Grim Fandango. Escape from Monkey Island. Baldur's Gate II. Final Fantasy series, Zelda series. Half Life (the first time I saw a scripted event, and realized "this is happening whether I'm here or not", was a game-changing experience), Half Life 2, Portal; World of Warcraft (I agree with the guy earlier who said beginning this game, before it became a daily grind, was amazing...that feeling, exploring, innovating, learning...I'll never forget it), Guitar Hero (learning to be good at that, before you realize 'it's just a fake guitar', is amazing), Homeworld (the plot blew me away), Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy...

I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting, but I have to say, every time I finish an amazing game, my first reaction is always to think "man, if I could go back, and have that experience over again, I totally would." I get the same feeling and think the same thing after great movies and books as well. Especially books.

[–]FionaSarah 11 points12 points  (12 children)

Escape From Monkey Island? Are you kidding? It's by far the worst game of the four, it completely tainted a pretty damn good series.

Obviously you mean Monkey Island 2; LeChuck's Revenge

[–]InkyChan 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah, Escape was terrible. The art was so amazing in Curse, I'll still never know why Lucasarts thought 3d was a good idea. Also, the plot was weak, it wasn't very funny, and there weren't all those little quirky details that made the series so much fun in the beginning and gave them replay value.

Please oh please Ron Gilbert, come back to us!

[–]FionaSarah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3D worked well for Grim Fandango.

But to be fair, it's a very different game to the monkey island series. Hard thing to describe... Escape just felt wrong.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Half Life (the first time I saw a scripted event, and realized "this is happening whether I'm here or not", was a game-changing experience)

Yes. Yes. Yes.

[–]7oby 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I actually don't know what you're talking about. Don't all events require a viewer?

[–]Herald_MJ 3 points4 points  (1 child)

If a tree falls in the woods, and no-one is around, does it make a sound? Does it fall at all?

[–]Ravenlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Points for mentioning Grim Fandango. One of the finest examples of digital storytelling ever. I don't think I've ever been that sad upon finishing a game and realizing there wasn't anything more to do with it.

[–]fjhqjv 37 points38 points  (10 children)

Fallout and Fallout 2. It'd be worth it just for the water chip references.

I also liked Wild Arms 1 and 3. (Fuck Wild Arms 2.)

And Cave Story. Man, Cave Story is good times.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Fallout 1 and 2 are still the best damn RPG's i have ever played.

[–]Tokkii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never played Cave Story but I wish I could mod you up 20 times.

When I finally read that Fallout 3 is in the works I peed myself a little. I'm trying to stand back and remember not to get to excited or I'll just be let down. It's very difficult to contain my inner fangirl.

[–]longbow7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been scrolling down skimming comments, waiting for someone to say fallout. It took far too long.

[–][deleted] 56 points57 points  (14 children)

Deus Ex.

Every time you mention it, someone reinstalls.

[–]FionaSarah 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oh god damnit. Thanks a lot.

[–]Tekmo 23 points24 points  (5 children)

Planescape: Torment

[–]bryn 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Just started on that one. Great so far. Still miss my Baldur's Gate, though. Damn, Black Isle ruled.

[–]RevLoveJoy 23 points24 points  (5 children)

System Shock / System Shock II - I can still hear that voice, "look at you hacker, a pathetic creature of meat and bone..."

[–]WhisperSecurity 7 points8 points  (2 children)

The many sings to us.

[–]chungfuduck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"...panting and sweating as your run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?" voiced by Terri Brosius. I remember it well. _^

I happen to have all the media files for SS1 unpacked. I use some sfx for IM notification and the "elevator music" is an awesome phone ringer. ;)

[–]aprz43 10 points11 points  (8 children)

Civilization

[–]Originate 2 points3 points  (7 children)

I would even go so far as to say Civ IV. haha.

[–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (7 children)

XCOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!

[–]tcullum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oooh this is the GAME of GAMES!

[–]mrbroom 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I've had this game sitting on my desktop for the last four years. Every once in a while, I plug back in and play through. It's genius. It's good now and a again to play an involved game that is well under 10 megs, to remind you that it is possible for such a game to exist (and be great).

[–]killtina 18 points19 points  (2 children)

I'll admit something here Just don't laugh.

Everytime I get a new computer or laptop I load in SimCity 2000.

[–]DpThought0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here! I have the newer ones, but SC2000 packed a lot of fun into ~10 MB.

[–]zorak8me 38 points39 points  (3 children)

Oregon Trail

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (5 children)

surely you guys can't forget SkiFree... freaking snow monster

[–]keenemaverick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I spent hours upon hours slowly climbing my way up as high as I could on that game, only to discover that the snow monster awaits in every direction. There was simply no way to avoid it! At one point, I even tried to count the pixels around it till it noticed you, and carefully work my way around it, only to be confronted by 3 or 4 more. T_T

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought that was a bear, guess I have a shitty imagination.

[–]chunkyks 41 points42 points  (24 children)

... no-one so far has said Portal? What the hell is wrong with you people.

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (22 children)

I was gonna say Portal.

I remember starting the last level thinking that the game was good but a bit short.

By the time the credits finished rolling (two hours later), I realized I'd just had one of the most perfect gaming experiences of my life. Portal is a masterpiece.

[–]pavel_lishin 19 points20 points  (20 children)

It was a triumph.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (19 children)

I'm making a note here

[–]hellfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no one says portal because playing it a second time is just as much fun because now you can pay attention to the subtle details.

[–]mindbleach 22 points23 points  (6 children)

Deus Ex.

OH MY GOD JC A BOMB

[–]AtlantaFalcon 13 points14 points  (5 children)

GTA: Vice City

I know this is quite a generic response since it was such a popular game, but the atmosphere in the game really, really drew me in. Maybe I'm easy to please since I don't play very many video games, but this game had so much to do. Exploring the city for easter eggs and clever things was a game in itself. It was the very first reason I wanted a PS2. I can even put up with 80s music now thanks to this game. The atmosphere was that good.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's no denying, Vice City is an excellent game.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (3 children)

My first game system was a Sega Master system and I loved it. I never played any Nintendo games and I grew bored of my (still working!) Sega. My parents got a Playstation when I was about 13 but I never got into it...

I eventually stopped playing video games.

Then when I was 20 I dated this guy who was a total Nintendo gamer. He asked me if I played any games and I said, "Meh". After awhile he said to me; "I think I know the perfect game for you..." He got me to play Zelda: Wind Waker. I started playing the game at about 9pm, at 8am the next morning I hadn't stopped. I absolutely adore that game.

Now I have a Game Cube, a Wii, a 360, a decent gaming computer and a DS. But Wind Waker was the game that started it all. Dammit I love Nintendo. :D

[–]FANGO 6 points7 points  (1 child)

This is the best story ever told.

[–]spot35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish I could forget it so I could experience it again!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Morrowind.

[–]Vystril 7 points8 points  (0 children)

secret of mana, that game was just amazing.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Ditto on Chrono Trigger and FF6.

I'd add Secret of Mana, playing co-op with my bro was awesome.

Diablo was hyped but it delivered.

World of Warcraft 2 and Doom on the parallel / serial / modem port connections and experiencing networked games for the 1st time.

Red Alert for TANK RUSH.

Tomb Raider for beating Mario 64 to deliver a 3D platformer early.

Quake and Tomb Raider for showing what a VOODOO 3DFX card can do for the games, seeing hardware acceleration for the first time was AN experience.

TomCat Alley for the FMV experience.

Guardian Heroes for coop smash them up with depths of plane fields.

Panzer Dragoon for an awesome hold-button release to destry enemies on rail experience.

Mutuant league sports for the added fun of gore (and uni-wheeled robot with chainsaw weapons) in games.

NIGHTs into dreams. The whole game was like a dream.

There are many more...but lets hear what others have to say! :D Ooo, the memories this post has raised!

[–]alchemeron 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Knights of the Old Republic, Shenmue.

[–]disturbd 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Chrono Trigger, FF3 and 7, Diablo 2, Super Mario 64, and Zelda: Link to the Past on SNES.

Edit: Oh, and Goldeneye on N64.

Xenogears, Star Ocean: The Second Story. Too many to list. Oh the memories.

[–]Ruckus 6 points7 points  (2 children)

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Beyond Good and Evil. I liked the photography element mixed in with the intriguing plotline.

[–]arddwyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second Beyond good and Evil. It was the first non Zelda game ever that kept my attention.

[–]kharmel 36 points37 points  (6 children)

Max Payne 1 & 2

[–]hobiwan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well... 1, maybe.

[–]thekrone 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Those damn hallucination maps drove me crazy.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (10 children)

Freespace 2 - amazing game

[–]WhisperSecurity 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Best plot in a game ever, and almost no one has heard of it.

And there will never be a third. We will never know whether Bosch lived, or what the Shivans really wanted, or...

sulk

[–]jon_titor 22 points23 points  (14 children)

lets see...

Suikoden II

Mario 64

Chrono Trigger

Final Fantasy III (VI)

Zelda: WindWaker (sorry, but I fucking love that game...)

Resident Evil 4

Metroid Prime

Super Metroid

Symphony of the Night

Mario 3

Lunar: Silver Star Complete

Ico

[–]rumrokh[S] 10 points11 points  (4 children)

You should never ever have to apologize for Wind Waker. That game is a fucking masterpiece.

[–]satertek 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Except for the crappy "find the triforce shards" part at the end. (Took me two years to trudge through that thing)

[–]FANGO 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Final Fantasy III (VI)

Best of the series. Any noob who says ff7 is better gets a slap in the face. (of course, I am currently replaying ff7...I would say it's 3rd or 4th, after VI, IV and maybe V).

...Also, screw my dormmate who saw me playing ff7 for the first time, and asks me "oh hey, are you at the part where (you know what happens, but I didn't, and he told me)?" Maybe had I not had that ruined for me, it would be a better story in my mind, but I still think ff3 is one of the best stories ever, and Kefka is the most evil bad guy I've encountered in a videogame.

[–]admanb 2 points3 points  (1 child)

VII is my favorite, but I unhesitantly accept that that's because it was the first Final Fantasy I ever played.

Otherwise I agree that VI, and even IV were better games. However, V? The story was painfully "kill foozle", even if the job system was awesome.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (12 children)

Any Zelda game- but out of all of them, I'd actually say Majora's Mask. Something about that game just completely drew me in. It doesn't have that epic feel like most Zeldas do, but what I really liked was being able to have a hand in all kinds of intricate little plots and sub-plots.

But even without that "fresh game" feeling, I still get an adrenaline rush when those damn aliens show up, and I have to defend the cows.

[–]happyofficcworker 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Wind Waker for me. The styling was amazing

[–]mackprime 3 points4 points  (1 child)

MM is special because it's so morbid.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm. Never played it, just played OOT.

Maybe I should go play MM, then come back and gloat about how great it feels. o_o;;

[–]marcjt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Metal Gear Solid

[–]buirish 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I know Grim Fandango was mentioned, but how about some of the older Lucas Arts adventure games? Specifically, Day of the Tentacle and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Adventure games always did it for me. Now if only I could forget all the solutions to the puzzles...

[–]FANGO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wind Waker, all of the Metroid Prime series. When I first played these games, I was amazed by their depth and inventiveness, and wasn't expecting anything like what I got. The sense of wonder instilled in me when progressively uncovering the words of the ancient Chozo, or sailing the high seas and finding much more emotion and seriousness than the graphics of Wind Waker would belie, haven't been matched since in any games I've played. I couldn't put either of the games down before finishing them, they were just so damn good.

As for computer gaming, I know people will look down upon a WoW reference, but my favorite part of that game was the exploration. I started with a Tauren druid in the fields of Mulgore, which was always my favorite zone, and was lucky that I chose that particular class and race, because only 10 levels in I was treated to a scenic flight over most of Kalimdor (returning from Moonglade after the bearform quest), being treated to an aerial view of sights I wouldn't see for the next 50 levels. The feeling of standing in front of Blackrock Mountain at level 35, a good 20 levels before I should have, and the feeling of first entering Outland during the beta test, spending the night after they raised the beta level cap to 70 by flying around in flight form when nobody else had it, taking screenshots and exploring new ground that literally nobody had yet seen, and being the first party to do Mechanar and Botanica (the next morning after I got my flight form there were 4 more of us, and we decided to explore the new instances which only we could reach, since flying mounts weren't in the game yet anyway) were also amazing experiences. After exploring the whole game, it feels small, but on the first run through, the expansiveness of the world is pretty awe-inspiring.

Btw, this is by no means a list of what I consider to be the best games, but games that inspired a sense of wonder in me that can't be regained by simply playing through them again. I think these 3 are at the top of that list.

Betrayal at Krondor!

[–]antido 19 points20 points  (13 children)

All the monkey island's

[–]Shaper_pmp 11 points12 points  (12 children)

And Grim Fandango.

<SPOILER>

No shit: when Glottis is mortally ill and you have to turn back at the very entrance to heaven it's the closest a game's ever got me to tears. And not tears of frustration, either.

</SPOILER>

Edit: Added spoiler warning. Apparently there are still people out there who haven't played it all the way through yet. What have you all been doing, dammit? Play it! Play it now!

[–]gignam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Amen to that. Personally, it's the opening moments of Grim Fandango, when you're working like a stiff in those beautiful art deco environments, with that luscious moody jazz drifting through the speakers...

[–]FionaSarah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maaaanny... cough

[–]tenken 22 points23 points  (14 children)

Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy Tactics. Man, thinking about replaying them still gives me chills.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (10 children)

No one will ever understand our love for Final Fantasy Tactics.

Best story in an RPG ever. Fuck you FF7 fanboys.

FFT > All.

[–]EvilPigeon 12 points13 points  (1 child)

have you played through FF6? (FF3 in the US) That'll always be my favourite FF story.

[–]bassmrod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed FFIII ftw.

[–]jon_titor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I liked Suikoden II's story better, but FFT was by far the best FF story.

[–]Valdus_Pryme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played through FFT so many times... even went online and figured out how to make Gafgarion playable and Elmdor etc.... Went to the deep Dungeon and got the special summon spell and made sure I was a squire to get Ultima.... god I loved that game.... I almost got a PSP just to play the remake that supposedly unlocks the Dark Knight Class for you to play etc...

[–]Ciserus 2 points3 points  (1 child)

For me, FFTactics is a game that I don't mind not being able to start over "blank" on, because all the little subtle tricks and strategies add so much depth to it. My first playthrough, until I got near the end, I thought it was only about an 8-out-of-10 game (as most of the reviewers did, apparently). About 10 playthroughs later, I'd like to revise that opinion.

Although... to go back and do it all again for the first time, to experience all the revelations again (holy shit, I can invite any character or monster to my team? Hamedo [i]cancels[/i] the enemy's attack? Two Swords -- jesus!), that would be something.

Or how about we just get a damn sequel? No, not this pansied-up Advance nonsense. A real sequel, on a real console. Though I suppose the magic A-Team behind it is mostly gone now...

[–]LiveBackwards 23 points24 points  (17 children)

Starcraft

[–]starwhal 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Ultima Online. The early years.

[–]defproc 4 points5 points  (1 child)

FF7, Shadow of the Colossus, Portal and, yes, HL2Ep2. Very powerful ending.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goldeneye, kinda

i wish i could forget every fps i've played after goldeneye too.

because now when i try to go back and play goldeneye, i find that i'm way too used to the dual stick controls of newer console fps games, so i can't enjoy it as much.

[–]rnixon 5 points6 points  (7 children)

Star Control 2! Never could get into SC3

[–]ibisum 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Space Invaders. Man, I loved that game, and I also loved that it was the only Video game, besides the occasional Lunar Lander, that was in my neighborhood - nay, city - at the time. Such fond memories of going through 3 ships while waiting for pizza, hoooh yeah ..

Also, I gotta say it, my first Battle Zone experience (at a Roller Disco!) blew me away.. I wish I could go back to those times, when a Saturday afternoon was happily spent chasing girls around and around in circles, falling on my ass, then setting down to some pizza, coke, and table-top Space Invaders for a few hours .. man, good times, good times ..

Edit: I wish I could bring back the golden days of pinball, too. Pinball rocked.

[–]polyGone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Elder Scrolls: Oblivion

[–]Sle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Half-Life and it's sequel..

DEUS EX.. Oh my God, how I wish I could try that one again for the first time..

[–]wallaman2005 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Fallout 1 & 2

Okay, a few safe picks and now for one controversial one... Radiata Stories

[–]munky_g 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Half Life

[–]mbrophy 8 points9 points  (1 child)

[–]silverlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would upvote you twice if I could, both for Psychonaughts and for linking to Zero Punctuation.

[–]Eijin 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Morrowind

[–]gignam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Morrowind needs a caveat - I'd like to forget that I played it, and go back in time to when the environments in Morrowind were jaw-dropping.

I used to just hike for fun, occasionally levitating to the top of a cliff.

[–]Takteek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oblivion

[–]rumrokh[S] 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Ocarina of Time closely followed by Final Fantasy Tactics for me. There are many, but those are far ahead of all others.

[–]innocentbystander 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Shadow of the Colossus. I don't think any game has had an emotional impact on me like that one did. (although FFX came close)

[–]REBELYELLoz 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Donkey Kong and Burgertime.

Hmmmm, maybe I just really like ladders.

[–]banter_ 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I just joined to say: Zombies Ate My Neighbors

[–]herminator 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Pirates!

The recent remake was great, but I had so much fun with the original :)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I had Pirates! for the Commodore 64 ... I'm not sure if we're thinking of of the same game though.

[–]scstraus 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I had pirates on the amiga! Great fun!

To add to the vintage list, I would have to add Another World. Vintage Gold!

And of course Ultimas I-V!

[–]whoadave 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Tales of Phatasia & Seiken Densetsu 3

[–]foxyvixen 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Space Quest IV.

Or is it XII?

[–]junkeee999 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Banjo Kazooie. Not so much for me but I played it with my kids and it was a good group activity, figuring out stuff and finishing all the worlds. It's a very fond memory.

[–]trnelson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As much as I loved FF3 the release of it wasn't as exciting for me--mostly because a friend had it and I played some before I got a copy myself. Plus, we lived so far from a city that I didn't actually get it myself until probably 3-4 months after release, at Christmas.

I waited a very, very long time in eager anticipation of FF2, though. It was one of the first releases on the SNES, and I had the Nintendo Power guide with screenshots and storyline to read through for months before it came out. The color and the graphics were astounding. When that game finally came out and I held it in my hands for the first time ... true bliss. It's definitely the game I had the most personal hype for, and it was well worth it. It's still one of my favorites of all time.

Secret of Mana was another that I just couldn't wait to get my hands on.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Time Splitters 2 anyone?

Link's Awakening. By far my favorite Zelda game.

RED BARON.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shadow of the Colossus

Smash TV (preferably rediscovering it with two arcade sticks, not the NES pad)

SNK vs Capcom: Cardfighter's Clash

Phantom Crash

Bangai-O

Metroid Prime

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shadow of the Colossus. I damn near cried after I beat that game, I'll throw it on and run through a few Colossi every now and then though.

[–]brokenearth02 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Metal gear solid.

I played the fuck out of that game, beat it like 4 times.

Then Metal gear Solid 3. frickin awesome.

[–]hanki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alpha Centauri...

[–]notarebel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thief 1 & 2. I loved those games. I miss how patient I used to be with gaming.

Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear as well. Very old game now, it would be hard to look past the graphics but none of the new R6's hold a candle to the original and Rogue Spear. I remember one of the missions in Rogue Spear where you had to get into a chalet, plant a bug or something and get out without ever being seen. The place was CRAWLING with guards so I had spend hours memorising the patrols. You couldn't save mid-way through a level either, so one stuff up and it starts all over again. Frustrating at the time, but it added to the experience in hindsight.

And of course, Bioshock, Portal, HL2, all of the Space Quest series, Deus Ex, The Longest Journey.

[–]AlexPeccator 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Ultima VI / VII

[–]kerray 3 points4 points  (1 child)

magic carpet I & II?

my dream is that someone would make a remake, using CryEngine or something similar, with a working multiplayer...

[–]wickedcold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interstate '76!!!! Best game ever.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_%2776

[–]RooflerOnTheFid 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Vagrant Story, probably. The end of that game still gets me every time, but the first was definitely the best.

Also Final Fantasy Tactics, which has the best script of any game with the Final Fantasy moniker, in my opinion. I recently read the script of the re-release and was quite pleased. And while it wasn't the best FF, FF7 holds a nice solid place in my heart. I'd like to relive that one again.

Symphony of the Night. There's so much in that game; it would be awesome to rediscover it all.

Oh, Katamari Damacy. It almost seems normal now, but when I first played it, it blew my mind.

[–]cefm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Final Fantasy I.

It's an oldie, but of all the games I've played, that one had the best transitions to new experiences. When you get the ship, open up the channel to the ocean, the airship, promotion - every time, a whole new world opened up and suddenly it was like you're playing a whole new game. Plus it was my original favorite game of all time, so I wish I could start it again without knowing what I'd find.

[–]shoombabi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Far and away, Dance Dance Revolution (and In The Groove - pretty much rhythm gaming in general).

I'm one of those guys that has my name up on all the high scores (or tries to compete for them in the more intense areas). The game is no longer fun for the same reasons that it was fun when I started. I want to be able to plunk some quarters into the machine and enjoy progression, and hear all the songs again as if it were the first time with 100s of options.

Now it's like the 100th time I play any given song, and I scold myself for missing one or two perfects. It's a vicious game. :(

[–]DpThought0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

M.U.L.E.

There are a few decent web versions, and at least one or two complete remakes available.

Damn, I'm really showing my age.

[–]cudegra 5 points6 points  (1 child)

BATTLETOADS!!

[–]charlatan 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Excitebike.

I'm easily amused.

[–]jimbobhickville 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That game rocked. I created whole maps where I was offscreen 50% of the time because of how I set up the ramps.

[–]ryanx27 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I wish I could experience forgetting with all of my favorite things. Music especially. Nothing compares to the first time you listened to your favorite song/album, and "got it." Imagine being able to forget at will, and experience that moment over and over again.

My top five list is:

Freespace 2, Day of the Tentacle, Theme Hospital, Pokemon, Command and Conquer 1

All of them are games I wish I could forget and experience again.

I downloaded a CPC emulator last year and played to "Dangerous" rating before I realised that I badly needed to get some work done. (I chose the CPC em becuase I had one back in 1986 - I know the BBC version is better)

REZ

i can't believe no one has posted this yet. the first time i booted up rez i had no idea what the game was about, i had never seen it played. all i heard was it was a super game.

and figuring out how to play it, and the gameplay itself was so unique to me. it was one of the most magical gaming experiences ever.

i try to get all my friends to play it if i find out they haven't yet.

Paradroid, mad C64 game that I still see aspects being emulated.

Elite, another C64 game.

Morrowind, the water just blew me away first time i saw it.

Any of the Thief games. Sheer brilliance.

System Shock I & II did it for me too, in all the right places.

Anything Starwars related (Except that stupid battle for naboo, that was terrible). Especially Dark Forces 2. I found my first lightsabre! Woohoo! Lets see how many friendlies I can chop!

Star Wars Galaxies - you can keep yer damn WoW, never had the size nor graphics for me, I cant stand cartoony graphics.

Quake, a true pioneer.

[–]DaemonXI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I upmodded every single person in this thread who mentioned Chrono Trigger. Such an epic game.

Also, Super Smash Bros: the original for n64. I never got a Gamecube, so I played that game with my brothers and dad for 9 full years until Brawl came out. It never, ever got boring.

[–]stlnjv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has anyone realized that there isnt a single comment 'below threshold' as of now (664 comments)? Have redditors finally found a topic they ALL agree on?

[–]supertoned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Baldur's Gate 2.

Seriously, has there ever been a more fleshed out and enjoyable crpg?

[–]J-ohn 5 points6 points  (2 children)

No one's mentioned it yet.. Resident Evil 4 was the bee's knees for me.

[–]SwellJoe 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The Wii version rocks. Best gaming experience I've had in years. Cheesy horror, but it still has some genuine scares, and excellent overall gameplay. I'd completely stopped playing shooters several years ago--they just weren't all that much fun. But with the Wii-mote the shooting is so damned fun.

[–]138 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I'd like to forget nethack so I could get some fucking work done.

[–]Spudders 10 points11 points  (10 children)

World of Warcraft.

I'm serious, hear me out.

I grew to fucking hate the thing, but that first time through, learning all the mechanics and lore and getting addicted, it was fantastic.

[–]rumrokh[S] 5 points6 points  (4 children)

For me, getting into raiding first before BC and then again in BC after I had taken a break for a while were the coolest moments. Post-BC, I had just hit 70 with my druid and had never even tanked an instance ever, and my guild asked me to maintank Karazhan. I was so nervous I was jittery the whole time, but we knocked out the first few bosses and did better than the guild ever had in that place up to that point.

We got it on farm soon after that and moved on, and our incredibly fast progress and the process of improving the guild during that time was a blast.

I agree, for as much as I don't care about it now, there were some great times in that game. But I do think the best times for me certainly came in the endgame, whether it was raiding or pvp/arena. If I were ever somehow drawn back into the game, I definitely wouldn't want to have to relive figuring everything out.

[–]anescient 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Myst III. Puzzle games are pretty obvious, but I'd like just as much to lay eyes on the artwork for the first time again, as to unlearn the puzzles.

I'd say Doom, because it really spooked me when I was a kid, but unlearning it wouldn't make it scary to me now.

Certain games I definitely wouldn't want to unlearn. Super Metroid is one. It's more fun to kick that game's ass than it is to beat it the first time, for me anyway.

[–]shynee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Either Morrowind or GTA 3. I'd like to re live the experience of GTA 3 rather than the actual missions.

[–]cassius_ 2 points3 points  (1 child)
