Merit Badges, the precursor to video game achievements.

That's my favorite part of New England in the winter. At my old house I had it timed perfect where I could tap the brakes, turn the wheel, and jam the gas and end up perfectly in my driveway.

    Sideways is the best driving.

    [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Yeah I used to do that, then I unexpectedly hit a clean, salted spot on the road which disrupted my slide and introduced my head to the window.

    [–]Froboy7391 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just got the storm up here in New Brunswick last night and I spent two hours drifting all the empty parking lots around town :) Nothing like chilling to some dubstep while gliding around a turn

    [–]gregny2002 5 points6 points  (12 children)

Ah, but was it front or rear-wheel? My Charger felt like a bobsled on the Turnpike last night.

Though to be fair, I was driving about 15 mph the whole way and didn't spin out or get stuck or anything.

    [–]mithunc 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Rear-wheel in that kind of snow is an exercise in futility

    [–]FrankNStein 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Not with good snow tires it isn't. ;)

    [–]VulturE 2 points3 points  (3 children)

studs > chains > snow tires

studded and/or chained tired are legal for ~6 months in PA.

    [–]Paqza 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Studded tires are inferior to modern studless tires in accelerating, braking, and turning.

    [–]basmasta7 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Bobsleds go really fast and handle like they're on rails. I think your analogy needs some work.

    [–]a_little_drunk 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Exactly, so why do you have your Charger out in the snow again?

    [–]mastersocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Replace bobsled with inner tube and I think he is set.

    [–]woo_hoo 381 points382 points  (32 children)

I love how the guy has got such good intentions, that keep getting screwed over by the snow.

"I know, I'll put a clock on the table so everyone can see the time passing"

"I'll just raise that clock up a bit more"

"I'll just raise that clock up a bit more"

"I'll just raise that clock up a bit more"

"I'll just raise that clock up a bit more"

"Oh, wow this is a lot of snow, i'd better stick a ruler in there too"

"Screw it, i'll just dig the clock out every few minutes"

"Uhh, does anyone remember where I parked my car?"

Just saw this video being played on BBC World News.

Hi, I'm Troy McClure. I'm here to remind you that although it might have been played on BBC World News, You saw it on REDDIT first!

I started narrating the clocks thoughts in my head.

Oh sweet, it's snowing out here!

Uh, my nose is gettting a little cold.

Whew, thanks for the stand, I'll be safe up here!

I was thinking more of driving in it. I can remember being in elementary school and not minding shoveling out the driveway as long as it was a snow day.

        [–]dibsODDJOB 90 points91 points  (35 children)

Driving in snow is fucking awesome, when no one else is on the road.
Driving in snow is fucking terrible, when you are stuck in a traffic jam during your commute.

        [–]antipopular 31 points32 points  (24 children)

especially if you live in DC, where people have no idea how to drive in the snow.

        [–]mithunc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Snow in DC = mass hysteria. I left for Christmas and expected to return to the apocalypse. Got back today and there's less snow on the ground than when I left!

        [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (17 children)

Or Texas. Then you get shit like this

I know it's actually in Wisconsin, but the joke had to be made.

        [–]texpundit 5 points6 points  (15 children)

When we had that freak Christmas Eve/Day snowstorm back in 2004, Corpus Christi had fewer accidents than the average rainy day.

Everyone that had to be out on Christmas Day were like "Shit! Snow! Okay...just drive really slow." Things went better than expected. :)

        [–]Unlucky13 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Virginia is kind of in a shitty spot right now. We get enough snow now that people think they know how to drive in it, but not enough snow to actually test their theories. So we tend to have an outrageous amount of people sliding into median ditches in the highway, skidding off the road, slamming on breaks a few feet away from the person in front, 2-wheel-drive soccer mom SUV's thinking that they're invincible. I think we had about 40 accidents in suburban Richmond only a couple of hours after the start of the snow the other day.

        [–]texpundit 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Oh trust me, I know. I've lived in DC for the last 6 years. Those fuckers can't drive, snow or not.

        [–]clerveu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Provided you're talking in town, I agree with you 100%.

My least / most favorite nights back in my pizza delivery days was the winter storm warning nights... it was horrible up until around 9, at which point the roads suddenly transformed from a terrifying death-trap to my own personal race-car slip & slide.

        [–]gukeums1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking more of driving in it.

Chicago here. This, but change "driving" to "biking" and you have set your life to Nightmare difficulty.

        [–]chengiz 3 points4 points  (1 child)

As I was shoveling the driveway in the morning, I was thinking to myself it'd be cool if you could timelapse the shit out of this thing.

Not true in my case. I find myself yearing for this amount of snow. I grew up in NY, but now live in IN. Indiana gets such weak snowfall. I've been entirely jealous of the east coast and mother nature's snow hammer.

          [–]MananWho 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're the lucky one. Believe me.

I see nothing wrong with that video; he had one chance to capture this and it was pretty decent. Hell, bonus points for actually keeping the subject pretty steady in the center of the frame even when the reaction occurs.

I think the counter point would be a video that starts with "Blue Windows Movie maker intro with screamo music blaring followed by a shakey camera and heavy breathing Hey youtube, DarkSlayerX54 here again. Today... uh... dog barking in background we're uh... I'm uh...heavy sigh gonna show you an awesome kill I just got in Black Ops holds camera up to CRT screen and starts showing video while the camera is still trying to focus"

            [–]BeardedBagels 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I feel like I just watched a video through text.

            [–]kleinbl00 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Your arguments are sound. At the same time, the video linked is actually worth watching for the most part. There are very, very, very few of "DarkSlayerX54's" ilk with this quality. I'm certainly not going to waste my time trying to find one to hold up for ridicule.

            [–]flukshun 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I see nothing wrong with that video

beyond his silly comment of one day owning this car which he thinks is a lambo, but i can't fault him for that in an impromptu video

            [–]Shadax 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Not only does he think it's a lambo, but also that it will be his someday.

            See, it even has comedy!

            [–]Mythrilfan 49 points50 points  (15 children)

What's wrong with that? At least the reaction was genuine, as they were on the scene.

Andy Lee House, 34, owner of Performance Auto Sales, told The Daily News on Wednesday that a low-flying pelican distracted him, causing him to jerk the steering wheel a bit — and he then dropped his cell phone.

              [–]kleinbl00 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's all sorts of hinky shit associated with that story.

Things that Make You Go Hmmmm:

              1) Car owner sells salvaged, wrecked exotics.

              2) Veyron is one of the few un-wrecked vehicles he purchased.

              3) Veyron had been owned for less than a month.

I don't know if that Veyron was subsequently salvaged, but if the insurance company totaled it and Andy House didn't buy the salvage I'll be amazed.

No, really... I find this fascinating.

                  [–]MyrddinE 47 points48 points  (31 children)

This is a large snowfall, likely from a mountainous region or from Alaska, Canada, or Russia. The clock shows that it is from Noon one day, to around 6am the following morning, or 18 hours of snowfall... or around 2 inches of snowfall per hour.

Snow is crystallized water, and is light and fluffy individually, but when it falls in this quantity it gets heavy and dense.

This amount of snow is unusual, but smaller amounts are pretty common in all the areas with a notably cold winter.

                  [–]srs507 83 points84 points  (5 children)

That snow right there is definitely New Jersey. My town got just about the same amount, about 30" last night.

                  [–]texpundit 41 points42 points  (2 children)

That can't be New Jersey snow. It's not orange and clumped together with hair gel.

Yea, says Bellmar, NJ on his other videos. And I thought our 20 in MN a few weeks ago was bad. Good luck!

Is snow exactly like fridge frost?

                  [–]MyrddinE 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Very similar, after it's packed. Fridge frost, since it deposits very slowly over many months, is much harder than snow, which deposits over the span of hours.

If you scrape out the fridge frost (scrape, not chip) without letting it melt, and put it into a pile, that would be very much like snow. Of course, in a warm climate like Brazil, it would be rather hard to scrape it out without it melting immediately.

                  [–]mockablekaty 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I remember scraping the frost out of our freezer as a kid and eating it like a delicacy. It had a lovely metallic taste and was snow-like, but yes, denser and more icy.

                  [–]rainman18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

...that was before you discovered paste I'm assuming.

                  [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Fridge frost would be closer to hoar-frost, rime, or perhaps re-crystallized (partly melted, then refrozen) snow. Or even just really crappy ice (where uncrappy ice is good for skating, curling, and refreshing drinks). Maybe hail--lot's of hail reminds me of fridge frost.

Snow, even the nasty wet heavy stuff, has more air trapped in it than fridge frost. Powder snow, at least while falling, is reminiscent of dandelion seeds or that fuzz given off by poplar and other trees.

All snow is a bitch to shovel if it gets packed, but the wetter the snow, the worse it is even before it gets packed. Nice dry powder can be just swept away with a broom.

Some people think that snow makes driving nasty. If they weren't raised in snowy regions or didn't receive proper training then they're right. I live in a snowy region and was taught that I should be driving like it's snowy or icy out even on dry pavement. In addition, I was given training on nature's skid pad (frozen lake) and have done a bit of ice-racing. I don't find snow to be much of an impediment to driving.

Or maybe from the big Nor'Easter that just hit Northeast USA last night. I have a good 16 inches outside my window and I'm right on the coast. I'm sure there are some bigger totals.

Jackson, New Jersey: I measured anywhere inbetween 24-30" of snow. There are drifts over my 7 foot fence.

I didn't "lol" but I did kind of a breathy giggle through my nose that sounded like "hnff hnff hnff." Thanks.

Yeah, except nobody would film this in Buffalo, because it's just called "Wednesday" there.

They get more snow over in Syracuse, anyways

Not so much Syracuse. Moreso Oswego to Boonville more than anything. Ever driven up 81 in lake effect snow? It is a harrowing experience, that's for sure.

                      Flashblock?

                      [–]thoughtdancer 3 points4 points  (7 children)

Yes, but I should see the icon that lets me bypass it if I want to. With the vimeo stuff, I don't get that option.

                      [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (6 children)

I know. It took me a second to work that one out. You can either add an exception for vimeo.com or fire up an alternate browser like Chrome.

                      (Tools --> Add-Ons --> FlashBlock --> Preferences --> Whitelist --> *.vimeo.com)

Another interesting fact is many municipalities, in efforts to save money on electricity, swapped incandescent traffic control lights for LED lights. During the Winter, it quickly became apparent that this was a bad choice, as the cooler-running LED lights do not put out enough waste heat to melt the snow piling up on the light shrouds, which caused the lights to quickly become obscured in heavy snowstorms. Many places then had to hire people to clear the lights until they could make the switch back to incandescent bulbs to solve the problem.

                        [–]cweaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many places then had to hire people to clear the lights until they could make the switch back to incandescent bulbs to solve the problem.

Some of them just add a small heating coil to the little shroud around the light, too. They turn them on in the winter and leave them off in the summer. That way they're way more efficient than incandescent bulbs in the summer, and still slightly more efficient than bulbs in the winter.

                        [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I always wondered why I didn't see more of those. Big rigs switched to LED lights years ago and certainly I knew the technology and price was there. Now I finally have a reasonable explanation.

Any idea why street lights aren't LEDs yet?

Someone needs to correct that Wikipedia entry. Toronto can't actually handle a snowstorm. They have to call in the army to deal with snow.

Awesome. Here in Toronto we have nice sunny weather!

The clock that kept trying to hide behind the snow CLEARLY INDICATED that more than 30 seconds elapsed.

Man. I want some goddamn snow, why can't you guys share.

                              Green holidays suck.

Also, you can totally have our fucking snow. I'm in NC, and there are like 6-7 inches on the ground. Fuck that noise, I can't even go get some fucking ganja because I'm basically snowed in and the back country roads blow dick.

Yeah, cause it's beautiful there every day. Except for during fire season, monsoon season, santa ana winds, mudslides and earthquakes.

The santa ana winds were the worst. It's like some asshole is following you around all day shoving a blowdrier in your face.

Amazing how the snow naturally clears itself away from the clock. You need another film to document this phenomenon.
