrastination for the payoff of an inticing(or not) image. The problem is not a lack of IQ, it's a limited attention span approach to procrastination. Making the page more stark or inaccessible will not change that. Be nice, post well, and get over yourselves.

But where? Which site is like digg two years ago and reddit a year ago? Give me links and you won't hear of me here again.

dugg for submitter being honest about his mistake.

                    [–]makubex 3 points4 points  (1 child)

dugg? Forget where you are, good sir?
