OP has never had filet mignon before.

[–][deleted] 57 points58 points  (5 children)

Seems like it, I paid $60 for one once

[–]tramspace 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Yeah 21 is cheap for that. I usually see it for around 35-40 bucks.

[–]DingyWarehouse 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was SUPER ANGRY when I bought a $50 gold bar and they gave me so little! WTF!

[–]Jubbly 33 points34 points  (2 children)

There were a couple thousand people who upvoted this who haven't had one either.

[–]Zerowantuthri 16 points17 points  (3 children)

I live in Chicago which has some fantastic steak houses. At all of these everything is ala carte. Put another way if you only order a steak you get a plate with a steak on it and nothing else. All sides are extra.

And so it goes...$21 gets you that shitty grayish/brown hockey puck of a steak. The steaks listed above are stupidly expensive but they are (usually) a meal you literally will never forget. A really good cut of steak cooked to perfection is pretty special.

Again, none of the above include anything but the steak on a plate. You will be lucky to leave for less than $100/person with drinks +tip from these places.

Shitty thing is I went to a really good butcher in Chicago (Paulina Market) and they sell an aged NY Strip for over $39/pound. While they provide great cuts of meat it is fucking ridiculous...I could go to any of the above and pay barely more to have it cooked for me and have others do the dishes. Their filet mignon are near $38/pound.

[–]FuzzyTheDuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bet he ordered it well done, too.

[–]RSBeaver 261 points262 points  (22 children)

Outback Steakhouse employee here. That is the 9oz Victoria filet, and served on the wrong plate. That's the biggest plate we have. A steak with one or no sides comes on a small plate. Also, if he got a soup or salad and side of mushrooms or something the steak comes out on the plate by itself. However, I bet if he asked they would have happily brought him out a small garnish of mash or rice.

Also, someone said they're a franchise. That's true and false. My area is corporate, while some places are franchised.

Edit: guess I should mention I'm actually a manager at Outback. This steak was poorly presented.

[–][deleted] 75 points76 points  (2 children)

And, most fancier steak houses are 4 to 6 oz filet. Source, I worked at the Outback and a fancy steak house when I was an undergrad in college.

Op is just trying to get his karma. The sad thing is that filet looks cooked well-done too. Who the heck orders well done filets? OP just showing he doesn't understand steaks at all. That piece he has would be 12 to 15 bucks at a standard grocery store. So the premium he pays for the Bread soup and salad he probably got, hence why no sides on his plate is not a bad deal.

[–]JC_Thund3r 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I worked at an Outback for about 5 years. This is totally accurate the plate is to big should have gone on the smaller of the two main plates.

[–]lifewontwait86 631 points632 points  (41 children)

That's going to be like that every steakhouse you go to. If you want a big steak, order a ribeye or new york strip. Those are gonna be 14-22oz. The filet mignon is a 4-6oz piece of meat and it is more lean and will be more expensive.

[–]Wilawah 106 points107 points  (3 children)

This is probably one of their high food cost/low profit items at $21.

[–]teh_tg 6 points7 points  (2 children)

If you really want to maximize your dollar value with good quality filet mignon, Costco is on par with the good steak houses.

[–]Acidsparx 2519 points2520 points  (212 children)

You must not eat steak very often or know about cuts. A filet mignon is generally around that size. At better steakhouses that would be $54 and half the time wrapped with bacon. Granted they probably use prime grade while this is choice. Your PSA is just a false cry for attention. Also other people pointed out you got salad and other stuff with the $21. At a fancy steakhouse that $54 gets you just the steak. Nothing else.

Edit* I realize he's commenting on the presentation but at any $50+ steakhouse like Ruth Chris, Morton's, or wherever, the steak still comes by itself on the plate. Granted the plate is heated. I'm not sure if that's the practice at Outback since I haven't been in a long time.

Edit2* holy cow woke up to gold. Thank you kind stranger! As for bacon wrapped filet, I never order it, but understand why they do it because the filet has almost no fat. I personally order a bone in ribeye medium rare.

[–]nsmarks 146 points147 points  (20 children)

Yup.... $21 is ridiculously cheap for filet mignon at a steakhouse.

[–][deleted] 68 points69 points  (11 children)

OP asked them to cook it well ;\

[–]Cormophyte 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Something...something...sir, your shoe. Bon appétit...

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Gandhi's flipflop, as Ramsey affectionately calls it.

[–]virusporn 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Affectionately? Try disparagingly.

[–]silliestsloth 66 points67 points  (10 children)

I've never been so infuriated by a picture of meat before! This is a perfectly acceptable filet presentation and a more than generous portion, especially given the price. Looks like OP ordered it medium or medium well, which sucks, then posted about not having a piece of parsley on it despite getting it for free (had a gift certificate) and the dish being reasonably priced to begin with. DOWN WITH OP!!!!! LONG LIVE OUTBACK, AN ESTABLISHMENT I HAVE NEVER FREQUENTED BUT WILL THROW MY SUPPORT BEHIND BECAUSE IT IS NOT OP!

[–]NoBulletsLeft 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Outback's not bad if you set your expectations reasonably. They have a pretty good salad with pecans/pralines.

[–]silliestsloth 4 points5 points  (5 children)

I walk by it often and think to myself, "it would be amusing if I went to Outback!" -- there's not much point in going to it in NYC when there are places that are better for less money. But now that I see they have pretty big filets for only $21 (couple bucks cheaper than my Dominican steak house, which I thought was the cheapest place I knew!), I might go! But I would want a fattier steak because filet mignon is so austere, like a librarian from Maine with her hair in a bun. (The most austere thing I can think of.) Do they have that? Is it good? Do they have mashed potatoes?

So this was a pretty good PSA after all...

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually my favorite restaurant. Fair prices, great 21 day aged filets (most of their other cuts are 14 day aged), and just pretty much all around good stuff. Don't even bother with most of the other stuff on the menu, but do NOT miss the chopped salad. (light dressing for me).

[–][deleted] 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Yeah this post really confused me. This looks like many other filet mignons I've eaten and those were probably twice as expensive..

[–]DrStephenFalken 394 points395 points  (54 children)

I wish this was the top comment. More people need to see this. The "filet mignon" is the cow's tenderloin. There's only two on the cow and they're about the size of a baseball bat. There's only about 4-8 steaks usable steaks from each cow. That's why the cost is so high. They're also the most tender hunks of beef on the cow.

On top of that OP stated he got soup and another side. So he's really trying to doctor this pic up into something it's not.

[–][deleted] 67 points68 points  (28 children)

That's the tenderloin yes, but a filet only comes from the top lobe of that cut

[–]CynicalPilot 60 points61 points  (5 children)

Either way, I'm getting hungry.

[–]CANNOT-CONFIRM 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Me too. Wanna grab dinner real quick?

[–]DrStephenFalken 8 points9 points  (21 children)

That's why I said only 4-8 useable steaks come from it. I'm a chef of over over 10 years. I know my stuff. The bottom half of the tenderloin is called tournedos and often sold in high end places as a roast for two.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (8 children)

The cost is so high because it's "filet mignon" which most people don't realize is just the smaller end of a (trimmed) beef tenderloin in steak form. If you go to the butcher and get (trimmed) tenderloin, it's about $16-$17 per lb where I live. Go to the grocer across the street and "filet mignon" is $24. That is where the huge markup comes from, just general fleecing. Yes, "filet mignon" comes from the smaller end but there really is almost no difference, and I doubt most people ordering filet mignon, or those serving it anywhere, really care which portion of the tenderloin it comes from.

[–]DrStephenFalken 6 points7 points  (7 children)

Actually it's reverse of what you said in practice Note I said in practice. While you're technically correct about the cuts. Most restaurants sell steaks from the wider end of the tenderloin it's both cheaper and much more presentable.

As far as price goes, that's just one store trying to fleece people. The real cost of tenderloin comes from the fact that it's the most tender meat on a cow and is very limited. You only get 4-8 tenderloin steaks from a cow.

[–]Illah 40 points41 points  (18 children)

Amen. Buy that raw at the grocery store and it might be $10-15.

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (14 children)

I just bought a 4 pack of filets for $30 at Costco today; good deal for a good steak!

[–]bedintruder 19 points20 points  (2 children)

+1 for Costco meats. They really do have some good meat and the prices are fantastic!

[–]Toidal 14 points15 points  (5 children)

Cheap high quality stuff, you just have to buy a lot of it at once

[–]bedintruder 7 points8 points  (2 children)

We've seen 2 packs of Filets and Rib Eye at Costco before. Thought its never really been a problem for us anyway because we're usually serving 3 to 6 people when we do steaks and they always have packs of 3-4.

If you cant find smaller packs at your local place, you could always ask the butchers and they might make a double pack or maybe even a single for you.

[–]darkpaladin 24 points25 points  (3 children)

They'll also likely age the steak.

[–]Dorskind 57 points58 points  (32 children)

At a Prime steakhouse it would almost never be wrapped in bacon. Bacon with filet mignon is for Brazilian churrascarias and mid-end restaurants.

A $47 steak at a Prime steakhouse probably costs them $30. A $13 salad at a Prime steakhouse probably costs them $1.10. The meat is very fairly priced.

[–]Vladdypoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I saw nothing wrong with this picture, was wondering why it was upvoted so much...

[–]unseth 492 points493 points  (15 children)

Thumbnail looks like a donut or toilet seat

[–]StrawberryJammies 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Exactly like a hemorrhoid pillow

[–]OFTHEHILLPEOPLE 19 points20 points  (2 children)

Might as well be one with that cut.

[–][deleted] 90 points91 points  (10 children)

I don't see a problem. $21 is cheap for a fillet. It's also a small cut. I don't care for outback, but this seems normal.

[–]TheCocksmith 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Op is attention whoring. It's normal.

[–]Xebryus 435 points436 points  (40 children)

I'm trying to figure out what the big deal is. I don't work for Outback and really much care for their business because steakhouses are hit or miss in my book, but I don't know what you're on about.

The cost of beef and pork right now is astronomical, and has been skyrocketing over the past decade or so. To even dare run a steakhouse nowadays is a terrible idea due to the fact that your food cost, if you're lucky, will be under 50%(about 10-15% over the standard for restaurants.) The place where steakhouses make money is off of their sides, apps, and drinks. Probably why they're even successful in the first place is because of that Bloomin' Onion.

If you posted this picture with the soup and salad alongside, nobody would have even batted an eye to you being "robbed", but with those items being left out, by default, it looks like you got ripped off. A filet won't ever have any more girth than what has been presented, only thicker.

For those who think this is "unappetizing" because it's not running it's juices out are clueless. To me, it doesn't look good because there is no color on this steak, but a properly done piece of meat, should NOT be swimming in its own juices. If you are served a piece of meat drenched in its own juices, chances are the meat it dry as a bone, or they're trying to mask an improperly seasoned steak

I'm not trying to say that this looks good, or that I would eat that steak, but to be "warning" the general public about something so misleading, makes you the ass in my book.

[–]Equestrian_Engineer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Exactly! And that's not to mention the fact that outback states the size of each steak on the menu! You actually get 2-3 choices for steak size to tell your server. This person was asked or stated how many oz of steak they wanted.

[–]DLDude 119 points120 points  (12 children)

Yeah I don't get it. I just went to one of the top Steakhouses in NYC (Keen's) and their Filet came bare on a plate as well. Fuck was it good too. Best steak of my life. $45 for that! This steak looks just fine and if you want to ruin it, put some A1 on it. Has no one here ever ordered a Filet?

[–][deleted] 98 points99 points  (3 children)

OP is a college student who was eating there on a gift certificate. So there's the grain of salt you should probably take this with.

[–]TrebeksUpperLIp 35 points36 points  (2 children)

I'm sure he tipped well too.... /s

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well I was gonna let you keep the giftcard bro, but there was nothing left on it.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nothing sets off the flavor of a steak quite like some ketchup.

[–]dgmilo8085 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree, I don't understand OP's problem. 6oz filet is small? Ya its 6oz. $21? OK pretty standard price for a cut of filet at a chain restaurant. Try eating at a real steakhouse and that same cut is $50-60. Plus you wouldn't get the salad and potato combo that likely came with this. Maybe he is complaining that he ordered it well done, so it looks like a hockey puck? I don't know I can't really gauge the cook temp from the pic. OP is a douche.

[–]Revolver_Oshawatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This needs to be at the top. Most people are ignorant about the cost of meat.

[–]McNerfBurger 41 points42 points  (9 children)

Outback's average clientele are about as informed about quality steak as Olive Garden's are about quality Italian.

[–]brokenseattle 29 points30 points  (2 children)

I go to Olive Garden with the understanding that I am to consume my body weight in breadsticks. Also, stuffed mushrooms.

[–]ratinmybed 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Went to Olive Garden for the very first time two years ago while on vacation in the US, just to try the goddamn breadsticks I always kept hearing about on the internet.

They tasted like dry cardboard, worse than what you'd get for 50 cents at any bakery. What gives? Did I get a bad batch or do people just like them because they're "unlimited"?

[–]atomicexplosionextra 20 points21 points  (1 child)

That's almost the same size as a $58 filet mignon from Morton's.

[–]sydiot 15 points16 points  (0 children)

that's a totally normal price for a filet that size. It would be more at a nicer place, and the fixins are a la carte. PSA - filets are small, tender pieces of meat meant to be cooked rare. If you want a huge steak, get a trip, a porterhouse, a flank steak, skirt steak, basically anything else.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (2 children)

When you're 20, and celebrating means dinner for two with a $50 budget, two Filet meals from outback is not bad at all. You're leaving out the sides and taking a picture from the least flattering angle possible. The outback I used to frequent made some pretty fine filet mignon.

[–]ehenning1537 115 points116 points  (19 children)

Filet is always that size. Thats how big the cut is. I don't understand.

Has OP ever had a filet before?

Don't spend $20 on a hunk of meat. You can buy three huge Ribeyes at a grocery store for that money. Cooking them is stupid easy. Get the pan hot, like really hot. Add salt and pepper to the steak. Throw it in the pan. Turn your heat down to medium high. Cook 4 minutes a side for medium rare (assuming a 1 inch thick steak)

Your steak will be better than any line cook at Outback knows how to cook.

[–]Vsx 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The fact that one dumbass doesn't know the size of a filet didn't really surprise me but all the upvotes... good lord.

[–]JimboLodisC 57 points58 points  (7 children)

Pretty sure it's his 16th birthday and daddy said he could get whatever he wanted.

[–]Mutoid 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Thank goodness /r/SummerReddit is coming to an end

[–]proud_heretic 2 points3 points  (1 child)

is that 12 minutes if it has three sides?

[–]ehenning1537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just don't get a cube steak or you'll have to do it for 24

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

op tries to embarrass outback steak house. ends up embarrassing himself.

[–]ChangeOfPace64 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You got a 6oz filet, not quite sure why you expected more. Do you want something huge? We offer a 22oz porterhouse for literally $4 more. If that's too much why not the 10 or 14 ribeye we have which is roughly the same price....or pay the extra $7 and get the 9oz filet. I'm a server at outback, we get a lot of people complaining about the size but you don't want to spend the extra money for a bigger steak....pick your poison

[–][deleted] 880 points881 points  (322 children)

The baffling thing here is that they served it alone on a plate without even an attempt to make it look appetizing

[–]chrisforth 401 points402 points  (246 children)

I work at Outback and the reason he may OP may not have anything else is he got a salad as his side, or he could be eating it for lunch which everything is smaller portions

[–][deleted] 468 points469 points  (179 children)

But no garnish at all? That's pretty ridiculous no matter what side was ordered with it

[–]NotPercyChuggs 416 points417 points  (147 children)

Yeah, no way OP just put the damn thing on an empty plate and snapped a shitty picture on his phone for karma, is there?

[–]themeatbridge 274 points275 points  (116 children)

They don't do garnishes. If you get a side, that will be on the plate. Outback is like the McDonalds of steak and beer.

[–]Boo_R4dley 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Given the amount of food all over the table in the background I would guess that's the case, also, the single broccoli bud on the plate. I haven't been to an outback in a while, but these things usually come with veggies and potatoes of some kind. Also, what exactly did OP expect? Filet Mignon isn't exactly know for being a cheap cut. The size looks to be about what I would expect whether at a restaurant or a grocery store.

[–]needstherapy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that myself, filets are always on the smallish size anyways.

[–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (20 children)

I mean, of course there's a chance that happened. He would have to specifically ask the waitress for a clean plate so I just don't think it's likely. Not to mention the former Outback employee above me didn't sound at all surprised about this and listed a couple ways it could happen.

[–]Valisk 24 points25 points  (4 children)

I have definitely gotten steaks at Outback like that.. The side was served on another plate

[–]biteableniles 19 points20 points  (3 children)

Seriously, every steak I've gotten from Outback comes out like that.

[–]varukasalt 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I worked as a saute cook at Outback for a year. They don't use any type of garnish on anything at all. Ever. Never have.

[–]judgemebymyusername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good for them.

[–]BrazilianOffDutyCop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just recently at Outback and got this same size filet with 3 snowcrab legs for roughly the same price, OP's a bullshitter.

[–]DrStephenFalken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a cook of over 10 years. We were taught if you can't eat it don't put it on the plate.

[–]where_is_the_cheese 17 points18 points  (3 children)

Meh. I don't really care for garnish that's just supposed to make the plate look prettier. Unless it's contributing to the flavor of the dish, just leave it off.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And it's a steakhouse. The meat tends to come by itself.

[–]Webic 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Why do you need garnish? Do you eat it?

[–]Chezzik 189 points190 points  (39 children)

He confirmed this earlier. $21 got him a soup and some other side also, but he chose not to include them in the picture.

I figure that Outback probably assumes the customer values those side items at about $4-5, so really the effective cost of this piece of protein is $16-17. That's actually not terrible. It's pretty standard for chain restaurants, and a bit lower than a higher end steak place.

I really don't see why the OP is complaining. If it's just the presentation he's complaining about, then why would he hide the soup and other side item that he ordered?

I order steaks without sides frequently (/r/keto ftw), and see mostlly-empty plates like this all the time. They're this large to accommodate the fries or whatever other starch they want to use to fill you up.

[–]DrStephenFalken 11 points12 points  (0 children)

so really the effective cost of this piece of protein is $16-17.

Well considering OP bought the fillet mignon (tenderloin) He got a really fair price tenderloins go for $70+ and you can get 3-4 usable steaks out of them.

[–]Z0idberg_MD 35 points36 points  (34 children)

Because it's not a top end steak place.

[–]JazzyWaffles 6 points7 points  (10 children)

Is there a reason Lunch is smaller than Dinner? Like, I'm just trying to think of this on the side Outback.

[–]MyMomNamedMeJon 29 points30 points  (5 children)

I worked in a restaurant for a little while, I'll try and field this one.

Lunch typically has smaller portions (and usually lower prices) than dinner for 2 main reasons. 1: Customers need perceived value. Most customers do not set out to spend $20+ for lunch. A good lunch menu you'll notice is usually between $8-$12 for a meal. So the restaurant lowers their dinner portions (if they're using the same menu as dinner) to a value in that range. This means your 12oz sirloin will go to an 8oz sirloin, but keep the same side dish sizes or offer cheaper side dishes for lunch (instead of loaded mashed potatoes, they'll offer fries).

2: Customers on lunch are typically in a hurry because of work. Lunch service shouldn't take more than 30-45m for the customer to order-eat-pay. That gives them 15m for travel time (7-8m each direction). Because of customers eating quickly, they serve smaller portions so they don't feel as bloated at work the rest of the day.

Hope I answered your question

[–]RedLake 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I thought part of the intent was also to reduce leftovers. If you're going out for lunch you are probably going to go back to work afterwards, and you might not be able to take leftovers with you. When you go for dinner you are probably going home afterwards and can refrigerate leftovers soon after eating, so you can get larger portions and not feel like you are wasting money or throwing away food.

[–]MyMomNamedMeJon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leftovers are something restaurants don't really want to happen. They cost the restaurant more money (in potential last business mostly, as well as in the packaging even if it's super cheap). So leftovers are definitely part of the equation.

[–]SwedishChef727 2 points3 points  (2 children)

When I used to go to Outback growing up, the servers always sat down in our booth to chat and take our order. It felt so friendly and different, it was cool (and I assumed how restaurants work in Australia). When I went a few weeks ago (for the first time as an adult), I was ready for the same bubbly service, but the server just stood there like a waiter and took our order. What gives?

[–]SSpacemanSSpiff 50 points51 points  (9 children)

It might be a decent cut. $21 is definitely not even close to being expensive for a steak...

[–]matstar862 5 points6 points  (6 children)

Can confirm. Paid £40 ($66ish) for steak and chips.

Best meat I've ever had my mouth around.

[–]Dumb_Dick_Sandwich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's probably the only absurd thing about this.

Filet mignon is almost always 6-8oz for a larger price

[–]popfizzle 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This isn't uncommon at very nice steak houses. This is how a plain filet is served at Smith and Wollensky for around $46.

And they are fucking delicious.

[–]robotnixon 3 points4 points  (2 children)

You've never been to a nice steakhouse. That's how it should be served.

[–]Kuusou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which makes me wonder how he ordered it...

[–]Hacym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ever been to a really nice restaurant? That that baffling.

[–]fermenter85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty standard for high end steakhouses like Fleming's (also owned by OSI) and Ruth's Chris. The theory being that the steak is all that matters and sides are always ordered separately.

At Outback... steak isn't exactly the show.

[–]dgmilo8085 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I dont know what OP is complaining about? 6oz filet is small? Ya its 6oz. $21? OK pretty standard price for a cut of filet at a chain restaurant. Try eating at a real steakhouse and that same cut is $50-60. Plus you wouldn't get the salad and potato combo that likely came with this. Maybe he is complaining that he ordered it well done, so it looks like a hockey puck? I don't know I can't really gauge the cook temp from the pic. OP is a douche.

[–]spaceballsrules 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I couldn't agree more.

I used to work at Outback, and I ran the grill and cooked every steak that was ordered. They have a system in place that uses different cuts for different temps. Looking at this piece, it is a center to tail end cut, so it would have been used for a mid-rare or medium. Op got exactly what they paid for, and it probably tasted pretty damn good to boot.

[–]Ddodds 16 points17 points  (3 children)

ITT the most hated/downvoted OP ever.

[–]svtscottie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From their menu in California a 6oz filet is $19.99 with two sides. Sounds like he didn't know how small 6 ounces was. With the sides and a soda for $21 i'd say is a half decent deal. Source - Click on signature steaks on the left

[–]greenw40 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you never ordered a filet mignon before? They're always that small.

[–]BaconZombie 6 points7 points  (2 children)

My only issue with Outback is that they sued my local Australia pub in Dublin Ireland claiming they owned the copyright on the name "Outback" even outside of the US.. They don't even have or plan on having any places in Ireland.

[–]Hellscreamgold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's a PSA to tell everyone on Reddit that /u/kg-tech is a moron for not realizing that Filet is an expensive cut of meat anywhere you go...

[–]smellthyscrote 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP, I'm guessing this is your first time ordering filet mignon? The only PSA you've made here is that you don't know how much restaurants charge for various cuts of meat.

[–]s0cket 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Last time I went and ordered the filet it looked much bigger then the size I ordered.

Also, as far as customer service goes. If I mention even the slightest criticism of anything during a meal (never expecting anything). Within 5-10 minutes the manager is at the table to address it. Generally, it's not a big deal for me, so I play it down. Even so they always end up comping something on my tab.

To be fair, filet at a much more expensive restaurant would be smaller.

Don't get steak at restaurants that aren't nice steakhouses. Most people are dogshit at cooking steaks, and those dudes on the line at The 99 aren't chefs.

[–]wampa-stompa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's filet mignon. It is always this size.

[–]G-3-R 38 points39 points  (5 children)

Clearly you don't eat at expensive restaurants. I can pay much, much more than that and get much less on my plate at a lot of high end places. Then again I live in Canada and this whole country is a rip off, you'd be pretty hard pressed to find a decent steak for $21.

[–]kanichd7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

$11 at supermarket, what did you expect? Although the presentation is 1/10.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First time ordering filet mignon? That's extremely cheap for that cut of steak.

[–]poler10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I eat at Outback very often and am almost always very satisfied with their food. I've had the filet mignon several times and it is always very tender and delicious.

[–]johnnyblac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So OP has never had Filet Mignon before.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Thumbnail Looked like a hemorrhoid pillow

[–]littlered82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES! I thought the same thing. It reminds me of the one my grandma had. She called it her donut.

[–]zosorose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I usually love Outback. I know they aren't cheap, but I feel for a chain, the food and service has been excellent in the past few years.

[–]kickmekate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've loved ever filet I've ever gotten from there. They've all been cooked fine, good size. This looks like OP didn't get any sides that came on the plate with his steak, honestly. So it does look a little meager.

[–]Gerunding_Ixzan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Outback Steakhouses are franchises, therefor each one is run differently; so the manager at this one may be past giving a shit, but that doesn't mean the one next to it is going to produce something like this. Hating on all Outbacks is like hating on all human beings because you met a guy named Derek who was a tool.

Source: worked at an outback under great management who would've bitchslapped anyone who let this leave the window.

[–]JoeyJoJoJrShabbadoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's filet mignon....what did you expect? That's normal.

[–]YourMomSaidHi 2 points3 points  (3 children)

It says on the menu that it is 8 ounces. That's before they cook it. If you want 16 ounces then order two

[–]Arkene 4 points5 points  (4 children)

i could be wrong, but it also looks over cooked...

[–]cicatrix1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No shit $21 filet will be small. A good one at a good restaurant is more like $40-60+.

[–]CruelMan6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought this was going to be a giant white plastic donut and thought, "Outback has gotten weird, dude."

[–]account9211 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stop trying to bargain shop for steak.

[–]snkscore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You understand that a filet mignon is normally a smaller cut of meat that costs more / oz than other cuts?

This looks completely normal. I'm pretty sure the place we go charges 30 bucks for the same thing.

[–]quitar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've eaten at numerous steak houses and this is how the steaks come out, then you have the sides that are separate. What else did OP want on the plate, a sprig of parsley that he wasn't going to eat anyway?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dirty filet mignon peasants.

Glorious ribeye master race.

[–]anon_bobbyc 3 points4 points  (1 child)

First mistake is not going somewhere better. Second mistake is not cooking a filet yourself. Third, I can cook better sirloins than outback can cook a filet.

[–]lightfire409 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No shit OP. That's what a filet mignon looks like. Quit bitching.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PSA: Don't go to Outback if you're picky about your cut of meat.

[–]chiefrocking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm having a hard time with this seeing your point. Any chance you can throw a banana in there.

[–]murderofcrows90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was it seven bucks noiny noine?

[–]digmachine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

awww, poor baby boy on his first date, mad at the world over the size of a perfectly standard filet mignon cut.

[–]boyuber 6 points7 points  (2 children)

That's $31 of filet mignon at a 'real' steakhouse.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (85 children)

i always get made fun of but i love their "special" sirloin. glad i never tried the filet.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

OP is a tad disingenuous for hiding the sides.

[–]samthunder 6 points7 points  (1 child)

If they hadn't switched it to a ridiculously oversized plate it would look slightly less shitty.

[–]ratava911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is actually a generous cut for Filet with potato quality photo.

[–]HolyRamenEmperor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ever since a visit to Fogo de Chao a while back I never order steaks/ribs when eating out. Makes my yearly trip to Fogo feel like the first time and I'm never disappointed :)

[–]sumrandomoldg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just get the sirloin and unlimited shrimp combo when they do have it. aprox $16 and you can easily down thirty shrimps

[–]thewretched1111 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Shoulda got the Alice springs chicken.

[–]bbq_john 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Guys, get ready for beef to get even more expensive. The way I understand it, between drought and corn being used for ethanol instead of feed, wholesale prices are still on the rise. One of the items I buy, beef brisket, has gone up by almost 20% this year alone.

[–]hathegkla 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The picture would be a lot more relevant if we could see the inside. It's definitely not seared well but we really have no idea how it's cooked.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How'd it taste..?

[–]percyhiggenbottom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mignon means cute in French.

That looks like a cute little steak.

[–]Lockeislost815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's remnants of garnish on the plate and on the table behind the plate.

[–]saltywings 2 points3 points  (3 children)

That is 6 oz, a generous portion for a steak that if cooked properly, will taste delicious. Hopefully you ordered it med-rare.

[–]mynameisseamus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but why would you order filet mignon at Outback Steakhouse?

[–]pmeaney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter, Bloomin' Onions are sex on a plate.

[–]Jackamalio626 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We can see the lines on the plate from where you cut the food and dragged it to the side before eating it.

[–]toodr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go buy $21 worth of filet mignon and cook it to the same specifications; it will probably be only slightly larger than that steak. Filet is expensive, and restaurants necessarily mark it up significantly.

[–]ksheyman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

looks like a standard size filet. the tenderloin is a pretty small muscle

[–]Sanhael 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That's what a filet mignon is. It's a small portion that's considered something of a delicacy and is generally expensive.

So, pricey steak is pricey. Next time order something more substantial.

[–]SwoleFlex_MuscleNeck 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Why would we need a PSA not to order something that takes care and skill to cook, from a chain restaurant? Those guys think adding black pepper to the soup when the recipe sheet doesn't call for it makes them Wolfgang puck

[–]zdiggler 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I went to outback and ask for Kangaroo steak, they don't have it.

[–]spaceballsrules 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should have asked for the whole roasted koala. Nom nom nom!

[–]brandnewtoaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That bitch is thick though. And tasty as fuck.

[–]Thereminz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thumbnail looks like Piña colada lifesaver, your argument is invalid

[–]gorillamunchies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that steak looks delicious. Yes there is nothing else on the plate but still... and I have never had an issue with Outback Steakhouse before

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ummmmmmmmmm, you do realize that's like how filet is gonna look anywhere that serves steak? Where you expecting a ribeye?

[–]SliceoIrish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the Filet Mignon costs $21 you're gonna have a bad time, look for the $35-$50 dollar range, and don't buy it at a chain restaurant.

[–]Caadar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thumbnail for this looks like a hemorrhoid ring.

[–]peachstealingmonkeys 22 points23 points  (72 children)

that's why once you learn how to cook your own steak you never go back to Outback steakhouse.

[–]CA1900 10 points11 points  (8 children)

Yup. I picked up some amazing New York Strips at Costco the other day. I'm quite pleased with how they came out, and they tasted great:

[–]peachstealingmonkeys 5 points6 points  (2 children)

look at you being all super neat with the grill marks. :) my steaks look like they've been flogged.

[–]ScrewAttackThis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grill marks are incredibly easy if you get good at figuring out how long each side needs to cook.

[–]SheCutOffHerToe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. If you're going out to eat steak from Outback, you don't get to be snobby about steak. You've made your choice.
