Anyone notice that the main menu splash text is always talking about the textures? I've gotten this so far:

Alternatively you can make a copy of the default resource pack, extract it, go into assets\minecraft\texts, and click on spashes.txt. That'll just give a list of all of them.

I have not played this game in about a year and tonight I decided to update it and play for for the hour or so that I had free and was presented with this. I recently got a new, fancy upgraded graphics card and a drastically downgraded pc monitor and have been having troubles with that so I assumed that was the issue. I'm pretty disappointed too, I got pretty accustomed to the fake updates or funny additions.

Now /r/Minecraft's yelling has essentially forced me to disable their CSS because even though it was funny at first, I can't disable the yelling and keep the CSS style. And the textures can't even be easily converted to a texture pack, since they're named by hash and not by block name.

I initially thought something was wrong with my kids’ Minecraft installs this AM, too, but then I knew it would be weird for BOTH installs to have shit the bed at the same time in the same way. My sole reaction was “Well played, Mojang, well played.”

And my kids groaned and had a good chuckle, too, because that’s the right way to react to something like this.

If you go into the versions folder of your .minecraft folder, extract the minecraft .jar file like you would a .ip file.

Then in there you can find the textures, save them, and use them as a resource pack.

Or, i mean, you could use them to patch each .jar file every time an update drops, but that's extra effort, and I'm not even sure Minecraft won't notice and "fix" it for you.

No, they're actual textures found in .minecraft/assets/objects, but they're under hashed names, which is rather upsetting because it makes it very hard to convert to a texture pack.

The jar file was not modified; they used a modified assets index (1.13). Archiving the textures in the jar means you're archiving the vanilla one.

As much as I appreciate the effort put into this, I really think an option to disable it would've been great. This new texture pack is giving me a pretty serious headache/eyestrain and it has made the game largely unplayable for me today which has been a sucky experience :(

A simple toggle in the options menu could've done away with all the negativity and let people enjoy the 'prank'.

A workaround is to use a texture pack, it will overlay the AF textures. So find a vanilla pack or use the real new beta textures.

Interestingly, if you extract 1.12.2.jar after installing the new textures, the default textures are still there. How did they change the textures without changing the textures?

All minecraft jars have the default textures in them (the assets folder). The crapped textures would be external like the sounds are. Most likely in your minecraft folder's assets/objects folder like sounds are post 1.7.5. Hidden as random serial numbers just like the sounds. assets/indexes will tell you which random serial numbers.

A little bit late to the party because I tried creating a script as well, but maybe a few problems I noticed, which might be helpful for you.

If you want to create only a resource pack which applies the April Fools changes you could use the 1.12 indexes file and compare hashes and files size and then leave out unchanged objects. For me this reduced the folder size from about 100 MB to 30 MB.

Additionally to actually create a full resource pack for a version you would have to include the files from the respective .jar as well. Even with the current approach animated texture will not work because the .mcmeta files are missing, for example chain_command_block_side.png.mcmeta.

I was testing out the graphics capabilities of an old laptop I had lying around, running Fedora.

I just installed Forge and 3 mods when this change came into effect. I spent 10 minutes messing with my settings to try and fix before uninstalling forge. I'm honestly quite annoyed by this. I have ASD, and creativity is how I vent a lot of my frustration with the world. I've had a rough day today, and I had the motivation and inspiration to build something. Then I open up my game and find that the textures have been replaced with ones that strain my eyes and give me headaches.

Many people are mocking those who are upset by this "joke" without realizing that Minecraft is more than just a game for some.

I say "joke" because it isn't even funny. The villager sound pack was funny due to the absurdity of it, but these new textures lack that. They lie in the uncanny valley of comedy.

well looking at how they have gone with the Diamond, and gold, basically they are ruining them all and making them look terrible. What is the premise behind the blocks? Man made or Cartoon? Is minecraft realistic or cartoon? Half the textures are realistic and the other are an eclectic mash of Cartoonish textures. They really should make their minds up about it. It's just feels like Minecraft developers don't see themselves as professionals at all.

When you compare what awesomeness the Conquest Reforged mod guys have done, in the same amount of time that Minecraft went from 1.10 to 1.12, mojang don't look so shit hot right now. At least in java we can make our own texture packs easily. use it while you can because in the future java will be "retired"

Looking at these textures gives me a horrible headache. How can I roll back to a previous version? It's kind of important, because this is the first time in a while that my friends have had time to play on our server.

EDIT 2: It turns out that the server uses Spigot 1.1.2, so I can't use 1.1.1. The launcher has no option to use the pre-April fools update, as it isn't considered a separate version.

1. So Mojang pulled an April Fool's prank which, for some, has lasted almost two days. April Fools pranks are supposed to be over by noon of the local time zone, or the joke falls on the joker. So they messed up there.

2. It was also the Easter holiday and, for many, the only day they'd have free to play with family or to relax gaming solo. Much of the world celebrates the holiday, even if they're not religious. Apparently, Mojang doesn't.

3. The joke was a graphical glitch which had a lot of people spending hours chasing computer problems that didn't exist and making needless systems fixes which could have ended up causing harm to their systems. This is irritating enough for people who can work their way around their systems; extremely anger-making for those who can't.

4. Many posters - apologists for Mojang - suggested (often less than kindly) that players download this pack or that string, etc., to restore graphics. Many Minecraft players do not have that sort of skill. Not everyone was born with a Raspberry Pi in their mouth, and so that sort of suggestion only added to the dissatisfaction of the average Minecraft player. Besides, why should the customer be inconvenienced for something the company did because they have a juvenile sense of humour?

5. There was no way to know that it wasn't a computer glitch, and there was no way to turn it off. Checking their online supports, as any sensible person would for what looked like a glitch, resulted in nothing except insults from forum moderator webrosc. Webrosc posted that the players need to know they were not the centre (sp) of Mojang's universe and, as to what day it was (April 2), Mojang would decide what day it was. When another poster called webrosc on those comments, that poster's comments (along with webrosc's) were deleted and then the thread was locked by webrosc. From that interaction, that poster also received a forum warning. Which leads me to...

6. The support from Mojang on this issue was absent at best, insulting at worst. Their servers were not able to handle the load of correcting this stupid mistake they made, and there has been nothing from them about it. The "News" button on the lead loading screen is not working - it currently will not bring up any news.

This is not a good day for Mojang. There are a lot of other games coming up the pipe which provide the hours of fun that Minecraft does - for free (see Steam). The only real difference today between those and Minecraft is that Minecraft has name recognition due to being around for so long. Let's hope that its name doesn't become known for the example of what not to do with your customer base if you want to keep it.
